You haven't heard from anyone like Professor Sir Peter Donnelly before. He is a statistician, professor, a knight of the realm and an entrepreneur. Not only has he given a Ted Talk about statistics that has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, but he is now working on genetics tests that could save lives and change the world by helping people understand how predisposed they are to becoming obese or getting certain illnesses. Donnelly left his career in academia to become the co-founder and chief executive of Genomics, which is developing these genetic tests and is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the UK. But this may only be the start of its story... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Rocket Lab founder Sir Peter Beck is trying not to compare himself too much to his mega-wealthy rivals. Jeff Bezos' Blue Origins has successfully launched its first rocket into orbit overnight, while Elon Musk's SpaceX has been launching a pair of landers towards the moon. Rocket Lab, meanwhile, has been launching a second Varda Pioneer Spacecraft into orbit. Beck told Tim Beveridge he's never had the capital of his two main competitors, owned by the two wealthiest people on the planet, and he probably never will. He says the lack of money has forced Rocket Lab to innovate, which has become its strength. In other space developments, India has docked two spacecraft for the first time, while stranded NASA astronaut Suni Williams has made her first spacewalk on the ISS. She and her colleague Butch Wilmore aren't expected back on Earth until late March at the earliest. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The world of quantum technology is not some science fiction flight of fantasy, it is an exciting field of science which is turning into a rapidly growing engineering sector. You might not know it but you can already buy quantum-dot TVs and mobile phones with quantum-enhanced encryption. Quantum technologies are poised to expand the realm of engineering in ways that were unthinkable until just a decade ago. Dr Elizabeth Eso aligning an optical system to experimentally demonstrate a time-bin quantum key distribution system. Credit: Chris Watt Photography Quantum engineering is the development of technology that exploits the laws of quantum mechanics (the behaviour of nature at and below the scale of atoms), using it as a toolbox for the development of quantum technologies, such as quantum sensors or quantum computers. There are many devices available which rely on quantum mechanical effects such as medicine, optical communication, high-speed internet, and high-performance computing, just to mention a few examples. An IBM engineer adjusting on one of the company's quantum computers. Credit: Connie Zhou for IBM After the technological advances that brought us lasers, MRI imagers and transistors, a second wave of quantum technologies is expected to impact society in a similar way. These new technologies will make use of quantum coherence (the regular and predictable behaviour of atoms), building on the progress achieved in the last century, to enable us to have greater control of these atomic-scale systems. The burgeoning quantum industry requires a quantum-literate workforce; something that is in short supply at the moment. Those working in the field mainly come from either a physics or engineering background and have acquired their ”quantum engineering skills” by experience. Many of the companies that could benefit from quantum technologies already have a strong presence here in the UK, including those involved in new materials, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, aerospace, defence and financial services, but what other application will we as engineers be able to use quantum technologies for? An IBM engineer working on the refrigerator casing inside of which the company plans to install a 1 million-qubit quantum computer by 2030. Credit: Connie Zhou for IBM. Helen's Guests are Tobias Lindstrom, Head of Science for the department of Quantum Technology at the National Physical Laboratory and Sir Peter Knight, Professor of Quantum Optics and Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London, and principal of the Kavli Royal Society International Centre. Tobias received his PhD in Physics from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, before joining NPL as a Senior Scientist , then Principal Scientist and now head of department. During his time at NPL, Tobias has primarily worked on superconducting quantum technology. In addition to conducting research relevant for the emerging superconducting quantum computing sector, he has also pioneered the use of precision frequency metrology methods for the study of noise in superconducting resonators and qubits. Tobias is also part of a global effort to develop international standards for quantum technologies. Sir Peter is a leading academic in the field of quantum optics and has been described as "one of the UK's most influential scientists and leaders of scientific policy" by his peers. He has been the recipient of several major awards including the Royal Medal from the Royal Society and the Thomas Young Medal from the Institute of Physics. Sir Peter was President of the Institute of Physics from 2011 to 2013 and of Optica; The Optical Society of America and is also a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was also Chief Scientific Advisor until his retirement to the National Physical Laboratory and is Chair of NPL's Quantum Metrology Institute. He continues to act as an advisor to the British government. Useful Links: NPL Quantum Technologies Quantum Computing & Simulation Hub Bristol University - What is Quantum Engineering? Professor Sir Peter Donnelly, Founder and CEO of Genomics plc, aims to use cutting-edge polygenic risk scores to identify inherited DNA mutations and genetic predispositions that could lead to common diseases. In partnership with the MassMutual life insurance company, Genomics offers a voluntary test that provides personalized risk measures and advice about conversations with clinicians. If the policyholder stays healthy longer, the insurance company will get paid more premiums before paying out to survivors. Win-win all the way around. Peter explains, "Until a few years ago, if I had the entire DNA sequence from a 40-year-old who's currently healthy, I'd have learned something interesting and medically actionable in maybe 1% or 2% of cases. That's because genetics has played into medicine through diseases where there's a single change in our DNA, called a mutation, which often stops a crucial gene from working. Think cystic fibrosis or Huntington's disease. Those are conditions that are individually serious. They're rare individually, thankfully, and actually, they're collectively rare. And so until a few years ago, and now still very much the case, genetic testing was about looking for those needles in haystacks, those one or two single places that caused a problem." "Now, if I have genetic information from a 40-year-old who's healthy, I learn something medically useful in about 70% of cases. So, that massive change from 2% to 70% is because we can now measure the genetic component of risk for all of the common diseases, as I said, for heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, or prostate cancer." "What we've learned is that for any one of those diseases, if we take heart disease as an example, there's not one gene that matters for heart disease. There aren't two genes. There are a million or more places in our DNA individual positions in our DNA, which affect someone's risk of heart disease. And we've now got large enough data sets and clever enough algorithms to measure those places and combine the information to get an overall summary for someone of their genetic predisposition to heart disease." #Genomics #Genetics #PRS #PolygenicRiskScores #DrugDiscovery #Biopharma genomicsplc.com Download the transcript here

In his distinguished career he has been responsible for shows such as Big Brother, Changing Rooms and Ready Steady Cook, he's also a former chair of Arts Council England and in September 2023 he stepped down as chair of ITV. He is now co-chair of the Creative Council. On this week's programme we discussed the Media Act (was anything left out), BBC funding and the future of public service broadcasters.I see Freely, which has recently been launched as an online way of getting all the public service broadcasting in a streaming service, I see that is just the beginning. I think there needs to be further mergers. And it'll be interesting to see what happens to Channel Five. Now that it looks like the owners Paramount are selling out, because I don't think it's going to be a priority for the new American owners. The grandfather of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake is one of most influential and popular artists of his generation. A Royal Academician with work in the national collection, including Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, he is renowned for paintings and collages that borrow imagery from advertising, cinema and music. Having created The Beatles' Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band sleeve in 1967 he became the go-to album designer for other musical artists including The Who, Paul Weller, Madness and Oasis. He was knighted for services to art in 2002.Sir Peter tells John Wilson how, after a working class upbringing in Dartford, Kent, he won a place at the Royal College of Art alongside fellow students Bridget Riley and Frank Auerbach. He recalls being influenced by early American pop artists including Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and how he began making art inspired by everyday popular imagery. He chooses Dylan Thomas's 1954 radio play Under Milk Wood as a work which captivated his imagination and later inspired a series of his artworks based on the characters, and also cites Max Miller, the music hall artist known as 'the Cheeky Chappie'; as a creative influence. Sir Peter remembers how he made the iconic Sgt Pepper sleeve using waxwork dummies and life size cut-out figures depicting well-known people chosen by Peter and The Beatles themselves. He stayed up late just to hop on Zoom in his boxers and share with us his quick rise to gay adult star status. Growing up in Portugal, working for years as a flight attendant, and then landing eventually in Madrid, Sir Peter pitched himself to Tim Kruger of TimTales, convincing him that he had the goods to stand alongside the industry great. But as soon as his first scene released, the pandemic hit and he had to rely on his own content to make a splash in the scene. It worked though, and now Sir Peter is a Grabby award-winning Daddy and a Naked Sword Exclusive - a rare feat for a European performer to achieve from across the pond. He also tells us of his unique vision and entrepreneurial endeavors in the industry, with a dedicated website, toys, and even a graphic novel that depicts the exploits of our dear Sir Peter. Say yes, you'll be swooning just as we were!

The is the third short excerpt of the full conversation with Tā Tipene O'Regan who has long been on my dream list of people to interview. He is a kaumātua, Ngāi Tahu leader and Member of the Order of New Zealand. I was very humbled to sit with him and hear some of his life story and wisdom about many topics. Instead of asking about events, I asked about who has influenced him in a 2 hour long conversation. This has some excerpts from that conversation where he was sharing about Te Rangi Hīroa, Sir Peter Buck. I am grateful to Anake Goodall for helping connect us so this conversation could happen. Seeds is a project to record life stories, because they matter. You can find out about it and more than 360 other conversations at www.theseeds.nz Coming in October is the Seeds Impact Conference www.seedsconference.nz Contact: steven@theseeds.nz

In his 2023 RSA President's Lecture, Sir Peter Bazalgette will outline the current context of the creative industries and discuss opportunities to unleash the energy and potential of the sector to drive transformational change across society and the economy.Sir Peter is joined by five creative entrepreneurs, innovators across the sub-sectors of screen, CreaTech, games and fashion, whose projects exemplify industry dynamism, value and impact. These initiatives are part of a revolution in creativity driven by an escalation of creative clusters and higher education spinouts. However, the skills deficit and access to finance must be tackled to unlock the sector's full potential. Investment in research and development to influence creative industry policy and practice is critical to allow innovations to flourish and shape better futures.Find out more about the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (Creative PEC) hosted by the RSA and Newcastle University.#RSAcreativeindustriesBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join
This week we're in conversation with a special guest, someone who The Independent argued that he may be “the most influential man in British television.” Sir Peter Bazalegette. The man who brought Big Brother to our screens during his tenure at Endemol, steered the Arts Council England through a period of austerity and was recently chairman of the board of ITV. No one is better placed to make sense of the creative industries and the bubbles they perennially produce.

Spoiler alert! Captain John Staple is one of the easiest of Heyer's heroes to like. Maybe it's his all-round goodness, but maybe it's just because he's so very large. We're all powerless to resist apparently. Nell Stornoway certainly doesn't manage it for long, and we don't blame her. There's a whole host of fantastic characters in this story, from Sir Peter who still has a trick or two up his sleeve, and Chirk the highwayman who sticks to his own code, to Stogumber the Bow Street Runner with sharp eyes and a pragmatic approach to justice. We get stuck into discussing the tragedy of Sir Peter's predicament, the morality of murdering wrong ‘uns and the romance between Rose and Chirk (but you'll have to forgive us for our inability to remember how Staple is supposed to be related to Brean, and how Nell is related to Henry - our brains failed us.) “But the thing is I've got no fancy for one of these dashed suitable marriages, where you don't really care a fig for the girl, or she for you. I don't mean to offer marriage to any girl who don't give me a leveller.” Instagram: @georgetteheyerpodcast Twitter: @heyerpodcast
Professor of Statistical Science at the University of Oxford, and founder and CEO of Genomics PLC, Sir Peter Donnelly tells us about exactly what genetic screening can tell us about our health and what we can do to stay healthy regardless of our genes.
