As advanced as human beings are we have an incredible knack of not communicating well when it comes to death or grief. It is something we will all experience, some earlier and more than others, but it is certain. Dealing with grief is our chat this week with Michelle Moriarty who is the Founder of Grief Connect a business started from her own lived experience of losing her husband at the tender age of 38. The Award-winning business is on a mission to support those that have suffered loss and how we might better communicate. The language we use is so powerful and Grief language forms the foundation of human connection, particularly during moments of profound loss. It encompasses more than just spoken words; it's a complex interplay of tone, facial expressions, and gestures—non-verbal cues that convey what words often cannot. Effective grief communication goes beyond mere expression; it involves creating spaces where discussions about loss feel safe and supported. Grief is tough to deal with particularly for the one experiencing it but there is a way we can support and help through our own communication. An amazing podcast by a very brave and driven woman.
Suzanne Dodds is a water filtration expert, and the Managing Director of Complete Home Filtration. She joins us for a chat on The Experts podcast to discuss the quality of water in Australia, the additives to our drinking water and the necessity to look after our most precious resource. Suzanne discusses the media's reaction to idea of introducing filtration. It is very clear that their marketing approach is more of an ‘education‘ program rather than a 'scare tactic. This is the key to media success when effectively talking about an issue and particularly a product. We are very lucky in Australia to have the water quality that we have. It's the chlorine and fluoride additives in tap water that are seeing many consumers looking to make a choice to extract these by adding filtration in homes and offices.
Kelly is an expert in logistics, supply, and imports, a crucial industry for business and consumers alike here in Australia. Her foray into media started when she attended a #MeetTheMedia event in Perth, and she hasn't looked back. Kelly is one of the most authentic experts running around. She was thrust into media when National TV was one of her first media appearances, and whilst incredibly nervous, she did a fantastic job. Kelly's expertise and knowledge of her industry translates beautifully for all forms of media. She has a natural charm that audiences connect with, and her bravery means she's not afraid to tackle bureaucracy and unions! This is a great listen for those thinking they might like to contribute to the conversation in the media.
The Australian Federal Election was it over before it even began? The cost-of-living election has just got outrageously confusing. Talking to Daily Telegraph journalist James Willis this week on the the podcast we get down to the things that mattered. What the media was focused on. The role of social media and the failure of the Dutton campaign and policies to connect in media. Has this election turned from a cost-of-living debate to who will do the least damage if elected? The housing crisis looks to only worsen with the approaches of both parties... The social media election... They have dabbled with it before but they appear to be all in on this now. Future of the Greens? Teals? Trumpet of Patriots? What can they expect? Which party (if any) is speaking to women in this election? Any hidden twists, turns, surprises before May 3?

Danielle Laidley is no stranger to the media. As a player in the West Coast Eagles' inaugural team and then after being traded to North Melbourne Football Club, Dani experienced two very different levels of media interest in AFL players. Then as coach of North Melbourne, Dani experienced some of the toughest scrutiny from sports media and fans. And in 2020, she experienced the voracity of the media when Victoria Police leaked images of Dani to the media and revealed to the public that Dani was undergoing a gender transition, having suffered gender dysphoria throughout her life. The coverage was frenzied and prolonged. This week, Nic Hayes is joined by Danielle Laidley who shares her experience in the media across her career, and what she's doing in the media now that she's taken back the narrative, working in transgender advocacy and as a regular sports columnist. Dani and Nic discuss: What it's like to be in the cut and thrust of weekly games and media spotlight as an AFL player and coach, riding the waves of speculation and interest in North Melbourne moving to the Gold Coast, her teammate Wayne Carey, and the scrutiny following lost games among many other fascinating moments in her career How she flew under the radar in Melbourne after being traded from West Coast to North Melbourne How writing a book and filming documentary Revealed – Danielle Laidley: Two Tribes in partnership with Eddie McGuire all came about Dani's pick for top five NMFC players and her pick for the GOAT – “you could kick the ball anywhere, and he'll mark it” The Experts Podcast is hosted by media professional and commentator, Nic Hayes. James Szabo, Executive Producer, 3AW Drive with Jacqui Felgate Jimmy Szabo has many strings to his bow. Most prominently he is the Executive Producer of Melbourne's 3AW Drive program, moving over from mornings in December 2024. Ben Fordham, 2GB Breakfast host Nic speaks with one of the most powerful voices in Australian media - 2GB Breakfast Show host Ben Fordham. Ben has been at the helm of Sydney's 2GB Breakfast Show since mid 2020, taking over the mic from veteran broadcaster Alan Jones. Ben first started his radio career at 2UE, and in 1997 won his first Walkley Award. He's been with the Nine Network since 1999 and has worked on a range of programs including 60 Minutes and Today Show, before returning to his first media love – radio. He was at the helm of 2GB's Drive Show for a decade before he became Breakfast host and he and his team now set the nation's news agenda. In this chat, Nic discovers: The text exchange with Anthony Albanese that had Ben breaking one of the biggest political stories of 2024. What drives Ben to break news – it's the “I know something that you don't” element. Why differing opinions matter in the voice of middle Australia. How Ben finds his best producers. Why he initially didn't want to do the breakfast show… “The coward in me said no”. And what Ben's go-to karaoke song is. The energy and enthusiasm that you get from this chat with Ben is infectious and the cameo role from a former producer is a laugh out loud moment. There are a lot of takeaways from this for both media and experts. Thanks for listening to The Experts Podcast.
We are back but slightly different to what you are used to... Nic Hayes is going SOLO. After 200 episodes of The experts Podcast and over 300 episodes of the Brand Newsroom before that it is time... We say goodbye to Carmen Braidwood an absolute champion of communication and training. Nothing sinister other than we both have our own projects that we are in need of delivering. Carmen is still a close colleague and friend and we do wish her the very best with her work in 2025. OK so let me tell you a little secret. I have for a while been thinking about a solo podcast that I get to interview my media mates and some amazing experts. I still want to get their backstory told, their motivations identified. I want to give you everything that you need to understand what it takes. What it takes to be an effective communicator with media, stakeholders, colleagues, clients and most importantly ... your audience. 2025 we are back with the podcast but over Summer you are going to get a taste of what we are looking to achieve. I so look forward to being in your ears in 2025. Best, Nic

It is his drug of choice if you like to get what is in his head onto paper. Gary talks about his appetite to continue to learn. He keeps on discovering new ways to express, amplify and engage media over these years. His $2M worth of media generated is an incredible achievement so far this year. This isn't a let's get stuck into Roxy Jacenko podcast it is more the lessons learned for brands and businesses and what to do in a crisis. During the week Phoebe Netto of Pure Public Relations did a video on LinkedIn calling out the behaviour and even our expectations of failed marketing campaign by one of Australia's best-known PR. It was a shambles form the beginning, and it still has a lot more to play out in both the courts and dare I say it on social media. What can brands learn from this failed stunt? Why is this almost 'modus operandi' of Roxy and how does she just move on from this? The team discuss in this special edition of The Experts Podcast.
The very sad passing of John Blackman this week has brought back the Experts Podcast a little earlier than expected. John Blackman is a name that you can very easily put next to Bert Newton, Ernie Sigley, Darryl Summers as a media legend. The fast wit and comedy genius of the man saw him at the top of his game in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Well known for his contribution on mandatory watching Hey Hey it Saturday he was the glue that kept everything together. The characters that he conjured up, the delivery was quick and swift and the humour was off the charts. This is a chance to get to know John a little better from someone that worked with him and stayed in touch regularly through the good times and not-so-good times. Evan Broadway was a young panel operator when he got to work with John... and stayed in contact with regularly over all these years. Come have a listen to some behind the scenes moments with the media legend that is John Blackman.
There is enough crisis going on in the media. What do you need to do to protect yourself? What will media be wanting from you? What can you do to protect your brand and yourself? Carms and Nic riff ... crisis management with some absolute GOLD advice.
There is nothing more certain than death and taxes, but you can all be sure that there will be a time when we are looking to purchase a property. It is getting increasingly difficult to get into the property market, but our next guest is confident that the emerging generations know what they want, know how to get it, and will not let anything get in their way. Chris Foster-Ramsay or as he is known in media more these days as simply ‘CFR' is the finance and mortgage broker to the everyman out there. He has a real focus on “Mums and Dads,” and this has made his content, opinions, and view far more relevant to mainstream media. He is on the ground getting finance to those that are the audience of the media he engages. What is inspiring from the podcast is the motivation, the strategic direction, and the effort that CFR puts into every engagement. Having a background in media that stems back to his parents has given him a respect and greater understanding of the media cycle in print and electronic media. There is a dedication that exceeds most and no greater example of this is that he goes into the 3AW studio for a regular overnight gig. There is a characteristic that media wants from an expert or a commentator that CFR delivers in bucket loads. That is the energy and keenness to be a part of the media landscape. The delivery of this kind of content is always received from both media and audience in an appreciative way. You cannot fake that; you need to have it in you. The media engagement is a wonderful way to amplify your authority and the way you do it adds the cherry on top when it comes to establishing reputation.
The 2024 Media Landscape Report delivered by Medianet is a report all communicators, public relations and media professionals need to have a look at. The yearly report is a wealth of knowledge and background information into the media and public relations industry. Amrita Sidhu the Managing Director of Medianet is back talking to us at The Experts to get her takeaways and observations from the report. The focus of the report was Artificial Intelligence. The emergence, the use, the concerns, the effects that AI will have on journalism and the industry. The data does demonstrate a real fear of the unknown here and at the same time some good that can come from it. The report dives into a raft of topics including salaries, social media, the motivations of journalists, the sources of stories and where journalists get their content. There is a reinforcement of the past years to be fast and quick to the point in your pitch. There was also a very strong message coming from the journalists that they wanted the consumers to know that their work is done with integrity and quality was important to them. The report is always fascinating with such a large pool of media personnel engaging this each year across digital, print, radio, TV and 11% of respondents are from the podcasting space. Amrita delivers a very thorough report each year that is relevant to the small business owner as it is to the international public relations firm.
The whole Australian media world is discussing the CEO of Woolworths performance on ABC Four Corners on Monday. It was the classic media training video that will be used for years on what not to do. Everyone has had their say on the topic but Carmen and Nic thought we might break it down a little differently. The real issue with a story like this might send other CEOs and leaders of industry back into the bunker. The reality with this performance and the announcement of the retirement of the CEO is a little too much to take in one week for the media. The connection between the interview on Monday and the plans to leave in September is just too close to see how it can be any other way. It is just not a good look either way from Australia's biggest retail supermarket and employer. Nic and Carmen walk through the good and the bad of the interview. What CEOs and leaders can learn from the experience and where they might take confidence that they will not be thrusted into the spotlight for a seriously silly and avoidable mistake. Messaging, good advisors, preparation, practice, and a little bit of humility and empathy is going to go far in scenarios like this. Do not let this incident put you off from engaging media. Instead use this as an opportunity to advance yourself, your people and those in the communications of the brand to get some media training. Work on this as it is not natural to have a microphone and camera thrusted in front of you, but it can be managed.
The guest this week was scheduled in for the second half of the year not today. There was no way that this person was going to have enough media in their portfolio to be able talk about their experiences, their feelings, their concerns, and challenges. When you are a workplace expert, and the federal government is pushing through the right to disconnect legislation then you are going to be busy taking media calls. Steve Sharp is a culture curator and as mentioned earlier a workplace expert that has over twenty years' experience working in BIG corporate. Steve was introduced to Media Stable by his mentor and professional speaker Amanda Stevens and has had some wild media experience in the last month. We had to get him on the podcast to talk us through the emotions, feelings, concerns and worries that Steve has experienced with this quick success. When the government is trying to put legislation through that impacts working Australians you are going to get a reaction, and this has been big. The media is always looking for sound, direct and quality observations from the community and Steve ticked all these boxes. Radio and television came calling from the Media Board and in true Steve fashion he said YES to them all. Steve had to work through issues of imposter syndrome, panic, fear, and to get his message right. The nature of media is that the conversation can take any direction particularly on talkback radio. The ability to stay focused, clear messaging and staying true to your values is more difficult when a microphone and camera thrusted under your nose with a national audience. He did it with flying colours and this is a great listen to those that are considering jumping in or jump out. Steve was also an attendee of Sydney #MeetTheMedia and did very beautifully presenting his expertise and making eye contact with the media. The experience of that event has certainly made it possible for him to get media traction. Understanding the media cycle and what the media is looking for has helped with his delivery of content and execution of an interview.
Carmen and I wanted to kick off the year with one of the best. If you have been listening to the podcast for a while or if this is your first time, we love speaking to producers of radio programs. When you get a chance to speak to the Executive Producer of Australia's leading talkback station you know it is going to be special. There is even going to be a movement that will drive from this asking the question “Why isn't Ross Stevenson in the ACRA Radio Hall of Fame?” We are going to start the movement #Ross4HallofFame. Mark Davidson is the Executive Producer of 3AW Breakfast with Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft, and he has the pedigree of a media elite. “Scorcher” is his nickname and while Mark wished he had a better story around the origin of the nickname he has been with the station in some form more than others. What is very humbling during this chat with this producer while he sits at the top of the radio game he is continuing to seek and search for greater success. It would be easy to sit on the top and look down but the team that Mark works with are continuing to find new opportunities. A photographer, a producer, a storyteller, and one of the great gatekeepers to an incredibly special program there is so much to learn. There is no denying that we did spend more time discussing Ross Stevenson, but we certainly get an understanding of the program that they are a team. Do not talk politics, do not talk religion, and try to make it a happy place is the model that have made this program a success. The “Rumour File” at 7.05am is still the most listened to 15 minutes of radio in this country and it is not just what Victorians are listening to but so many more across the country. Curiosity is the key behind the success Ross Stevenson and his longevity according to Mark. What is new in the world of the young people that put this program together? They are his inspiration. There is no doubt the on-air chemistry between Ross and Russel has worked for this duo. Mark has been at the station with three different owners, and it is Nine that just lets them get on with the show. A very smart move from Nine as you certainly do not try fix something that is certainly not broke.
The episode where you find out what it takes to be a media asset. A term that is often used by Nic Hayes to get experts and leaders of industry to start thinking like a true asset to media. Be available, be good at it and want to do this. It is the best marketing and brand awareness you can for your business.
This is all about your ability to generate stories on your own. You are a story generator if you know how to do this. If you don't ask WHY? Get busy finding your assets and those that can help you find your audience. Fuel it up. Get the motor running. Your #Storytelling engine.
Which is your preferred social media platform? Do you need to be on them all? Where will you get the most bang for your buck? Nic and Carms walk through the different social platforms and where you should be amplifying your content and messages.
Creating memorable and quality content is the goal for content creators... It is a challenge for so many reasons other than just the skill of being able to develop, write and produce content it is also connecting and engaging audiences. This classroom series with Nic and Carms works through ideas you can implement in making your content memorable.
This is the episode where Nic and Carmen look back at the year of podcast episodes. What caught their eye, their attention and what made a difference. This is a great episode to consume particularly if you are a first timer to #TheExpertsPodcast. Havea safe and merry Christmas, a fantastic New Year and a prosperous 2024. Look out for our summer classroom series in January. Best, Nic and Carms
One of my pet peeves and I do not even know why it irks me so much is the software Calendly that people offer anyone really to book a time in their calendar for you to meet up. It was a post by our guest today that caught my attention and I wanted to break this down further because it is a mistake that so many make when building connections, relationships, and rapport with a client. It is also a great message for those working in the media that you need to build a relationship. Julia Ewert is a sales strategist and negotiator that has her own media profile brewing along nicely with regular appearances in print and on radio. Her most powerful media is her use of LinkedIn which this post on Calendly certainly caught our attention. It is simple as this you are relying on hope that they book in not your reputation or relationship with them. While we understand that there is an element of convenience for both parties using this appointment booking software it should never be the first port of call. Once relationship is established and maturing this will work but to start it is a mistake that so many are making. Julia walks through some of the alternatives and how you can establish a greater connection ahead of that first meet. It is simple and it works. You need to win the ‘hearts and handshakes. A fantastic chat with Julia that started on the topic of Calendly but moved to sales and what businesses can do when it comes to revenue for business. The most critical element of any business and an area that so many do poorly. Julia is a trainer and educator in the art of sales and really talks a lot of sense when it comes to generating income. As an old sales enthusiast I loved the chat and there is some fantastic advice for all businesses at the end of the podcast to help kick off 2024.
If there is one guarantee in media that we can make is that psychologists are great talent and always in demand. As professionals they are master storytellers and able to break down sometimes complex issues into very easy to understand content that media across radio, television and print are seeking. The unusual phenomenon with psychologists and their relationship with media can be very complicated as they tend to be more conscious of the responsibility they have as a mouthpiece of their industry. Dr Donna Stambulich a Perth based psychologist is making an impact in the media across all the platforms with her unique personal approach. Topics such as domestic violence, coercive control, addiction are areas that are under the spotlight, and these are in her wheelhouse of expertise. Her drive to work in the media comes from a desire to reach out to more people to help with an attitude to want to be known. This is a perfect formula for a successful expert in the media. Right through the podcast you will gather from the energy and the passion from Donna that she is on the road to greater success. This is supported by a very clear plan and direction that Donna has with where she wants to be. A regular breakfast TV spot or a column is not going to be far away for this expert and 2024 is likely to be the year for that to happen. The inspiring characteristic of this expert is that she wants to be in the media, she wants to get better, and she wants more. “Zone of Genius” was coined by Carmen that I think all experts need to get in. The nerves, the fear and the in trepidation that comes from engaging media is real and this is great advice to Donna when it comes to working with television. Another fantastic hashtag was also coined during the podcast was #BeLikeDonna in her attitude, willingness, and enthusiasm to play a role in the media. If every commentator, business owner and expert followed a similar path to Donna they will discover what it is to be a ‘media asset'.
We have interviewed a lot of producers of radio on The Experts Podcast, but it is the breakfast producer that we are fascinated by because of the time, the speed, the responsibility to kick off the day with compelling radio is enormous. That pressure while felt by the presenters is felt even more so by those responsible for the show behind the glass, the producers. It is wonderful to get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to get a breakfast radio show together and this Adelaide radio royalty delivers it to us today. Lucy Lokan is the Executive Producer of Fiveaa breakfast program with David Penberthy and Will Goodings. A breakfast program that is designed to educate, inform, and entertain the people of Adelaide when they wake up. Lucy is very organised and diligent when it comes to her routine, and we get an insight into what her day looks like. This kind of information will help all listening to help prospective experts and storyteller what is required to get a story up, or how and when to pitch. Getting an insight into Lucy and the presenters is helping you and helping the presenters. The local aspect of breakfast radio is really hit home by Lucy when asked what makes a good story. The mentioning of suburbs and local identities really hits home with an audience. It might not be their area, but they know where it is. The other success story behind this hit talkback show is a finely tuned and structured program that knows the listeners. The team know each other well, trust each other and genuinely are having fun putting the program together. If you have ever tuned into Fiveaa Facebook Live where the whole program is streamed, you can see the proof there. Lucy fell into broadcasting after completing her law degree, it was by chance that she ended up in sales role at a radio station and then a move over to producing. While Lucy does say she likes the behind-the-scenes role when time comes to fill-in on air Lucy is an outstanding broadcaster. Naturally gifted storyteller herself and understands who the audience and what they want. We the Experts Podcast wouldn't be too surprised if you see this very talented producer hosting her own show in the future.
Putting the “No” in November was a LinkedIn post that caught my attention earlier this month because the idea and concept seemed quite radical. No onboarding of new clients in the month of November or December for that matter by a digital marketing and social media agency Dark Horse. That's right they just say no and it isn't a no for long but if you want to work with them you need to come back next year. We explored the idea on The Experts Podcast. Nicole Jameson is known to the podcast and has been on before. Her energy and attitude is infectious when it comes to delivering on marketing and communications strategies but this concept might be too much for some. No new clients are on boarded for such solid reasons that it will take off. In short the reasons that businesses are too emotional, not prepared to do the work, the agency itself is snowed under are just three of the drivers to say No. What the podcast is able to do for business owners is give them a chance to look inward and work out if it is worth bringing on a new client so late in the year. The agency is busy working with current clients, staff are tired and looking to get to the end of the year. Saying No now but Yes later is going to be a winner for both agency and client. Many will struggle with this concept because the bottom line drives so much of business today but it really shouldn't be at the detriment of staff and quality of work. Nicole Jameson walks through some of the predictions for 2024 in the digital space and one prediction is going to blow your mind. Also over the summer and Xmas break Nicole gives some hot tips to get “digital fit”. There is so much businesses can do to get themselves ready for a big year ahead. You can even reach out to Nicole to get in line for next year right now. She might say No now but it will be a Yes later.
The longest serving media professional that has been attending the Melbourne #MeetTherMedia from its inception is our next guest on #TheExpertsPodcast. In fact, she has is only second to Nic who has hosted every one of the 35 events that have taken place since 2015. The reason our television journalist is always on the cards is because for years she has been voted as the giving and informative journalist to our experts and attendees of this unique and amazing event. Kristy Mayr is a Channel Seven journalist for both news and Weekend Sunrise. You can't miss her, and she will be a regular that you will identify the minute you see her. Kristy covers the light, moderate and hard stories that is put in front of her and listening to her recall the moment that she was first on the scene for the Rosie Batty story. You can hear the pain and the concern for the mother that has lost her son to domestic violence and murder. Kristy delivers so much great advice through the podcast on what experts can expect for the news. The tips are so straight forward that anyone can apply that to their media. The most appealing characteristic of Kristy is that she is so human in her approach to everything. The perception that media professionals are angry, cynical, and heartless is so further from the truth with Kristy. She is a mum, a wife, a fantastic storyteller and so giving. If you have ever been to #MeetTheMedia Melbourne, you will have met Kristy along with dozens of other fantastic journalists from Victoria. There is a saying when you are on a good thing stick with it and I like to think that with Kristy and you get the feeling she feels the same when it comes to educating, meeting, informing the experts of tomorrow. Nic is fully aware that he is not supposed to have media favourites, but I think you will find that Kristy is up the top somewhere.
What if you are trying to get awareness for an event? Trying to make a day out for the family in the media? Trying to get the third most popular pet in the world a moment in the media. It's not easily done without the right help and support but when you can pitch a story that is relevant to the media's audience you will be a hit. Our next guest is the President of the South Australia Budgerigar Association, and he is a breeder, owner, and ‘budgie' enthusiast. Troy Holmes is a robotics expert by trade, but his hobby and passion is budgerigars. We start off the podcast discussing his negative experience with media a long time ago when it came to a valuation of his business. The experience was aggressive, intrusive, and not particularly nice. This far too common for many businesses and it could have been a major roadblock if Troy wasn't able to put that aside to promote his upcoming event “Budgie Fest”. Nic and Carmen talk to Troy about his amazing ‘earned media' success and walk through some of the hits that he got. Everything from getting David Penberthy of Fiveaa Breakfast on the judges' couch to doing a cross from the Qantas Lounge toilet to Mix 102.3 Ali Clarke Breakfast Show. The media interest was enormous and the major hook for the story was the unique quirkiness and the ‘family friendly' element. The biggest hook in the end was the natural character of Troy and the way he has engaged with media. It is a great reminder to all experts and business owners that you can attract media and amplify stories if you pitch the story with audiences in mind. The other big asset you have is that the story is family friendly, it is personal, it is a real human story that connects. The website engagement on the Budgerigar Association after the Ali Clarke Show went through the roof. Previous attempts to get people interested saw 52 people tun up to an event. Budgie Fest had over 800 people walk through the doors because of a successful media campaign and Troy's determination to make this event known.
Nic and Carms look back at the series of #MeetTheMedia in Melbourne and Sydney. Some of the lessons learned and tips for experts and brands on how to effectively engage media.
Without any doubt a well put together Opinion Editorial piece in the paper is going to have more impact than most media you could ever produce. An Op-ed as we like to call them are a think piece, that establishes authority, it builds character and strength in your brand and character. It what we read and don't just glaze over. It can inspire, educate, influence and change behaviour. The very best at it are held in high esteem. You just need to do a few things to make sure you are on that stage and in the running to getting your Op-Ed published. Media Engagement Manager Emily Morgan is one of the professional writers at Media Stable that helps a series of experts get their thoughts, views and opinions together the way the media will publish them. There is a little bit of formula, timing, relevance, original thought- and straight-out opinion when it comes to writing these powerful pieces of content. Nic jokes that there are more of Emily's words in his pieces than his own, but Emily knows how to craft the piece of writing from good to GOLD. This podcast is full of useful tips to make that piece that you have in you get potentially published. One of the obvious tips is to make sure that you have support and a second eye to go over your work. To ‘kill the darlings' and to also keep you on track with a piece of content worthy of an Op-Ed. This is most certainly one of the toughest media achievements that any personal and business brand can achieve but it is so possible when it is done right. You will enjoy this chat with this writing expert and what you might be able to do yourself when it comes to writing. There is always risk expressing your opinion in a public way, but I think it is even riskier when you don't. People are inspired and follow your leadership and beliefs. They are looking for something to connect with you and this is one of the best platforms to do it. Get your writing hat on or grab that bottle of red as Nic might say.
When you want to understand what the future of media looks like you need to go to where they start. You need to go to the nursery where emerging students today are going to be the media of tomorrow. Our guest this week teaches these students to be broadcasters, newsreaders, journalists, announcers and anything that takes their fancy in the media sector. The success rate of this course is through the roof, and we get to sit down with the person that runs the program. Andrea Burns is the course Coordinator of the Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting and herself an award-winning journalist, a speaker, a trainer and media commentator. You will hear Andrea describe this as the job that brings her such great joy. The course has such a rich history of stewardship that Andrea details, but it is her own course now. We get a chance to go through what are the individual's characteristics of those looking to work in media. It isn't just for the youth as there a lot of mature students looking to change up their career path. Life experience is valuable for a broadcaster as you can reach into a greater toolkit of options when it comes to working in the media. Some former students are mentioned and where they have come from, their experiences, their challenges and what they have been able to achieve. The key to being a good journalist is to be curious. The two characteristics of a future broadcaster is to demonstrate enthusiasm and potential when applying for the course. Right now, the applications are open for the course, and it is a destination course because of its success rate and the practical experience that you get. When listening to Andrea you can hear the passion and the drive that she has inside her belly to continue the success of this remarkable program.
When our guest posted a video on social media that was irking her in the industry of communications and marketing, we knew we had to get her back on the podcast. In her own words we can plan and construct posts that we hope to get attention, but it is often a personal message, rant almost on practices by others that will get the most attention. The awards Industry is making a lot of money out of naïve and susceptible people who are just looking to compete. What can you do to protect yourself and call out this disturbing trend. Well respected marketer and communications expert Mia Fileman of Campaign Del Mar called out the poor behaviour of the awards that multiple industries are involved in. It is in the same space as a pay to play model that Nic has been very passionate fighting in the ‘fake media' sites promoting businesses in a perceived earned media space. The same for Awards where you don't get a look in if you don't pay for the social media tiles, advertising or support in some way financially. The team aren't anti-Awards. The Telstra Business Awards and excellence Awards that are promoted by reputable associations are still what all businesses should be aspiring to win. It's the Awards that there are no disciplines, no quality control, no assessment and in some cases no application that we want to see phased out. Also, the behaviour of those that have paid for the Award to stop pretending and deceiving their audiences that they are Award winners. A full-on chat where we have tried not to name or call out anyone, but you will be the best judge of what a fake award is and what isn't. We at least give you some good parameters to work through this quite murky behaviour that is preying on the weak and maybe less deserved. All that said there are genuine and amazing Award winners, but potential recipients will have to do their homework to keep their reputation and their budgets in check.
This is the second of two special episodes from Experts Podcast co-host, Carmen Braidwood's key takeaways at the 2023 Women in Media annual conference. If you missed it, the episode immediately before this one breaks down Ita Buttrose's wake up call - encouraging women who've built any kind of career in the media to choose to stay and affect change at executive level, instead of giving up. In this episode, Carmen takes a look at the keynote address from Day 2, delivered by much-loved Australian broadcaster, and author Leigh Sales. Entitled "The Craft of Journalism", Sales' address detailed the lessons learned while interviewing the country's best journalists for her latest book, Storytellers, that we can all use to be better people. Have a listen as Carmen breaks these down with insights just for media assets to takeaway and implement right away.
In this episode, the first of two specials direct from the 2023 Women in Media Conference in Sydney, Experts Podcast co-host, Carmen Braidwood shares her key takeaways from the opening keynote, by WIM patron and media legend, Ita Buttrose. Whether you're an expert hoping to be placed in the media, personal or business brand looking to leverage legacy media to grow, or even a media professional looking for fresh inspiration - these next two episodes are for you. In part 1, Carmen shares Ita's wake up call to women with established media careers, urging them not to leave the industry. Drawing on data gathered in the 2023 Women in Media annual report, which revealed the majority of women in media are dissatisfied with their career progression, Carmen reflects on her own career experience and decision to start a business instead of moving back into fulltime work in broadcasting. When you're done with this special, look out for part two, as Carmen shares the things REAL people can learn from the skills exhibited by the best journalists, from Day 2 keynote presenter, author and broadcaster, Leigh Sales.
The change of the seasons from Winter to Spring will bring a smile to many as we fast approach Summer but there is another change going on that excites business owners, experts and leaders of industry. The change in the media cycle where AFL and NRL enters finals, and we start to see a close of winter sport. Add the departures of maybe two of the most influential media personnel in 24 hours of Melbourne's ABC Radio Virginia Trioli and 3AW's Neil Mitchell. Nic and Carmen love getting together to riff media, communications, storytelling, presenting and broadcasting. The intention for this edition of the Experts Podcast is to fire up business owners and experts to get out there and own their space at this time in the media cycle. The unexpected resignations and announcements from both Virginia and Neil are just a little too much to handle. This episode can be described as a pep talk, a coach's fire up, a wake-up call. Whatever you want to call it, but the truth is here. The media cycle is shifting towards a new position that works in the favour of the content producer and expert, but it still needs to be delivered well. The media is looking for more, but it won't just accept anything, and neither should it. The enthusiasm and energy that you will feel from the chat on this podcast is what is needed to engage the media at this time. It is your time to start making an impact on media when there is an opportunity, and the time is now. The best advice is to get to a #MeetTheMedia in October, reach out to a PR or Media Stable to start producing content that works for the audience of the media.
Leadership has been in question for the past two decades. Both political and business leaders have been under the microscope more than what they have ever been but has there really been a big drop in the level of leadership? Have we just changed? Has social media and technology made it impossible for leaders to lead? This week on The Experts Podcast we talk to a leadership coach, mentor, speaker and a former elite sports person that trains future leaders. Craig Johns is up and about with many hats as he traverses through the leadership and the speaker's world. Craig has a strong coaching and elite sports experience in both field hockey and ironman. He was brought up in an environment where coaching was a big part of his life with family members holding key roles. It was inevitable really that he would head down this pathway. There are some fantastic observations by Craig on what makes a good leader. There certainly has been a shift in leadership and our expectations are very different today. The media and the fact that everyone is walking around with a mobile phone makes all leaders far more accountable all the time. Something that Hawke, Keating, and Howard would never have had to endure and maybe we weren't as aware of behaviour that would be questionable today. The media tends to want to ask Craig when leadership is poor and rarely looks at positive leadership. “Political leaders are far too focused in combative mode than in collaborative mode.” One of the messages that Craig hits home with is that leaders “need to know when to lead and when to follow.” Which we are seeing more of in our family, business, sporting, political spaces where delegation is key. There are other observations that leaders and aspiring leaders can take on to improve their performance in this podcast as the team dives into other leaders both on a local and a global stage.
Earlier in the year we covered off the 2023 Media Landscape Report that is put together annually by Medianet and in that podcast we only covered the journalist research that gave us intelligence how the media were going. This podcast today is all about the public relation professional, the communicator, the PRO, the flack that is looking after a business and brand that needs to tell their story. The report is fascinating reading with insights that might just reinforce your beliefs and remind you of the challenges that the industry faces both from a personal and business perspective. Amrita Sidhu the Managing Director of Medianet joins Nic on the podcast again to talk through the findings of the report with the focus on the public relations industry. This report covers everything from burnout to exclusives, from relationships to embargoes, from salaries to top story sources. It is an action-packed podcast covering off the key concerns of the communications industry and its desire to reach best practice. The wonderful news for the PR industry is that the media release still plays a very important role in the sources that media uses for their platforms. This rated in number two just behind direct relationships that media uses to source their content. If you have been feeling the pressure, feeling out of sorts, or just looking for some confirmation about some the practices that you have in place as communicators. The talking points in this podcast will scratch your itch as they are what 300 communications professionals have raised as their challenges, concerns and goals. Some of the great lines that were raised in the podcast from the research “quality of pick up is more valued than quantity” hits home as the communications industry has matured and doesn't just look at volume. Another hot tip for the PR professionals for which many are practicing is that “PRs need to think like journalists” and with 35% of the industry having a start in journalism this is happening all the time.
