Nutrition is actually a really simple topic but many folks seem to make it way more complicated than necessary. Like with most things, it's important to have the basics in place before you start trying to get clever. We are all guilty of this, including me, and I'm fortunate that on a regular basis I get to chat with an expert on a topic who brings me back to reality. With nutrition, what we need is an expert who can translate the scientific data and then cut through the marketing B/S to give us some simple pointers. That sounds like a job for a straight-talking Yorkshireman! Luckily we have Nigel Mitchell on hand to help. Nigel was the nutritional game changer who worked with team GB cyclists in the early 2000s and after that with Team Sky. It's a pleasure to have another Yorkshireman on the show to discuss: Injecting vitamins for recovery in pro cycling Teaching Geraint Thomas & Luke Rowe to cook Even vegan food can be rubbish Making your own sourdough bread, and buying flour directly from the mill Focussing on food quality Real barriers to eating healthily Nigel's simple tips to eat better   Nigel doesn't really do social media but he's written some really good books about nutrition for cyclists: Fuelling the cycling revolution  The plant based Cyclist The Cyclists Cookbook    As for other book recommendations of course as a good Yorkshireman, he recommends  Relentless: Secrets of the Sporting Elite by Alistair Brownlee To download your FREE 4-week mobility plan, please click here. We're delighted to welcome Nigel Mitchell onto this week's 33Fuel podcast. Nigel was head of nutrition at Team GB cycling and Team Sky before moving to his current role as head of nutrition at Team EF Education First pro cycling team. Nigel has devised the fuelling strategies for some of the world's best endurance athletes and his riders have won Grand Tours and Olympic medals, so we're thrilled to speak with him about performance nutrition. This conversation explores the performance potential of a plant-based diet. We love that Nigel isn't dogmatic about this topic – he's certainly not a raging vegan and firmly believes balance is required. In his day job, Nigel assesses nutritional strategies with a scientific, evidence-based head on his shoulders. So, if you want to improve your diet and incorporate more plant-based nutrition without any compromise in performance, this interview is for you! Adam Hansen of Lotto-Soudal follows a plant-based diet. Being lactose intolerant he cut out dairy products years ago and stopped eating meat a couple of seasons back. But is a meat-free diet compatible with the rigours of professional cycling? We hear Hansen talk about his reasons for following a vegan diet, how he feels and whether it's difficult to get the food he needs when he's at a grand tour and his team doesn't have its chef. Sports nutritionist Nigel Mitchell, who works with the EF Education First team and is writing a book about plant-based diets for cyclists, thinks that more professional riders will cut meat from their diets for a host of reasons. And while Hansen may be unusual in that he's a vegan, the peloton has seen plenty of vegetarian riders in the past and in 2000 an entirely vegetarian team, Linda McCartney Foods, rode the Giro d'Italia without touching 'even a slice of prosciutto'. Kilometre 0 is supported by Hansgrohe.

The Vuelta a España had its first uphill finish at Caminito del Rey, where a familiar face summoned all his experience to win the stage. The red jersey changed shoulders too. In this episode, Lionel Birnie and Fran Reyes enjoy the view of the Andalucian hills as they recap the day’s events. We also hear from Daniel Friebe on the early clues from an aggressive day’s racing. We hear from the Belgian Laurens De Plus, who almost sprung a surprise at the finish before being overtaken by Michal Kwiatkowski and stage winner Alejandro Valverde in sight of the line, and from Wilco Kelderman, who was fourth overall last year, about his fine start to the race. After a warm couple of days, the temperatures show no sign of dropping any time soon, so we asked EF Education First’s Nigel Mitchell how the teams help their riders cope with the heat.
