In the summer of 2000, ska was on the decline in the US, but up in Victoria, Canada, it was as popular as ever. Local promoter Dane Roberts--who'd been throwing ska shows for a few years--decided to throw a full-on ska festival. It was in part a tribute to Mathew Bishop, the man that introduced him to ska (he'd died from a mountain climbing accident two years earlier), and it was Dane's final college assignment. If the festival made money, he passed. If it didn't, he failed. The first year of the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival was a big success. Dane booked Chris Murray, The Scofflaws, King Django, and a reunion show for local favorites, Pressure Cooker. But the following year, ska died in Victoria, and attendance dropped. But Dane kept the festival going anyway, even paying out of pocket to do so. He kept the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival going no matter how popular (or unpopular) ska was. And he even expanded the festival to include acts rooted in ska and reggae. It's the longest-running ska festival in North America. Guests over the years have included Fishbone, Less Than Jake, The Wailers, Ozomatli, The Real McKenzies, The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Mos Def, Neville Staple, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Itals, Ky-Mani Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Dr. Ring Ding, and Larry and His Flask. The festival celebrates its 23rd year on June 22-26, 2022. We sit down with Dane to learn more about the festival's history, why he's so in love with ska, and get a glimpse of Victoria's local ska scene with groups like The Bombasts, Pressure Cooker, One Drop and Grossbuster. Tickets can be purchased at https://victoriaskafest.ca Support the show

My guest this week is Rachel Gefferie who works at the University of Kent as Diversity Mark Officer and is also doing an Anthropology PhD. Rachel, who is originally from Suriname and later moved to the Netherlands, talks about why calendar and anniversary dates and photographs are so important. She can relive the original feelings she had when she looks back at pictures. Rachel tells us why she selects happy moments and why the camera is like an extended eye. We also discuss how other people may interact (differently) with them, even those in the same picture, and Rachel talks about the role that pictures play in her cultural background. They represent the most important thing in one's life and all of one's accomplishments. She talks about the time she was asked what the object was from childhood that means the most to her, and it was when she won her first book for writing a story. And we find out about Rachel's attachment to objects, e.g. jewellery. She has a necklace that reminds her of her time in Colombia where she was diagnosed with a heart defect and she was told that she didn't have long to live. She was told to do something that she wanted to do as she didn't have much time left. She ended up in Saint Martin where she had a second opinion and discovered that she wasn't terminally ill. The necklace symbolizes her having new life and having a second chance and needing to make it work. She now faces sickness in a completely new way, and Rachel talks about how she has become more cautious if she is separated from her husband. Music played a big role in her upbringing, and we learn that lockdown had a huge impact on the connections which live music brings. We find out whether there were any inspiring artists. Rachel discusses dance hall and music of Jamaican origin, and she discusses a photo that she brought with her to the recording of herself with the son of Bob Marley, Ky-Mani Marley. Rachel talks about her educational journey. She worked as a social worker in Saint Martin and taught in Suriname. She then went on to do a Masters in Social Anthropology and now her PhD. Surprisingly, Rachel explains how she ended up in Canterbury due to Google. At the end of the interview, Rachel talks about how she believes that, in the context of her Christian faith, everything happens for a reason. The health diagnosis was an attack on her faith but afterwards her faith returned. And, Rachel explains why she lives through the past, in the present, looking at the future. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Rachel Gefferie and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Alberto D'Ascola (Italian born July 4, 1977), better known by his stage name Alborosie, is an Italian reggae artist. Born and raised in Marsala, Sicily, Italy, but now residing in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a multi-instrumentalist, being proficient in guitar, bass, drums and keyboard. His musical career began in the Italian reggae band Reggae National Tickets, from Bergamo city, when he was 15 years old in 1993, in which he was known as Stena. In 2001 Alborosie decided to try a solo career. He moved to Jamaica to be close to reggae music's roots and Rastafari culture. There, he started working as sound engineer and producer. He has also worked with artists like Gentleman and Ky-Mani Marley. His first solo album was called Soul Pirate. In the summer of 2009 he released his second album which was called "Escape from Babylon. In August 2008 Alborosie played at the Uppsala Reggae Festival. Alborosie recently started his own record label, Forward Recordings. He has given concerts all round the world, including most of Europe and Jamaica. I-cient-cy; growing up in Trench Town the catalyst for Reggae music, has inherited that unique sound founded by his predecessors. His debut Album “When Words come to Life” has a roots rock sound, mix with a combination of strong vocals over melodic drum and bass. It is, the true, ghetto experience, all blended in harmony. The first two single off the Album “WORKS TO DO, and STRUGGLE'' pack a solid one two punch, that will, have the world wanting more.
