We're back! This season we're focusing on worship, particularly worship that is transformative. Our season long guest is Rory Noland and we will be working with his book, Transforming Worship: Planning and Leading Sunday Services as If Spiritual Formation Mattered. In addition to Ruth and Rory, we will also be bringing other guests into the conversations about worship with spiritual formation at its core. This season is for all who worship, not just pastors and leaders who plan the weekly services!   In today's episode Aaron Niequist joins Ruth and Rory to discuss the practices that make up Transforming Worship. They discuss how Covid revealed just how little participation was required in most church services, the temptation leaders face to create emotional experiences rather than allow space for the Holy Spirit to do its work, and what's wrong with how most of us pray in worship settings. This conversation is full of thoughtful dialogue and practical advice.   Aaron Niequist is a liturgist, writer, and pastor who recently graduated from General Theological Seminary in NYC. After leading worship at Mars Hill Church (Grand Rapids, MI) and Willow Creek Church (Barrington, IL), he created A New Liturgy - a collection of modern liturgical worship recordings. He then curated a discipleship-focused, formational, ecumenical, practice-based community at Willow Creek called “The Practice”. Aaron released a book called The Eternal Current: How a Practice-based Faith can Save us from Drowning, and continues to create resources to help others flesh it out. He currently serves at St Peter's Episcopal Church in Chelsea and helps lead Pastors, Priests and Guides retreats around the country. The best part of his life is his wife Shauna, and their sons Henry and William.  Aaronniequist.com   Rory Noland is the director of Heart of the Artist Ministries, an organization dedicated to serving artists in the church. He mentors worship leaders, speaks at churches and conferences, leads retreats for artists, and consults with churches in the areas of worship and the arts. Rory is also a trained spiritual director, a published songwriter and has authored five books, including the best-seller, The Heart of the Artist: A Character-Building Guide For You and Your Ministry Team. Rory earned a Doctoral Degree from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. In the last few episodes, I have talked to some phenomenal guests about their personal worship journey and how they've managed to continue making music. Developing new forms of expressions for yourself is an important step of the journey, but how about our communities? How do we practice our faith together in our new reality? About two years ago, I stumbled across Aaron Niequist's book The Eternal Current, in which he tells his story of leading worship on big stages and leaving it all behind. His ideas have transformed the way I think about church services and community, and I am so glad Aaron joins me on the podcast today to share more of his story. We talk about bringing about change in churches, and worship services in particular. Building a worship service with an eye towards a formative journey. SHOW NOTES “So deconstruction is not demolition, demolition is easy. You just rent a bulldozer, knock it all down. That's easy. That's not all that courageous - you can knock things down. But deconstruction, to say there is some good here and there is some toxicity here. How do I do the work to humbly enter in to take this piece, pull this layer back to explore? It's more about curiosity. But it's also so difficult. People underestimate the pain. The pain that initiates deconstruction, and then the pain of doing the deconstruction. — Aaron Niequist Aaron Niequist is our guest today, and his discussion with Steve is vulnerable, honest, and courageous. During last year's episode on prayer, Mark pined for some kind of “liturgy for daily worship,” a set pattern for Reformed devotion that fell somewhere between the complexity of the Book of Common Prayer and the informality of simply reading a daily dose of Scripture followed by extemporaneous prayer. With the publication of Jonathan Gibson's Be Thou My Vision: A Liturgy for Daily Worship, has this longing been satisfied? In this episode, Mark — who has been using the liturgy since the first of the year — introduces Cameron — who is seeing it for the first time — to the pros and cons. By the end, Mark even contradicts his basic character by recommending the e-book version.Mentioned in this episode:Be Thou My Vision (hardcover at Westminster Books)Be Thou My Vision (Kindle edition)THE COMMENTARY is a weekly conversation about vision, worship, and life at Grace Presbyterian Church.Subscribe on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts or Spotify
