Creating a home environment that supports meaningful play can feel like a constant puzzle, from managing toy overload to setting up spaces that actually encourage focus, creativity, and independence. So today I'm sharing a conversation with Myriam Sandler, the creator of the hugely popular Mothercould platform and the author of the new book Playful by Design: A Stress-Free Guide to Raising Confident, Creative Kids through Independent Play. As a mother of three, Myriam shares engaging, easy-to-follow video tutorials that offer accessible DIY play ideas, parenting hacks, family travel tips, and more on her wildly popular Instagram and TikTok. Though I'm no longer dealing with toys lying around the house and cluttering our communal spaces, I definitely found life with my child's toys challenging, from how to organize them and store them, to how to avoid having too many toys that never got used. I really could have used Myriam's insights way back then. But if you're still very much in it and sharing a home and life with things like toys, art supplies, and more, have a listen to this episode. Myriam and I discussed the power of independent play and why less is more when it comes to toys, how boredom can actually be a gift, and how small tweaks, like decluttering a play space or setting up “play hotspots,” can make a big difference in your child's ability to play solo. Myriam really believes in making the space you have, the toys you have, and the system you implement work for you instead of trying to make someone else's system work for your family. I hope you walk away feeling empowered knowing that you don't need a ton of new things but just some time to evaluate what's working and what's not. About my guest Myriam Sandler is the creator of Mothercould (@mothercould), a beloved kids' activity and family lifestyle community trusted by millions of families. As a mother of three, Myriam shares engaging, easy-to-follow video tutorials that offer accessible DIY play ideas, parenting hacks, family travel tips, and more. Mothercould has grown to offer family-friendly, problem-solving products now available at major retailers. You'll learn: Why boredom is an important aspect of sparking creativity and self-directed play How fewer toys can lead to deeper, more meaningful play The way that decluttering creates space for imagination to flourish What the key ingredients to independent play are, and what means and looks like The importance of boundaries and consistency in supporting sustained solo play How play “hotspots” and sensory activities can foster connection and emotional release Resources: Mothercould Playful by Design: A Stress-Free Guide to Raising Confident, Creative Kids through Independent Play by Myriam Sandler Mothercould on Instagram Mothercould on Facebook Playful By Design website Mothercould on TikTok Learn more about your ad choices. I have seven kids with really different personalities. It's funny how people can be raised in the same home and come out so different from each other. Something my kids all have in common though, is confidence. They are all incredibly brave. They aren't afraid to try new things, and I am in awe of the things they are learning and doing! While I'm not claiming to have "made them" that way, I do think there are some things I have done in my home to nurture confidence. In this episode I'm sharing those things.
When it comes to parenting, a lot of it is simply learned on the fly, but there is a method that may help us better navigate the traps and pitfalls of raising our kids. As parents, we spend so much time making sure our kids succeed in school, sports, and activities—but are we teaching them the life skills they'll need to thrive in the real world? From cooking and problem-solving to resilience and independence, these skills are just as important as academics (if not more!).In this episode of The Modern Mommy Doc Podcast, I sit down with Katie Kimball, a former teacher, mom of four, and the founder of Kids Cook Real Food, to talk about why life skills matter and how parents can start teaching them at any age. We dive into the research on kids' independence, the long-term benefits of hands-on learning, and practical ways to help kids build confidence and responsibility—without overwhelm.

Ever worry that your daughter lacks the confidence to solve her own problems and advocate for herself? Dr. Jordan describes how parents need to stop doing for kids what they can and need to do for themselves so that, like the great barrier reef, they can learn to grow strong and resilient. The Great Barrier Reef stretches some 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. “I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colorful,” a traveler observed. “Why is this?”The guide gave an interesting answer: “The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, storms – surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces. Then he added this telling note: “That's the way it is with every living organism.” Children need to be allowed to make mistakes, suffer, get frustrated and work thru their emotions and problems to gain the strength, resilience, and confidence that they can take care of themselves, solve their own problems and overcome adversities and challenges because they have been allowed to throughout their lives. Stop doing for kids what they can and need to do for themselves so that, like the great barrier reef, they can learn to grow strong, vibrant, and resilient.Join Our Community:https://www.facebook.com/DrTimJordanhttps://www.instagram.com/drtimjordan/https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-jordan-md-79799120b/

In this weeks episode, John and Jerry discuss their brand new book The Champion Sports Parent: Practical Wisdom for Raising Confident, Competitive, Mentally Tough Athletes. They wrote this book as a companion to last year's The Champion Teammate, so that parents can best support their children along their athletic journey. Many parents have grown frustrated by the youth sports industrial complex and want to know how to create an exceptional sporting journey for your athletes. They have you heard about concepts such as confidence, mental toughness, and competitiveness, but are not quite sure how to help their athletic child develop these important character traits, while overcoming adversity and the inevitable ups and downs of playing sports. This book is the culmination of their decades of working with Olympians, World Champions, All-Americans, and over 100 championship teams. They have interviewed some of the world's top athletes, coaches, and authors on this podcast, conducted hundreds of workshops for coaches, parents and sports organizations across the globe, and helped their own children become successful competitive athletes. Today John and Jerry discuss some of the highlights of the book, why they wrote it, and share some of their favorite chapters. THE CHAMPION SPORTS PARENT IS AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER! In this replay from 2019, John talks with Ted Kroeten (@Joyofthepeople), founder of Joy of the People, a free play soccer program in Minnesota. Kroeten leads the way in rethinking and delivering player development always championing kids and possibilities based on his experienced, dedicated, and innovative soccer career. Joy of the People's mission statement provides a clear idea of what they're attempting to provide: To support the idea of play as an important part of a child's development, to build small soccer spaces for kids to play, to serve disadvantaged youth, and to build community spirit. Here are some highlights from the Podcast: What happened when free play was introduced into practice? How does the now defunct idea of “10,000 hours” play into free play and increasing performance? An amazing story of a soccer club famed for youth player development, with numerous expensive player transfers, yet they sign their players after the age of 16 The younger teams get beat in competition, but how does it work out when they get older? There is a time for structure, when is that time? What is going on with the athlete that did not grow up in the academy setting but blows away those who grew up in the deliberate practice environment? How can you add free play into your performance development practice plan? What are “kid micro-clubs”? Today's episode is with Dr Jo-Ann Finkelstein, author of the hot new release "Sexism and Sensibility. Dr. Finkelstein's work focuses on understanding and dismantling sexism for parents trying to raise confident and powerful girls in a culture that often demeans them. The world is full of mixed messages for girls: Stand up for yourself but do it softly. Be independent but not single. Love your body, just make sure it's waxed, bleached, and thin. And then there are the more overt hostilities: being talked over, paid less, touched without permission, and having politicians debate their right to bodily autonomy. Many parents find it simpler to affirm girls' strength than to address these distressing experiences directly. But with girls' skyrocketing rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide, parenting them in this culture presents an urgent challenge: How do we teach girls to recognize and cope with these realities without crushing their optimism and belief that they can incite change? Jo-Ann Finkelstein, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who was educated at Harvard University and Northwestern University and now maintains a private clinical practice. An expert blogger for Psychology Today, her work has been highlighted in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Harvard Business Review, Women's Health, Oprah Daily, Parents, and on HuffPost and CNN. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Ms., Your Teen, among other publications. Dr. Finkelstein serves on the Advisory Board for Stop Sexual Assault in Schools, has served on the board of the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women, volunteered for Planned Parenthood PAC, and was an organizer for the Chicago Women's March. She lives in Chicago, Illinois. In the first hour of "Connections with Evan Dawson" on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, guest host Eric Logan sits down with Ruth Holland Scott to discuss her new book, “Raising Confident Children.”
The benefits of attachment parenting cannot be overstated. Securely attached kids are more confident, connected and more prepared to enter the world. They also tend to experience fewer health problems. But why? Here to share more about the science behind attachment parenting and how we can raise confident connected children is Eli Harwood. Eli is a licensed therapist who lives in Colorado with her husband and three children. She's an expert on attachment theory and the author of Raising Securely Attached Kids, which will be available September 2024. She also loves playing dress up with her kids, obsessing about sourdough starter. And reminiscing about that one time, she won a set of globes as a Price Is Right contestant. The good news is that even if you haven't been parenting in a way that promotes attachment up to now, this process is flexible and ever changing. The best time to start is right now. Listen in to hear all of Eli's tips and tricks no matter the age of your children. In this episode, we discuss: What securely attached parenting is. How it benefits children throughout their lives. How you can cultivate it in your own home. We touch on highly sensitive children, how you can connect with them and help them to feel more seen and secure. How is secure attachment parenting different from William Sears' attachment parenting? What are common life events that test the bond between kids and parents, and how can they be overcome? How can you restore the bond with your kid if it has been broken? Is it ever too late to switch to a secure attachment parenting style? Disclaimer: This podcast does not provide medical advice. While we all probably want to raise healthy and happy children, many of us also have the goal to raise children who are not only confident but also independent – equipped with the skills and mindset to navigate what life throws at them. Whether by choice or necessity, the children of working moms often don't have the luxury of having things done for them like they would if we were stay-at-home moms, and I, for one, think that's actually not a bad thing. Honestly, I believe the importance of instilling confidence and independence in our kids cannot be overstated. As working moms, we understand that our absence during certain parts of the day doesn't diminish our role in shaping our children's character. In fact, it requires a more intentional and focused approach to parenting. We don't have the luxury of 16 hours a day to spend with our children. This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast we discuss nurturing independence while being present, building confidence through positive reinforcement, and building a supportive environment. How do you find balance in raising confident and independent kids while still serving them?Teaching confidence and independence involves knowing when to step back and when to step in. It's about offering guidance and support while allowing them the space to try, fail, learn, and try again.Encouraging them to try new things and praising their efforts—whether big or small—can do wonders. Celebrate their victories, but also teach them how to handle challenges and setbacks gracefully. Remind them that mistakes are stepping stones to success, not stumbling blocks. It's natural to want to shield our kids from life's challenges, but fostering independence is so important. Start with age-appropriate responsibilities and gradually increase them. Letting them make choices (even if it means a mismatched outfit occasionally) helps them learn decision-making skills.
