Welcome to this classic episode. Classics are our favorite episodes from our back catalogue, published as frequently as possible. These are N of 1 conversations with N of 1 people. This is a replay of Episode 217, originally released in July 2025— one of our most loved classics. Elena Verna is one of Silicon Valley's most respected growth operators, whose career has spanned companies including Lovable, SurveyMonkey, Miro and Dropbox. In conversation with Vidit Agarwal, Elena reflects on growing up in post-Soviet Russia during the collapse of communism, immigrating to the United States at 14 without speaking English, learning the language through SpongeBob, and going from rejected university applicant to one of tech's most influential voices in growth. She shares the story of obsessively chasing a role at SurveyMonkey that changed her life, lessons from legendary CEO Dave Goldberg, why “not respecting roles and responsibilities” became both her superpower and weakness, and how navigating corporate politics shaped her leadership style. The conversation also explores AI-native companies, the future of growth, why experienced operators may carry “historical baggage”, how Lovable operates with extreme velocity, and what separates companies that scale from those that stall. Elena also dives into hiring, creativity, accountability, solo entrepreneurship, and why she believes victim mentality is one of the most dangerous traits in modern work culture. Kia ora. Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand. I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz. Today we lead with news the US-China summit in Beijing is underway and so far, the results have been underwhelming. Xi warned Trump about US support for Taiwan, and a big jet order for Boeing wasn't quite what was expected, causing Boeing's share price to fall today (-3.6%). The travelling CEO's seem to be impressed with China's opportunities, rather than Trump getting China to invest in the US. But it is only day one, so more may come of this visit. In the US data out overnight shows there were 190,600 initial jobless claims last week, less than seasonal factors would have indicated. There are now 1.7 mln people on these benefits, less than a year ago and about the same as two years ago. Given how this is tracking so different to the US household labour force survey, part of the jobless claims easing can be attributed to tougher qualification standards. US retail sales rose marginally in April from March to be +4.5% higher than year ago levels. Higher dollar sales at petrol stations were a key factor. The timing of one-off tax refunds probably played a part too. This is a gain that is higher than the 3.8% US CPI. Business inventories rose as well (the data is for March). Retail inventories did too. But both are up less than the sales gains, so the inventory to sales ratio is improving. In China, banks haven't been lending at the rate expected. New yuan loans by Chinese banks fell by a net -¥10 bln in April, and much less than the expected +¥300 bln, and less than the +¥285 bln in April 2025. This is quite an unexpectedly variation and turn down in momentum, and only the third time on record this has happened. One reason is that there is a shift to corporate bond financing, away from bank financing. In Australia, their competition regulator has prevailed in a case it brough against supermarket giant Coles claiming its discount claims were a sham. This judgement is sure to echo in New Zealand. The ACCC has a parallel case pending judgement against Woolworths. Meanwhile the peak Australian labour union, the ACTU, has amended its claim for a minimum wage rise to +6% before the Fair Work Commission, taking the claimed rate to AU$26.45/hour (NZ$32.25). Obviously, the change is in response to rising inflation. Global container freight rates were up +12% last week to be +14% higher than year-ago levels. Surcharging for fuel is the key reason for the rises although this is also the time the northern hemisphere "peak season surcharges (PSS) start to be applied. Bulk cargo rates shifted higher again last week as well, up +5.4% and are now at levels we had during the pandemic stresses The UST 10yr yield is now just on 4.46%, down -1 bp from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today down -US$12 at US$4678/oz. Silver is down -US$3 at just under US$85/oz. American oil prices are holding up at just over US$101.50/bbl, while the international Brent price is just under US$106/bbl. The Kiwi dollar is down -10 bps from yesterday at this time at 59.2 USc. Against the Aussie we are up +20 bps at 81.9 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged at just under 50.7 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 62.5 which is down -10 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$81,564 and up +2.7% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at just under +/- 2.1%. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz. Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again on Monday.

Meet Ryan Patterson, product manager at Premier Data, a fast-growing sports technology startup that's closing the gap between elite-level analytics and grassroots sport.Ryan's path into sport is anything but linear. From scanning groceries at Woolworths at age 15, to progressively building his university qualifications across three degrees, a Bachelor of Business that evolved into Sport Management, and then a double degree adding Sport Science once he realised data analytics was where his future lay, Ryan has consistently leaned into what excited him rather than following a predetermined plan. Mike's Minute: Look at Australia for the supermarket experience

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

If you are one of those exercised about supermarkets and whether they are scandal merchants, then you must follow the current court case in Australia. It's the second of its type. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is dealing with Woolworths, having previously dealt with Coles. The Coles' case decision is reserved as they wait for this week's Woolworths case. The charge, basically, is they up the price of something before they cut the price and claim it's on sale. The lawyers called it a "subtle magic". They are using a basket of goods that involves Tim Tams. The reason I mention this, and you should follow it, is for the simple fact that Australia is not short of supermarkets or supermarket competition. There are the 'Big 3", which is our two plus Aldi, and in total they have ten. The point being, if you asked your average Australian "do they get a good deal and is there enough competition", they would say no. The same way they say 'no' here. Are you ripped off? 'Yes' would be the answer from both sides of the Tasman. And in that is the conundrum. What you feel might well be different to what is real. Especially around money and price are powerful things and often what you want to see is what you will see. Part of it I'm sure is the dynamic nature of supermarkets and the literally thousands of products, and therefore tens of thousands of prices, they deal with every day. Different brands, different sizes, different specials, different deals, one off's vs regular prices, specials vs promotional prices, where in the isle it's placed, what sort of supplier deal is struck, what the cost of transport was, how many you bought etc, etc. It presumably goes on forever. Which is not to say anything other than when it has that many moving parts, telling me it's cheaper to buy baked beans in Sydney or Geneva doesn't explain how this all works. Let's see how the courts work through it and what, if anything, comes from it. But in Australia there's lots of choice and lots of competition. Allegedly there's everything the supermarket critic here could want. And yet they're still in court. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do Late Dinners Really Stall Fat Loss? Plus Tinned Tuna Ranked at Coles, Aldi & Woolies

If your dinner creeps out to 8 or 9pm most nights and your fat loss has stalled, this one is worth 30 minutes of your week. In this episode of The Nutrition Couch, Leanne and Susie unpack why late dinners quietly derail body composition for so many women — and why the fix isn't as simple as just eating earlier. Do late dinners actually stall fat loss? Why pushing your last meal out often triggers a calorie catch-up spiral: over-hunger, reliance on bars and snacks, and a heavier meal than your body actually needed. Susie and Leanne explain how circadian rhythm and insulin sensitivity quietly stack the deck against you, why some women (think CrossFit at 5am, or insulin-resistant clients) genuinely need different approaches, and the simple shift of moving more calories into lunch and the afternoon snack that changes everything. The 12-hour overnight window for gut health Why Susie aims for a minimum 10 hours — ideally 12 — between your last mouthful at night and breakfast the next day, and what happens to next-day hunger regulation when that window gets squeezed. Is the protein pudding trend actually necessary? Pools, Arlo, Rockabees, Muscle Nation. The hosts weigh in on whether you really need another 20g of protein after a dinner that already hit 30–40g, and when a protein pudding genuinely earns its place. Tinned tuna ranked: Coles vs Aldi vs Woolworths vs Sirena vs John West Susie runs the actual tuna percentages inside the tin across every major supermarket brand. The Aldi range that beats tuna triple the price. The Coles home brand that comes in at 80% tuna for $1.10. Why Woolworths home brand falls short. And why tinned red salmon at around $10 might quietly be one of the best-value high-protein lunches going. Product review: Sunny Queen Bacon & Cheese Protein Bites 27g of protein on the front of the pack, a long additive-heavy ingredient list inside, and a 200g "single serve" that raises serious questions. The hosts' verdict on whether this one earns a spot in your trolley. Listener question: How should shift workers eat? Long-time listener Nicole asks for a practical framework around day, afternoon, and night shifts. Susie and Leanne walk through meal timing, the low-fuel snack options that keep you alert without blowing out calories, and why structure beats "eating lighter" every time. For the range of protein, creatine, collagen, and magnesium Leanne and Susie refer to at the close of this episode, head to Designed by Dietitians. Most women trying to lose weight have been told the same thing their whole lives: eat less. But on this episode of The Nutrition Couch, Leanne Ward and Susie Burrell make the case that under-eating may be one of the most common and most overlooked reasons women struggle to lose fat, build muscle, and feel well. If you are tired despite sleeping well, craving sugar and carbs by mid-afternoon, getting sick more than you should, or stuck at the same weight no matter what you do, this episode is for you. Are you under-eating? The signs your metabolism is working against you Leanne and Susie walk through the most common clinical signs of chronic under-fuelling: persistent fatigue, intense cravings, poor gym performance, frequent illness, and hormonal disruptions including irregular or missing periods. They explain why women who train hard, eat clean, and keep portions small are often the most at risk, and why not feeling hungry is not a sign you are doing well. They also break down the restrict-crave-overeat cycle and why eating more, not less, is often the fastest path to the body composition results their clients are actually after. Sausages: what the label is actually telling you Australians eat a lot of sausages, but the nutritional quality varies dramatically across supermarket brands. Susie compares Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi options and reveals exactly what to check on the label, including the three specific additive numbers (250, 251, 252) that indicate nitrates, what total fat and saturated fat thresholds to look for, and why butcher sausages are usually not the healthier choice most people assume. Product review: Peter's Frosty Fruits 50% Less Sugar Leanne tried these on holiday in Noosa and the kids loved them. She breaks down the ingredient list, the sugar comparison versus the originals, and why these are one of the better supermarket ice block options, particularly when you catch them half price. How to choose the right collagen supplement Not all collagen works, and a lot of what is being sold is poorly formulated. Leanne shares five evidence-based criteria for choosing a collagen supplement that actually delivers results: why vegan collagen is ineffective, what hydrolysed collagen peptides means and why it matters, which patented strains have clinical research behind them, how vitamin C improves collagen absorption, and why daily dose consistency matters far more than a large serve size. If you are currently spending money on collagen and not seeing results, this segment will tell you exactly why.
