Aaron asks Rev Stephanie three questions about what it means to be a Christ-follower in the world right now, and helps us all reflect on our own lives. First, what location has shaped your faith in helpful and unhelpful ways? Second, why is it so important to gather these days rather than isolate? Third, why have you not given up on the Way of Jesus?
Tara Owens joins Aaron Niequist to reflect on the why, what, and how of Spiritual Direction. Tara is the founder and executive director of Anam Cara Ministries where she has been companioning others for nearly 20 years as a certified spiritual director and supervisor.
Aaron Niequist invites us into the practice of Centering Prayer. He shares the story of how this practice helped him heal through a difficult season, and guides a short centering prayer during the episode. Show notes, links, and further next steps are at The Between Retreats Substack.
Welcome to a three month series hosted by Pastors, Priests and Guides and The Eternal Current Podcast. Aaron Niequist welcomes a diverse group of guests to reflect on the question: "What are the practices that can form us into the kinds of people and communities who make Civil War less likely, and make God's dream for our world more possible?" Guests Brian Mclaren, Rev Stephanie Spellers, Drew Jackson, and many more will share a short reflection on the times in which we live, and teach practices that help us choose the peace-making Way of Christ. Drew Jackson invites us to practice Sabbath in a conscious way. Even in our practice of rest, we stay awake to the realities that keep our neighbors from rest, and move toward them in solidarity. What needs to change so that everyone can rest?
Drew Jackson continues his conversation with Aaron Niequist and invites into the practice and posture of Solidarity. "If we have no peace, it's because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." (St Mother Teresa)
Drew Jackson sits down with Aaron Niequist for a three part conversation about mystery, solidarity, and Sabbath as Resistance. In this first episode, using stories and his own poetry, Drew invites us to begin with the questions rather than demand certainty.

Beth Allison Barr is the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University and author of the book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Today, Beth shares how she grew up knowing Jesus, learning that there were some things women didn't do, and how intellectual curiosity is deeply important for her spiritual journey. We also discuss how knowing Church history and taking a curious approach to biblical interpretation can shape our faith in positive ways. Beth's story reminds us that understanding church history with an inquisitive mind is a vital part of Christian growth. Listen to Beth's story here or where you get your podcasts. Stories Beth shared: Growing up in a Christian family in Texas Never not knowing faith in Jesus and getting baptized as a young woman Realizing that there were expected gender roles in high school Using her intellectual curiosity and how that clashed with a literal interpretation of the Bible The distinction between man's interpretation of God and who God really is Meeting her husband Seeing churches regressing in terms of intellectual curiosity Why KJV only is problematic Why historical context is critical to understanding texts How medieval history can help us now Being angry at God and the letters of despair that helped her When God spoke to her after her husband was fired Historical context and how it helps our hermeneutic Great quotes from Beth: My parents were never afraid of me being curious. My story fits into a story that's a lot bigger than me and I'm thankful to be part of that story. Historical context does not diminish the Bible as God's Word. It just helps us better understand God's Word. God does not look like the white, Evangelical church. Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
We're back! This season we're focusing on worship, particularly worship that is transformative. Our season long guest is Rory Noland and we will be working with his book, Transforming Worship: Planning and Leading Sunday Services as If Spiritual Formation Mattered. In addition to Ruth and Rory, we will also be bringing other guests into the conversations about worship with spiritual formation at its core. This season is for all who worship, not just pastors and leaders who plan the weekly services! In today's episode Aaron Niequist joins Ruth and Rory to discuss the practices that make up Transforming Worship. They discuss how Covid revealed just how little participation was required in most church services, the temptation leaders face to create emotional experiences rather than allow space for the Holy Spirit to do its work, and what's wrong with how most of us pray in worship settings. This conversation is full of thoughtful dialogue and practical advice. Aaron Niequist is a liturgist, writer, and pastor who recently graduated from General Theological Seminary in NYC. After leading worship at Mars Hill Church (Grand Rapids, MI) and Willow Creek Church (Barrington, IL), he created A New Liturgy - a collection of modern liturgical worship recordings. He then curated a discipleship-focused, formational, ecumenical, practice-based community at Willow Creek called “The Practice”. Aaron released a book called The Eternal Current: How a Practice-based Faith can Save us from Drowning, and continues to create resources to help others flesh it out. He currently serves at St Peter's Episcopal Church in Chelsea and helps lead Pastors, Priests and Guides retreats around the country. The best part of his life is his wife Shauna, and their sons Henry and William. Aaronniequist.com Rory Noland is the director of Heart of the Artist Ministries, an organization dedicated to serving artists in the church. He mentors worship leaders, speaks at churches and conferences, leads retreats for artists, and consults with churches in the areas of worship and the arts. Rory is also a trained spiritual director, a published songwriter and has authored five books, including the best-seller, The Heart of the Artist: A Character-Building Guide For You and Your Ministry Team. Rory earned a Doctoral Degree from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. He was part of TC2 and led worship for the The Transforming Center for fifteen years. Comparing the way Jesus lived with the Church today can be pretty confusing. It can be hard to find your place among so many differing ideologies and competing viewpoints. In this episode, we are breaking down what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus in a divided world.Join us today on the Lasting Change Podcast, where we're talking with Aaron Niequist, a liturgist, writer, and pastor who recently graduated from General Theological Seminary in NYC. What if the modern worship experience is incomplete? What if how we lead worship and what we include in our services is leaving our church malnourished? What if we aren't giving them the Biblical language and experiences they need to successfully navigate life as a believer? Can we do better? If so, what should our worship services look like? What elements should they include? These are all the questions I explore with Aaron Niequist, author of The Eternal Current and facilitator of the Pastors, Priests, and Guides retreats. I hope this conversation gets you thinking. Please share with your pastor and any worship leaders you think need to hear it. Herzlich Willkommen, Steve Kennedy Henkel! Aaron Niequist is a liturgist, writer and pastor currently living in NYC. Having led worship at Mars Hill, and Willow Creek, Aaron has created A New Liturgy, written The Eternal Current, and leads the Pastors, Priests and Guides Retreat. Aaron and I talk about his movement from being an evangelical megachurch worship leader to becoming more oriented towards liturgy and practice. We talk about bringing about change in churches, and worship services in particular. Building a worship service with an eye towards a formative journey. Liturgy as building a muscle of spiritual development. And moving to a place where we transcend and include our faith heritage. I've admired Aaron Niequist and studied his perspective for quite some time. When the world started to fall apart I leaned in especially close. The Lord seems to have gifted Aaron in a lot of ways— teacher, musician, writer— but in my opinion, most especially as a sage in times of crisis. This episode is about his own time of crisis and what he learned was the only way through. Aaron Niequist has been to the top of the evangelical mountain and has experienced first hand the goodness and the toxicity and the pain that is often a byproduct of that world. He's come out of the belly of the evangelical beast without the bitterness and cynicism that many of us fall victim to. He doesn't want to label himself an Ex-vangelical. He's dreaming of living in and creating spiritual places and practices that are a convergence of the best of a number of Christian traditions, and it's beautiful. Episode 2 asked “Is God a dude?” This episode asks “Does God live on a cloud somewhere far away?” And I can't imagine a better guide to help us explore these questions than Diana Butler Bass. In her words, the first line of The Lord's Prayer “explodes” many of our concepts of God...inviting us into a wider and more beautiful space. At the end, Aaron Niequist teaches a new practice—creatively titled “My crazy, made up, underwater coffee shop practice”. May we learn to find God's presence everywhere.
In a season of pandemic and social tumult, we are spending the next 9 episodes exploring The Lord's Prayer and learning to put it into practice. One line per episode. A short conversation and a tangible practice. In this episode, Aaron Niequist shares the invitation of this historic prayer, and debuts the new song from A New Liturgy No 8: The Lord's Prayer. Please join us as the journey begins.
Aaron shares a personal experience from the week, reflecting on ways that quarantine has turned his focus overly inward. After telling the story of writing the song “Changed” for the Mars Hill community, he invites us into a short “blessed to be a blessing” liturgy. Join us as we pray for (and seek to serve) our neighbors, family, enemies, and world.

Unless we find concrete ways to weep over the brokenness, we will often use the brokenness to break others. Or ourselves. Lament provides a healing third way to engage the sorrow without exporting it. In this episode, Aaron Niequist invites us into this historic spiritual practice. Carried by Jenna Perinne's nine steps of lament, David Gungor's singing, and a whole team of collaborators, you will experience a liturgy of lament, and you'll be empowered to create your own. For such a time as this.
