The greatest sadness of the India Free Trade Deal, for me to this point, is that the rhetoric has not paid due respect to where free trade basically began. New Zealand. We are the pioneers. Well, the modern pioneers. The concept goes back to the mid 1800's where Britain and Europe had various deals. The GATT agreements of the 1940's made significant progress but the deal with Australia in the 80's put it well and truly on our radar and, along with Roger Douglas, Mike Moore made a name, if not fame, with the desire to do cross border business free from the impediment of tariffs. For a while free trade deals had their time in the sun. They got, I thought, a bit watered down with block deals. The CPTPP is your classic example and even our EU deal is widely accepted as being inferior to proper one-on-one deals like China or now India, because when you get 27 nations together there is bound to be a bunch of protectionists in there. India is also worth respecting because it's India and it's been a prize for many, many years. It's the last truly large country and, not just that, but a truly large country actually going places. If this country has an international calling card, it's trade. We box above our weight, we do business on quality, we buy and sell on a fair price and not a jacked-up protected price. Within all deals you will find critics or clauses that aren't perfect. It's free trade, not perfect trade, and even a free trade deal technically can, and does, host tariffs. But the intent, and indeed the outworking of them all, is that the business between two countries is better, freer and bigger than it was before signing. NZ First are on the wrong side of this and the irony cannot be lost that its leader is a foreign minister who spends his time globally looking to engage and encourage engagement between countries. Nothing encourages engagement more than doing business. Labour said it's not the deal they would have done. Isn't it? What is the deal they did when they were in power? That's right, there wasn't one. Successive Governments have failed to cross the line. This, without a shadow of a doubt, in 20 years will be like China; big, bold, successful and constantly upgraded. We will all see it eventually. But in the ensuing years since we were free trade evangelists, we've become increasingly myopic, if not racist. Free trade is what we are good at. We should celebrate what we are good at more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EDITORIAL: Well, well, well… here we go again The theatre, the pressure, the whispers, the leaks — and then bang — Christopher Luxon walks into caucus and says, “righto, let's settle this.” Yesterday, we asked for exactly that, didn't we? I said on this show, I wanted to see a bit of steel. A bit of fight. Not the polished corporate lines, not the media training — I wanted to see a Prime Minister Christopher Luxon look like he was in charge. And to his credit, that's exactly what he did. He forced the issue. He didn't let it drift. He didn't let the knives keep circling in the dark. Because just think about the significance of this for a second. This is the first time a sitting Prime Minister has actually asked for a confidence vote. First time ever and that matters. We've seen pressure like this before — opposition leaders, sure — but not from the top job. Not like this. In the past, leaders like Geoffrey Palmer and Mike Moore, or Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley, they were told they didn't have the numbers. The writing was on the wall. But they never forced the room to prove it. Luxon did. He walked in and said, “look me in the eye — am I your leader or not?” And here's the follow-up question, no one's really asking yet. What happens if the next poll drops… and it's worse? And the one after that… worse again? Does this become the playbook now? Every time the numbers dip, do we march back into caucus and demand another vote? Because that's not strength — that's instability dressed up as decisiveness. And we'll never know the numbers. Three-hour meeting, by all accounts. Plenty of MPs getting up, speaking, backing him, positive vibes — that's the line we're getting fed. And in the end, he's still standing. He's still the Prime Minister. So on paper, it's a win. But — and there's always a but — what kind of win is it? Because afterwards, when he walked out to face the media, it wasn't the big united front we expected. No wall of senior ministers behind him showing overwhelming strength. It was just him… and Nicola Willis. And I've got to be honest — and I know people roll their eyes when I say this — but I watch body language. She didn't look comfortable. She didn't look like someone who'd just come out of a rock-solid show of unity. It felt… off. Now maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe that's just the moment. But politics is theatre, and that moment told a story. So where does that leave us this morning? Is this the reset Luxon needed — the line in the sand, the moment he takes control and says “enough”? Or is this just round one of a longer fight that's still bubbling away under the surface? Because forcing the vote is bold. No question. But bold only works if it actually shuts things down. Did it, or did it just expose how close this really is? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After some of the most hectic months in the history of New Zealand politics, Jim Bolger faces a white-knuckle byelection in Tamaki. In the seat vacated by the pugnacious Rob Muldoon, even the National candidate seems to be standing against the government. With the impacts of radical and painful reforms still raw, a general election rapidly approaches. It will go right down to the wire, and serve up an unforgettable pair of election night speeches from Bolger and Mike Moore. On the left, a new force challenges Labour for supremacy: Jim Anderton's Alliance. Helen Clark mounts a coup. And Bolger confronts a critical question: what to do with Ruth Richardson? Plus: a very strange visit to Moscow prompts a nuclear-submarines-for-butter proposition. Includes new and exclusive interviews with Jim Bolger, Ruth Richardson, Jenny Shipley, Helen Clark, Sandra Lee-Vercoe, Rob Eaddy, Bill Birch and more. Stuart Nash turning up at the conference over the weekend - that was quite a coup for New Zealand First. Now, clearly what New Zealand First is trying to do is emulate what Reform - Nigel Farage's party - in the UK is doing. If you've been following what they're up to, they have had a huge number of politicians defect to Reform. And every single time it happens, the news media covers it and it makes Reform look like the party with the momentum. That is what New Zealand First is trying to do. That's why you had both Stuart Nash, formerly of Labour, and Harete Hipango, formerly of National, at the conference over the weekend. Now, despite the circumstances of Stuart leaving Parliament, he's actually a really big defection from Labour because he's a very capable politician. He managed to turn Napier into a red seat in 2014, despite the popularity of the Key Government at the time. He was one of the few ministers in the Ardern administration that voters on the right actually had time for. He is, and I think that's because he's a proper centrist in the Labour Party - not crazy left like a lot of them are, a little bit more to the right - which is why he's probably going to find a better home for himself in New Zealand First than the Labour Party of 2025. Now, I don't know if Labour realizes what they've lost with Stuart Nash leaving. I mean, of course, he's really been out of Labour since the moment Chippy fired him, but I don't think they even realized then what they'd lost because they haven't replaced him. And what I mean by that is they haven't gone looking for another true centrist politician. Back in the day, Labour had heaps of them. They had Phil Goff, David Shearer and just going back through time - Richard Prebble, Roger Douglas, Mike Moore - it wasn't that unusual to have a good little centrist or righty sitting in the Labour Party. Now, name one for me. I mean, you might have once been able to say Chippy, but he's allowed himself to be pulled so far to the left, I'm not sure you could call him a centrist anymore. Now, you cannot, as a Labour Party, win over the centre voter if you do not have politicians that the centre voter likes. And Stuart Nash, I think, was probably the last one of them. I would say: total coup for New Zealand First. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's the worst thing you ever saw at a sports game? Someone throw a battery at a Make-a-Wish kid? Sure, if you're from Philly, but what if you were from California. On today's episode: we'll talk about zombies and crucifictions and collapsing buildings before we even get into it; we're going to watch the shortest baseball game of all time; and we're going to cut off one of your limbs in one of the more claustrophobic ways possible. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear of one of the most extreme, but very different kind of arm-severing examples of self-rescue in history; the story of a must-have, closed-casket-funeral-friendly rescue device and the absolutely brutal, very public early use of it; and a really dirty, smutty explanation how earthquakes work.By popular request, we present The Loma Prieta Earthquake Disaster of 1989! So, we'll end up talking about my history with zombies and a popular crucifixion and a slowly collapsing building - two of three events set in San Francisco itself – all before we settle in to watch the shortest baseball game of all time. Not just that, we're actually going to (for the first time ever) interrupt a safety segment with a Patreon-exclusive retelling of the shockingly horrific and awful just-kill-me-now-already story of Aron Ralston. You might remember him as the guy who chewed his arm off after an 800 pound boulder pinned him to a canyon wall in Utah. He didn't actually chew his arm off though. What he did was at least a thousand times worse. We'll also do a little retelling of the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Can't not do a San Francisco Earthquake disaster without at least bringing it up.Celebrity guest appearances include world famous author and travel enthusiast, Bill Bryson; crucified magician and Jesus' friend, Saint Andrew; real estate suckers Joe Montana and Kevin Durant; all four Beatles; sports broadcasters, Al Michaels and Tim McCarver; newscaster, Ted Koppel; crosstown World Series players Dave Stewart, Mike Moore, Jose Canseco, Dave Parker and Terry Kennedy. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channelsApple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for moreFacebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcastTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee atwww.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday
