CYBER UNCUT: AI to solve housing troubles, ATO denies security issues, and our favourite data breach tool

In this episode of the Cyber Uncut podcast, David Hollingworth and Daniel Croft have a chat about everything, from the NSW government's new drive to use AI to solve the housing crisis to deepfake takedowns, who may or may not be behind the hacking campaign targeting big-name UK retailers (still!), security issues at the Australian Taxation Office, and the relaunch of HaveIBeenPwned. Hollingworth and Croft start off with positive AI-related news, starting with the Trump administration's decision to enact new laws regarding deepfake and revenge porn, before swivelling to the NSW state government's plan to use AI to help address a housing construction backlog and grow the workforce. Then it's straight into cyber crime, with more twists and turns from the highly disruptive hacking campaign targeting UK retailers. The pair discuss why one chain is leaking money like a sieve as it tries to rebuild, and why another is getting back on its feet. It's a lesson everyone can learn from. Hollingworth and Croft wrap up this section of the podcast with a discussion of the ATO's issues with identity theft following revelations that hackers had compromised some individual accounts and stolen funds. The pair wrap things up with news of one of their favourite research tools – HaveIBeenPwned – launching a V2 of its website, and how useful it is for average consumers and researchers alike. A recent ruling by a Victorian magistrate in Australia has potentially significant implications for the taxation of Bitcoin transactions. During a theft case involving a former police officer, the judge determined that Bitcoin should be treated similarly to Australian dollars, classifying it as property but not subject to capital gains tax. This contrasts with the Australian Taxation Office's long-standing position, which has treated Bitcoin as a capital gains asset since 2014. If this ruling is upheld on appeal, which is not expected until late 2025, it could lead to substantial tax refunds for Bitcoin holders who paid CGT after 2019. The defence team is appealing the ruling that Bitcoin is property at all, arguing it is simply information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When West Australian mining billionaire Chris Ellison was accused of a decade of tax evasion, his lawyers responded by trying to cut a deal with the Australian Taxation Office.  The terms of that deal included an 80 per cent reduction in the penalty payable and an assurance that his conduct wouldn't be referred to police or the corporate watchdog.  The reason that Ellison, managing director of the company Mineral Resources, would push for those terms is obvious. The real question is why the tax office would agree to it.  Today, national correspondent for The Saturday Paper Mike Seccombe, on how the ATO protects the rich.  Socials: Stay in touch with us on Twitter and Instagram Guest: National correspondent for The Saturday Paper Mike Seccombe

Such good stuff!   Irene is the Managing Director of Coaching Alliance Group, an accredited Executive Leadership Coach, Mentor and Facilitator. Her career is amazing. She was the inaugural Chief of Staff at APEC and first Asian woman to be promoted to the Senior Executive Service of the Australian Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office. AND she was the first Asian woman that the Australian Treasury posted overseas diplomatically as the Minister-Counsellor to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.   Here are the topics we covered in the episode: 3:12 Power of emotions & leadership 7:33 New thinking habits 11:52 Bringing cultures together by removing systemic bias/racism 21:44 The effect of emotions and ego Here are the three takeaways: 1.   Let's look at emotions look at comfortable or uncomfortable not good or bad. They can be our “north star” guiding us to act in alignment with our deepest values and to be more resilient. Accept them, allow them and then do something constructive with them. 2.   Having an inclusive mindset is about being curious and move away from the assumption that the way I see the world is the only way to see the world. 3.   One habit to break up the “all about me” and the disconnection from the other. We can look at an issue together, rather than making it personal by blaming judging or defending against the other. This allows alignment.    More About Irene:  Irene coaches women at all stages of their journey to break free from societal biases to set their own terms and to thrive as powerful and authentic leaders on their own terms. - I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I recorded this episode, the Coodjinburra People of the Bundjalung Nation, and the land on which you're listening to it. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, of those lands. I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners. Thank you for sharing this space with me. -As a business owner, keeping accurate and up to date records of your transactions is not only a legal requirement but also crucial for the success and growth of your business. So in this episode, I'm sharing some essential record-keeping responsibilities that every business owner should be aware of and why establishing good record-keeping habits is essential.Understanding Record Keeping ObligationsIn Australia, you are legally obligated to keep records of all your transactions related to tax and superannuation matters. This includes revenue and expense records such as invoices, bills, and receipts. You must also maintain documents that outline decisions, choices, estimates, determinations, or calculations made for your business's tax and superannuation affairs. In short, every transaction and relevant documentation must be recorded and retained.Maintaining accurate and complete records is not just about meeting your legal obligations; it also has a range of benefits for your business. Effective record-keeping allows you to monitor the health of your business by keeping track of your income and expenses and helps you comply with any regulatory requirements. Keeping accurate records will also keep you well-prepared for tax time and ATO audits, should they come knocking. Trust me, The Australian Taxation Office has robust data-matching capabilities and conducts regular audits to ensure compliance. Use Accounting SoftwareI highly recommend using Xero as your accounting software to streamline your record-keeping process. This software allows you to link your business bank account, ensuring all transactions are automatically recorded. On the topic of bank accounts, make sure you separate your business and personal expenses to simplify your financial management and also protect your privacy.Have Support Documentation for Each TransactionWhile the bank feed in your accounting software provides a great overview of your transactions, it is essential to support each entry with relevant documentation. For sales, provide invoices sent to clients or data from underlying sales systems. For expenses, keep receipts and tax invoices from suppliers. Remember, to claim GST on expenses, you need to have a tax invoice from the supplier.Leverage TechnologyTake advantage of innovative applications like Hubdoc or Dext to streamline your record keeping. These tools allow you to capture and store documents electronically, providing a centralised location for all your records. They also extract relevant data, facilitating smooth bookkeeping into your accounting software.Organise Your DocumentationEstablish a systematic approach to document storage using cloud-based platforms such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. Create folders for different areas of your business, such as finance, HR, legal, and insurance. Within each folder, organise documents by financial year or relevant categories. This structured approach ensures easy retrieval of information when you need it.By adopting good record-keeping practices, you not only ensure compliance with regulatory requirements but you'll also gain a clear understanding of your business's financial health. So stay organised, follow the rules, and keep proof of your compliance. These small steps will protect you from potential penalties, make financial management more efficient, and contribute to a good night sleep every

Deciding how to use a dwelling over the new year period and beyond may have tax implications down the road. In this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, host Grace Ormsby speaks with Australian Taxation Office assistant commissioner Robert Thomson to shed some light on the tax obligations that property owners need to know about to ensure their investment strategy is sound. The holidays are a time to relax and unwind, but for property investors, figuring out how to use that time productively may lead some to consider leveraging their assets on the short-term market. According to Mr Thomson, investors should ensure they understand the difference between a holiday home and a rental property from a tax perspective when calculating the benefit of making that move. The duo also discuss how the government agency is using data matching to ensure that investors – and all Australians – are getting their returns right, and share helpful resources, such as the ATO's investor toolkit, to help out at tax time. -I regularly come up against a lot of confusion around what expenses should and shouldn't be put through a business. Today, I want to shed some light on this topic so you can head into the holiday season with clarity and set yourself up for a successful year to come. At the core of running a successful business is understanding your finances, and that means knowing how to handle expenses. Business expenses are costs incurred in the operation of your business. They play a crucial role in determining your business's financial health and you may be eligible for tax deductions on certain expenses. However, it's not a free-for-all. There are rules governing what can be considered a legitimate business expense. Ask yourself, if the ATO were to audit your business, would all your expenses hold up as business-related? For instance, buying a dress for a photoshoot makes sense as a business expense, but claiming ten dresses over two months for the same photoshoot? Not so much. The Australian Taxation Office has laid out three golden rules for work-related expense deductibility, and I take you through each one so that you can get clear on what are considered legitimate business expenses. These include things like everyday operating costs, training, product purchases and travel expenses. Now, it's tempting to get a little creative when it comes to claiming expenses. It may seem harmless to claim that daily coffee run or a couple of team golf days, however the ATO's guidelines are there for a reason, and you want to do your best to avoid getting into any sticky tax-related situations. I dive into the types of expenses that won't pass as tax-deductible, and clarify some areas that can be confusing or tricky to navigate. When in doubt, consult your tax accountant - this will help ensure your business stays financially healthy and in the clear come audit or tax time. LINKS:Want to be a guest on this podcast? It's that time of year, and as we at Straight Up Bookkeeping deep dive into completing business and instalment activity statements for the quarter, I'm reminded that the term activity statement can baffle a lot of people. So today, I'm bringing you a short and sharp explainer episode on what activity statements are, what they include, when they are due and how to lodge them. Used by the Australian Taxation Office to report various tax obligations, an activity statement details your business activity for the period in question and declares the amount of tax you owe (or any refunds that the ATO owes you). If you are a small business owner, it's important that you have a good understanding of what your specific obligations are and how to complete these statements correctly. This will help you to avoid penalties and ensure that you are meeting your tax obligations.I explain the two types of activity statements you should know about:Business activity statement (BAS)Instalment activity statement (IAS) There are two methods for submitting BAS and IAS statements and paying tax. I explain what they are and how the method you use will depend on factors specific to your business. I take you through the different components that determine what your obligations will be, such as:An individual's or company's GST registration statusSole trader PAYG withholding obligationsYearly turnoverThe ATO strongly encourages taxpayers to lodge their activity statement on time, even if payment is not immediately possible. Lodging on time not only provides clarity regarding your position with the ATO but also demonstrates your awareness and intent to meet your obligations. Failing to lodge on time may lead to penalties, adding an extra motivator to comply.I hope you find some valuable insights from this episode so that when you next have an activity statement in front of you, you'll have much more clarity and confidence to complete it. If you're in the middle of managing your activity statements right now, good luck! Inclusivity goes straight to the heart of our deepest human values: that of belonging and validation and corporate leaders have a responsibility to ensure those values are met for each individual team player. Inclusivity is about leveraging the diversity of a group whether that be diversity of background, gender, race, experience, expertise, culture and cognitive experience. Research has repeatedly shown that groups with greater diversity, inclusivity, and a culture of psychological safety are more effective and collaborative and ultimately produce more robust decision making. In this episode, Angela and I explore:Angela's experience of inclusivity in action...Ideas on how our own biases skew our thinking...Practical tips on how to involve everyone in a team in the discussion and to feel as if they belong...The value of both cognitive diversity as well as a culture of healthy challenge...And the importance of creating psychological safety in a group, allowing members to share without repercussion... Angela says:"Inclusivity takes effort and deliberate mindfulness to catch yourself in those moments to pause and think about how to integrate each other. Series 11 Episode 29 Hi and welcome, this is Cory… During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, many of us were working from home. For some that left a little to be desired, but for others it was more than just a nice change. I can speak from personal experience pre-pandemic working from home. It's great to literally roll out of bed and get to work. Not have to wear a tie… I never did that anyway. But while it was my preferred way to work, there was a downside. I found myself in a situation where I had to leave home to get away from work. Often I would drop in to work's office to get away from the job which seems really weird. But it worked for me. Just recently the Australian Taxation Office announced some changes to what Aussies can claim should they find themselves working from home. The fixed rate in which employees are able to claim to cover general working from home has increased from 52 to 67 cents per hour. The change also means you no longer need a dedicated home office to claim. Aussies are able to claim a number of work related expenses from their taxable income. They can be claimed precisely by saving receipts to claim at tax time, or the fixed rate of 67 cents per hour. According to the tax department, the hourly increase reflects the costs of things like energy, phone and internet. https://www.instagram.com/p/Co27LcTBLov/ https://www.ato.gov.au/Media-centre/Media-releases/ATO-announces-changes-to-working-from-home-deductions/ https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Deductions-you-can-claim/Working-from-home-expenses/?=Redirected_URL Follow and turn notifications on so you can be alerted when new episodes are released.
