Fast cars and low income on the ATO radar Mel and Dave chat with Michelle Maynard - Accountant, Partner at Carbon GroupBought a new car over $10,000? The ATO will know about it. Why do they want to know? They are trying to match people who have declared low incomes but are able to afford expensive cars so they can kindly ask them to “please explain.” This isn’t a new concept. In fact, this program is in its 16th year and has helped the ATO find taxpayers who have concealed income, hidden wealth, and dodged their tax obligations. Accessed early release of super last year and now have new wheels? The ATO may ask how that satisfies “financial hardship” and you could be penalised. The reach of the ATO is getting wider, and the data matching is getting more refined. Time will tell how many will get caught.

In another stop and prop moment we look back at the last 14 episodes and the learnings that both Lanna and Nic captured from the experts and the media. This is the podcast to listen to get a feel for the takeaways and the highlights from each of those interviewed. This is personally such a fun look back at the work that has been done to see what stood out for each of the presenters. It's also a great chance to capture some of the key messages and if a podcast episode needs to be re-visited. The experts that we took the journey with this season included Michelle Maynard, Tony Eades, Adam Voigt, Nicolle Jenkins, Amy Jacobson, Nikki Milne, Marny Lishman, Dr Joe Kosterich, Kimm Seeling Smith, Jason Featherby, Lisanne Iriks and Demelza Leonard. The media that we chatted to included 3AW's Luca Gonano and Nine's Weekend Today Erin Bouda. These episodes particularly are wonderful as they are regulars on the #MeetTheMedia circuit and deliver such valuable advice and content for all budding experts and commentators.

Accountants have the unfortunate stereotype of being humourless and boring… Well, there is nothing boring about Accountant Michelle Maynard who is nailing it in the media on all matters of money advice and analysis. Hers is a voice and a face that you will be familiar with if you live in Perth as she regularly appears on 6PR and Nine News as their go-to expert. Michelle's leap into media started after she attended a #MeetTheMedia event and made quite an impression on several journalists she met, including Oliver Peterson from 6PR, who had Michelle on his program that very week. She hasn't looked back from then and is getting regular media engagements across all forms of media in WA. Michelle was not a natural media talent and has worked on her delivery and media presence, to now present as confident and poised. Her appetite to do media is huge and she will say “yes” every time, which makes her very media friendly. This episode of The Experts podcast is a special one for an one in professional services who are looking to make an impact in media. You will struggle to find a better example of dedication, persistence and quality than the one Michelle Maynard sets.

Making sense of the new working from home tax rulesThe ATO have announced they will be allowing those working from home to claim 80c per hour as a tax deduction in their 2020 tax returns. This is to cover the cost of electricity and home running costs while working from home from 1 March to 30 June. This deduction has increased from the previous 52c per hour rate (which is still in effect for the remainder of the year). To be eligible you must have to do work from home and keep track of your hours. There are other tax deductions you can claim when working from home such as portion of the home internet, home phone and office equipment. Chartered Tax Advisor Michelle Maynard outlines what deductions you can and can’t claim under the new rules and has some advice for those who’ve purchased new office equipment to enable them to work from home due to COVID-19.

Visitors can either watch the action unfold or be part of the story-line, infiltrating the artwork as live (and dead) bodies. You Oughta Be In Fangs is their first ‘party’ environment/installation, where party-goers, immersed in the set, become characters in a speak-easy riddled with the undead.
