What a cool company! I recently spoke with Mitch Wainer, Co-Founder and CMO at Welcome Homes. Prior to Welcome Homes, Mitch was CMO at Clubhouse (renamed to Shortcut, a Series B SaaS startup), CMO and Co-Founder at DigitalOcean, and he's also a Techstars alum. Welcome Homes was founded in 2020, has 49 people, and is based out of New York. They've raised Seed funding ($5.4M). Order your dream home, online! Build the home you want, where you want for a guaranteed, all-in price. Right now it's available in the NY metro area, with more cities coming soon. Here's what we hit on: Mitch's 2022 Marketing Plan - budget, channels, content and resources; Online AND offline channels; Paid is faster, sure, but here's why you need to invest in organic from Day 1 (HINT: it takes time, the content compounds, and your audience grows); Why it's important to have reps and sets on a daily basis; The content we're leaning into (HINT: create value without asking for anything); The last 1-2 really good, creative marketing ideas we've come up with (HINT: brand partnerships and the broker/agent channel. One big creative idea is great but it's more important to do reps and sets); Why we're treating home buyers (B2C) as B2B; Mitch's goals for 2022. “We get a tremendous amount of traffic to our website every month from people who are just searching for different ways to do things, learning different ways to code. It might not even be on our infrastructure, but we provide that content,” says Carly Brantz, Chief Marketing Officer at Digital Ocean. This is just one of many ways that Digital Ocean, which helps developers easily build, test, manage, and scale applications of any size on a complete cloud platform, Gives First to its customers, and even to people who aren't its customers (but might one day be). Because when you give people what they need now, then when they do need your product, even if it's a year or two from now, they'll think of you. This could be just good marketing strategy, but for Carly — and for Digital Ocean's founding team, Ben Uretsky, Moisey Uretsky, and Mitch Wainer, it's more than that. It's about love. David remembers when Digital Ocean was in the Techstars Boulder Accelerator, back in 2021: “Moisey and Ben and Mitch and everybody in the accelerator said love. They talked about love being the differentiator. We love our customers. We want them to love our product. They got this funny look from a lot of mentors and a lot of people like, ‘Hey, that's not really a way you can build the company.'” But for Digital Ocean, love turned out to be a winning strategy. Carly confirms that love is still a big differentiator for Digital Ocean: “Really everything that we do, we always say that it starts with community and ends with love.”Listen for more about how community, content, and love can be a hugely successful marketing strategy — and why it's never too early or too late to join Pledge 1%.Techstars personnel and/or guests who speak in this podcast express their own opinions, and not the opinion of either Techstars or any company discussed in this podcast. This week on Founders Talk, Adam is joined by Mitch Wainer, previously CMO at DigitalOcean and a member of the founding team. They talk about his journey as an entrepreneur and marketer, the early days at DigitalOcean, and everything that went into disrupting the cloud with blazing fast SSDs. Back in March (2021), DigitalOcean started trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) — this obviously earned Mitch and many others a very large payday. They also talk about the work Mitch is doing now with Welcome and Sponsored.

Give us a little bit of your background, and give us a little bit of the story of DigitalOcean - it’s this success story that not that many people know about. Topic 2 - “the cloud” is a funny thing in that it can be focus on IT replacement, shadow IT, developers, platforms, etc. - but DigitalOcean has always been focused on developers. What does that really mean? Topic 3 - A lot of cloud providers are chasing really long lists of “features” or “services”, but the DigitalOcean list is much shorter. Does that tell us more about developers preferring simplicity over features, or does it give us a sense of how ready developers are to use embedded services vs. the DIY mentality? Topic 4 - Recently you announced a block storage offering. Give us some insight into the service/technology, and background on why it’s being announced now - it would seem like compute + storage was needed on Day 1. Topic 5 - The Big 3 (AWS, Azure, Google) tend to get the bulk of the media headlines for cloud. Tell us something about your customer base that would surprise us about how developers use DigitalOcean instead of those bigger offerings Topic 5 - DigitalOcean is a Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) backed company.
