This week on the NAAFI Break we focus on the transition 'into' as well as 'out of' the military. I first came across the post below from Andy Challen and immediately identified what I have felt for some time, the need for good mentors and role models for our children. That person who will light the flame of ambition or nurture and support to show that 'anyone can' reach their potential. That kind of person, the mentor, crops up time and time again in the transition particularly with Veterans helping Veterans. I will ask you at the end of this episode to recognize who your 'mentor' has been since deciding to leave the military? There are two jobs that everyone wants to be in the RAF, PTI or Pilot! #ifyouknowyouknowOriginal post from Andy Challen MA CMgr FInstLM MSylInnovation Champion at Inzpire LtdFor those not getting the A level (edit - or GCSE) results expected or needed today:I wanted to be an RAF pilot and decided to study A-level Geography and Modular Technology (electronics, pneumatics, structures). But I failed O Level Maths due to disrupted teenage years in a single-parent family where I believe my mother suffered mental health issues. My retake O Level maths class clashed with some of my A-level classes. I was the only person in the town studying Modular Technology (the first year it had been run so I was the test case). Each subject was taught in a different school so I cycled around the town of Stevenage trying to get to the classes on time.I skipped some of the technology classes to go to maths classes as I needed the maths to be an RAF pilot. My Headteacher found out and told me he would give me a bad reference if I did not attend and pass the Modular Technology class. So I quit subjects I really enjoyed after a year and did a 4-year apprenticeship at BAE Dynamics. I worked 4 days a week with 50 or so great colleagues in my intake year and we went to college one day a week and 3 evenings a week most terms. I went into lodgings at 17.I got the academic qualifications needed. I lived on the breadline and caught rabbits in the local woods to supplement my diet, but had no debt. I spent 4 years in the high tech industry. I planned for 5 years but at the end of the apprenticeship, most of us were not offered jobs. The Cold War was ending and the defence industry was crashing.I drove a 7.5 tonne truck (as you could in those days on a normal licence) and worked long hours delivering fresh and frozen meat and veg to pubs, hotels and hospitals. I waited for my RAF application to be processed and to attend selection. I promised the family firm I would stay on for Christmas, their busiest period.I joined the RAF and served 24 years, became a Qualified Flying Instructor and Electronic Warfare Instructor on the Tornado and reached the rank of Wing Commander. I went to Staff College and struggled through a Masters. I have O levels, and a Masters. No A levels. No degree. The flight plan is not always direct routing. Stay loose, chill your jets, find your own path.

Mohammed. A. Khan – Founder Nueheights (Biotechnology Co), Former Global CTO for New Technology at Netcracker (NEC company). Over a 25yr career Mohammed has learned some key skills to help others as an educator, advisor, consultant, mentor, scientist and athletics coach – trained some of the world's elite athletes. Mohammed's goal in life was not to have a “proper” job until he was thirty years old, Hence from 16-29 and 7 months, he played football, university , military and charity work. At 29 yrs. 7 months Mohammed walked into BT Research Labs(the first researcher ever without an under graduate degree in science), from there he joined Cisco, Sr Dir at Tellabs and finally CTO at Netcracker. In 2017 Mohammed had an epiphany moment and set up Nueheights (Biotech), since then he has delivered workshops globally around his unique process to make nutrients better absorbed. He is a board member at Medical Kiwi(medicinal Cannabis New Zealand), Medicaleaf UK(Medicinal Cannabis), Advisor to Sibelius (Oxford University), NASA and DoD US, Premier league football teams and individual players, editorial expert for The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT). “Resilience is a learned skill and perfected during adversity,” Mohammed suffered huge disappointment with the UK military, which didn't have a place for an ethnic, he also suffered racism playing football. However, Mohammed believes this made the person he is now - very focused and driven. For years Mohammed was constantly told” you cannot do this, you're not qualified to do that.” However, he took no. notice of it and once you get over one hurdle there's a blue print to work by. Having left school at 16 with one O Level, Mohammed received his BA(Business Studies Erasmus) 1994, MSc 1998( Telecommunications Aston University) . Currently studying a Biochemistry PhD(Birmingham). Outside of work he worked closely with the Global Scouting Association as the Chair of the Muslim Scouts Fellowship, under his tenure scouting became acceptable for Muslims in the UK. Mohammed has been Involved in UK Athletics as a coach and mentor. We are asked “what advice can the older me give the younger me?” Maybe, just maybe it could be reciprocal, the younger me wound say to me now“ lives a risk, crack-on, get it done!” It was this advice that set-up Nueheights. The Why? for Mohammed is really simple, everything we do is for a greater good, hence by helping others you help yourself. Nueheights was established to leave a legacy for others to prosper from. Top Tip Hard work, honesty and copious amounts of compassion. And never give the reigns of leadership to someone who states they want it, give it to the one who doesn't want to be a leader – they make great leaders. When reflecting back on early days in his life, Guy Claxton considered himself to be an unadventurous, unexceptional learner in school. Although well-liked by his teachers and well-behaved, Guy felt as though he was a middle of the road type of student. During this time his parents moved from London to a very rural area in the west midlands of England. As this was a very isolated area, Guy had no kids his age to hang around with which helped to create the conditions for him to become much more self-sufficient, imaginative and resourceful in many different ways, ultimately leading him to develop a deep love of reading and interest in exploring the countryside. It was in his mid-teens that Guy had to take some high stakes exams to help prepare for higher education. As Guy states in his own words, “Much to everybody's surprise including mine, I did unexpectedly well'. As a result of his performance on his O-Level exams, Guy experienced, as he calls it, a personality shift within himself spurring him on to believe that it was possible for him to be bright and to become intellectually and educationally successful. Little did he know it at the time, but Guy would go on to earn a double-first in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology from Oxford and eventually become an internationally renowned cognitive scientist. He is also a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Society of Arts. Guy's interest in writing early on in his life led to him become a prolific author in education having written or co-written nearly 30 books. He is best known for developing the concept of ‘learning power': a collection of skills and attitudes that underpin someone's ability to tackle complex matters with confidence, capability, and relish. Guy's come on the podcast today to really unpack his latest book The Future of Teaching and the Myths that Hold it Back and two important questions he poses are: What is the purpose of school? What does the future of education hold?Guy has a natural ability to connect with others and despite all of his accomplishments in life, he is not only down-to-earth, but also a very kind and caring person striving to impact the world through his work and advocate for every young person's right to learn in a psychologically and emotionally safe environment that not only helps them achieve success in school but also supports them to develop the skills and dispositions needed to thrive in this ever-changing, complex and uncertain world. I highly encourage to get your hands on a copy of Guy's latest book and to share it with other educators wanting to make a difference in the work they do. Guy's Bio: Guy Claxton is a cognitive scientist specialising in the nature of real-world intelligence and ways in which it can be improved through education of all kinds. Steve's brand new album is available here from AmazonUncovered by Steve HarleySTEVE HARLEY was born in Deptford, south London, on February 27th 1951, the second of five children.Due to a childhood illness, Steve spent almost four years in hospital between three and sixteen years, undergoing major surgery in 1963 and 1966. Aged 12, while in hospital recovering from surgery, Steve was first introduced to the poetry of Eliot and Lawrence, the prose of Steinbeck, Woolf and Hemingway, and the music of BOB DYLAN and realised that his life was likely to be preoccupied with words and music.Close to Christmas 1964, during that same nine months' hospitalisation at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, Carshalton Beeches, Surrey, the ward welcomed the young ROLLING STONES who were on a goodwill PR visit.Charlie Watts spent quite a time chatting with us kids, but the others seemed more interested in joking about the huge poster of THE BEATLES pinned to a wall.Steve was a pupil of EDMUND WALLER PRIMARY SCHOOL, in Waller Road, New Cross, London, a short walk from his parents' home at FAIRLAWN MANSIONS, New Cross Gate, between the ages of five and eleven. He attended HABERDASHERS' ASKE'S HATCHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL, Telegraph Hill, New Cross until seventeen. He left school without completing his Advanced Level exams. Steve later took an A-Level in English in his mid-30s.Steve's first guitar was a Christmas gift from his parents when he was ten-years-old. It was a Spanish, nylon-strung instrument. He took classical violin lessons from the age of nine to fifteen and played in his Grammar school orchestra. But he has always admitted he was a hopeless reader of music, so “must have been bluffing a lot of the time”.In the spring of 1968, Steve got his first full-time job, as a trainee accountant, at the DAILY EXPRESS newspaper in Fleet Street, London, in spite of gaining a mere 24% in his mock O-Level maths exam. But his heart was set on a career in Journalism, so being at the industry's heart was a useful stepping-stone for the nascent reporter. Interviewed by several newspaper editors, Steve finally signed indentures to train with ESSEX COUNTY NEWSPAPERS in Colchester, Essex. After three years working within the group, including stints at the Essex County Standard, the Braintree and Witham Times, the Maldon and Burnham Standard and the Colchester Evening Gazette, Steve moved back to London to work for the EAST LONDON ADVERTISER, then based in Mile End Road, in the heart of London's East End.Among many of Steve's contemporaries who have gone on to successful careers in national Journalism are JOHN BLAKE (now Managing Director of BLAKE PUBLISHING) and RICHARD MADELEY, of daytime TV fame. It was Madeley who actually took over the desk relinquished by Steve at the ELA in 1972."So, if you hadn't given it up to become a rock star," Madeley has told Steve, "I may never have got my chance to become a reporter."Steve began his singing career "floor-spotting" (singing for free as a member of the audience) in London folk clubs in 1971/72. He sang at LES COUSINS, BUNJIE'S and THE TROUBADOUR on nights featuring JOHN MARTIN, RALPH McTELL, MARTIN CARTHY and JULIE FELIX, all leading lights of the London folk movement at the time.He later joined folk band ODIN as rhythm guitarist and co-singer, which was where he met the first COCKNEY REBEL violinist, JOHN CROCKER. However, the folk scene proved a little tame for Mr Harley and, as he was constantly writing songs, formed COCKNEY REBEL as a vehicle for his own work. It was here that Steve and STUART ELLIOTT first met and worked together. Stuart drums with Steve's band on record and on tour from time to time to this day.The band signed to EMI for a guaranteed three album deal in 1972 and released THE HUMAN MENAGERIE early in '73. From this collection, a single, SEBASTIAN, became a huge European hit, staying at NUMBER ONE in HOLLAND and BELGIUM for many weeks. Other COCKNEY REBEL and/or STEVE HARLEY albums are: THE PSYCHOMODO, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, TIMELESS FLIGHT, LOVE'S A PRIMA DONNA, FACE TO FACE (LIVE), HOBO WITH A GRIN, THE CANDIDATE (all EMI), YES YOU CAN (1992), POETIC JUSTICE (1996) and THE QUALITY OF MERCY released in late 2005, plus 2 other Live acoustic CDs, STRIPPED TO THE BARE BONES TO THE and ANYTIME!One Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel single, MAKE ME SMILE (COME UP AND SEE ME), reached NUMBER ONE in 1975 in the UK and many European countries and is regularly voted among the top singles in the history of the charts, which covers six decades of releases. The Performing Rights Society has confirmed MAKE ME SMILE one of the most played records in British broadcasting. The song has been covered MORE THAN 100 TIMES in seven languages and has been featured in several movies including THE FULL MONTY (whose soundtrack album went TRIPLE PLATINUM in the UK, and PLATINUM in the USA and Australia), VELVET GOLDMINE, BEST and SAVING GRACE. The song has also been used on more than twenty TV and radio advertising campaigns around the world.Steve's other chart singles include, JUDY TEEN, MR SOFT, MR RAFFLES (MAN, IT WAS MEAN), HERE COMES THE SUN, LOVE'S A PRIMA DONNA, IRRESISTIBLE, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (with SARAH BRIGHTMAN) and A FRIEND FOR LIFE.During the eighties, Steve took time out from the rock world as his two children were going through their formative years but did perform on stage, albeit the legitimate stage. He starred as the C16th playwright Christopher Marlowe, in the musical-drama MARLOWE, which ran off-Broadway and in London. Steve's performance was described by one leading critic as "a major and moving performance."This has been taken from https://www.steveharley.com/biography.htmlSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-millwall-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It’s safe to say that Shelley James has a remarkable tale to tell. The extraordinary glass artist was ensconced in the corporate branding world – working for the likes of Imagination and Landor – before an injury to her head, sustained in a bicycle accident, completely changed her life and perspective. After a six year (yes, six year) period of convalescence, she decided to leave the business world behind and study printmaking. However, after a trip to the National Glass Centre in Sunderland she became smitten with the material and has set out to push its possibilities ever since. Always looking to collaborate with new people from different disciplines, she has worked with surgeons at Bristol Eye Hospital, physicists at Imperial College, contemporary musicians and even Sir Roger Penrose, a mathematician and philosopher of science famed for (among other things) his research with Stephen Hawking. And she has managed all this despite only scrapping a O Level in Maths. Shelley also happens to be wonderfully articulate, which is handy for a podcast like this…

In this episode, we meet George Hunt, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Sydney Water.   George is a recognised technology leader within the global utility sector. He has a successful track record in implementing technology infrastructure to support increasing customer expectations, challenging regulatory outcomes and corporate business goals.   He has held roles as a Global Consulting Partner at Wipro Digital in the UK and CIO for Wessex Water.   George completed a four year technical apprenticeship in a major engineering company, and has a Bachelor of Engineering from Birmingham University, UK and a Master of Information Systems from Kingston University, London, UK. Connecting with George You can connect with George Hunt on LinkedIn. On a story from his childhood that impacted his life My most influential teacher was my maths teacher. He encouraged two or three of us to take our maths O-Level a year early because he had faith in us. We all got A's, which was interesting. That was a defining moment. Around the age of 10, I joined the local rowing club and I can't begin to tell you how it changed my life. I suddenly found myself in a situation where I was surrounded by professional people, people who had achieved a lot. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, really professional people who were driven. I was mixing with kids who had very high aspirations and who were gearing themselves up to go to university and that couldn't have been further from where I was at that point in time. On what has made him successful The first thing is a genuine interest in how applied technology can make a difference. The welding experience I had with the welding robots was a good example of technology aiding manufacturing. The second thing is that I learned quite quickly the power of learning how to advise and influence, as opposed to tell. People are the secret sauce and if you can get a team to work for you, with you, alongside you and they believe in where you're trying to go, then you can achieve huge things. I worked for this amazing guy called John Wolf who's sadly passed away now. He was one of two people in my life that has been truly inspiring to me and made me realise the power of working with people and getting things done with people, rather than a more traditional sort of management approach, where you tell people what to do. He taught me a huge amount about the power of goodwill, the power of investing in people so that they believe in what they're doing. On getting a team to perform To win your people's hearts and minds, you have to have a compelling vision or proposition to offer them. If you sell the proposition to them, you can then sell the journey to them. And if you can sell the journey to them, you can grab their heart. I love a good analogy or story in order to help people understand what we're trying to ask them to do. How do you unlock discretionary effort? Why did you take on the challenges in your life that you took on? Not just because they're there. There must've been something that compelled you to do it. If you don't win the hearts and minds, it's really difficult to recover as you have no credibility, no goodwill credit that you can trade on when the going gets tough. Some great analogies to help guide your teams Everything worth doing in business is like a marathon; all transformations take years. So you have to have the purpose within your blood and you've got to know what the outcome is going to look and feel like. The one analogy I use is that we're trying to upgrade an aircraft whilst it's in flight. And it's such a significant programme that it's effectively like changing one of the engines whilst it's in flight. This allows people to understand the risk profile of what we're doing. So we better make sure the other engine is sound and not change too much on an aircraft that's in flight as we're introducing risk. And it's really corporate risk or reputational risk if the aircraft doesn't keep flying, so how do you feel about that risk? There's a story of JFK walking around NASA in the 1960s and he comes across this guy who's sweeping the corridor, and he asks him, "What's your job?" And he says, "I'm helping to get a man on the moon." Regardless of whatever your role is, whatever your contribution is, there was a clear mission towards achieving an outcome or supporting an outcome. We had a number of folk that were used to sitting in the grandstand criticising the play on the field. I thought, "That's just too lazy. You've either got a position on the field and you know what your role is, or you're nothing. There's one pitch. One team. One objective and no grandstands." On being relevant So the feedback was "Be relevant or get out of my way. Or get out my diary." So the feedback was "Make sure you're relevant and I'll give you time. If you're not relevant, I will not give you time." You've got to add some value or you've got to make a contribution, so I'm constantly challenging my team to stay relevant otherwise irrelevancy will actually cause them to become extinct. On the changing landscape of technology Technology is an interesting arena because it could just be outsourced or switched. So we need to be open-minded about how to change and stay relevant, rather than just saying, "We keep machines going, keep the lights on." Through the maturity of technology, rather than just being an enabling function, IT has become a partnering function. Digital will actually start to define the strategy of a lot of organisations. Don't describe what you do, start to describe what impact you have, or what contribution or what difference you could make, or what disruption you could introduce that will change the nature of the organisation. A CIO is not the technical person in the room anymore, they're actually at the heart of the future of their organisation. More technical and digital people will be sitting on boards. On the little things in leadership Those little things are simple things like knowing somebody's name, saying hello, saying goodbye, saying thank you. At the end of the day on Friday, I always walk around the floors of where I am in the Sydney Water building just telling people to go home or asking why they're staying late, or just saying, "Thanks for doing what you're doing." Simple things like that, they just pay you back in bucket loads. I have a constant, ongoing dialogue with the people that are going the extra mile for me. We operate a ‘manager once-removed' process, which allows me to be very connected to my direct report and their direct reports. I go out of my way to understand what makes somebody tick. I know when people are under pressure, so I make sure I go and support them and create an environment that makes them successful. Final message of wisdom and hope It's very easy for your moral compass to be messed around with in large corporations; you suddenly realise you're not living up to your values or you're not staying true to what you believe in. So my words of wisdom are really know who you are. Know what you stand for. Know what you believe in, and stay true to them. Opportunities will come your way and there will be opportunities that are aligned with those values, rather than you seek the opportunity only to realise you have to compromise your values.   Go ahead and listen to George's colleague, Kevin Young, our very first Inner Chief Podcast episode!

Let's cut to the chase for once... This month’s Finders Keepers Radio Show features GEORGE CLINTON and DENNIS COFFEY in person!!!! If you feel the need to read any further, on our fifth edition we ask Dr. Funkenstein himself about his favourite horror films and quiz him on the first Afro-American occult LP! Then we get "the white Jimi Hendrix" to tell us about the more obscure Sussex artists like Paul Parrish and Priscilla Coolidge while discussing his cassette only rap collection and dropping some heavyweight Coffey-breaks in between. Add a sprinkle of overused sound-effects, some O-Level amateur dramatics, tenuous micro-genres and a world record Rotary Connection namedrop count your faithful presenters Andy Votel, Pete Mitchell and Doug Shipton put a lively cast of characters in a big purple box and tie a paisley bow around it with a card that reads PSYCHEDELIC SOUL. These days the indulgent funk records that many of the Finders Keepers crew bought as teenagers are collectively worthy of their own record shop divider and with the help of childhood buddies like Mark "Boney Votel" Rathbone (and Preston soul fiend Stan), cosmic PSSW Jane Weaver, Invisible Spy Benjamin and 808 statesman Graham Massey we lay down a fine blend of obscure, obsessive, obsolete, oblivious and plain obvious spooked-out soul jams and fuzzy funk from around the globe (but mostly from the wild west). So gather round the bearskin rug for all this and much much less without a protective inner sleeve or a bottle of isopropylene in sight. The funky worm has turned... on!
