An unusual episode of Dog Stars sees Chris and Mr Max out before sunset. The most exciting thing is the possibility of treats, but we also talk about eerie Noctilucent - night-shining - clouds, visible after sunset in the summer sky. These beautiful, mysterious apparitions are worth keeping an eye out for if the skies are clear - and we talk about the possible link to a nineteenth century volcano and the space shuttle. You can find out more about noctilucent clouds with the Sky at Night's Pete Lawrence here: https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/astrophotography/astrophoto-tips/photograph-motion-noctilucent-clouds/ and there's a beautiful image of them from the space station by Chris Hadfield https://www.universetoday.com/99606/noctilucent-clouds-imaged-by-astronaut-chris-hadfield/ [Since we got back, Chris learnt that 'the year with no summer' was due to another 19th century volcano, not Krakatoa. He apologies to Mr Max, and to you, for the error].

In December 2000, The Big Chill hosted one of the most memorable concerts I have had the pleasure to be involved with. Tom Middleton, our resident DJ through the years and now esteemed club and yoga session DJ, composer and sleep therapist, fulfilled an ambition. He got to score and perform two of the tracks from the seminal album 76:14 by Global Communication, his project at the time with Mark Pritchard. Tom invited me to play the DJ warm-up set for him, which I really enjoyed doing, along with Muffled Visions images on the night. The resulting mix 'Deep and Crisp and Even' has remained popular since its inception and already received several thousand downloads from a variety of sites. It's one of my most loved mixes and seems to suit a variety of occasions. To mark the anniversary two decades on, I have revisited the Deep and Crisp and Even mix I created for that iconic night and put visuals to it, something I have always wanted to do. Enforced lockdown here on Paros has given me a few days spare time to essentially create a film of slides around the mix (original photos by myself as well as found footage on the web). It clocks in at 62 minutes, a sound and vision scape through choral, classical, electronica, piano music and more. The full mix is available on Campfire's Vimeo channel after its premiere at the World Harmony event over Winter Solstice 2020. In this promo Firecast, I talk about the emotional resonance that the mix holds for me and offer a few thoughts on each track. I hope you enjoy it.

“When the revolution comes, it will start here” That’s a quote from the Guardian’s magazine’s 'Let’s Move to…' feature about Frome, the independent-minded Somerset market town that is in the spotlight. In the latest firecast from Campfire Convention, Pete Lawrence (a recently inducted Froomie) renews acquaintances with writer Crysse Morrison, one of the first people he met in Frome, who has spent months putting together a definitive and enormously entertaining book about the town’s history, heritage, the people that have made it what it is and it’s passion for non-conformist creativity which comes in many shapes and sizes. Everywhere you look, it would seem, the town seems to be in the spotlight with Harpers Bazaar describing it as “the UK’s most stylish town” and the Sunday Times suggesting the town has reinvented itself as “an artsy, foodie hipster haven” Local writer from Devizes Darren Warrow, sees 'Funky freewheeling Frome’ s organised community as “creating a distinctiveness and liberal attitude which makes Brighton look like North Korea". Frome is a vibrant place to live and Crysse's new book ‘Frome Unzipped’ is its essential guide. Listen up!

From Glastonbury to The End Of The Road, Summer festivals continue to colonise the countryside. But how do people pull together such enormous events year after year? In our 2017 Summer Festivals Special, Olly meets Pete Lawrence, co-founder of The Big Chill, which went from being a low-key ‘festival in a club’ for 150 people in Islington to an massive outdoor happening, taking over huge venues across Britain, with acts including Lily Allen, The Proclaimers, Basement Jaxx, and Leonard Cohen. How do you choose the perfect location for your booming event? How can you maintain counter-culture ethics whilst wooing corporate sponsors? And how can you keep the Police on-side when so many attendees are doing drugs? Pete - now founder of campfireconvention.uk - reveals all... Meanwhile, in this week’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart - fresh from sitting near Kate Adie at a train station - previews the Summer festivals you’ve never heard of, but should get tickets for NOW. In his top three are G!, in the Faroe Islands; the Archstoyanie Land Art Festival, 200 km southwest of Moscow; and, closer to home, the Brainchild festival, a ‘DIY and volunteer-led festival’ in East Sussex. Also, he explains why every festivalgoer needs a BioLite camping stove and Minipresso portable espresso machine, and receives an exciting invitation to Camp Bestival as part of his quest to become a true trends insider. Twenty years ago The Big Chill festival pioneered the concept of the boutique festival. Helen Mark meets founder Pete Lawrence as he returns to the magical Llanthony Valley where the first festival was staged. Together they explore the history of this unique landscape which has attracted artists and seekers of solitude since the 13th Century. The imposing ruins of Llanthony Priory have been painted by Turner and it is here where Pete first decided to hold an event characterised by music in keeping with the surroundings. Just down the road is the Maes-Y-Beran camping ground where the event took place, 500 music lovers congregated on Wyndham Morgan's farm in 1995 and Ariane Morgan has fond memories of that time. Helen takes Pete to remember that day along with some of the musicians and festival goers who were there.
