RECESS: Surviving a Zambezi Hippo Attack - Juliet Starrett's Extreme Whitewater World Championship Story

The Ready State Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2026 64:36

Juliet and I have told pieces of this story over the years, but we've never sat down and told the whole thing from the beginning. This episode, I'm turning the tables and interviewing Juliet, because the full arc of how she ended up getting launched twelve feet into the air by a hippo on the Zambezi River is too good to tell any other way.It starts in the late 1990s, when Juliet was a D1 rower turned wilderness river guide in California: fit, competent on Class IV water, and completely unaware that a tryout on the Kern River was about to drop her onto one of the most storied women's extreme whitewater teams in the world. We're talking Kelly Califadich, Julie Munger, Beth Rippins, Sue Norman, Brooke Winger, Rebecca Rusch: true legends of the sport. Juliet was the youngest, the least experienced, and by Rebecca's nickname for her, the MEAT in the middle of the boat. What she had was athletic horsepower, the right mindset, and no real concept yet of what she'd signed up for.Winning nationals meant an all-expenses-paid trip to the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe for the 1997 World Championships. Two weeks of daily training in the Batoka Gorge: daily flips in Class V rapids, giardia, massive crocodiles between rapids, and a hundred-degree grueling hike in and out of the canyon every single day. Followed by a race they won. Then, because they'd budgeted a full month in-country, the team tacked on a five-day canoe safari at Mana Pools, Juliet's mom Janet included. Flat water. Wildlife. A chance to decompress.Emphasis on WILDlife. What Juliet describes about the moment of the hippo attack (the sound, the air, looking down into the open mouth of a four-thousand-pound animal) is something I still think about. And what she did in the seconds after hitting the water is the reason she's here to tell it.What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhat it actually took to make a women's extreme whitewater World Championship team in the late 1990s — and why the word "extreme" matteredHow high-volume rivers like the Zambezi differ from the Class IV whitewater most people have experienced, and why that gap is bigger than it soundsWhat two weeks of daily training in the Batoka Gorge looks like: the hike in, the carnage, the giardia, and what finally made the flipping stopWhy hippos kill more people in Africa than almost any other large animal — and what makes their attacks so difficult to surviveWhat Juliet's guide told the team in the safety talk before the canoe safari, and why the locals already knew not to be thereThe split-second decision Juliet made in the water after the attack — and why years of river guiding made the differenceWhy a lifetime of athletic competition and high-stakes environments still didn't prepare Juliet for this particular kind of fearWhat "primal terror" actually feels like, and how it's different from the adrenaline fear of running a dangerous rapidKey Highlights: (00:00) Kelly sets up the episode: an interview with Juliet about a story that shaped their life together(00:45) How they met at the Extreme Whitewater World Championships in Chile, including Kelly's infamous Class V swim(01:53) What made this sport extreme: Camel Cigarette sponsorships, helicopter carnage footage, and Class V rivers worldwide(04:28) Juliet's four World Championship venues: the Zambezi, Reventazon, Orange River, and Futaleufú(06:26) The legendary women's team: Kalafatich, Munger, Rippins, Norman, and Rebecca Rusch(09:07) Juliet's origin story: D1 rowing at Berkeley, chasing a tan, and becoming a wilderness river guide(12:01) The tryout on the Kern River and the Monday phone call that changed her life(15:08) Winning nationals means Zimbabwe: understanding high-volume rivers for the first time(21:18) Two weeks in the Batoka Gorge: daily flips, giardia, crocodiles, and finding the Nyaminyami(29:42) Winning the World Championship and the greatest French fries of Juliet's life(32:42) The Ready State Mobility Coach(32:47) The canoe safari plan: five days on the lower Zambezi at Mana Pools, with Janet, Juliet's Mom(36:31) Gary's safety talk: machetes, three guns, hippos, crocs, lions, and snakes(38:31) Days one and two on the river: crocodile wakes, hippo pods, and the Jumanji paddle bang(41:57) Hippo City or Hippo Bronx: the democratic vote that nearly cost Juliet her life(45:40) The attack: a sound like a gunshot, launched 12 feet into the air, and swimming for their lives(50:17) Stranded on a Cape Buffalo island, Tupperware canoe repair, and three silent days to the takeout(57:13) Juliet can't be beat at the "share an interesting fact" ice-breaker game(58:24) Primal fear and why Juliet will never do a canoe safari again(59:36) Reacting under extreme pressure, not freezing in the moment(1:02:33) Hippo shrine

Rebecca is one of the most inspiring people on the planet. She is a true leader in sport, performance, mindset, and philanthropy. There are very few people who accomplish what Rebecca has and still strive to do more in the space - most specifically in giving back to those around her. In this episode we explore why motivation shows up after you act instead of before it, how the right amount of stress builds growth while too much burns you out, and what happens when training data starts running your life instead of supporting it. We discuss the four types of motivation, the tools that pull you out of a demotivated spiral, and the launch of our Summer Streak Challenge, a joint habits challenge between our coaching business, Tactic Functional Fitness, and the Be Good Foundation. Do you ever get those wild ideas about running a river in a unique way, but they just stay ideas, and you kinda always wish you had followed through?  This episode is about an idea that became a reality.  In November of 2001, 3 people zipped up their drysuits, pulled on their swim fins, strapped their dry bags to river boards, and slid into the Colorado River beginning a 300 mile trip where river boards were their only water craft.  Kelley Kalafatich, Julie Munger and Rebecca Rusch floated, swam, kicked and paddled their way in and down the Colorado River, successfully and joyfully, and they have a film documenting this story.  The film has just published and they joined The River Radius to have a reunion of sorts and tell their river boarding story 25 years later.  THE FILM:  "Three Women, Three Hundred Miles: Introduction by Meryl Streep"Producer: Carr CliftonGUESTSKelley Kalafatich TEDXKelley Kalafatich IRFJulie MungerRebecca Rusch websiteInstagramFacebookYoutube SPONSORDenver Area Nissan Dealers@nissanusa EPISODE THUMBNAIL IMAGECarr Clifton ARTICLES"Grand Adventure: River Boarding the Colorado""Three Women, 300 Miles"RIVER BOARDCarlson River Board at NRSChurchhill Swimfins  THE RIVER RADIUSWebsiteRunoff signup (episode newsletter)InstagramFacebookApple PodcastSpotifyLink Tree

OVERVIEWAnaerobic capacity is the work you can do above your lactate threshold. Another term for it is Functional Reserve Capacity (FRC), and it acts like a battery that contains a finite amount of energy that runs out quickly and must be recharged before a subsequent use. FRC is your high-intensity, explosive power for winning sprints, creating breakaways, closing gaps, and riding competitors off your wheel. In the final episode in this series with WKO Data Leader and Coach Tim Cusick, Tim and CTS Coach Adam Pulford discuss what FRC is, how to train it, the consequences of focusing on FRC (you may have to sacrifice some FTP for it), and therefore when and how much FRC work to incorporate into your training plan.Topics Covered In This Episode:Definitions of anaerobic capacity and functional reserve capacity (FRC)Anaerobic Capacity adaptation from 1-2 weeks of trainingAnaerobic Capacity adaptation from 2-5 weeks of trainingWhy FRC training intensities must be SUPER HARD!Recommended interval workouts for FRC trainingWhen to incorporate FRC workouts into your trainingResourcesTim at Basecamp: https://www.joinbasecamp.com/tim-cusick Tim on IG https://www.instagram.com/tim.cusick_coach/Stress vs Strain: Difference Between Stress and Strain - GeeksforGeeks https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/physics/difference-between-stress-and-strain/Guest Bio:Tim Cusick is a world-class cycling coach, a leader in data analytics for endurance sports, an educator, and an innovative business leader. Every year, the Flint Hills of Kansas call Rachel Wills back to Unbound XL. At 350 miles, the race is a test of endurance: relentless heat, drivetrain-clogging mud, a horizon that stretches on forever, and a thousand sharp, punchy climbs that chip away at you one by one.Rachel has lined up in five times: finished four, scratched once. And with each ride, she's uncovered a new experience. For her, Unbound XL has become so much more than a race. It's become a ritual. A way of grounding herself in place, community, and the kind of effort that reveals something new every time.In this episode, Rachel reflects on what's kept her coming back and how the Flint Hills have shaped her over time. She shares about the power of all women's spaces like Velocio // Exploro, lessons from big days in the saddle, why tandem wheels are surprisingly great to follow, and the descending advice she picked up from Rebecca Rusch.Topics include:What makes Unbound XL so challenging (and so special)The emotional weight of scratching and coming backGrowth through repetition and ritualRiding with Velocio // Exploro and the power of a women's teamLetting go of racing for results—and finding something deeperFollow Rachel on Instagram: @rachelawills Follow Mel on Instagram: @melwwebbFollow Detours on Instagram: @detourscyclingFollow Albion on Instagram: @albion.cyclingUse code DETOURS15 to get 15% off your next order from AlbionIf you love this show please consider pledging your support to sustain producing this show: https://buymeacoffee.com/detourspodcast

There are guests whose stories are filled with incredible achievements. And then there are guests whose stories crack you open—with their heart, their humility, and their humanity.Today's guest, Rebecca Rusch, is all of the above.Rebecca is one of the world's most extraordinary endurance athletes—a 7-time World Champion, mountain bike hall-of-famer, best-selling author, Emmy Award winner, and activist. She has not only pushed herself to the physical edge through rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and multi-day adventure races like Eco-Challenge—she has also traveled to the emotional core of what it means to live fully, love deeply, and be good. You may know her from the acclaimed documentary Blood Road, which follows Rebecca's 1,800-kilometer mountain bike journey along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to locate the site where her father's plane went down during the Vietnam War. That quest wasn't just about closure—it was about connection, healing, and honoring the man who shaped her spirit. In this deeply moving episode of the Cracking Open podcast, we explore:✨ How the loss of her father at a young age ignited a lifelong search for meaning✨ What growing up with a single, hard-working mom taught her about strength and self-reliance✨ The power of curiosity, nature, and endurance to reveal who we really are✨ How a traumatic brain injury forced her to slow down—and reimagine what success looks like✨ Why “being good” matters so much more than being perfectWhat we didn't know when we scheduled this conversation was that Rebecca's beloved mom would pass away just one week before we recorded. And so what unfolds in this episode is not just an interview—it's a powerful reflection on how we live, how we love, and how we show up for the people who matter most.Rebecca's story is one of grit, grace, and growth. And at the heart of it all is a simple message from her father, who signed every letter home from Vietnam with the same two words: Be Good. It's a mantra that continues to guide her—and now, maybe, it will guide you too.
