    Ivy Insights

The Potter's Inn Soul Care Conversations podcast is a truly transformative experience. Each episode is filled with wisdom, thought-provoking discussions, and soul-stirring music that has revived and restored my spirit time and time again. From the moment I started listening, I found myself clinging to every word spoken by Steve and the crew. This podcast has become an essential part of my week, offering me a beautiful escape from the noise of everyday life and allowing me to slow down, think contemplatively, and deepen my connection with God.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the thoughtful discussion that takes place in each episode. Steve and his team do a fantastic job of diving deep into various topics related to soul care, exploring different perspectives and providing practical ways to apply what they discuss. The conversations are honest, vulnerable, and filled with valuable insights that have challenged me to reflect on how I nourish my mind, heart, and soul on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, the inclusion of soul-nurturing music adds another layer of depth to each episode, creating an immersive experience that truly refreshes the soul.

As for any potential drawbacks, it is challenging to find any significant negatives about this podcast. However, one minor aspect could be the occasional lengthiness of some episodes. While the discussions are always engaging and captivating, there were times when I wished they were a bit more concise or divided into smaller segments for easier consumption. That being said, this is merely a personal preference and does not detract from the overall excellence of this podcast.

In conclusion, The Potter's Inn Soul Care Conversations podcast is a remarkable offering that stands out amongst others in the world of podcasts focused on caring for the soul. Stephen and Gwen Adams have created something truly unique with their expertise in this field. Through their well-produced episodes and their genuine passion for helping others cultivate deep spiritual growth, they have crafted a resource that nourishes the soul and provides a much-needed space for contemplation and connection. I am immensely grateful for this podcast and eagerly look forward to future episodes that will focus on more aspects of what truly matters most.

Jesus modeled a different way to live. In today's episode, we learn how Jesus lived a life that began with acceptance by his Heavenly Father and ended by achieving more than any human being ever has. This cool breeze by the river bank. A great blue heron feeding in the shallows. The pilated woodpecker serenading the forest with its haunting song. I think I need one hundred days like this!   Slowly, ever so slowly. Here. Now. This! Bit by bit and little by little, I feel a twinge of what may be life. A steady erosion has happened in me. It's taken time to do this damage. It will take more time to regain what's been lost.     The locust have ravaged much I feel now. Sad stories, and far too many of them, have layered my heart with deep grief. I think I need one hundred days like this. But today, I just may have felt my heart again.   As I let this breeze wash over me, is this a baptism of love? And as silence does what only the deep quiet does, I sit here and stay here for a while this beautiful morn. Soaking. Marinating. Feasting . Healing.

I have learned to prize holy ignorance more highly than religious certainty and to seek companions who have arrived at the same place. We are a motley crew, distinguished not only by our inability to explain ourselves to those who are more certain of their beliefs than we are but in many cases by our distance from the centers of our faith communities as well. Like campers who have bonded over cook fires far from home, we remain grateful for the provisions that we have brought with us from those cupboards, but we also find them more delicious when we share them with one another under the stars.   —Barbara Brown Taylor _____________________________________________________ “Bible-believing religious people often miss the gospel. Just because you believe in the Bible doesn't mean you understand it. Over and over the tax collectors, prostitutes, and the amoral come to Jesus, while the religious miss who he is.” These are the words of well known and lived Tim Keller. FROM STEVE: Until we answer life's deepest questions, we will remain stuck— unable to live with freedom and vitality. This podcast is one where Gwen and I explore three core questions.  Remember this: we can never hear this message too much because living with soul and by soul is counter cultural and for many, counter intuitive!   SHOW NOTES In this episode we join Steve and Gwen for two sessions of their Soul Care 101 course recorded at the retreat center known as Potter's Inn at Aspen Ridge. Enjoy this fireside conversation with pops and crackles from the fireplace, as they examine the three core questions of every soul. In the first session they talk about:   Question 1 - Am I Loved? Every person everywhere wants to know if they are loved. Some (or all) of us may have love wounds where we either didn't get the love we needed or we looked for love in all the wrong places. Learn what it means to be beloved and how to rest in the truth of God's love for us.   Question 2 - Am I Safe? What fears do we carry with us that shape us? How do these fears affect our image of God? If we don't feel safe how does that affect how we relate to others? Also it's good to ask, am I a safe person? Do I listen to others or am I quick to judge? Question 3 - Do I Belong?    It is evident from an early age that we all want to belong to a group, a community. Where are we finding our safe community? Is it the right place? Are we able to be our true selves there or do we feel that we have to act or look a certain way? Do we change our behavior depending on where we are or who we are with?   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Download a Study Guide for Question 1 and Questions 2 and 3 Soul Care 101 Course Scripture reading: Deuteronomy 7:7-9 Moment to Breathe: The Inner Voice by Henri Nouwen. The Language of the Soul with Jeff Crosby

We carry these desires, our deepest longings, with us. It's part of what it means to be human, and they are drivers in our lives whether or not we acknowledge them. — Jeff Crosby SHOW NOTES Today's guest is Jeff Crosby, the author of the new book (releases May 23, 2023) Language of the Soul. For over fifteen years, Jeff has been searching for a language of the soul--a way to articulate our deepest longings. Through the years he gathered clues from within global music styles, from different cultures, from his own Christian tradition and its sacred texts--and from deep within himself. Jeff explores the ways in which God meets us in our deepest longings of the heart – our longing for home, friendship, forgiveness, spiritual transformation, and more – not by satisfying our every desire but by granting us what we genuinely need. SPECIAL GUEST JEFF CROSBY Jeff Crosby is the president and CEO of ECPA, the trade association of Christian publishing, and has spent nearly four decades working in the world of words as a bookseller, publisher, and author. His writing has appeared in numerous magazines and journals including CRUX, Conversations Journal, Books & Culture, Urban Faith, and Living Lutheran. He is the editor and compiler of "Days of Grace Through the Year" (a collection of writings by Lewis B. Smedes) and the author of The Language of the Soul, which is released May 23, 2023. Crosby earned an undergraduate degree in journalism and a master's degree in leadership development, where his area of special emphasis was creating mentoring cultures in organizations.  He has been married to Cindy Crosby, a writer, educator, and naturalist, for more than 40 years, and has two grown children and six grandchildren.  You can find more at JeffreyCrosby.net.   MENTIONED IN PODCAST The Language of the Soul: Meeting God in the Longings of our Heart by Jeff Crosby Jeff's Website   MUSIC USED IN PODCAST Music Break at 52:25 - Always With Me (Song for Anxiety) - IAMSON SUPPORT THE PODCAST Please consider a gift to support our ministry. Roger's Website Roger's Books   Mentioned in Podcast Come Before Winter Retreat A Brief for the Defense by Jack Gilbert Sorrow everywhere. Slaughter everywhere. If babies are not starving someplace, they are starving somewhere else. With flies in their nostrils. But we enjoy our lives because that's what God wants. Otherwise the mornings before summer dawn would not be made so fine. The Bengal tiger would not be fashioned so miraculously well. The poor women at the fountain are laughing together between the suffering they have known and the awfulness in their future, smiling and laughing while somebody in the village is very sick. There is laughter every day in the terrible streets of Calcutta, and the women laugh in the cages of Bombay. If we deny our happiness, resist our satisfaction, we lessen the importance of their deprivation. We must risk delight. We can do without pleasure, but not delight. Not enjoyment. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world. To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil. If the locomotive of the Lord runs us down, we should give thanks that the end had magnitude. We must admit there will be music despite everything. We stand at the prow again of a small ship anchored late at night in the tiny port looking over to the sleeping island: the waterfront is three shuttered cafés and one naked light burning. To hear the faint sound of oars in the silence as a rowboat comes slowly out and then goes back is truly worth all the years of sorrow that are to come. ————- From Collected Poems by Jack Gilbert. In the dark, Charged with a change of atmosphere, at first I couldn't tell my body from the room. And I was wide awake, full of this feeling, Alert as though I'd heard a doorknob twist, A drawer pulled, and instead of terror knew The intrusion of an overwhelming joy. I had said thanks and this was the response. But how I said it or what I said it for I still cannot recall and I have tried All sorts of ways all hours of the night. Their roots are intertwined under the ground, making a grove of trees into one big tree. The story of Lazarus echoes the spiritual lesson of the aspen grove: we cannot grow alone. We were never meant to remain alone as we emerge from the tomb. As we learn from Lazarus, we see that our roots intertwine with others. SHOW NOTES How many times have you thought you were completely alone in this stress-filled world - financial issues, family conflicts, marital struggles, depression… the list is long and exhausting. The big question is, does God care about all that? Does he care that your kids are misbehaving and making you lose your mind? That at night you can't get your mind to shut off and goes further into depression and anxiety? That you and your spouse can barely talk to each other? The answer is so much more complex than a simple “yes.” Listen in as Steve speaks to this very question. Enjoy this fireside conversation with pops and crackles from the fireplace, as they examine the three core questions of every soul.   Question 1 - Am I Loved? Resources mentioned in the podcast Download a Study Guide for Question 1 and Questions 2 and 3 Soul Care 101 Course: Purchase here at the Potter's Inn Bookstore Scripture reading: Deuteronomy 7:7-9 Moment to Breathe: The Inner Voice by Henri Nouwen. “When human beings are devalued, everything in society turns sour. Women are humiliated and children despised. The sick are regarded as a nuisance, and the elderly as a burden. Ethnic minorities as discriminated against. The poor are oppressed and denied social justice…labour is exploited in the mines and factories. There is no freedom, no dignity, no carefree joy. Human life seems not worth living because it is scarcely human any longer…people matter…because every man, woman, and child has worth and significance as a human being made in the God's image and likeness.” —John Stott “The Contemporary Christian"   Understanding is the Way Forward A riot is the language of the unheard.--Dr. Martin Luther King Understanding is the way forward. Understanding will help everyone breathe. Understanding will help everyone care. Understanding will help us know what needs to change and how we can transform culture together. We will never care for our soul until we understand the soul. That was my journey--a journey of understanding of how complex I am; how unique I am; how fearfully and wonderfully made I am--and you too. This changed everything for me and will change everything for all of us as well. We will not care for anything--a plant--a dog--a hamster or a tomato plant until we understand what that living "thing" needs. The same is true of caring for a human being. We will not care until we understand. Dallas Willard said, 'Understanding is the beginning of care." I believe him on this! Until I understand human dignity I will not honor human life of any color or any age or any ethnicity. Until I understand love-- I cannot really love and I will not offer love. Until I understand the high costs of not forgiving and not being forgiven, I will not forgive. And the beginning of all understanding is listening. To listen is to love. Let me say it again, to listen is to love. I've learned that in my marriage, in my parenting, in my friendships and now I must learn this in this global pandemic disease of racism. I must listen. I must shut my mouth; not offer my opinions as a white male who was educated in great schools and just listen. Understanding is the only way forward. And when we understand one another we will finally learn to love each other. When George Floyd cried out, "I can't breathe!" What do you really understand he might have been saying? What can we listen to? What can we now understand? I felt compelled today to record a new podcast for Potter's Inn Soul Care Conversation Podcast on "Understanding Human Dignity." Spoiler alert: When I give this talk around the world, it normally results in a standing ovation... Why? Because perhaps this talks helps articulates for some of us what we might be feeling but can't yet say--what might still be pre-verbal in our watching the news these days and feeling so saddened yet so paralyzed by thinking through what can I do?   MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Soul Care Institute
