Meeting summary for Dana Claire talking about fulfillment (06/18/2024)Quick recapThe team discussed the challenges and strategies of book printing, importing, and marketing, with a focus on crowdfunding campaigns and special editions. They also explored the importance of clear communication with manufacturers, the benefits of pre-production samples, and the potential of Kickstarter for book launches. Lastly, they discussed the different paper types and weights, the services offered by Dana's company, and the need for accurate project details to ensure successful campaigns.Next steps• Dana to provide quotes for special edition printing based on book specifications like page count, size, etc.• Authors to book a call with Dana on theinfluence.com for Kickstarter campaign management or special edition printing services.• Authors to consider getting pre-production samples from Dana's team to review before full production run.• Authors to provide separate files for different printing elements like foil, spot UV, etc. to the printer.• Authors to communicate clearly with the printer regarding paper weight (GSM or pounds), printing techniques, and other specifications.• Authors to explore options like split shipping, different cover variants, and inserts for added exclusivity.• Authors to educate themselves on printing terminology and best practices using resources like Russell's article "How to Print Books for Fun and Profit".• Authors to consider long-term sales strategies for special editions beyond just Kickstarter, such as direct sales, subscriptions, or Amazon FBA.SummaryNavigating Crowdfunding and Book Marketing ChallengesRussell introduced Dana Claire, founder of The Influence, a company that helps authors with marketing, importing, and Kickstarter campaigns. Dana shared her experience navigating the ever-changing landscape of crowdfunding campaigns and the importance of her company's advisory role. The team discussed the challenges of book printing, importing, and shipping, including factory relationships, quality control, and communication issues with foreign printers. They explored cost-saving strategies like gang printing and binding for bulk orders. Dana outlined her company's project management approach, guiding clients through campaign planning, design, and launch without handling fulfillment or advertising. Russell suggested options for simpler campaigns, such as special editions or relaunches, to appeal to existing audiences.Promotional Items, Shipping, and Special EditionsDana shared her extensive experience in promotional items, custom designs, and manufacturing processes, highlighting her plans to launch a new website with about 20 unique, inexpensive items. Russell discussed the challenges and potential solutions for shipping large quantities of plushes, while Monica emphasized the need to develop a strategy for selling special editions, beyond just Kickstarter. Dana pointed out the increasing trend of publishing houses releasing special editions, indicating a potential opportunity for self-publishing authors to follow suit.Exploiting Book Cover Variations for Kickstarter SuccessDana and Russell discussed the benefits of using different covers for the same book on Kickstarter and other platforms, emphasizing the potential for increased sales and exclusivity. They highlighted the strategy of printing a standard interior and utilizing change fees for various cover options, such as different dust jackets or hardcovers, to cater to different markets. They also discussed the option of inserting custom illustrations or signed pages into Kickstarter campaigns for added exclusivity. They shared personal experiences and examples from successful campaigns, underscoring the effectiveness of these methods.Enhancing Communication With Chinese ManufacturersMonica, Dana, and Russell discussed the importance of clear communication, particularly when working with manufacturers in China. Dana emphasized the need to provide detailed instructions and specifications, and to confirm details repeatedly to avoid misunderstandings. She also highlighted the significance of understanding the nuances of paper units, such as GSM and Pounds, to avoid errors in production. Russell suggested carrying a paper thickness sample as a reference when communicating with manufacturers. Lastly, the team touched upon the value of pre-production samples to avoid any unforeseen errors or misunderstandings.Pre-Production Samples and Printing TechniquesDana explained the process and advantages of ordering a pre-production sample for book printing, emphasizing that it could save significant costs in the long run. She also clarified the differences between spot gloss and foil, noting that the latter cannot have shading or gradients. Russell shared his practice of sending detailed files to printers for specific effects. Monica suggested working with designers to understand the technical language and specifications required by printers. The team also clarified that they offer campaign management services but do not handle audio production.Kickstarter Campaign Strategy for Book SeriesRussell sought advice from Dana on the best approach to a Kickstarter campaign for the fifth book in a series. Dana suggested keeping the campaign simple with creative rewards, such as naming a character after a backer or having a virtual Zoom party. Russell proposed offering ebooks and print books of the series, with additional rewards for higher tiers. Dana reassured him about flexibility in ordering and fulfillment, suggesting that they could adjust the quantity based on demand. The team also discussed the long-term planning for future campaigns, with Dana mentioning a friend's successful strategy of setting stretch goals for add-ons.Book Printing Best Practices DiscussedDana, Russell, and Monica discussed the best practices for book printing, focusing on the paper quality and thickness. Dana suggested a 80 lb paper for most books, including special editions, as it strikes a good balance between quality and thickness. However, for more artistic or custom illustrations, a 100 lb paper might be necessary. Children's books, on the other hand, might require thicker paper due to their intended use. Dana also clarified that clients should always provide accurate details about their book, such as page count and size, to ensure an accurate quote.Clarifying Printing Services and Special EditionsRussell asked Dana for clarification on the services her company offers for those who don't require design services but need help with overseas printing. Dana explained that her company has three tiers of service: special editions, production, and campaign management. She also mentioned that they could assist with split shipping, a service that has become increasingly popular. The group further discussed the concept of "special editions," with Russell and Dana emphasizing that these editions should offer something unique to the reader, such as a signed copy. They also touched on the potential of Kickstarter for book launches, with Russell cautioning that not all books need a massive, special campaign.Book Printing, Paper Types, and MeasurementsRussell, Monica, and Dana discussed various aspects of book printing, focusing on paper types and weights. They clarified that GSM and pounds are two different measurements for paper thickness. Dana advised that to understand the measurements, it's best to obtain samples from different companies. Monica suggested that interested parties should book a call with Dana for a discussion on their project, be it a Kickstarter campaign or a special edition. Dana emphasized that inquiries about Kickstarter should go through her, while special edition inquiries should go directly to her. The team also mentioned a useful article on printing books for fun and profit that Russell had shared. This is a public episode. Rachel and Mat reflect with Thorn on the current sociopolitical climate, the danger of despair, and the urgent need for action rooted in compassion. We talk sigils, spellcraft, and the sacred duty of showing up—even when it's uncomfortable. If you love a good campus novel for fall, you'll love today's conversation between Anne and academic dean Karen Gold. Karen works at the oldest independent boarding school in the country, where she teaches a course on campus novels. That's not all Karen reads, though: she's especially fond of novels that span generations and highlight both the mundanity and the messiness of the human experience. But Karen's real dilemma today isn't finding the titles she'll want to read next. What she's really grappling with is a format struggle. She's always been committed to print books, but then she got an iPad, and then a Kindle, and she started to enjoy reading on a screen. These days Karen defaults to the ease of e-reading, despite having shelves full of physical books that she really does want to read. She's not sure what to do about this readerly conundrum, and she and Anne talk strategies and possible solutions today. We all know that Amazon and other print-on-demand companies give authors an amazing opportunity to get our books out into the world without having to stock and ship our own books. But you may not have known about the opportunities that exist for custom-printing your own books. This is an area I'm exploring myself with at least one current project and possibly future ones for both me and my clients. That's why I'm excited to bring you this conversation with Jennifer Zahourek. Jennifer Zahourek is a highly experienced Pediatric & Adult Emergency and Trauma Registered Nurse who is now the Owner and Founder of RekMed. Before Jennifer became a nurse, she had a crippling fear of blood, struggled with dyslexia, and was told by her nursing instructor that she most likely would never pass the NCLEX—the exam you must pass to become a nurse in the US and Canada. Jennifer then became a travel nurse for most of her nursing career that allowed her the opportunity to work in over ten different Emergency Departments across the country. Jenn found her niche in Level One Trauma Centers, Stroke & Stemi Centers where she grew her experience and education. As a full-time ER nurse, Jennifer started working on a business to help her fellow nursing community learn to lessen the struggles that she had in school. Now, Jennifer sits as the CEO of RekMed that has helped nursing students across the world. As a result, Jennifer and her company publish print products, and she has developed quite a detailed system for publishing, printing, distributing, and fulfilling these products. You will learn all about her systems and background for creating your own print products. I want to give a special shout-out to John Stange, author of many books and the host of several podcasts, including the Platform Launchers show. TB is really nervous to publish The Proposal, more than normal, if you can believe it. In health news, TB finally went for a massage, after stopping them in 2020, when everything shut down. A back spasm, though, had her whimpering, so now she's getting massages again. In co-writing news, TB keeps unintentionally calling the ranch book the raunchy book. Finally, TB has to wear a tutu, and it's all Clare's fault! Clare, if everything has gone according to plan, is currently in Whitstable, going for long walks, writing lots of words, and chanting how much she loves the charming seaside town. To prepare for her writing retreat, she's been researching and plotting her next book. In major movie news, Clare's extra role in the docudrama has been beefed up, and she's now a character with an actual name. They crash on to the topic: print books. Recently, Clare noticed on Amazon that out of the top twenty sapphic books, a quarter of them didn't have paperback editions. She offers some stats that shuts down TB's brain, but you should pay attention to what Clare has to say, because ignoring print books is not the best author business practice. Clare walks you through the process of getting your books in print. If you haven't done print yet, it's time to make a change. Are your books in print? Head over to www.lesbianswhowrite.com, and leave a comment on the episode. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. Next week they'll be back with more sparkly conversation. What is more beautiful on Earth than the smell and the touch of a new book? This is the classic argument of every book-addicted person that cannot stand those modern readers with their e-books. Though, e-books do have a lot of advantages! I'll name ten in the episode and explain why in many situations the physical book is so much more unpractical. It's a Time of Change, and we're all getting a head start for 2017, (excuse the pun, but I am shaving my head!) But first, here's what we have planned for you. In 2017 we are republishing Aingeal Rose's books "A Time of Change", "The Nature of Reality", and my own book "The Reincarnation of Columbus". Second, over the last few years, we have conducted over 100 Akashic Records sessions. Well, each of those 100 Akashic Records sessions is becoming a print book! We will publish all 100 Print Books in 2017 and each one will also be a Kindle book! The 100-book series is entitled "Answers From The Akashic Records". Look for all 100 volumes in the "Answers From The Akashic Records" series here: http://bit.ly/aftar-vol-1 After 200 episodes and 5 years of Podcasting, our beloved Honest-to-God Series is being semi-retired. The Honest-to-God Series will continue, but only 1 episode a month. We are also adding a new show in Jan 2017 called, yes, "Answers From The Akashic Records"! And that will be weekly each Saturday at 10 am PST. It will be Aingeal Rose and I taking each question from each book in the Answers From The Akashic Records Series in turn, and discussing the question and answer at length. We will do a major revision of the World of Empowerment website in 2017. Because many people have asked for entry level access into the world of consciousness, and others wanted advanced knowledge, we have decided to simplify everything and we will be catering for both levels with our new layout. Next, we will resume the Group Akashic Records Sessions starting the 1st Sunday in January 2017! We will be sending the join link to all our subscribers, so make sure you are on our list. As you know, each session of the Akashic Records produces around 40 profound statements that we call Profundities. At this stage, we have over 4,000 profundities that many of you want. So, we will launch a Mobile App in 2017 so you can access the profundities more easily each day. This mobile app that will deliver 1-a-day to your phone, and yes, it will be free! In 2017 we will launch the Sacred Earth Waters website. This site will make the Sacred Earth Waters available to the public all over the world for the first time - http://sacredearthwaters.com Finally, we mentioned in the beginning about a head start. Well, it is a shaved head start. Ahonu is donating his hair to charity! This is not some future date like 2017 - it is this week! I am donating it to an organization called Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis that includes severe burns, cancer survivors, or suffer from any number of skin disorders that cause permanent hair loss. The children receive the hair prostheses free of charge. So there you are. Lots happening in 2017. Here's a quick summary of what we're doing, much or which has already started. We are republishing Aingeal's books. We will publish all 100 of the Akashic Records sessions as Print and eBooks. We are starting a Crowdfunding campaign to help us fund the 100 print books. The Honest-to-God Series is being semi-retired. A new podcast is being created called "Answers From The Akashic Records". We are doing a major revision of the World of Empowerment website. We will resume the Group Akashic Records Sessions starting the 1st Sunday in January. We will launch a Mobile App so you can access the profundities more easily each day. Our Sacred Sites Tour of Ireland in 2017 has become uncertain. Based on your requests, we may reignite it. We will launch the Sacred Earth Waters website. Finally, this week, Ahonu is shaving his head and donating his hair to an organization called Locks of Love for financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
