In the early 1980s baseball films were rare with the most notable being the 1976 comedy The Bad News Bears. However Barry Levinson's 1984 Oscar nominated flick sparked a resurgence leading to over 18 baseball themed films in the next decade. On the surface it appears as a traditional sports biopic, but it reveals deeper, almost artistic layers upon closer examination. It trancends mere athletic drama to become a quenissentially American fable and a crowd-pleasing fairytale. The story follows Roy Hobbs, a gifted baseball player whose career is tragically derailed. Years later reappears and an aging outfielder for the fictional New York Knights. Armed with his mystical bat, “Wonderboy”. As Hobbs propels the underdog team towards victory, he confront his past and battles and formadible challenges, embodying the drama and spirit of America's beloved game in a narrative of redemption and myth. So grab some peanuts and cracker jack to snack on as Tim Williams and guest c0-hosts, Nicholas Pepin and Ben Carpenter discuss “The Natural” from 1984 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: Although big league baseball players at the turn of the 20th century sported long hair, handlebar mustaches, and pork chop side burns, it had changed by the time of this story. The strict edict of the day from the Commissioner of Baseball required a player to possess a clean shaven countenance. This continued up to the early 1970s and included everyone; even the Black and Latin American prospects were compelled to comply, and yet, Manager Pop Fisher and coach Red Blow both sport thick walrus mustaches. Glenn Close's initial appearance at the ballpark was carefully planned to give her the appearance of a guardian angel. They waited until a clear day, when the setting sun would be just at the right spot in the background to shine through her translucent hat, making it appear as a halo around her head. 2023 was a challenging year for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing, even though more capital continues to flow into ESG-reporting companies. In 2024, as inflation cools, consumers are expected to continue migrating to sustainable products and services, fueling higher returns for ESG-aligned stocks. Explore the first steps you can take to begin with Ben Vivari, cofounder of Till Investors, which helps investors evaluate and invest in green and socially responsible funds. Ben contributed an article to Earth911, published today, How to Invest for a Healthy Planet, a valuable introduction to ESG investing that looks at how you, the individual investor, think about risk. He identified three "fighting" styles, Avoiding, Rewarding, and Engaging companies based on their ESG disclosures.Ben shares the news and research sources ESG investors should know and use when making decisions. Your choices as an investor to choose responsibility for the future in addition to profits make a difference — learn about your potential power and exercise it. The pace of renewable energy investments has gained momentum over the past decade. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Investment 2023 report, $2.8 trillion will be invested this year in energy, including fossil fuels, with almost 61% dedicated to clean energy. Meet investor Ben Wolkon, a founding partner at MUUS Climate Partners. The firm invests to accelerate renewable energy adoption and to create clean technologies. Now that renewables have crossed the chasm and entered the scale-up phase, we wanted to get a read on how to make more progress faster because the nation is still not on track to cut emissions by 50% before 2030.The IEA reports that for each $1 spent on fossil fuel development, $1.7 is invested in clean energy. Only Five years ago, the ratio was 1:1. That's real progress, and most of that investment flows into new companies. At the same time, oil companies are not turning their recent record profits into investments in renewables. Instead, they are developing more wells and paying dividends rather than investing in low-carbon and renewable energy. That leaves room for many upstarts, including MUUS Climate's portfolio companies, our previous guest, Nth Cycle, as well as Harvest Thermal, BrightNight, and Cache Energy, among others. You can learn more about MUUS Climate Partners at https://www.muusclimate.com/

In the defamation trial of the century, Australia's most-decorated living soldier is seeking to defend his reputation against reports in three newspapers that he says falsely accuse him of being a war criminal. His lawyers argue Roberts-Smith has been unfairly targeted by envious comrades and assisted by credulous journalists. The newspapers' lawyers say their reporting is true, and that Roberts-Smith broke the ‘moral and legal rules of military engagement', something he denies outright. But who is Ben Roberts-Smith, and how did he earn the military's highest honour, the Victoria Cross?
