This week we are talking with Seetha and Vasilis, life partners and co-owners of Curated Greece. Seetha grew up in the United States, living in several major cities and then Canada before moving to Southern France for Grad School. Vasilis grew up in Greece, learning French and when he decided it was time to put his skills to the test, he moved to Southern France for Grad School. Seetha and Vasilis met while working on their MBAs. After 6 years, the couple moved back to Greece and found the demand for the real side of Greece along the way. A few planned trips for family members and Curated Greece was born. Seetha tells us about how their partnerships with travel advisors was the real push to start a tour operator in Greece that truly focuses on the experiential side of travel. Seetha and Vasilis share their favorite off-the-beaten path destinations that hold the iconic charm of Greeks Islands with less crowds, more authenticity and some even boasting year round travel. Follow along as we hear of Naxos, Paros, Crete and fall more in love with Greece every second. Naxos, where Vasilis has roots, is 1 hour and 30 minutes by ferry to Santorini and is home to hiking, history, local cuisine and our hosts' favorite thing… Locally produced cheese. Paros is a perfect mixture of Paros and Mykonos with its authentic Greek side AND its cosmopolitan side. Here you will find the same “small town” charm as Naxos with a taste of the nightlife you might find in Mykonos, though less crowded. Day trips are available to the neighboring Antiparos, with ferries running every half hour. Our guests rave about the island of Crete. “A whole country of its own.” Crete has 4 vastly different regions and is a destination that you will always find new experiences at, no matter how many times you visit. Today on The Intrepid Traveler:Meet Vasilis and Seetha, and learn how they both found their way to Southern FranceThe creation of Curated Greece and how connections with travel advisors fueled this companyHear about some less popular Greek Islands with have an equal amount of iconic Greecian charm to offer A little overview of travel times between islands and the logistics of how you might include Santorini or Mykonos in the same tripHow each island is its own unique destinations and what you can expect from Naxos, Paros and CreteAn overview of the vibes of each different destination and who might like to travel there. A teaser for a future discussion with Seetha and Vasilis about mainland Greece. Connect with the guest:Linked in: Curated GreeceThanks for tuning in!  Thanks for joining us on today's episode of The Intrepid Traveler podcast! Dimitra Skandali grew up on Paros, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. She says the island has shaped the way she sees the world. Dimitra combines traditional fiber arts like crochet, embroidery, and weaving with sea grasses and beach trash as a way to focus attention on the ocean and the environmental issues that impact its health and sustainability. While her work is rooted in her relationship with the Aegean Sea, Dimitra also has ties to the Pacific Ocean, having spent almost a decade in California. By using beach trash and natural materials she explores sustainability and other environmental issues like ocean pollution. Her installations, which have been curated in more than 90 solo and group exhibitions worldwide, allude to increasing environmental risks alongside human migrations and struggles with identity.

I know a lot of you also left your home town, or even home country, to move out in the world and change your dream, whatever that might be. I guess we all have reasons for leaving, or running away. A big reason for me was that growing up, I never felt like I had people around me who I actually looked up to. I didn't see an adult person doing anything impressive to me. No one who lived in a way that made me excited to also grow up and take on life. I saw adults around me who were uninspired and uninspiring. They were living lives that I did not want to take on. Young as I was, I fled to the books. In books I found inspiring breathtaking extraordinary people, real and fictional, but who were so defined, in a way. Even if it was a quiet small poet, like, I discovered the American poet jack Gilbert and loved his poems but even more the fact that he fled the limelight in America when he became a little bit famous and moved to Europe and lived in kind of random hidden places, quietly, simply, just writing. He lived on a small island in Greece called Paros, where I actually later on went to spend a few weeks myself. He lived in Denmark and Germany, and just quietly wandered and wrote. I was inspired by that. What a wonderful way to live. Of course I also discovered Jack Kerouac. Reading On The Road was my ticket out in the world. You can leave and live on the road and not chase material success but float from experience to experience and live with no belonging and just soak up the blue sky???? WHAT? It was mind blowing. I was in awe. .... ... A great leader will be aware of his or her own strengths and understand when they are useful and when they are not useful. The dark side of their strengths will show when those strengths are used in the wrong context. So let's say again this new leader took on his or her team with the same energy and independence and stubbornness as he or she did while climbing up to that position. He or she would then become a very harsh, critical, judgmental leader. That's when strengths become weaknesses. Another example, in my own life. My strengths are pretty similar to this example. I'm independent, I don't need anybody to make things happens. I make things happen myself. I believe in my own ability to learn and figure thing out and I count on myself to always make it work. I believe these are strengths, that I am proud of. But let's place me in a context of a relationship. And let's place those strengths inside of a relationship, and I say to my person: I don't need anyone. I don't need anyone or anything to make myself happy and to build my life and I can do this all on my own. Yeah— Strengths used in the wrong context will become your weaknesses. So what I have learned, a huge huge game change of a lesson, is that my strongest strengths, need to be my biggest awareness point, because let's place me in that relationship, knowing I am independent and strong and don't really need this person. I need to be aware of how I let those strengths shine through. I don't mean suppress them, I need turn them around. How can I instead, turn them into terms like: Stability. You can count on me. Loyalty. I will not let you down. I got your back, just like I have mine. If things get rough, you can count on me to not give up. Because I never give up. See, if I can learn to be aware of my strengths, and learn to be aware and conscious of how I communicate them in certain context, they can stay strengths. But if I am unaware of them, they will become my weaknesses. Being independent inside of relationship. I am still using my strong, independent never-giving-up attitude, but in a gentler way. Saying, “I'm not giving up on you and or me or this. You can count on me.” What are your strengths? If you would ask your friends, what do you think they would say? Then ask yourself, in what context, if you're being really honest to yoursel

I can't quite believe it. For two years Brian has been secretly planning this mega trip to Europe. And now it's almost over. Europe has been every bit as wonderful as we hoped it would be. Just gorgeous. In case you're new to the show, let me give you a quick recap of what the past five months have looked like. The things you might have missed. We picked up a vintage car from the UK in May (that Brian purchased off the internet while he was still in New Zealand) We drove through Belgium, France, and Italy and then got a ferry to Greece where we picked our kids up from Athens and sailed to the Greek Island of Paros for a month. The car had lots of niggly problems, but we won't go into that now. Bri feels fragile enough as it is. The kids flew from Greece back to the UK, and we drove back through Europe to England. The car had some troubles. It blew up. I know that Brian will say that it didn't, but he's lying. It did. We waited for the car to be fixed, visited lots of family members and then drove back to Tuscany to housesit for six weeks. We looked after a sweet little cat in a wonderful house overlooking the Mediterranean in the town of Porto Santo Stefano. It was divine. If you haven't yet signed up to be a housesitter, then you want your head reading. It's brill. We drove back from Italy, over the French Alpes and are now sitting in our car outside an Airbnb in Calais making this podcast for you. Tomorrow we will cross the border of France and return to England. The Queen has died, a close family member is not well, and if we can't sell the car in the next two weeks, then we stand to lose twenty grand. Oh, and it looks as though we will have to enter Thailand illegally. Other than that everything is hunky dory. Would I be wrong in guessing that at some time in your life you've dreamed of spending a few glorious weeks in Greece with your family? An idyllic Greek Island vacation. Have you spent time (sometimes hours) drooling at pictures on the internet of golden sand beaches and flat-roofed white houses that can only be found on an island in Greece somewhere in the middle of the Agean Sea? You and me both. I can't tell you how many times I have typed into Goggle 'what does it cost to spend a month on the Greek Island of Paros', only to be forced towards twenty million ads that never give me a straightforward answer. Taking a Greek Island Vacation As it happens, I am currently on holiday in Greece. I'm here with my husband and two young adult kids (notice how I called them 'young adults''? I have to do that. It's the law in our house. They don't talk to me for a week if they find out I've been calling them kids on the interweb).   And as I've been paying for things I've been clocking the price so that I can report back to you with prices. So here we are. Brian and I. Your knights in Greek togas. Able and willing to share with you the exact cost of what a month in Greece will set you back. How we came to be in Greece for a month. Brian (my husband) and I have left our life in New Zealand and are currently travelling around Europe for three months. We bought a classic Peugeot 205 and we have driven it from England to Greece (where we have been for the last three weeks). This was all planned by Brian in Lockdown. While I was busy bleaching the cups.  In this podcast episode, we share with you the exact cost of things in Greece. Including what a nice jug of wine will set you back. I always remember the important things. In This Week's Show Brian and I Discuss: Cost of accommodation in Paros, Greece Cost of a nice breakfast Cost of a budget breakfast Cost of wine in Greece Cost of mobile data (very important if you have a location-independent job like us) Cost of dinner for two Cost of public transport Things to note: All prices are in Euros. At the time of writing this post 1 Euro = $1.05. 1.66 NZD.  .86 pence Flights from New Zealand to Greece cost us  $1900 NZD per person return. This was with Emirates. She uses a different way of doing something familiar, in this case a different way to travel.  You will soon recognize the alignment to the principles of Untourism and might even see small businesses doing sustainability travel well on her website.  So while riding up the escalator at Travel Con and I shared I had a podcast and she and I exchanged business cards I immediately made a note to follow up with her.   Ketti Wilhelm is a former freelance travel writer and the founder of TiltedMap.com, which is a blog about sustainability, travel, and zero-waste. She left Montana after college, with a job teaching English to 300 university students in China, and a side-hustle as a freelance magazine writer… and just one word of Mandarin and no background in education. She determined her husband was the right partner after two months living in a minivan and many other adventures.  Feeling left out of conversations with her husband's friends (who is from Italy) she was determined to learn Italian.  She received her master's degree in Sustainable Business and Energy from Bocconi University, in Milan, Italy and has lived in China, Italy, and France.  She has since returned to the US and back to her roots in writing.  Ketti Wilhelm of Tilted Map, welcome to Ordinary Sherpa.   Key Takeaways Ketti took the job as a tool to get to the next country.  Having the job first simplified the decision of where to move and offered a built in community.  There is a link to an article on her blog  [11 strategies from a serial expat] Ketti initially focused on sustainability from the social aspect perspective which is essential to the sustainable travel efforts.   Where you spend your money matters When traveling, make an effort to live a similar lifestyle to what you would at home.  The intent is to do better, not be perfect.  Simple habit changes over time drastically improve the curve.   Carbon reduction is the process where an organization directly reduces greenhouse gas emissions through efficiencies while carbon offset is a trade-off, where companies get credit for funding external projects that reduce emissions. One example of an offset program is  planting trees.   Some ways individuals can reduce their carbon footprint is to eat less meat, reduce single use plastics by using shampoo bars or seeking hotels that offer refillable dispensers over small short term use sample size toiletries. Where you go is less critical than how you act when you get there.  Ketti started her blog to showcase that sustainable travel is more than ecolodges and thatched roof accommodations.  Ketti shared an example of a hotel in the Mississippi delta region who was doing many things right.  Likewise on the Paros in the Greek Islands it was more socially acceptable to have the bartender fill her waterbottle with tap water versus suggesting she buy a single use bottle of water.   The Lazy guide to more sustainable travel is a blog post (linked below) can help determine what to look for when making travel decisions with brands.  One example is a B Corp certification which means a company has a triple bottom line (financial, social, and environmental). Plastic free July is an initiative of the zero waste movement to encourage people to notice their use patterns and make an effort to reduce plastic use and consumption.   It is interesting to me that many of the principles that she discussed overlap with similar principles of minimalism and untourism, a term I use to travel differently and support local businesses.  If you were inspired by this episode to do better in some way, then let's play show and tell.  Post on Instagram and tag @ordinarysherpa, send me an email or DM, or better yet leave a written review.   Before I sign off I have a quick update on the podcast.  I am spending some intentional time with my family adventuring a considerable amount this summer.  I want to model the type of lifestyle I often talk about on the show.  I have pre-recorded several episodes throughout June & July so there will still be episodes dropping each Wednesday, however I am also including a few Best of replays from the early days of the podcast, perhaps some you haven't had the chance to listen to.  I have been aspiring to do less and this summer is a great opportunity to slow down and be present.  I will periodically be checking email but generally you might see a little less.  If you would like to do a deeper dive on our lifestyle design and get ready for fall you might appreciate reading my book: Beyond Normal a field guide to embrace adventure, explore the wilderness and design an extraordinary life with kids.  It goes great while camping, sitting next to a babbling brook, or spending some simple time outdoors this summer.  You can find the links to purchase on the homepage of my website: Ordinarysherpa.com Until next week, I look forward to hearing all about your adventures and tips you are practicing to do better.   To Connect with or follow Ketti Wilhelm of Tilted Map Website: https://www.tiltedmap.com/ Instagram: @TiltedMap https://www.instagram.com/tiltedmap/ Facebook: @TiltedMap https://www.facebook.com/tiltedmap/   Resources referenced in this post:  The Lazy Guide to More Sustainable Travel [Simple Tips & Resources] https://www.tiltedmap.com/easy-sustainable-travel-guide/  Want to Live Abroad [11 strategies from a serial expat] https://www.tiltedmap.com/how-to-move-abroad/

The surviving fragments of his work show him to have been a metrical innovator of the highest ability.Archilochus's father was Telesicles, a wealthy Parian who founded a colony on the island of Thasos. Archilochus lived on both Paros and Thasos. Fragments of his poetry mention the solar eclipse of April 6, 648 BCE, and the wealth of the Lydian king Gyges (c. 680–645 BCE). The details of Archilochus's life, in the ancient biographical tradition, are derived for the most part from his poems—an unreliable source because the events he described may have been fictitious or may have involved imaginary personae or ritual situations.Modern discoveries, however, have supported the picture given in the poetry. Two inscriptions dedicated to Archilochus were discovered in a sacred area on Paros; they are named, after the men who dedicated them, the Mnesiepes inscription (3rd century BCE) and the Sosthenes inscription (1st century BCE). Archilochus's self-presentation was taken seriously as early as the late 5th century BCE by the Athenian politician and intellectual Critias, who denounced him for presenting himself as the impoverished, quarrelsome, foul-mouthed, lascivious son of a slave woman. Some scholars feel that the Archilochus portrayed in his poems is too scurrilous to be real.Archilochus probably served as a soldier. According to ancient tradition, he fought against Thracians on the mainland near Thasos and died when the Thasians were fighting against soldiers from the island of Naxos. In one famous poem, Archilochus tells, without embarrassment or regret, of throwing his shield away in battle. (“I saved my life. What do I care about my shield? The hell with it! I'll buy another just as good.”) The motif of the abandoned shield appears again in the lyric poems of Alcaeus and Anacreon, in a parody by Aristophanes (Peace), and in a learned variation by the Latin poet Horace (Carmina).Although the truth is difficult to discern with certainty from the poems and other evidence, Archilochus may have been disreputable. He was particularly famous in antiquity for his sharp satire and ferocious invective. It was said that a man named Lycambes betrothed his daughter Neobule to the poet and then later withdrew the plan. In a papyrus fragment published in 1974 (the “Cologne Epode”)—the longest surviving piece of Archilochus's poetry—a man, who is apparently the poet himself, tells in alternately explicit and hinting language how he seduced the sister of Neobule after having crudely rejected Neobule herself. According to the ancient accounts, Lycambes and his daughters committed suicide, shamed by the poet's fierce mocking.Archilochus was the first known Greek poet to employ the elegiac couplet and various iambic and trochaic metres, ranging from dimeter to tetrameter, as well as epodes, lyric metres, and asinarteta (a mixture of different metres). He was a master of the Greek language, moving from Homeric formulas to the language of daily life in a few lines. He was the first European author to make personal experiences and feelings the main subject of his poems: the controlled use of the personal voice in his verse marks a distinct departure from other surviving Greek verse, which is typically more formulaic and heroic. For his technical accomplishments Archilochus was much admired by later poets, such as Horace, but there was also severe criticism, especially of a moralistic character, by writers such as the poet Pindar (5th century BCE).From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Archilochus-Greek-author. For more information about Archilochus:“Archilochus”: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2008.01.0480%3Avolume%3D2%3Atext%3D21“Archilochus: A poet and a mercenary?”: https://www.ancientworldmagazine.com/articles/archilochus-poet-mercenary/

About the guestInspired by sacred geometry, Jordann Wine draws on classical forms and patterns in her work to reference mathematical concepts that reflect the wonders of the universe. Working with the golden ratio, fractals, and gradients these geometric abstract paintings, drawings and murals connect to notions of deep space in time, as well as deep space found in meditation. Floating, falling, fading and unfolding patterns of triangles and circles mesmerize the viewer, evoking contemplation of the infinite. Seeking order out of chaos, and interrupting rigidity of order with slight imperfections in the repetition is central to the meditative nature of her practice and to the solace it intends to bring out in the hand-drawn imagery.  Along with her work in drawings, paintings and murals, Jordann has evolved her practice by introducing glitter. Glitter, commonly dismissed as an ordinary craft material, is elevated to a painterly standard as she foregrounds the material's inherent qualities of holding and releasing light. Making use of the medium's full range of iridescent, opaque, and translucent color qualities, she transforms the childish or garish reputation of glitter into a reflective cosmic field. Reflective surfaces instinctually remind people of water, the element most critical to survival. Glitter's shimmering surfaces, reminiscent of light hitting water, attracts the viewer into the work, evoking the appeal of both the movement of water as flow and the introspective quality of water as stillness. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from New York University; where she studied Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study and minored in Studio Art. She continued her education at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Paros, Greece. Currently, based in Washington, DC, she has had solo exhibitions at Honfleur Gallery, George Mason University, and Strathmore Arts Center, as well as many national and international group exhibitions.
