My guest on this episode of the Soft Skills for Leaders podcast is Serena Low, an introvert coach who helps professional women find their inner strengths in their quiet nature. As an introvert, it can be difficult to navigate a world that values extroverted qualities such as being outgoing and talkative. From a young age, introverts are often given the label of "quiet achievers" who need to participate more in class. However, this label is not always accurate or fair. Introverts tend to process information internally before sharing their thoughts with others. This means that they may not speak up as frequently in group settings, but when they do contribute, it is often well thought out and insightful. It's important for peers to recognize and appreciate these contributions rather than assume that participation equates to understanding or intelligence. Make sure you tune in to the episode to learn more about Serena and how she helps women unleash their inner strengths. Talking Points Introverts often face challenges in navigating social situations that are designed for extroverted personalities, and introverts are often misunderstood. The labels and stereotypes often come from childhood, often contradicting messages such as being rewarded for being quiet, yet told to speak up. Group settings can be particularly daunting as the pressure to participate is high, and introverted individuals may feel judged or misunderstood by others in the group. How does an introvert find a way to contribute in an authentic and meaningful way to demonstrate their leadership? Introverts tend to think deeply about issues before expressing their thoughts on them, which leads to well-considered opinions. Which can result in others choosing to listen as the introvert shares wise thoughts. Why 'faking extroversion' is detrimental and causes personal conflict. What happens when the mask comes off? Behaving in this way is exhausting and can cause stress. How introverts choose to use their energy. Solitary activities are usually enjoyable! Finding a healthy equilibrium to recharge and manage limits. Getting older and being more comfortable in our own skin and less time worrying about other people's perception of us. Qualities that set introverts apart can include - calmness compassion, empathy, deep listening, holding space and helping others feel safe. How are we treating the quieter members of the team? As we strive for more inclusive workplaces, leaders find themselves tasked with the challenge of ensuring that everyone can thrive in their work environment. Leaders need to find ways to give each person the opportunity to contribute to the shared goals and appreciated each individual the way they are. Examples of leaders who create an ideal environment for all communication styles. How do we let others know our preferred style? Our identity is so much more than our style. Being quiet is one element. Don't let labels define you. How the introverted business owner learns to communicate their value and be successful at sales and marketing. This month marks eight years of being in business. During that time, my brand and service offerings have evolved. When I began my journey into podcasting in early 2020, I kept the title and topics of conversations quite broad. With 76 episodes of the Business Chat Podcast under my belt, on reflection, I have most enjoyed the conversations related to soft skills. The podcast has a brand new look, and here is a super short solo episode about the changes. Welcome to Soft Skills for Leaders, the podcast about the less tangible yet essential skills we need to get ahead in life and at work. Each episode, I will bring you a conversation with an expert on a topic relating to how we create, connect, collaborate, and communicate. Decision-making is a crucial skill to be an effective leader. Decisions that are well-crafted help organisations move towards goals and best outcomes. In this episode of the Business Chat Podcast, I welcome back my first podcast guest, Rob Hartnett. He is the Vice President of Growth for APAC for NeuroLeadership Institute. Rob talks about what affects decision-making and how to make efficient and effective decisions. We have to remember that decision-making is dependent on our habits, beliefs, opinions, and experiences. These aspects unintentionally create our biases, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing. In Rob's discussion of the SEEDS Model, he talks about the five major groups of biases that affect how we form decisions. Knowing our biases makes us mindful of our thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and actions, moreover, we become intentional with the results we want. An effective leader knows how to evaluate situations and assess whether our bias is serving us or hindering us from reaching the best decision for our organisations. Our love for learning is strengthened when we're in environments that acknowledge and nurture this passion. However, most of our learning institutions focus on traditional approaches that may no longer be relevant, and we need to work towards re-imagining learning at work. In this episode of the Business Chat Podcast, I have a lovely conversation with Steph Clarke. She helps organisations deal with hard conversations regarding learning and development. Before the pandemic, people's way of learning was too traditional, classroom-based, and too instructor-led. Now, organisations are employing a more holistic approach to help their employees learn. The negotiation process depends on what needs to be achieved. The individuals involved can either participate in competitive or collaborative negotiation. Both of these utilise non-verbal cues that support the communication style and goal of the conversation. In this episode of the Business Chat podcast, I welcome back the amazing Gary Edwards to carry on with the discussion for non-verbal negotiation. There are lots of factors to consider when negotiating; the environment, tone of voice, physical looks, and mental preparation. But the main thing is having the flexibility and striking balance with negotiation style. How we verbally express our thoughts is equally important as how we gesture our message. When there's an inconsistency between what we say and how we say it, the people we're negotiating with believe the negative, and we don't get the outcome we hope for. Empathy is often misunderstood in the business world, but it is a powerful strategy that develops effective leadership. Empathy begins with having a shared understanding. In this episode of the Business Chat Podcast, I have a fascinating chat with Daniel Murray about leading performance by using empathy. It's no secret that there's a shortage of empathy in business organisations. The main reason behind this is that organisations have become more complex over the years, and what's disappointing is that we don't take the first step towards empathy, we make assumptions and then move on.
