The value of the global trade of goods today is approximately 30 trillion US dollars. That's 83 billion dollars per day of goods being transported all over the world across land, air, and sea. But trade is nothing new. In ancient times, trade began as a barter system in which people exchanged one object for another. People traded animal skins or services for food, weapons, clothing, and spices. Some primitive societies even used shells or pearls as currency, but during the 18th century, coins and money currencies became more prominent. Trade has boomed over the last two centuries to the point where we are all involved in it every day of our lives. Most of us regularly trade in the local supermarket, where we can find almost anything we need in one place rather than having to visit multiple stores. It's made shopping so much more convenient. These self-service super shops offer a wide variety of food, beverages, and household products under one roof. They offer a huge range of brands and product types. In fact, on average, there are around 40K items in the store. The main supermarkets in Australia are Woolworths, Coles, IGA, and Aldi. But have you ever wondered how they began? So, how did one of Australia's largest supermarket chains begin? Well, Gary Kent, as we follow in the footsteps of Sir George James Coles, a businessman and philanthropist, who changed how we shop, do business, and live. His story will amaze and inspire you.

What do you get when you mix creativity, hustle, and a bit of chaos? A viral product brand that lands on Nordstrom's shelves—twice. In this episode, I sit down with Alisha Athreya, the powerhouse founder behind KURVWEAR. and Don't Eat My Candle, two product-based businesses that have achieved what most brand owners dream of: retail placement in stores like Nordstrom, Woolworths, Priceline, and The Iconic. But here's the kicker—Alisha did it all without outside funding, without a PR agency, and while still in university. From learning to sew on her mom's broken machine, to sending a single shoe in a box to a Nordstrom buyer, this episode is a masterclass in resourcefulness, resilience, and relationship-building. If you've ever wondered what it really takes to get into big box stores—or if you just need a reminder that bold moves build big brands—this episode is for you. Sal

Career Sponsorship has become critical to women's advancement to leadership. Today, we are discussing the behaviours and actions the most exceptional Sponsors are taking to ensure more talented women are promoted to leadership.Systemic bias means that men are exposed to opportunities in their careers more readily than their female peers are. Career Sponsors are needed to address that imbalance. Sponsors are influential leaders within an organisation, who believe in the moral and commercial importance of inclusion, equity and diversity of thought. They are proactive advocates of the talented women they sponsor. In this episode I am taking you through 3 of the most effective ways a Career Sponsor can help support, and fast track women through the pipeline - they are necessary catalysts to create change faster.Something Rebecca said today:"A career sponsor actively seeks out opportunities for their sponsee. The award for most press releases and announcements on a single issue must got to National this week. Law and Order was front and centre - announcements about everything from first responders to coward punches. It was an assault of announcements. Now, announcements don't make streets safer. Announcements don't fix problems on their own. This was a targeted campaign to reinforce the idea their tough on crime. That they're on the side of the victim. Why are they doing this? Because it's one of the now minority of issues on which they outpoll Labour - from the last Ipsos survey. So, they've been going health for leather on law and order. Meanwhile, Labour's overtaken the right for the party most trusted to fix the economy. I know for a lot of you listening, this is laughable. They got us into this mess, etc, etc. And I agree with you - I think it's like a protest vote against the incumbent when cost of living is high. Would you actually go and vote for that person tomorrow? Or are you just sending a signal of unhappiness? You never truly know, but National's clearly alive to the fact it's becoming an Achilles' heel. The actual numbers are in range: OCR nearly neutral at 3.25%, inflation at 2.5%. But there's a politically painful time lag between numbers getting into band and voters feeling it in their pockets. Luxon's team have identified this problem. Their short-term solution is to bash the supermarkets. Hard. And repeatedly. It's almost like they've finished with the mongrel mob so now they're taking on the other gangsters - Woolworths. An announcement on "next steps" is already being touted, months out. So, Labour bashes National on cost of living, National will bash the supermarkets. And guess what? Nothing will happen to the prices you pay at the weekly shop.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Series two has begun! The first proper Christmas special and the beginning of the David Tennant years. Warning: This episode features Mark ranting about working at Woolworths. Apologies to anyone who worked there.
Justin Fris and Jack McGinn discuss Rio Tinto's $3.1bn Western Range iron ore mine and a commodity pricing agency's bold change to its reporting metrics. Plus: State govt buys Frasers Suites for $105m; Mineral Resources opens Onslow Iron's glitzy Pilbara FIFO camp; Woolworths to build $28m supermarket in East Victoria Park.
The Government's issued a fresh warning to the major supermarket chains. Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis has written a letter to Woolworths, and Foodstuffs' North Island and South Island arms, outlining her expectations. She says she's hearing of supermarkets charging more than the advertised price, and having specials and multi-buy deals that don't actually offer savings. Willis told Mike Hosking that's not good enough. She says supermarkets have publicly said again and again that they do everything they can to be good providers of service, but this doesn't look like that. Do you have a tendency to say YES - or saying nothing at all - when really, you want to say NO? Today I am exploring 6 different scenarios where you might need to say 'No!' more often in your career!I am sharing some powerful reframes so that you can say 'no', without having to say 'no' at all!We are talking too about how saying 'no' can result in huge benefits to you, as well as greater ROI for your organisation! Pushing back, and saying 'no', has never been easier! I'll see you inside!Something I said today:"Saying 'No' can be presented in lots of different ways to make it more palatable. For example, you can say, "Look, I don't agree with this" or 'I think we need to take a step back and discuss this more" or "I feel like this is the wrong decision to take, can we look at this again? Working on reframes like this can make it extremely easy to push back and say 'no'." So productively in sync and inseparable are Serong and Jackson, they're starting to morph into one Calukeb Jacksong entity! Time to Restump Podcast the dispatching of the Dons. A combined 56 possessions, 48 hitouts, 17 clearances, 18 score involvements, over 1,000 metres gained and 5 goals neat from Serong and Jackson! Coles and Woolworths are screaming, “What about that duopoly!” Let's just get all the prefacing out of the way early. Yes, it was Essendon, yes, we were expected to win comfortably, yes, they're battling and yes, Vigo Visantini was their sole ruck on debut. With that been said and now subconsciously considered, Thursday was a job satisfactorily and entertainingly done. Despite the first quarter midfield dominance of the Dons, the result really was never in doubt. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Are we better than that display? Maybe in patches and on occasions, but taking into account the last 5 weeks of form, we're probably a 4th to 9th type of team at the moment. Did our rare as hens teeth accurate kicking make us appear more overall dominant than we truly were? The second and third quarters we piled on 10 goals 1 to the Bomber's 4 goals 6. On paper, at least, they're the same opportunities.Anyway, focusing on the underlying possible realities isn't necessarily fun, so let's talk about Luke Jackson instead. Remember back to those days when there were those who were angry at the club for spending up on what Jackson cost us, suggesting he was overrated? Those crazy dazey times! His ruckwork was one thing, but his fourth midfielder traits somehow astonishingly continue to increase. And not enough fuss has been made about his 3 goals! They weren't gimmes or marks in the goal square, they were from long range and or under pressure on the run.And the other member of Calukeb Jacksong, did he have a day out or what? When Caleb Serong, not exactly known for his accuracy, hit that goal from the boundary… it was put the glasses down, this game is done. Elsewhere, Corey Wagner's stock continues to rise after another super polished performance, clamping down on Zac Merret. He attended a career high 17 of the 29 centre bounces.Jordie Clark must be an All-Australian lock and Luke Ryan was back to his mopping up everything best. On top of kicking goals and clunking grabs, Josh Treacy hunts opponents down. He literally corals, confuses and catches them. Shai Bolton has simply made us a much better team and Freddy could have had a big day out.Where are we all on Nat Fyfe? It is just his first true game back, but he attended just 5 centre bounces and had little to no impact up forward. Jojo stands by his hard call but the Chief is keeping the faith and extending the hand of opportunity. There is something about September that tells me we'll be thankful for a Fyfe! The Darcy conversation will only escalate. Have we done the right by him, throwing him to the Max Gawn and Toby Nankervis type wolves and then resting him against a debutant? Is there more to the resting story than we're being told? We kneed to know!We ticked the box that needed ticking, we made another 4-point deposit in the September action bank and we got some entertainment along the way. Let's rinse and repeat! The game does seem like it was long ago, but it was too entertaining not to dig conversationally deeper. So, bring your language luggage, grab your purple talking twigs and join us in the conversing corner as we all bang on about the banishment of the Bombers.Send us a textSupport the show
In this nostalgic and meandering episode of Spellbreakers, host Matt Trump reflects on the cultural decay and changing landscape of America. From the vanishing charm of classic diners and barbershops to the insidification of fast-food kiosks and real estate overdevelopment in Flagstaff and Boulder, Matt muses on the loss of authenticity in modern life. He shares personal stories from Arizona to Iowa to Austin and beyond, weaving in thoughts on forest access, the right to roam, nuclear fears, and globalist agendas. Aided by chat interaction and map visuals, the episode becomes a time capsule of longing for simpler times and a freer, more grounded America, topped off with commentary on Demolition Man, dollar stores, and a love letter to Woolworths.
Step into the squeaky blue plastic chairs of yesteryear as this episode of our 90s nostalgia podcast takes you back to the glorious chaos of British school life in the 1990s. From answering the register too early (a social death sentence) to the unspoken rules of the pencil case hierarchy, we're diving into the details that made school in the 90s an unforgettable blend of awkward, hilarious, and occasionally traumatic moments. We reminisce about the horror of forgetting your PE kit, the misery of lost property boxes that smelled like regret, and the quiet panic of mufti day wardrobe decisions. Whether you were the kid with a Woolworths multi-compartment pencil case or someone scribbling with a chewed-up biro, you'll recognise the everyday drama that came with trying to survive the playground and the classroom alike. Remember the reverence for Parker pens? Or the moment a TV trolley wheeled into the room, promising a blessed break from long division? From recorder lessons that sounded like a goose fight to the magical healing powers of green paper towels, we relive the bizarre, brilliant details of 90s school culture with the affection only time can bring. We also celebrate the rituals that shaped us – forging sick notes, jostling for seats on school trip coaches, pretending to understand blurry OHP slides, and typing “5318008” into calculators with absolute glee. These moments didn't just define our school days—they bonded a generation together in a uniquely British, mildly traumatising way. So whether you survived swimming lessons with chlorine-sensitive excuses or found yourself emotionally changed by a particularly stressful Ofsted visit, this episode is your invitation to laugh, cringe, and nod along. The 90s school experience was a world of chaos and camaraderie—and we wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe to never play the recorder again). Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Does your organisation struggle to retain high-potential female talent without knowing why? Today I am looking at 5 key reasons organisations struggle to retain key female talent mid-career. We are discussing:Culture, inclusion and belongingTransparency - this is a biggie!Active sponsorshipLeadership developmentLet's be really honest about the barriers women are facing on a day-to-day basis and start taking measurable action towards creating more enriching careers for women.Something I said today:"Women must be made aware when internal roles are opening up for application. Too often they are not made equally aware of potential opportunities and so can't apply. This has a compound impact: not only do they not even have the opportunity to present themselves as a potential candidate, their exclusion can lead to them doubting the support they have in the organisation which can then also diminish their confidence and sense of belonging further." Heather's disappointed that the Government hasn't followed on after all their talk on reform. They've only gotten rid of 2000 public servants so far - what do we make of all this? Chris Luxon copped some backlash after he started talking about potentially cutting sick leave entitlements from 10 back to 5 days - then had to clarify that that's actually not on the Government's agenda. If you're SUPER strategic, you're always thinking three steps ahead of everyone else which can be extremely useful but NOT if you're losing everyone along the way. How would I define someone who is SUPER Strategic?Your brain will work quickly and be filled with ideas and ways to connect all those different ideasYou'll be solving problems people haven't even thought of yetThe people around you might not see the 'problems' you're outlining as being 'problems' at all You may have difficulty prioritising or communicating your thoughts so that you are understoodBeing SUPER strategic can be frustrating - for you and your team! In this episode I am sharing 5 tips to help SUPER Strategists make the most of their super power whilst still engaging and influencing others as they go!Something I said today:"From Neuro-science we know that people compute information differently, deleting and retaining different pieces of any communication based on their own preferences, experiences and bias. Even if you think your communication is clear, it still might not be understood in the way you intend. And if you want to influence others, you need first to seek understanding and engagement before you persuade." On this week's edition of the Labor Radio Podcast Weekly: From Tucson to Melbourne to Vancouver, workers are rising up—and their stories are being told. We start with Words and Work, where Bookmans employees in Arizona walk off the job, demanding movement at the bargaining table. “If they're not going to make a motion,” one worker says, “we're going to make a motion.” On Working People, student hunger strikers at the University of Oregon connect their campus protest to the starvation crisis in Gaza, calling it not only physical destruction—but cultural erasure. Down under, Stick Together brings us to a pastry factory in Melbourne, where bakery workers making muffins, donuts, and Australia's famous Woolworths mud cakes go on strike for fair pay—and win a seat at the table through collective action. From Roswell Hub, we explore what it means when your workplace relocates—sometimes a blessing, sometimes a life-altering burden—and what unions can do to protect workers when buildings close or operations shift. And on On the Line, we travel back to WWII-era Vancouver, where women known as “conductor-ettes” defied gender roles—and unruly passengers—to keep the streetcars running while the men were at war. A new plan is being touted as a way to fast track shaking up the grocery sector. The New Zealand Initiative is proposing allowing new entrants to enter the market, rather than forcing any break-up of the existing supermarket companies. It outlines the need for fast track plans for rezoning, consenting, overseas investment clearance, and a more neutral stance from the government. Chief Economist Eric Crampton told Mike Hosking a new entrant should get a head start. He says within five years the government would find out whether planning barriers are what's held companies back. Foodstuffs and Woolworths are both members of the New Zealand Initiative. Who said career 'success' is only about climbing the career ladder and going UP? Today I am exploring the metaphor of your career being a 'jungle gym' instead full of rich, lateral experiences. In her book Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg references the metaphor of a 'career jungle gym' which she credits to Forbes' journalist Pattie Sellers. It's the idea that 'success' doesn't have to be a linear path. And you don't even need to know your ultimate destination. In all the years I have been a specialist career coach for women, I have seen that people who diversify their experiences are better off in the long term (certainly if they are chasing a leadership role). In this episode I am exploring some ways to help you determine your own career path so that it feels like you're making good decisions... and are having a lot of fun along the way!Something I said today:"Where the career gym metaphor really excites me is it's based on chasing OPPORTUNITY rather than chasing job titles. This is hugely liberating and can lead to you making some really good decisions for your career."
