Throughout the summer we've been taking a look into the world of 'genre fiction' – the women who read it and the women who write it. In the latest of this series, we're going to discuss science fiction. Seen by some as 'a genre for men,' there are lots of women authors and readers who think otherwise. Bafta-nominated screenwriter and playwright, Moira Buffini, who's written The Dig and TV series Harlots, joins Nuala to discuss her debut science fiction novel, Songlight. Larissa Lai, science fiction novelist and professor at University of Toronto, with two novels shortlisted by the Otherwise Award joins Nuala to discuss the genre.Say She She is a female-led band based out of Brooklyn, New York led by Piya Malik Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown. Last year it was my great pleasure to speak at Carfest, a huge summer festival here in the UK where the health and wellbeing zone Spafest brought together many leading lights in the areas of holistic wellbeing, mindfulness and the general pursuit of happiness. And twas there that I met the force of nature that is Donna Easton. Donna is a Joyologist, a performer, a presenter and the creator of Joyology. A highly sought after speaker, Donna's work can be found on TV, radio and she has written for national press including Hello! magazine, Stylist and The Express newspaper. Donna helps individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses re-frame mindsets and shift how we show up each day to re-connect with the real 'us'. Donna has hosted stages and delivered talks at events across the UK, including Car Fest, Camp Bestival, Mind Body Spirit Festival, Latitude and MOVE IT and has delivered keynotes for organisations such as Google, MARS and Holland & Barrett. She helps people re-connect with themselves, find their joy and maximise success in their lives and career.Donna's challenging personal journey puts her life's mission in context. Childhood bullying, an eating disorder and overnight hair loss gave her a deep appreciation of what really matters in life. And this is manifest throughout her life and work as a parent and as a coach. After a pretty challenging 2023, I think we all need a bit more joy in our lives and I'm looking forward to hearing Donna's take on how to reconnect with our best selves through the power of Joyology. And of course I'm curious to learn about the Unlock Moments of remarkable clarity that shaped her own life's journey.--Donna Easton: https://mylifeshines.com/Donna Easton on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mylifeshines/ --The Unlock Moment podcast is brought to you by Dr Gary Crotaz, PhD. The sun is starting to peek it's head out and we are about to embark on festival season. With Shropshire being such a cool festival county, it seems fitting that we sit and discuss one of the biggest festivals of the year, Camp Bestival.Alex and Verity are joined by Bestival founder and world famous DJ, Rob Da Bank. There is not much that isn't covered in this interview. Starting off with how does one become a world famous DJ? How was life at BBC Radio One and how far do those relationships go? What are some of Rob's most memorable performances (both good and bad).Of course it is important to talk about the conception of Bestival, how just the right ingredients are blended together to make a perfect festival and why Shropshire/Staffordshire is the perfect spot for such an event. The Shrewsbury Biscuit will be at Camp Bestival. Verity will be there with mics and cameras to document such a fun event. Alex and Rob set out a series of missions for Verity to complete while she is there. If you need to be hooked up with a link for tickets for Camp Bestival it is right here. From the briefing we have here from Rob Da Bank himself, it sounds like it's going to be an epic weekend. Check it out - https://shropshire.campbestival.net/tickets/buy-tickets
Claire Hodgson is a theatre director who hates rules and who wants to make a difference to the world through the shows that she makes. I first met her last year at Camp Bestival, when she was coordinating the Guinness world record attempt for the largest number of simultaneous disco dancers!! 600 altogether - and they did it!!We talked about how Claire, her brother and her sister cleaned up on disco dancing medals as children and how she went on to found a company called Diverse City, and Extraordinary Bodies for circus artists. During lockdown she became a sea swimmer and last year she created a large-scale sea choreography he is just about to launch a theatre called SW!M in Swanage in Dorset. Her upcoming project is a musical called ‘Waldo's Circus of Magic & Terror' at the Bristol Old Vic. It is a new musical set in 1933 and is based based on true stories about how circuses smuggled people with disabilities out of Germany during WW2. Claire has a teenage daughter Scarlett who helped her coordinate the WhatsApp group for SW!M and who Claire feels very fortunate to have spent extra time with, because of lockdown.Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. On the latest Classic Album Sundays podcast, we step back to Camp Bestival from a few years ago when Nick Drake's producer Joe Boyd joined us to discuss ‘Five Leaves Left' in length with Colleen. Alongside Joe's production the album features Richard Thompson (of Fairport Convention) and Danny Thompson (of Pentangle) as well as the beautiful string arrangements of Robert Kirby. Despite being championed by John Peel, the album initially sold less than 6,000 copies. Now, over four decades since Drake's death, Five Leaves Left is seen as an iconic album in British Folk music and his songs are cited as an influence by Peter Buck of REM and Robert Smith of The Cure. I recorded this episode 3 hours after getting back from Camp Bestival, which might be a friendly family festival but one that still left me broken, dusty and sleep deprived from sleeping in a tent for four nights. So excuse a couple of unforced errors, an even more random selection of tracks than usual and forgetting to record the first minute or so! I opened with a couple of tracks from acts I saw over the weekend - Sister Sledge and Kool & The Gang, fitted in a few slow funky bubblers, a good few of my own and a couple of new promos. For the second hour I welcomed Wilson Frisk (AKA Craig Horsley) on to the show for a lovely guest mix. Craig has a show called Housebound which goes out every Wednesday 6-8pm UK on People's City Radio, and I was honoured to do a guest mix for his show just a few weeks back. It's worked out really nicely being able to return the favour and invite Wilson on so soon after. Expect high energy, hip-hop influenced vibes on this one. BPMs are pretty high, we've got lots of hip house and jackin stuff, and a nice bit of swagger to this mix. In this episode, I chat with Becky Burchell, a talented and inspiring Arts Producer and Curator who specializes in “Hopeism” - the idea that sharing stories of hope through the arts can help us to imagine and create a better future. Becky is the founder of CHANGE Festival, a new arts festival in the UK which she created as a platform for inspirational performance, music, discussion, and workshops that invited audiences to consider their own role in manifesting positive change. Becky has previously curated big-name festivals as an Arts Producer (like the UK's Bestival and Camp Bestival), creating areas and experiences across artforms from circus to carnival parades to spoken word. Becky has also worked with folk artist Sam Lee to produce the renowned Singing With Nightingale conservation event series, where musicians perform duets with wild nightingales in the woods. The World We Made premiered at CHANGE Festival 2019 and was a groundbreaking new play that Becky envisaged and produced, set in 2050, and inspired by pioneering environmentalist Jonathon Porritt's book of the same name. Becky is also a Fellow of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity, an internationally renowned research centre at the University of Surrey. Fellows explore what prosperity can mean in a world of environmental, social, and economic limits. we talk about how the arts can play a vital role in supporting all of us to be innovative, courageous, and caring in the ways we create change both within our own lives and collectively. I recorded this episode live about 2 hours after getting back from Camp Bestival, my first festival in exactly two years. I was absolutely exhausted so I'm not at my chattiest (probably a good thing!), but I decided to open the show with the absolute banger that is The Spirit by Mighty Mouse, simply because I heard it and danced to it a couple of times over the weekend. That's right - danced! Dancing's back, and boy did it feel good! I also mixed up tracks from Dr Packer, Probably Shouldn't, Mannix, Andy Buchan and a new freebie from myself. In the second hour It's my pleasure to welcome back the talented and amazing Wahine. Lauren was a guest on my show way back on Episode 19 in early 2020 and since then, despite covid preventing us ever meeting, we've become good friends and spent many hours enjoying music together thanks to the power of internet radio shows and chatrooms. Lauren has impeccable taste in music and is an excellent DJ, but above all else is a wonderfully positive, warm and supportive soul who is always willing to help or offer advice to anyone. The world needs more people like Lauren. Lauren's first appearance on the show was before I started asking for exclusive mixes, so her mix was taken (with her permission) from one already on her soundcloud. So this one is her first exclusive! As you'd expect from Wahine the track selection is flawless and the mixing silky smooth, but the vibe is perhaps a bit deeper than I'd normally expect from her. I like it a lot though, it's sultry, classy and very funky - it just shows how versatile she is as an artist. Huge thanks to Lauren for a stunning mix! In this episode, Kelly is joined by DJ and all round vibe provider Rob da Bank. Having co founded and run Bestival and Camp Bestival for close to 20 years, Rob and his wife Josie are now present in the wellness scene with their enterprise Sleep Retreat and most recently, Camp Earth. Knowing the strains life can have on the body and mind their mission is to create safe spaces for guests to unwind and reconnect. Kelly and Rob discuss that journey into wellness, why bringing people together with music has always been such a drive and how lockdown has affected the da Bank family in the last year.
Rob da Bank has been getting the party started for decades, ever since he first started DJing in the 1990s. But one of the biggest casualties of the Covid-19 crisis has been live music and festivals, and with the 2021 summer festival season now in doubt, we caught up with Rob to found how he has coped with this radical change in his life. We chat to Rob about how he's managing with homeschooling his four sons at home in the Isle of Wight, and why being able to spend time outdoors and in nature is keeping him going. As the co-founder, along with his wife Josie, of legendary festivals Bestival and Camp Bestival, we also talk about the sense of connection and belonging that people get from festivals, how they're nourishing for our souls and how we're all missing those release valves in our lives because of the lockdowns. Rob has moved into meditation teaching in the past few years, and so we also talk to him about how he's shifted his focus from making people happy through DJing, to helping them discover their true self through meditation. Rob and Josie now run Sleep Retreat, an ‘antidote to 21st century living' where yoga and meditation provide a calm respite from our over-screened worlds. https://sleepretreat.net Thanks so much to Rob for talking to us – we hope you enjoy it. Answering all these questions is the amazing DJ Rob Da Bank! Welcome to Episode #145 where this week I'm more super-excited than usual. Firstly my guest is Rob Da Bank, legendary DJ turned festival curated and podcaster. Secondly, we're launching our annual day-long event for entrepreneurs. Thirdly I'm launching a new business.. For full details of this year's event on October 17th in Bournemouth at the UK's #1 Hilton hotel go to the Screw it, Just Do it Facebook page for the launch. We'll releasing a limited number of early-bird tickets today, July 10th, as well as announcing the first two of eight speakers. The rest we'll be announcing week by week throughout the summer. Back to today's guest, Rob Da Bank, DJ, podcaster, record-label owner and festival curator including Camp Bestival, Common People and Bestival. Rob started Bestival back in 2004 and has survived the surge in popularity festivals have enjoyed in what has increasingly become a competitive space. Bestival doubled in size every year, reaching a peak of 55,000 and has played host to artists such as the Beastie Boys, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder and Elton John. He's also showcased his DJ'ing all over the world, hosted his own show on Radio 1 and is credited with helping develop bar-based culture. He's also got his own podcast, The A to Z of Festivals and is married to Camp Bestival Co-Founder Josie whom he has four children. In a very honest and open chat, Rob talks us through the high's and low's of his entrepreneurial life. I started by asking Rob who's responsible for putting the festival line-up together as eclectic as Napalm Death, Jess Glynne & Goldie Lookin' Chain... Let's StartUp!
"Headspace-wise I feel a lot healthier this year in a mental way. I've put all my focus on Camp Bestival plus I've got a record label, I'm doing a podcast, DJ'ing and a dad of four and all that stuff. It's all a juggling act, but in terms of Camp Bestival we've given it 100% of our headspace and our ideas, and the line-up. I really feel like this year we would have delivered. All we need is sunshine and a lovely crowd - and we'll be away." Welcome to the trailer for Episode #145 which will be released on Wednesday, July 10th. Also look out for the launch of our October 17th day-long event called Reaching Millions: The Screw it, Just Do it Way. Our Facebook page will have the latest news with a limited number of early-bird tickets being released, along with a select number of our eight speakers. Why do some new mothers resent their partner when they try to help and then hate them when they don't? They also discuss the joys of Lidl and why it's often Anniki's friends want to talk about. There's also an interview with US author- Jancee Dunn, who wrote the brilliant book, 'How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids'. From Glastonbury to The End Of The Road, Summer festivals continue to colonise the countryside. But how do people pull together such enormous events year after year? In our 2017 Summer Festivals Special, Olly meets Pete Lawrence, co-founder of The Big Chill, which went from being a low-key ‘festival in a club’ for 150 people in Islington to an massive outdoor happening, taking over huge venues across Britain, with acts including Lily Allen, The Proclaimers, Basement Jaxx, and Leonard Cohen. How do you choose the perfect location for your booming event? How can you maintain counter-culture ethics whilst wooing corporate sponsors? And how can you keep the Police on-side when so many attendees are doing drugs? Pete - now founder of campfireconvention.uk - reveals all... Meanwhile, in this week’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart - fresh from sitting near Kate Adie at a train station - previews the Summer festivals you’ve never heard of, but should get tickets for NOW. In his top three are G!, in the Faroe Islands; the Archstoyanie Land Art Festival, 200 km southwest of Moscow; and, closer to home, the Brainchild festival, a ‘DIY and volunteer-led festival’ in East Sussex. Also, he explains why every festivalgoer needs a BioLite camping stove and Minipresso portable espresso machine, and receives an exciting invitation to Camp Bestival as part of his quest to become a true trends insider. Elsewhere, Alix Fox brings news of sex festival Swingfields in this week’s Foxhole, and has a surprising suggested use for Original Source Mint and Tea Tree shower gel. She also tackles another prickly listener question - this week, how to speed up ejaculation when trying to conceive a child within your partner’s most fertile window of conception. The Foxhole is sponsored by the sex legends who created mycondom.com. They stock all you need for festive fumble in a tent - or just a bonk in bed at home whilst watching the Glasto coverage on telly. It's our birthday! And we have a very special guest joining us to celebrate. One year ago, on the first ever episode of The Scummy Mummies Podcast, we reviewed Viv Groskop's brilliant book I Laughed, I Cried. Now we get to chat with Viv herself, live from the Latitude festival. We talk about what it's like to do a hundred stand-up gigs in a hundred days and find out what Viv's been up to since then. We get some great recommendations for summer reading and answer the age-old question of whether they have badgers in Australia. Plus there is a surprise cameo by another special guest. Many thanks to the lovely people from the New Statesman who let us record in their backstage area. Sorry the sound quality's not so great - it's festival ambience, innit. If you'd like to see the Scummy Mummies LIVE, we'll be at Camp Bestival this Friday 1 August, performing in the Guardian Literary... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dancing, shouting, mud baths, raw sewage - in many ways, music festivals are just large-scale children's parties. So we're celebrating the start of the season with DJ Amanda Gettrup, who'll be appearing at Camp Bestival next month. Ellie explains why she thinks all festivals are rubbish actually, and Helen looks forward to attending three with her this summer. We address important topical questions like how relevant Five Star are today and whether happiness really is the truth. Plus, we find out our DJ names and take part in what must be the first ever rap battle to feature the word "taramasalata". It may be the worst thing we have ever done. Thanks for listening! And if you'd like to see the Scummy Mummies LIVE, come on down to the Caversham Festival near Reading. We'll be performing there on Sunday 13th July. It's FREE! Or you can see us at Camp Bestival, along with Amanda. And finally there's our Camden Fringe show - Sat 23 and Sun 24 August at the Hen and Chickens, 3pm. Get your tickets now!
