Managing Stress during the holidays

It's no surprise we can feel stressed during the holidays, especially since they come post-election. Dr. Tim Riley from Penn State Health says this is often a hard time for many people. “First off, there's a lot more that we have to do on top of our already full plates. And then there's also often a lot of expectations about the way things should be. And a lot of family dynamics that get surfaced that have often kind of been in the background and not a big deal during the rest of the year.” However, Dr. Riley says even though the holidays can be challenging, there's things we can do to try to limit the stress. “If we do wind up in a conversation that begins to feel uncomfortable, I think the first step is to identify our own reactions and own them as ours. No one else can make us feel anything. So, the reaction that I'm having about a particular conversation is about me so I can own my feelings as my own.” For those struggling with grief, Dr. Riley suggests allowing the grieving process to take space. “I would also say if we're approaching a holiday and we recently lost a loved one, it's just really important for us to give ourselves a little bit of extra tender loving care, give ourselves some extra support. Find things that we know will be supportive for us that will allow us to navigate the challenges of the holiday season with a little bit less turbulence.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's podcast features coaches Dan Back and Tim Riley. Dan Back is the founder of Jump Science and is a coach at Xceleration sports performance in Austin, Texas where he trains both track and team sport athletes. Dan has been a guest on episodes 263 and 337 of the podcast, speaking on sprint and jump topics. Tim Riley is the Director of Sports Performance at Kollective in Austin, TX where he supervises all pro, collegiate, and youth athletic development.  Tim currently oversees and conducts strength and conditioning sessions for NFL, PLL & AVP athletes. In the quest for improved athletic qualities, we often look at things in isolation.  We look at the most powerful training means, right now, to help us to achieve better performance.  For the best results, however, we need to broaden our view of training, and understand the qualities at the bottom (early athletic development) and the top (maximal strength and force training) to maximize potential.  We need to understand all of the iterations of skill and strength that come before the sprint, jump, throw, agile moves, etc.  you see on the field, and how everything works together in the grand scheme of training. On today's podcast, Dan and Tim speak on their own early athletic experiences, the critical “base level” abilities explosive athletes need for a better vertical jump (as well as general explosive movement), where and how maximal strength work fits into the long-term development equation, warmup and game-based concepts, assessments, and more. Seventy-seven years ago, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, and delivered his famous “Iron Curtain” speech. In the 1960's, college leaders sought to commemorate Churchill's visit so they devised a plan to rebuild a church in Fulton that had been destroyed twice in London: once by a fire in the 1600s and then again during World War II. Dedicated in Fulton in 1969, St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury is now undergoing a $6 million renovation. Tim Riley, director and chief curator at America's National Churchill Museum, talks about Churchill's connection to Missouri, the restoration of the church and about the parallels to Russia's illegal war against Ukraine.

R&SRNR_176 – “THE TRADE SECRETS OF LENNON & MCCARTNEY” Although they only collaborated for about twelve years beginning in late 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney rank as one of the most successful songwriting duos of all time. Our best guestimate is that approximately one billion copies of their compositions have been sold as of the posting date of this podcast. This includes around 600 million or more of those waxed by the Beatles with the remainder recorded by countless other performers. That extraordinary success wasn't the result of an ordinary composing partnership. Behind the scenes, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were often on different emotional plateaus when they penned these tunes. And as you will hear, their opposite moods frequently played out musically. Our resident Rockologist, Ken Deutsch, and Radio Dave will reveal some of the Lennon & McCartney trade secrets – with a lot of help from noted Beatles historian and National Public Radio music commentator, Tim Riley – who's our guest expert for this episode. Author and NPR critic Tim Riley is our guest to talk about his prolific career as a music critic, author of several books on rock history, his brand-new website and latest venture The Riley Rock Report: an audio newsletter which was launched in March. It builds on his book-length multimedia anthology of reviews due out in 2023 titled "Millennium Pop: Music Love & Squalor". Over 100 essays by Riley covering the past 40 years. Starting with the website we veer off into various discussions including older rock artists playing youthful music for older audiences. Who gets it right? Who doesn't? Is there an expiration date for rock and roll musicians? The state of rock and roll radio today, the recent rock bio movie craze, streaming services, the Beatles and what we get wrong about the John Lennon and Paul McCartney partnership. Also, Tim has some strong opinions on Bob Dylan's recent music. All of that before we wrap things up with Tim's brand-new digital project due out in 2023 that will take writing and reading about rock music to a new level. Tim Riley reviews pop and classical music for WBUR's widely syndicated “Here and Now and On Point”, and has written for the New York Times, truthdig, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, Slate, Salon, and many other publications. He was trained as a classical pianist at Oberlin College and Eastman School of Music. Since 2009, he has taught digital journalism at Emerson College in Boston. Brown University hosted Riley as its music critic-in-residence in 2008. His first book, “Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary” (Knopf/Vintage 1988), a critique of the Beatles' music, won praise from Jon Pareles of The New York Times for bringing “New insight to the act we've known for all these years.” The book established Riley as an author of rock history critiques. His television appearances include Morning Joe, PBS NewsHour, CBS Morning and Evening News, MTV, and the History Channel. Episode 3 features Tim Riley, one of the most famous writers in our industry.IMAGE OF TIM: http://bit.ly/TimRileyMadMag We say ‘writer’ rather than Creative Director or Head of Copy (both roles he excels at too), because deep down Tim is a man of words. Pithy, witty, cheeky, emotional, funny words. In his career he has written for John Smiths, The Economist, The Guardian, Boddingtons, Sony, Nike, Snickers, Sainsbury’s, winning awards on virtually every account he’s put his pen to. Economist Array: http://bit.ly/36cH6vM This incredible body of work has propelled him to the lofty title of Creative Partner at AMVBBDO …..and yet you’d never know from listening to our chat he is a man with such a revered position. Tim is a humble, funny and disarmingly charming guest who was incredibly open and frank in telling us about his career to date.Jordan Economist: http://bit.ly/2v6mn02 We soon got into The Economist work and how over the past 22 years, Tim has worked as a writer and CD on the account. He told us the story behind the ‘Someone mentions Jordan’ billboard and the circuitous route to the final poster. We’ll let Tim explain more, but as ever, it’s an unpredictable path to getting work out, and this is another great example that lead to one of the most famous Economist posters ever. BONUS IMAGE - MR BLOBBY! http://bit.ly/2NHHiNm However, the main chat was about Tim’s John Smiths billboards when he was at DDB (now known as Adam&EveDDB). JohnSmiths:http://bit.ly/3auCGUrhttp://bit.ly/36gC3Lahttp://bit.ly/2G7bzRGhttp://bit.ly/2tqnwzb This didn’t disappoint either for back story, involving a bottom drawer idea from a MAD magazine that Tim had had for years and magically pulled out to inspire the brilliant irreverent posters.MadMagazine: http://bit.ly/2G7mIShhttp://bit.ly/379oxKk We admire Tim for his honesty and it should give us all hope that the bottom drawer can still yield greatness.Nike Jordan:http://bit.ly/2sFPlmu Thanks again Tim for your spoken words, along with the written ones, that will hopefully inspire our listeners.

STUFF FROM THE LOFT - Dave Dye

Words. Boy, they’ve really fallen off their perch. They used to be so respected, as were the people who knew how to use them. They could breathe life into cold, dead facts, in their hands ‘our beer costs a lot’ could become ‘Reassuringly expensive’. Better and shorter. Writers would often burn the midnight oil in an effort to get the maximum meaning from the minimum word count. It’s odd, because people have never read more than they do today, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Google, emails, texts, not to forget books, magazines and the odd newspaper. In fact today, there’s no part of the communication process that doesn’t rely on words, including the deck that explains the communication process. But for some reason, the skill of using them effectively is no longer being taught or even valued. Tim Riley has been choosing his words carefully for three decades now, we had a great chat about his time using them at some the best agencies in London. Hope you enjoy it.

Michael Honey & Tim Riley - Web or native? Smart choices for smartphone apps

Web Directions Podcast

Computers are increasingly being held in the hand rather than sitting atop lap or desk. We now have to consider how our products will work underneath a finger instead of a mouse cursor. Increasingly, too, those products are being delivered as native applications, capable of fully exploiting device capabilities. That has ramifications not only for the way those projects get built, but also how we structure the businesses that support them. In this session, Michael Honey and Tim Riley answer the question 'web or native?' from business, product design and development perspectives. They cover the current state of web technology on modern devices and compare it to what’s available through native development platforms. They’ll look at web, native and hybrid strategies successfully employed by Australian and international businesses, and share their own stories as mobile and web developers. Finally, they’ll offer practical guidance on picking a strategy for web or native development that best suits your needs - as either a developer or a client. Tim and Michael are two of the partners behind Icelab, an Australian design and development studio. They’ve trod both the web and native paths through their client work, such as interactive touchscreens for museum exhibits, online photo galleries and mobile tour guides, and also their own projects, like Decaf Sucks, a coffee review community available on the web (optimised for both desktops and smartphones) and as a native iPhone app. Michael founded Icelab after a career as creative director and later, interactive director in an agency environment. He has fifteen years’ experience in design for screen, print, video and exhibition spaces, and has expertise in writing, programming, direction and post-production. He is an experienced coder, with a particular interest in algorithmic animation and datavisualisation. He is also experienced in the development of diagrammatic animations for cultural, engineering, scientific and architectural clients. Michael’s interests include architecture, urbanism, and the environment. Follow Michael on Twitter: @michaelhoney Tim is a partner at Australian design and development studio Icelab, where he builds excellent web and mobile applications using Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Cocoa, and occasionally out of popsicle sticks. On alternate days he runs Decaf Sucks, an online community for coffee reviews, and RentMonkey, which contains the greatest on the Internet. Tim is an active participant in the Australian web and iOS communities, as a regular speaker at the Sydney Ruby on Rails meetings, organiser of the Canberra Ruby Crew, and part of the Canberra Cocoaheads chapter.
