Returning Pencil Buster Dr. Paul Thomas joins us to help us break down the "science of reading." This is a topic we've covered frequently, most recently with Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige this week. But Dr. Paul brings a uniquely nuanced and deep knowledge of the marketing scheme/regressive conservative political tool masquerading as a curriculum set to the show. Because Dr. Paul's dug deep, and with his 40+ year career as a literacy educator, writer, and speaker he is one educated educator on the topic. Don't be fooled by their talk of "science", Dr. Paul urges us. It is a method for censorship and limiting of educators. We can do so much better. And our students deserve so much better. Yet conservative lawamakers have written laws literally banning the teaching of anything except the so-called "science of reading." Come on, let's not remove tools from our educators' literacy teaching kits. That's just foolish. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, educated educator to the extreme, Pencil Buster extraordinarie, and also Matt Damon's mom, joins us. We begin by checking in with Dr. Nancy. Since we last spoke, President Trump began his second term in office with a barrage of anti-education executive actions. Hold strong, educated educators. Then, we turn to a favorite discussion on BustED Pencils: literacy pedagogy. Nancy, with Julie Hackett, published this piece last week on "the fallacy of settled science in literacy." As in all aspects of education, literacy presents complex needs for a diverse learning population. While one teaching style works for many, no style works for all. And teachers must have a robust tool box to adapt to each learner's needs. Nancy argues that the so-called Science of Reading is actually a pedagogical fad, promoting a simple solution to a complex problem. And that's no solution at all. To start learning more, check out Robert Tierney and P David Pearson's open-access book Fact-Checking the Science of Reading. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. As we continue the work of naming this moment, we wonder: what would Matt Damon's mom say about all this? Thankfully, we have her number, so we asked! Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, one of our favorite long-time Pencil Busters, returns to share her thoughts on what to do now. We live in a different moment than we've ever experienced. As we prepare for the second Trump presidency, educated educators need to focus on educating. With historic wealth inequality, an explosion of disinformation on social media, and self-declared Christian Nationalists overtaking our public education systems, we've got a lot of work ahead of us! Nancy shares how she's been leaning on the memory of her friend, Howard (Howie) Zinn; we've been doing the same! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. What would Matt Damon's mom think of calling Trump and JD Vance "weird"? Well, we asked her! On the one hand, weird is a loaded word, especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community and all those who've been saddled with the term in childhood or beyond. On the other hand, countering a bully requires flexibility to adapt and match their style. Plus, using the word offers an opportunity to reclaim and redirect it. Like most everything, there's nuance here, and we embrace healthy discussion and debate around it! Special guest Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige walks us through Three-Cueing system: what it is, how it's helped millions of kids learn to read, and the real controversy based on a false premise surrounding teaching with it. The Three-Cueing system, which uses context, meaning, and sound to help learners make sense of language, is now illegal to use as a pedagogy in many states. So if it's illegal to teach using context, meaning, and sound, how the heck are students supposed to learn how to read? In this week's program, we explore the proliferation of virtual schools. Virtual schools offer on-line education to primary and secondary school students without the added expenses associated with brick and mortar structures and unionized teachers and support staff. We hear opinions on virtual schools from well-known education scholars Jonathon Kozol and Diane Ravitch. We investigate one such virtual school, the Massachusetts Virtual Academy in Greenfield, Massachusetts. We talk with the superintentendent of schools, Dr. Susan Hollins, who was the driving force behind the opening of that school in 2010, and we also speak with two Greenfield School Committee members, Maryelen Calderwood and Andrew Blais, who opposed it. Finally, we turn to early childhood education scholar Nancy Carlsson-Paige, who talks about the vitally important social, emotional and cognitive needs of young children that are in danger of not being met by virtual schools. We also explore K12 Inc., a for-profit publicly traded technology-based education company that touts itself as the largest provider of proprietary curriculum and online education programs for primary and secondary students in the United States. It is also one of the fastest growing operators of virtual charter schools worldwide. K-12 Inc. was founded in 1999 by Michael Milken and William J. Bennett, a former Reagan Secretary of Education and Bush senior drug czar. We take some time to talk about the background of these men, along with several others involved with this company.
