No.There is one perfect aspect to the new show though, and that is the first guest. Tom Middleton is a true don of electronic music. From his seminal work with Mark Pritchard as Global Communication and Jedi Knights, through multiple solo albums, and collaborations with luminaries such as Matthew Herbert, the man's record is unimpeachable.Perhaps just as interestingly though, is his second career as a sleep coach, sensory designer, and pioneer of audio therapeutics for sleep, relaxation, pain management, and cognitive performance. He's a co-founder of White Mirror, where he crafts health-driven sensory content and experiences, and a sleep science expert and neuroscience researcher. His therapeutic audio helps millions through Calm, Apple Music and Breathonics.Yes that's right. So this is a highly interesting conversation, and a great way to start the new show.If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! We are joined by Tom Middleton this week, to discuss his game studio - Roforco. Roforco helps brands tackle the enigmatic game platform and game creation system known as ‘Roblox.' Brands are now discovering how to take advantage of Roblox's popularity amongst Gen Z and Gen A, by creating brand gaming experiences. Tom discusses the importance of the shock-value for a brand, the ability to create an amazing first impression on the site and developing a game that gets people talking. It is also incredibly important to build upon this initial impact, with updates and the creation of fans and a community, to ensure longevity in Roblox. We discuss how to build a game that stands this test of time. For many brands, Roblox is an unknown and untapped market. Roforco helps them throughout the entire process from pitching to programming as well as building fan communities. The influence of the game will help answer that all-important question - How can you change, for the better, an entire generation's perspective of your brand? Roforco has the answer - Roblox is the future.

Imagine you're a child and you're riding in the back seat of a car at night. You watch the trees passing by you through the window, and then you close your eyes so you can feel the vibrations through the seat. All the while the engine softly rumbles all around you, surrounding you like a blanket. Over half of parents surveyed said they've used “dream drives,” taking their children on a drive at night just to help them fall asleep. But what if you're driving an electric vehicle? Would it still have that soothing rumble? Last year Nissan partnered with Tom Middleton to find a way to preserve this timeless experience in the Nissan LEAF, an electric car that would normally be completely silent. To help the LEAF sound and feel more like an old-fashioned car, Middleton created an ambient album of combustion engine sounds called the “Nissan Leaf Dream Drive” that's available on Spotify, Google Play and other platforms. To learn more about it, just click the link below: https://www.edelman.com/work/nissan-dream-drive (https://www.edelman.com/work/nissan-dream-drive) This isn't the first time sounds have been added to electric vehicles to make them seem more familiar, and it won't be the last. A new EU law mandates that by this July all hybrid and electric vehicles will need an “acoustic vehicle alert system” to make sure pedestrians can hear approaching vehicles. Those sounds are required to resemble a gasoline engine, and to scale up and down with the vehicle's speed. A similar “quiet car” law will take effect in the United States this March, after a six-month extension. Electric cars are just one example of how new technology is changing many of the sounds we take for granted, and how we're working to bring those sounds back in new ways. You may have heard of the “coconut effect,” especially if you're a fan of old westerns or a certain Monty Python movie. Whether it's coconut shells clapping to imitate galloping horses, or the squealing tires during every car chase, or whirring, beeping computers, there are sounds in movies that we just expect to be there. It turns out that many of the sounds we take for granted in our lives work much the same way. If you've ever had a cell phone call drop – and who hasn't? - you could probably tell after just a second that the line's dead. But how did you know? Though we don't usually notice it, there's a slight background hum added to digital telephones called a “comfort noise.” It's only there when the line's open, and when that hum stops we know that the call's ended without even really thinking about it. That hum was just a side effect for landline phones, but we've become so used to it that, even though modern phones don't really need it, we've added it back in. Smartphones also do this with buttons that click when you press them, even though you're just tapping a screen, while haptic feedback gives your hand a slight jolt with each click. It doesn't need to do that, but it wouldn't feel right for us if it didn't. From rumbling vacuum cleaners and clicking car locks, from satellite radios with fake static to potato chips meant to crunch with each bite, a surprising number of sounds around us are intentionally designed to enhance our lives. For a closer look at some of them, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZOpDve8ARA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZOpDve8ARA) As digital technology expands and replaces older, mechanical sounds with silence, it turns out that at least some of those background noises, whether it's the rumble of a car engine or the hiss of a phone line, are still pretty useful. Sound remains an important part of our lives, and in many ways the audio industry is now working to replace and improve upon those missing sounds. Most of us aren't that comfortable with things being too quiet. Having those little clicks and hums all around us helps give the world context, and reassures us that everything's still working even when nothing seems to be...
Please enjoy the first mix of 2021 - a selection of astral electronic sounds. I've never been a sci-fi fan - up until my favorite blog Wait But Why published a series on Elon Musk and Space X. Also it seems like there's a lot of talk about alien revelations being the next big thing to expect after the pandemic - hence the inspiration for this mix.And to celebrate the new year, I'm introducing a personal commentary for each track.Enjoy what you hear? Consider signing up via email to be notified about new uploads. And if you feel like offering me a cup of coffee each month, consider subscribing to Mixcloud Select.Tracklist:Alan Hawkshaw - Sky 2Taken from the legendary 1979 album "Frontiers of Science" by British composer Alan Hawkshaw. A deep dive into 70s sci-fi soundtracks. I had no doubt that this was going to be the perfect opening for this mix.V-Vm - The Death Of Rave 090V/Vm is none other than British composer Leyland James Kirby - better known as The Caretaker. In 2006 he released a monster release of 200+ compositions intended as a requiem to the golden age of rave. It sounds dark, spastic and beautifully haunting.Stars of the Lid - GasfarmingOne of the quietest tunes of 2001 drone classic "Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid".William Basinski - 4(E+D04(ER=EPR)First heard on a Ryuichi Sakamoto mix for Warp Records. Astral.Gas - Pop 4Circular.Sawako - Cloud No CrowdClassic reverse moods from this Tokyo-based female composer. In The Branches - GravityEndless guitar.Mr. YT - SouvenirThe only beatless track included in the excellent 2017 "Brand New Day" EP.Amba - MoonbathingThis track probably needs no introduction, but it's a good reminder of the uber talent of mr Tom Middleton.Neuronphase - RawdustI wasn't sure whether to include this or Sawdust - essentially the same composition with some added drums. The progression sounds dangerously similar to Linkwood's "Love Lost".Missing Soul - Regard (Ron Trent Remix)Ron Trent is infiniteLarry Heard - Summertime BreezeI had my Larry Heard passion moment around ten years ago. While the first half is as exotic and mysterious as it sounds, the sudden change in chord progression around the 3 min mark feels like a warm hugh from a distant friend.Apple Podcast
In December 2000, The Big Chill hosted one of the most memorable concerts I have had the pleasure to be involved with. Tom Middleton, our resident DJ through the years and now esteemed club and yoga session DJ, composer and sleep therapist, fulfilled an ambition. He got to score and perform two of the tracks from the seminal album 76:14 by Global Communication, his project at the time with Mark Pritchard. Tom invited me to play the DJ warm-up set for him, which I really enjoyed doing, along with Muffled Visions images on the night. The resulting mix 'Deep and Crisp and Even' has remained popular since its inception and already received several thousand downloads from a variety of sites. It's one of my most loved mixes and seems to suit a variety of occasions. To mark the anniversary two decades on, I have revisited the Deep and Crisp and Even mix I created for that iconic night and put visuals to it, something I have always wanted to do. Enforced lockdown here on Paros has given me a few days spare time to essentially create a film of slides around the mix (original photos by myself as well as found footage on the web). It clocks in at 62 minutes, a sound and vision scape through choral, classical, electronica, piano music and more. The full mix is available on Campfire's Vimeo channel after its premiere at the World Harmony event over Winter Solstice 2020. In this promo Firecast, I talk about the emotional resonance that the mix holds for me and offer a few thoughts on each track. I hope you enjoy it.

The Podcast extravaganza returns for the first of its Halloween themed review line up! On this episode: "The Devil All The Time"! Netflix's new, beautifully shot, vomit inducing, non-linear dissection of American history and culture. Starting Tom Holland (which we mistakenly called Tom Middleton, for some reason, sorry Spiderman) and the alway interesting, always impeccable Robert Patterison, joined by a diverse host of cast members, this dark and twisted thriller is not for the faint of heart. This film pulls no punches, and gives Gray and Jay plenty of material to harp on about. Such as, violence in cinema (yay!), and representation of people of colour in cinema! But don't worry, they guys lighten up this dark season and talk about J.K. Rowling's controversial views on Trans people, Anti-Maskers, the Snowflake generation, RuPaul, and Trump's positive Corona results. As always: *Spoilers Ahead Foll* and enjoy the show! Mucho love!

Today Den interviews Tom Middleton who is one of Den's coaching clients, a real gentleman, and one helluva drone pilot! Here's a sneak peek at what you'll hear:Tom gives his personal account of how his business was affected by the pandemic. (Obviously, it wasn't pretty. Okay, so his story's not unique, BUT... how Tom responded to the crisis is. Listen up at 4:15) A clever thing Tom did when designing his online course content that differentiates his course from almost all others you'll find online today. (Not only does this clever thing make his course unique, but it also boosts user engagement and retention. - 6:10) A sweet tip for filming with drones you've probably never heard. - 8:15 A very important (and counterintuitive) drone technique that all amateur drone pilots are clueless about. - 10:50 How not to F up your drone. - 11:50 Den's funny tale about getting coaching from a bigwig cameraman. This story makes Mr. Miyagi's "wax on wax off" method look exciting and sensible compared to what this guy had Den doing. - 13:45 More cool tips for drone pilots. – 15:00 A BIG mistake most drone pilots make when filming sunrises and sunsets. But YOU won't after you hear what's taught at 17:50 Want to become a drone pilot but don't know what drone to buy? Listen up at 27:50 A nice little “perk” for listeners of this podcast. FOR DECADES, globalization has been a fact of life. And even before Covid-19, it was becoming controversial. Now, with critical supply chains being disrupted by the pandemic, we're having a bit of a rethink. Whatever happens with global trade, one thing is certain: the global exchange of music, film, art and media is a cultural fact of life that will remain as vibrant and creative as ever. San Francisco is the home of Six Degrees Records, a company that's been dedicated to crossing musical borders since 1996, with the provocative slogan "everything is closer than you think." They live the idea, releasing a wide range of traditional and progressive music from around the planet. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an Anglo-American ambient journey, on a program called SIX DEGREES OF AMBIENT. Music is by ANOTHER FINE DAY, TOM MIDDLETON, BOB HOLROYD, TOM GREEN, HALFTRIBE, ANDREW HEATH, DARSHAN AMBIENT, JEFF PEARCE, RICHARD NORRIS, and MARK ISHAM. What could be a better example of free speech in America than to be able to speak freely in public in another language? And when it comes to patriotism, what could be more patriotic than defending our country by actually being able to understand our allies, and our enemies, in their own languages? To help envision such a new normal in America, we take you to a country that shows how a linguistically diverse nation can function. Come with us as America the Bilingual goes to Morocco, in Episode 39 of our podcast. The America the Bilingual podcast is part of the Lead with Languages campaign of ACTFL — The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. This episode was written by Steve Leveen, the founder of America the Bilingual, and edited by Fernando Hernández, who also does our sound design and mixing. Mim Harrison is the editorial and brand director for the America the Bilingual project. Graphic arts are created by Carlos Plaza Design Studio. Caroline Doughty is our social media maestro. Beckie Rankin is the podcast’s associate producer. Daruma Tech powers the America the Bilingual website. Special thanks to the ALI colleagues I traveled with to Morocco, including: Ken Creary and Lauren States, Bob Heckart, Lisa Claudy Fleischman and Chuck Fleischman, Ken and Lisa Kelley, Judy Perry Martinez and Rene Martinez, Eduardo Elejalde and Maria Teresa, Winifred White Neisser and Ken Neisser, Michael and Laurie Pepe, Jim and Karen Sherriff, Deborah Hannam and John Donovan, Peter Holbrook, Denis Weil, Horst Melcher, Susan and Len Miller, and Louise and Tom Middleton. Lovebirds -I Want You In My Soul Another DJ Friendly Edit By Mister Turner Sebastian Döring Lovebirds is the solo project of Hamburg resident Sebastian ‘Basti’ Doering. Following 3 excellent singles on the much-respected Winding Road Records label, Lovebirds is big news right now. Labels such as Freerange and Buzzin Fly are hot on his heels, eager to sign his tracks. The first Lovebirds release appeared on Trax of Interest in [year]. In 2006, having built up a repertoire of unsigned material, he sent a CD to John Buckby, label owner of Winding Road Records and a mutual friend of Vincenzo. The Lovebirds sound is like a blast from the past with house steroids packing serious production muscle. Listening to Lovebirds is like taking trip back to the 70s and 80s - but riding in a gleaming futuristic spaceship. The first Lovebirds single on Winding Road was the ‘Modern Stalking’ EP, which came out in 2007. The EP contained tracks of mid-tempo house, each coming from a different musical angle and giving the world a taste of what he was capable of. It was received by the deep house and neo-disco community with open arms. Top-flight DJ’s such as Prins Thomas, Ashley Beedle and Jimpster went wild for it. Bill Brewster made the EP the Single Of The Month in iDJ magazine. Lovebirds had landed. His second single for Winding Road was slamming vocal track ‘Love On My Hands’, which featured the voice of Holly Backler. As with the first EP, this release drew much praise from the deep house cognoscenti and put Basti ever more firmly on the map. Most recently, July 2008 sees the release of third single for Winding Road, ‘In The Shadows’. Once again, an extremely classy offering received by the tastemakers to great acclaim. Although the Lovebirds name has burst onto the scene relatively recently, Basti is no beginner in the production game. Basti formed Knee Deep, together with old friend Toddie Freese in 1998. Knee Deep became a household name in the dance scene, leading to international DJ gigs and mountains of remix work. As Knee Deep, Basti has remixed Jamiroquai 3 times, as well as Bob Sinclair, David Morales, Brandy, and many others, even winning the prestigious “best remixer” category in the 2002 German Dance Awards in the process (beating Timo Maas along the way). A few years on, Basti had achieved all he wanted to with Knee Deep, and was ready to move into more deeper, melancholy musical avenues. And so Lovebirds was born, which is now his main project. His production experience means that he is able to finish well-rounded tracks off in a matter of days, constantly building a repertoire of classy dancefloor and mellow sounds all destined to wow the world. The process is well on its way already. The cream of the dance world has its eyes on Lovebirds. Tom Middleton is a big fan. Jimpster has signed up some tracks for a first EP on Freerange. Ben Watt is in regular contact and has signed a track for one of his recent compilations. Basti is involved in fruitful collaborations with Holly Backler, Vincenzo, and other artists. As if all this wasn’t enough, Basti is gathering a collection of songs for release on his and Vincenzo’s new label Teardrop Records, which is destined to become an essential new addition to the house library.

This week after a chance encounter at the IMS last month, we meet Sleep Scientist Tom Middleton. You may also know Tom as British Record producer, but the man has many strings to his bow these days as he is also a sound architect - a psychoacoustic sound designer, an electronic neoclassical composer, and most recently, a trained Sleep science coach. Perhaps all of those titles confuse you deeply, but all you do need to know is that in todays podcast we are going to be hearing all about how to access that deep, dreamy sleep that makes you feel like a million dollars and some of the music from Toms Sleep Better album he produced specifically to help people do exactly that. Tom was also a coach on the recent Remedy state Retreat in ibiza and you can find this record on Spotify. Красиво стартует заглавным хитом альбома Dusky под названием Stick By This и плавно переходит в музыкальную вакханалию Beautiful Life от Мартина Ротта. Laura Jones - Love In Me, а сразу после него этот You от неповторимого Бейера. Красиво стартует заглавным хитом альбома Dusky под названием Stick By This и плавно переходит в музыкальную вакханалию Beautiful Life от Мартина Ротта. Laura Jones - Love In Me, а сразу после него этот You от неповторимого Бейера. Wärtsilä product data transformed into music. Composed and Performed by Tom Middleton (featuring the Wärtsilä Choir and iPad Orchestra)
It's the last of the double-digits! In Episode 99, I (David) bring in five different mixes which I thinks that DJs should listen to. These mixes have a lot to offer, especially to DJs, because of their mixing style and programming. (full mix) > http://passionatedj.com/5mixes/danny The first mix is Danny Howells' Essential Mix from 2007. This mix covers a lot of ground, representing loads of different styles while somehow making it all work together. From start to finish, it's loaded full of interesting dance music. After you're done listening, you get the feeling that you've just listened to a "house mix"... yet, I would categorize few of the songs as simply "house". The standout track, for me, is right at the beginning: "Shinkansen" by Tom Middleton (though, it's pitched down in this example). (full mix) > http://passionatedj.com/5mixes/holden For the second mix, we explore Balance 005, mixed by James Holden. Back in 2003, this mix (especially disc one, which we will hear clips from) almost helped wrap up an era of beautiful and dark progressive house. There are a few "light and fluffy" moments, but overall, the mix has a somber tone. "You are Sleeping", Luke Chable's remix of the PQM track, is the highlight here: an entertaining (yet somewhat depressing) tale of a lonely man and a young woman in need of saving. (full mix) > http://passionatedj.com/5mixes/irish Then, I take you way back into my past, with a 140 - 145 BPM example of what got me into this whole dance music thing. This hour of ravey, trancey goodness is called "Essential Trance 4" by DJ Irish. It represents all the aggressive, synthy, melodic music that I was looking for as a teenager. It's a vinyl mix (which can be detected by the scratches and pops), with excellent transitions and harmonic mixing. Buckle up, and be ready for some cheesy 90s goodness. (full mix) > http://passionatedj.com/5mixes/nintendub The fourth mix is entirely different than anything else in the list. "Nintendub", by Squincy Jones, was a weirdly awesome mixture of dubstep, 90s hip-hop, and 8-bit Nintendo sounds. There are a few other nods to the 80s and 90s as well, such as music from The Lost Boys, and the Unsolved Mysteries theme (aka, the stuff of nightmares). Overall, this 2008 shows extreme creativity through its use of heavy beats, rap acapellas, video game music mashups, sound effects, and more. (full mix) > http://www.passionatedj.com/5mixes/northern Finally, I wrap up the show with one of the best recorded DJ mix albums of all time: Northern Exposure, by Sasha and John Digweed. If you listen to only one of these mixes in full, make sure this is the one. The whole thing is just chock full of beautiful music, ethereal soundscapes, and dance music that originates from a time before most people had heard of a "rave". This 1996 mix album will be very revealing about where electronic DJs come from, as well as where it can go. Cheers, take care, and we'll see you next week with the recording of Episode 100 Live!

Waiting for my mixes is turning out to be like waiting for bus.......... My 3rd mix in a fortnight is what I am calling Chilled House. The 40 tunes I have handpicked take you on a 3.5hr journey through a few genres of down and then more medium tempo house music. Genres include progressive deep house, commercial house and what I call deep house which is not this stuff from last few years thats been branded deep house when its actually commercial but genuinely deeper house. There are some old skool, garagey and handbag house riffs throughout this mix. With music amongest others from KANT, Robert Babicz, Tom Middleton, Vincenzo, Way Out West, Jody Wisternoff, Jamie Antonelli, Sandy Rivera, Ad Brown, Ian Pooley, Nora En Pure, Sebastien Leger, Larse, Yotto and EDX it#s a bit like a box of chocolates. This set would be ideal to listen to by the pool, at a houseparty, while you are working or most definitely with a few sundowners. It would work as a decent warm up set with the last couple of tunes ready to link into a main room pumping progressive house set. I am thinking of recording my next mix as such so i can then link the two together to make a long player. Watch this space! Turn it on, turn it up and enjoy the journey!
