Show Notes: The Power of Liking for SpeakersWelcome back! In this solo episode, John dives into one of Robert Cialdini's most underrated principles of influence—liking. If you've ever wondered why some speakers seem to get booked again and again, or how you can turn your audience into true fans without changing a word of your keynote, this episode is for you.Introduction: Why Liking MattersJohn kicks things off by sharing why understanding the principle of liking is a game-changer for anyone who wants to get booked, rebooked, or simply make a bigger impact as a speaker. It's not just about what you say on stage—it's about how you connect with people, both on and off the mic.The Science Behind LikingDrawing on Cialdini's research, John explains that we're all more likely to say “yes” to people we genuinely like. He shares his own journey, from starting out with a small audience to building a platform and podcast, all by focusing on curiosity, generosity, and authentic relationships.Real Connections vs. Transactional InteractionsJohn gets real about the difference between building genuine connections and falling into the trap of being transactional. He shares stories from his own experience—how being easy to work with and showing appreciation opened doors to new opportunities, referrals, and collaborations. How to Be More Likeable (and Why It Matters)This chapter is packed with practical advice. John talks about the importance of using audience-relevant language, sharing stories (especially the ones where things didn't go perfectly), and being open about your own quirks and mistakes. He reminds us that being likeable isn't about flattery or people-pleasing—it's about being real, approachable, and easy to work with.Likability Killers to AvoidNot everything is sunshine and roses—John also covers the behaviours that can quickly destroy likability. From being overly self-focused or inauthentic, to lacking emotional presence or coming across as rigid, he explains why these habits can hold you back as a speaker.Authenticity Over PerfectionOne of the big takeaways from this episode is that you don't need to win everyone over. In fact, trying to please everyone is a losing game. Instead, focus on showing up as someone who's trustworthy, warm, and competent. Likability can't make up for a bad talk, but it can turn a good one into something unforgettable.Wrapping Up & What's NextJohn closes the episode by encouraging you to be the speaker people want to work with and invite back. If you found this valuable, don't forget to like, subscribe, and check out the links in the show notes for free tools to help you build ethical influence. And stay tuned—the next episode will explore another of Cialdini's heavy hitters: reciprocity. Thanks for listening! But in that moment that I know I don't have the capacity to do both, I reach for the one that's unfamiliar but that will save me from the trouble that I tend to get myself in because that autopilot thing still applies."Karen & Paul unpack how to be both warm and assertive in your communication. In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, Shad and Dustin dive into the important concept of likability vs. status popularity, discussing how the principles of kindness and genuine relationships can have a lasting positive impact. The conversation is sparked by the wisdom shared by Kyle Collinsworth, former BYU basketball star, who advises high school students to “put down cool and pick up kindness.” They explore an article by child psychologist Mitch Prinstein, who explains the two types of popularity: likability, where people make others feel good, and status, which focuses on outward appearances and social power. The latter may provide short-term recognition, but as Prinstein points out, it often leads to loneliness, stress, and dissatisfaction in the long run. On the other hand, likability brings lasting benefits: stronger relationships, career success, and even improved well-being. Drawing from sports and their own experiences, Shad and Dustin emphasize how athletes have a unique opportunity to leverage their status to bless others, rather than impress them. They stress that being a likable athlete—one who lifts others up and values relationships—creates a ripple effect that lasts long after the game ends. Join us for a conversation about the importance of kindness, authentic connections, and why building likability is far more important than chasing status. No matter where you are on your author journey, it can feel like there's always more to learn—because there is! Especially when you're new to this process. So many questions to ask and even more questions that you wouldn't even know to ask. Just getting a book out of your head and into a format that can be purchased takes a tremendous amount of effort. Let's make sure you don't just hit publish, but that you properly launch your book so it helps you achieve all of the goals you had for writing a business book in the first place. To help you figure out some of those goals and avoid some common mistakes, I've brought together an author panel. Stay tuned for a frank conversation about the highs and lows of being a business author. These authors participated in one of my Kindle Cross-Promotion campaigns, in which business authors lowered their Kindle book prices to 99 cents. I organize these twice a year around Amazon Prime Days and Black Friday. Dozens of authors working collaboratively to spread the word and boost book sales. It's been a great way to generate interest in evergreen books published many years earlier and celebrate recent publications. The best part is that our collaboration doesn't end when the campaign is over. Nearly every author opted to sign up for an author panel after the event. With me today are three authors: Carlo Mahfouz authored “Reality Check: In Pursuit of the Right Questions” to unlock the art of precision and presence in your leadership, innovation, and life. Bill Soroka is the author of six books, five of which reached #1 Best Seller in at least one category during the last Kindle Cross-Promotion Campaign, including his latest, “Your Passport to Apostilles: 116 Tips to Build a Thriving Business as an Apostille Agent.” Michelle Tillis Lederman is the author of “The Connector's Advantage: 7 Mindsets to Grow Your Influence and Impact,” a follow-up to her best-selling “The 11 Laws of Likability,” because she knows the strength of relationships leads to success.
