This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're looking at a climate tech company that's a Kickstarter graduate with a surprisingly action-movie sounding solution to reforestation. Flash Forest is using drones that fire (harmless) seed projectiles at the ground to help automate and speed up reforestation. Co-founder Cameron Jones tells Molly how the mission to plant a billion trees was sparked by personal experiences with wildfire devastation in Canada, inspiring him to start the business with his brother. He shares insights on the challenges and triumphs of launching a Kickstarter-funded venture, turning innovative ideas into a reality. Stay tuned as we continue our miniseries on Kickstarter's success stories next week with Jonathan Cedar of BioLite.LINKS:Flash ForestCameron JonesAll episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://plus.acast.com/s/everybody-in-the-poolPlease subscribe and tell your friends about Everybody in the Pool! Dr. Mike shares his journey into physical therapy and how dissatisfaction with the traditional medical system led him to explore alternative treatments like dry needling, cupping, blood flow restriction, and eventually red light therapy. He explains the science behind red light therapy, emphasizing its ability to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and boost mitochondrial health. Red light and near-infrared light both penetrate the body to stimulate energy production in mitochondria, which is key for overall health. Dr. Mike also touches on the importance of proper dosage, revealing that many popular red light therapy devices don't provide accurate power measurements, which can lead to ineffective treatments. The conversation dives into practical considerations, such as how red light therapy can improve skin health, treat pain, and even enhance cognitive function. Dr. Mike highlights the difference between using red light therapy for surface-level treatments (like skin) versus deeper tissues (like the brain and joints), and offers guidance on choosing the right devices depending on personal needs. He also addresses common misconceptions, such as the idea that more red light therapy is always better.Brad and Dr. Mike wrap up by discussing BioLite's products, including portable devices and more extensive full-body panels, and how users can incorporate red light therapy into their daily routines. Dr. Mike introduces his "protocol ecosystem," a free tool on the BioLite website that helps users determine the optimal duration for their red light therapy sessions based on the device's light irradiance and the condition being treated.Overall, the episode provides a thorough and engaging discussion about the science and practical applications of red light therapy, focusing on its potential to boost mitochondrial health, reduce inflammation, and support overall wellness. If you're interested in online personal training or being a guest on my podcast, "Over 40 Fitness Hacks," you can reach me at brad@over40fitnesshacks.com or visit my website at:www.Over40FitnessHacks.comAdditionally, check out my Yelp reviews for my local business, Evolve Gym in Huntington Beach, at https://bit.ly/3GCKRzV

But with countless, ever-sophisticated ways in which to do so, how can we “power up” – safely but also sustainably? In partnership with Biolite, Emerald Laser and SofWave, this inspiring panel discussion united three trailblazing UK experts: including Medical Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year, Dr Yusra Al-Mukhtar; Harley Street dermatologist, Dr Derrick Phillips; and Biolite founder and integrative health advocate, Mona Mirza.Together, we explored the wellness trends of the future – from neurocosmetics to regenerative therapies; longevity medicine to mental health – while discovering the most results-driven routes to looking, and feeling, recharged.

Welcome to the 77th episode of “Decode Quantum”. We continue our “international episodes”, this times with the cofounders of the US startup SEEQC,John Levy (CEO) and Oleg Mukhanov (CTO), who are creating superconducting control electronic circuits for solid state qubits. They are the only company in that field. We had a chance to meet our two guests in Elmsford in February this year and visit their lab and cleanroom. John Levy is the CEO and cofounder of SEEQC in 2019. Beforehand, he was the chairman of Hypres, the company that spun-out SEEQC for reasons he'll explain later. He was involved in various startups, like goTenna, and BioLite. He has been an investor and executive in the tech industry, having co-founded and led the tech practice at the venture capital firm L Capital Partners where he served on boards of over twelve tech companies. John took 3 companies public and oversaw numerous M&A transactions. During the 1990's he co-founded the computer vision company ePlanet which spun out of Interval Research, sponsored by Paul Allen, and ran the company for Intel, its main investor. John is a graduate of the Harvard Business School. Oleg Mukhanov, is a cofounder and the CTO of SEEQC. He was before the CTO of Hypres since 1991, where he led developments in superconducting electronics. Oleg is a co-inventor of the Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) technology, a superconducting circuit used for high-speed, energy-efficient computation useful for both classical and quantum processors. He did his PhD in Russia with Konstantin Likharev in the late 1980s, at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), before moving to the US at the end of the USSR.

Jonathan Cedar is the CEO and of BioLite, a social enterprise that develops, manufactures, and markets advanced energy products for off-grid communities around the world (outdoor + emerging markets). With roots as an engineer (previously working for SmartDesign), Jonathan co-founded BioLite after inventing a cleaner-combusting cookstove that produced 99% fewer smoke emissions than traditional, open-flame fires. After taking the HomeStove to a combustion conference, Jonathan realized the positive impact his product could have on lives in emerging markets as smoke from traditional open flame fires leads to over 4 million deaths a year. BioLite continues to grow within the parallel innovation pipeline, producing similar products for two distinct audiences and using funds from the outdoor market to subsidize the growth within emerging markets. You can read the full impact report here. Fun Fact: He's a great banjo player.
This week Clint and Dawson sat down with Kurt Smith. Kurt Smith grew up in Lake Tahoe and first faced off with Yosemite's big walls and rock climbs in 1980. 41 years and thousands of routes later, his accomplishments include three years of competing on the National and World Cup circuit, with wins at the Nationals, twelfth place at the World Cup in 1992, plus a top-20 ranking. He has spent 4 decades opening up new routes in Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Clear Creek Canyon, Rifle, El Potrero Chico, Mexico and other popular climbing areas, with a mission to create “the best lines regardless of the grade.” With over 500 First Ascents under his belt he is not slowing down in his quest for new lines. But the apogee of his involvement with climbing may be his affiliation and work with the Access Fund (www.accessfund.org) over the years, and his Kickin' Access Tours. Rock & Ice Magazine named the Kickin Access Tour number 7 of the "Top 10 Most Important Climbing Events of 2001." Kurt spent 6 years crisscrossing the country to throw these climber access events, raising over $100,000 and signing up over 3000 members for the Access Fund. Due to Kurt's huge success in his fundraising efforts for the AF, he was elected to the AF's Board of Directors in 2001, on which he served a 3-year term. Kurt has called the New River Gorge, WV home for the last 16 years and is the owner of Top Gun Sales. The way you position your company in the eyes of your customers is the most make-or-break decision you can make. Who are you selling to? What problem are you solving for them? Why should a customer buy from you? All these questions need answers, and if they aren't the right answers, it's going to be a pretty rocky road. So when you hear about a humidifier that's being positioned as a beauty product, what do you think? Good idea or bad? Well, for the guys at Canopy, it turned out to be a great idea and we got into it on this special in-person roundtable episode of Up Next in Commerce. Joining me in-studio here in Austin, Texas was Eric Neher, CMO at Canopy, Justin Seidenfeld, CEO at Doris Dev and Co-Founder of Canopy, and Lucas Lappe, Head of Product and Co-Founder at Doris Dev. We talked all things Canopy, but we also dove into Doris Dev, a product development agency that has helped scale companies like Blueland, Magic Spoon, BioLite, Supply, Lalo, and many more. During this epic chat, we touched on a little bit of everything -- from branding and logistical issues to product design and marketing, and beyond. I hope you have as much fun listening as I had hanging out with this lively trio. Main Takeaways:An Obvious Way In: When you are thinking about using a subscription model, you should have an obvious reason to get in touch with your customer or a product that they need to replace or replenish that is the basis of your subscription. When you force goods on customers that they don't need or even necessarily want via a subscription, you spoil the relationship you have built with them. Trendspotting: One of the most recent trends, particularly in the world of beauty, is blending innovative, creative experiences with products that are created with sustainable materials. Today's customers have higher expectations than ever before and they are looking to support brands that rise to the occasion in every way.The Need For Newness: Bringing new products, experiences, and opportunities to customers is one of the best ways to keep them engaged. But in creating new things — even if it's just an updated version of something that exists — you are constantly struggling to make sure that what you build works, does what you want, does what the customer needs, and never takes away from the brand or the experience. But those are challenges you need to face in order to not pigeonhole your business by relying on one or two products forever. For an in-depth look at this episode, check out the full transcript below. BioLite CEO Jonathan Cedar shines a light on how many people around the world lack clean, affordable household energy, which leads to meals cooked on smoky open fires and little or no electricity in homes. After learning about these issues, Jonathan founded BioLite, which offers products designed to cook, charge, and light off-grid households by harnessing surrounding energy. Through the company’s unique Parallel Innovation model, BioLite targets both off-grid households in emerging markets and outdoor recreation users seeking no-fuel cooking and charging. Jonathan and Aaron discuss how this model provides an anchor revenue stream from the outdoor recreation users that allows the company the time and space needed to determine an economically sustainable business model to effectively serve the emerging market customers that most need these products. Tune in to hear why Jonathan thinks we need to change how we think and talk about purpose and sustainability when it comes to business, and learn more at bioliteenergy.com. Erica Rosen is the VP of Marketing at BioLite. BioLite is on a mission to bring outdoor and off-grid energy to people everywhere one watt at a time. Each BioLite product sold is re-invested into bringing safe cooking, lighting, and charging to families in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 alone, they offset 307 tons of C02 and helped 797,000 people. In this episode, Erica shares how they are working to make BioLite a household name all while carrying out the mission to help improve people's lives. From the episode: "BioLite is taking the same technology we are developing for our core outdoor markets and turning them into products for emerging markets." "A brand is a way to build trust and measure permission." "Becoming a household name isn't just for dollar and cents success at BioLite. It means that energy is becoming part of everyday conversation and right now we are starting to see that more often." Chris Dickey is the founder of an outdoor PR agency named Purple Orange. Working with brands like BioLite, Peak Design and Oru Kayak, Chris and his team kept noticing short-lived results from outstanding PR work. This troubled Chris and motivated him to build a tool called Visably. Visably provides marketers a way to check their brand ranking against a keyword in search. It's no longer about someone finding your website but recognizing your brand. In this episode, we cover a wide range of topics from Google's algorithms, brand vs distribution, and advice for new companies on where to invest their marketing dollars. From the episode: "How could we have won this big award but not move the needle (for our client)?" "70% of all traffic goes to the first 5 organic links" "If you want to know where your brand sits in search, you can't do it right now."

Techstination interview: BioLite cooks up a little STEM lesson: VP Erica Rosen
CEO and Founder Jonathan Cedar had his eureka moment a decade ago which led him to create a revolutionary way to cook meals and generate electricity. BioLite's signature product, the CampStove, uses thermoelectric technology to improve the efficiency of campfires by over 90% while providing electricity to power lights and charge phones. That would have been enough of an invention itself, but he's also tackling the challenge of how to create a sustainable and profitable business selling into some the poorest communities on the planet. Join us as we talk with Jonathan about the moment he decided to dedicate his life to improving the wellbeing of others, the challenges of running a company with two distinct markets, how to make the most of an uncertain future, and what it means to live a purposeful life.

The Manchester City Marathon in Manchester New Hampshire bills itself as the largest running event in New Hampshire. The 13th edition of the race was held on Sunday, November 10th, 2019. My youngest sister, Autum Haley, traveled with me to this race. It her first half marathon after having her 4th child last year. This was my 62nd marathon in my 49th state. Only one state to go! Race Recap: The Manchester City Marathon The expo/bib pick up was located at the Millennium Running Store in Bedford, NH the day before the race. They also offered race day pick up the morning of the race at race headquarters in Veterans Park. This was a nice option for those who lived somewhat locally. I got a message the night before from a MTA listener named Kathleen on Instagram that her son had eaten one of the UCAN bars she needed to fuel her first marathon. She was wondering if I had an extra she could get. I’d brought a couple extra for my sister and was happy to give her one so we arranged to meet the next morning. It was fun to be able to meet Kathleen and her sister that morning and get a quick picture. We did a MTA Meet up at Backyard Brewery on Saturday evening and it was fun to meet Allie who lived about an hour away as well as Jane and her running team. Jane is the mother of Noelle, one of my first coaching clients. Noelle has gone on to become a trail running rock star completing three 50 milers, two 12 hour races, and recently ran her first 24 hour race (she ran over 94 miles and was the first place female)!Race Morning: The marathon, half, and relays started at 8:50 am and were broadcast live on TV. The 5k started at 9am and had a different course. The starting area was in front of the SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University) Arena in downtown Manchester and was very close to the hotel we were staying at. It was wonderful to be able to wait in the warm hotel lobby until just a few minutes before the race and not have to stand outside in the cold for an extended period of time. The weather was clear and in the low 30’s at the start and there was a slight breeze which made it feel even more chilly. I decided to wear shorts, compression socks, a short sleeve race shirt, arm sleeves, light knit gloves, my lucky hat, and my On Cloudswift shoes. I was also wearing a long sleeve throw-away shirt (which I got rid of at mile 2).The Course: The marathon and half marathon course were identical for the first 13 miles. At mile 13 the race returned to downtown Manchester where the half marathoners finished and the marathoners ran right by the finish line to start the second half of the course. I found the first half of the race to be quite hilly and challenging. My watch showed a total of 1,273 feet of elevation gain for the whole marathon but I’d estimate that at least 800-900 feet of that was in the first half. Most of the course was around the city of Manchester, through the historic mill yard district, and into the suburbs. There are several sections where the course runs along and over the Merrimack River. The course did start to flatten out around mile 16 and at 16.5 we started an out and back section that went to mile 20.5 on the Piscataquog Trail. It was a dirt/gravel surface and there were some roots, rocks, and mud/ice puddles that had to be navigated around. Then the course proceeded to the Goffstown Rail Trail. This is a very scenic portion of the route as it follows the Piscataquog River back to Manchester. At mile 22 the run crosses the new “Trestle” bridge and continues back to the city, crossing the footbridge over the Merrimack River, and running the final miles in downtown Manchester. The final mile goes by the finish area again, turns off Elm street to cross the bridge, and then returns back to Elm Street to the finish. I found that final mile to be challenging because we were teased with the finish and then had a final overpass hill to run up which felt enormous at that point.Aid Stations/Fueling: Official race aid stations were located approximately every two miles and were well supported. Each one had water and sports drink and a few offered other fueling options. There were also a surprising number of unofficial aid stations like a lemonade stand, someone handing out small water bottles, a mimosa stop, a beer stop, and people handing out candy. I stuck with my fueling strategy of using Generation UCAN bars washed down with water from the aid stations. Use the code MTAMANCHESTER to save 15% on your order. For first time customers use the code MTA25.Finish Line: There were a good number of spectators along the final stretch and they had an announcer calling each runner’s name who crossed the finish line. The total number of marathon finishers was 360. There were 562 who finished the half marathon and also quite a few relay teams. There were 270 finishers for the 5k. The medal was huge and featured stained glass elements behind buildings in Manchester. They also did race tracking and offered free race pictures and a finish line video. The shirt was a very nice long sleeve technical shirt. My Experience: I ran with a guy named Carlos for a few miles which helped pass the time. He’s also pursuing his 50 states and working up to a BQ. I ran by feel during the race and only looked at my watch at each mile split. I felt a bit tired just going into the marathon but wanted to run as strong as possible while listening to my body. The uphills and downhills in the first half were challenging and by mile 18 my lower body felt done. It was one of those feelings that I’ve had during marathons in the past when you feel like walking, but walking doesn’t actually feel any better. Since I knew this I tried to keep my stride and gait consistent and run relaxed in spite of my fatigue. My glutes and hamstrings were particularly sore but thankfully my feet felt good. I finished my 62nd marathon (and state #49) in 3:43:01 and was 2nd in my age group. I got a mug and reusable drawstring bag for the AG placing. Autum was at the finish line to meet me and get some pictures. It was great to see her and find out that she had a good half marathon, finishing in 2:19. They had a nice food area with yogurt, soup, flatbread pizza, chocolate milk, and coffee. The heat sheet felt good because the temps were still cool. We headed out later to find a post-race meal and just happened to see Kathleen, the lady who needed the UCAN bar, finish strong. Here’s what she wrote in later: Hi Angie, Thank you so much for meeting me this morning with the UCAN bar. Here is the photo of us. What a highlight for me to get to meet you. Congratulations on a great run today! You inspire your listeners so much. I finished today, my first marathon, in 5:33:17. The miles seemed to fly by and I had a fun experience. Thanks for your great training plan that got me there. Sincerely, -Kathleen I also heard back from Jane from the MTA meet up Hi Angie, What a pleasure to meet you – and your sister Autumn. Kudos to Autumn for traveling, running and being a mom and wife! Pretty amazing! We enjoyed our dinner with you, and the race the next day. We did well on Sunday: Kelsey & Laxmi competed the 5K – Laxmi’s 2nd race ever! Jen, Suzanne, Emily and I did the half marathon. I’m pretty sure it was Emily’s 2nd fastest half. Sara did her 1st marathon at the 2017 Hartford Marathon in 5:10:01. Last week in Manchester, using the MTA training plan, she finished in 4:35:50 !!!! So great!! I am on a quest to be a 50 stater for half marathons. I have 17 completed. Manchester was a repeat state for me – but my 32nd half! I hope that you and Trevor have continued success with MTA. I have certainly enjoyed listening, using your training plans, doing the virtual half and especially wearing my Release the Kraken hat!! Thanks again. -Jane Also Mentioned in This Episode MTA Meet Up at the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. Trevor will be running the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on December 8th. BioLite Energy has an impressive mission: bring energy everywhere. To date, over 1 million people in sub-Saharan Africa have light and electricity thanks to BioLite Energy. In order to bring their innovative products to emerging markets at a price point that the local residents can afford, the company uses its revenues from their outdoor recreation users to help offset the costs for developing nations. In their own words: “Energy sits at the center of our lives, keeping us safe, productive, and comfortable. Energy improves health, combats climate change, enables communication and education, generates income, and empowers women. Creating access for a growing world population has become one of the biggest opportunities of our time. Nearly half the planet lacks clean, affordable household energy, cooking meals on smoky open fires and having little or no electricity in their homes. At BioLite, we engage in two distinct customer segments: off-grid households in emerging markets and outdoor recreation users seeking fuel-independent cooking and charging. Using a unique business model called Parallel Innovation, our team develops core energy technologies that are applicable to both markets. We then design products unique to our outdoor and emerging markets customers.” (https://www.bioliteenergy.com/pages/mission)BioLite has seen tremendous success in their mission to bring energy to the developing world because the products they have developed for outdoor recreation users are truly remarkable. In this episode, Jon interviews Jonathan Cedar, founder of BioLite Energy, and through Jonathan's fascinating story, you'll learn: · How to identify consumer needs in your innovation process· How to build traction in the early days as the world catches up to new technology· How to use innovation to truly change the world Check out their website to learn more, www.bioliteenergy.com. In this podcast episode we bring you inspiring stories from this year’s Boston Marathon. Plus we will give you a run-down of the final results and soundbites from race weekend. And in the quick tip segment, Angie answers a question about what officially counts as a marathon or half marathon. The Boston Marathon 2019 2019 was the 123rd edition of the Boston Marathon. There are around 500,000 spectators who come out every year to cheer on the 30,000 plus runners. This provides a nearly 200 million dollar boost to the local economy. The Boston Marathon is hosted by the Boston Athletic Association which was established in 1887. In 1897 the BAA hosted a 24.5-mile road race for 15 participants (only 10 finished). In 1924 the course was lengthened to 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to the new Olympic standard. The BAA’s symbol is the unicorn and it still appears on today’s marathon medals. Official Boston colors are yellow and blue. Around 9,700 volunteers work the Boston Marathon each year. Most of the race is run outside of Boston. The course starts in Hopkinton and goes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline before entering Boston at mile 24. The BAA reserves around 3,000 spots (of 30,000) for its charity runners. Participants who ran on behalf of more than 260 non-profit organizations raised $36.6 million for charity at the 2018 Boston Marathon and figures will probably be similar this year. Heartbreak Hill, one of the most iconic features of the course, comes between miles 20-21 after the Newton Hills. Although it’s only a 91 feet climb the name started after the 1936 race when runner Johnny Kelley patted fellow runner Tarzan Brown on the back as he passed him. This spurred Tarzan Brown into action and he went on to win the race (thereby “breaking” Kelley’s heart near that hill). Marathon Monday The marathon wasn’t always on a Monday. Up until 1969 the race was always on April 19th, Patriot’s Day, a civic holiday commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution. In 1969 officials changed the race to always be the third Monday in April which is known as Marathon Monday. Boston Strong The mantra “Boston Strong” came about after two bombs exploded at the finish line in 2013 which killed two people and injured 260 others. The city of Boston responded by more than a million spectators coming out to support the 2014 race in which Meb Keflezhighi wrote the names of the victims on his bib and went on to win the race. (2) Qualifying Times It continues to get more challenging to get into Boston with a qualifying time. A total of 30,458 applications were received for qualifiers, a significant increase from recent years. 7,384 qualifiers were unable to be accepted due to field size limitations. Qualifiers who were four minutes, 52 seconds (4:52) or faster than the qualifying time for their age group and gender were accepted into the 2019 race. Qualifying standards will be five minutes faster for all age groups, starting with the 2020 Boston Marathon.2019 Winners Men The men’s pack stayed together until around mile 21 when Geoffrey Kirui dropped the pace from 5:06 to 4:31 and the lead pack dropped down to five. Then there was an exciting sprint finish down the length of Boylston St. for the third closest men’s race ever. 1st- Lawrence Cherono (Kenya) in 2:07:57 (he said,” I was so focused because I’ve never won a major marathon”), 2nd- Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) in 2:07:59 (who said that this was the first time he’s ever been outsprinted), 3rd- Kenneth Kipkemoi (Kenya) 2:08:07. The first American was Scott Fauble in seventh with 2:09:09 and Jared Ward, who finished eighth in 2:09:25 with a PR. Women: Worknish Degefa of Ethiopia took the lead around mile 4 and would go on to expand this lead to 3 minutes by mile 18. 1st- Worknish Degefa winning time was 2:23:31 2nd- Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, 2:24:13. 3rd-American Jordan Hasay posted a time of 2:25:20. Des Linden the defending champion finished 5th in 2:27:00 Men’s wheelchair: 1st- Daniel Romanchuk (USA) 1:21:36 2nd- Masazumi Soejima (Japan) 1:24:30 3rd- Marcel Hug (Switzerland) 1:26:42 Women’s wheelchair: 1st- Manuela Schar (Switzerland) 1:34:19 2nd- Tatyana McFadden (USA) 1:42:35 (at one point she tipped over in her wheelchair) 3rd- Madison de Rozario (Australia) 1:41:36Notable and Inspiring Finishers Joan Benoit Samuelson Joan Samuelson, age 61, finished in 3:04. She made history 40 years ago with a 2:35:15 Boston finish, enough to win Boston and break the course record. This year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary, she planned to run within 40 minutes of her record-breaking time. She did better and finished within 30 minutes of that goal. Gene Dykes Glen Dykes, age 71, broke his own age-group record, posting the fastest course time for a 70-to-74-year-old with a time of 2:58:50. This is after some pretty huge races earlier in the year like the Arches Ultra 50 Miler in Moab in late January, and then the 200-mile Delirious Western Endurance Scenic Trail race in Australia three weeks later. That one took him 101 hours to complete, including five encounters with venomous snakes. “At one point, I spotted a Tiger snake below me when I was in mid-stride,” he recalls. “I had to twist my body and throw myself into the underbrush to avoid it. But these ultra distance adventure runs are great fun, especially when they include sleep deprivation. You get flashbacks afterwards—the good kind.” (3) Stephen VanGampleareThe non-elite man who finished 1st is a Colorado engineer named Stephen VanGampleare who ran a massive PR of 2:18:40, the 26th fastest time of the day. He was initially disappointed by the BAA’s change which started Wave 1 two minutes after the elite men. He not only finished as the top amateur in the race, he also qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the process. Adrianne Haslet Adrianne Haslet is a survivor who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line bombings and had been training to run this year’s marathon. But she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk in January. Despite this tough new challenge she persevered in getting back to running, and ran the BAA 5K, her first race back. “I wanted to run this race so badly. I may have walked, but I never gave up.” (4) Ben Beach Ben Beach is one of the Boston Marathon Legacy runners and ran his first Boston Marathon at age 18 in 1968. He is now 69 and suffers from a rare neurological disorder that sends his lower leg extended sideways and nearly parallel to the ground with each stride. “I’ve made my peace with that. This is what running is like for me now.” His Boston personal best of 2:27:26 was set in 1981. He finished this year in just over 6 hours after dealing with cramping for more than half the race. “I feel good about the streak,” he said. “And I don’t want it to end. I’m struck by how adaptive human beings are. Runners know that the even slightest imbalance will almost guarantee an injury, but here I am, still bumbling along. The way my body has adjusted – it amazes me. I intend to be back in Hopkinton next April and to make up for this lackluster performance,” (5) Marko Cheseto Marko Cheseto is a double amputee who lost both his legs about six inches below the knee to frostbite in 2011. Originally from Kenya, he had come to study at the University of Alaska in Anchorage. In his senior year, deeply upset over the suicide of another UAA runner from Kenya, Cheseto overdosed on pills and disappeared into the woods around the UAA campus. He was the subject of a massive search and rescue operation. On the third day he stumbled into a hotel near the campus with his shoes frozen to his feet. After his recovery Cheseto remained in Anchorage, graduated with a degree in nutrition, got married, had three children, and has become an American citizen. Eighteen months after losing his feet, he resumed running once he was fitted with a pair of running blades. “One thing I just told myself was the condition that I have is just a phenomenon that happened in my life,” Cheseto said on Marathon Monday. “It does not define who I am. I still have my inner power.” He finished in 2:42 with a new PR. His goal is to run a sub-2:10 marathon. (6) Michael Herndon Michael Herndon, age 31, a Marine veteran from Ohio was the picture of determination. His legs locked up near mile 22 forcing the Afghanistan veteran to eventually get down on his hands and knees to crawl. He refused to give up, drawing inspiration from three fellow comrades who didn’t survive a bombing attack overseas. Herndon’s fellow Marines Matthew Ballard and Mark Juarez and British journalist Rupert Hamer died in 2010 from an improvised explosive device’s blast in Afghanistan. When his Achilles tendon starting giving him trouble on Monday and his legs gave out near the end of the race, Herndon chanted his fallen comrades’ names aloud to help himself focus on finishing. Once Herndon crossed the finish line, he was lifted into a wheelchair to receive medical attention. This was his first marathon which he finished in 3:38 and he’s determined that it won’t be his last. He said this about his inspiration, “They are not here anymore. I am here, and I am able. I am lucky to still have all my limbs. I can still be active. I find fuel in the simple idea that I can run. Some cannot.” (8) Dave McGillivray Boston race director Dave McGillivray has the tradition that each year after he completes his duties he runs the race himself. He’s run the Boston Marathon for 46 consecutive years (16 years as a regular runner and 30 years after the race as the race director) and this year he brought it up to 47 times (he’s run 157 marathons in total). This year’s marathon came just six months after triple bypass surgery. “I would definitely put it up there as the toughest one and the most challenging,” McGillivray said. “But it probably was the most special, given that I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.” The 64-year-old ran Boston this year for Team Big Heart and raised over $100,000 to create awareness about heart illness. “My mission now in life is to create an awareness that just because you’re fit, doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and that if you feel something, do something about it,” he said. “There were times in my life when I thought I was invincible, and I never thought they were warning pains. I just thought they were challenging pains. And now I realize there are warning pains out there, and you have to really recognize the difference and act on them. That’s what I did, and, as a result, I gave myself a second chance.”(9) Sources 1. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2017/04/14/why-a-world-record-set-in-the-boston-marathon-wouldnt-officially-count 2. www.mentalfloss.com/article/27483/11-fast-facts-about-boston-marathon 3. www.podiumrunner.com/gene-dykes-returns-to-the-marathon-distance-monday-in-boston_177008?fbclid=IwAR2Fw99Eid1w1cuxcqVY3-GTDYPHspaTso5nh2cZmEfXdVOcxRIsNMSgF54 4. www.runnersworld.com/news/g27054165/boston-marathon-celebrity-runners/ 5. www.bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/sports/bethesda-runner-extends-boston-marathon-streak/ 6. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/15/in-2011-marko-cheseto-lost-his-feet-to-frostbite-today-he-ran-the-boston-marathon-in-less-than-three-hours 7. www.runnersworld.com/news/a27045741/boston-marathon-results-mens-winner/?source=nl&utm_source=nl_rnw&utm_medium=email&date=041519&src=nl&utm_campaign=16093140&utm_term=AAA%20–%20High%20Minus%20Dormant%20and%2090%20Day%20Non%20Openers 8. www.boston.cbslocal.com/2019/04/15/boston-marathon-man-crawls-across-finish-line/?fbclid=IwAR1JJsU0pddsnpcOOvFxSnGpH546H59yyqBUKQWsqizmnae3hEJMzwGBdnI 9. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/16/after-heart-surgery-dave-mcgillivray-runs-2019-boston-marathon 10. www.marathonmaniacs.com/criteria-faq/ 11. www.100halfmarathonsclub.com/counting.html 12. www.baa.org/ Also Mentioned in This Episode Generation UCAN -the revolutionary new way for runners to fuel. A few years ago, I took a weekend wilderness survival class. Deep in the remote woods of Oregon's coast range, we strung plastic sheets up with fishing line for shelter and practiced signaling with tiny pocket mirrors. Enthralled, I watched as the instructor slowly teased a cotton ball daubed with petroleum jelly into a roaring campfire. Survival class aside, fire starting isn't one of my skills.
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Tom Kennedy hasn't been a hiker all his life; indeed, he came to it relatively recently. He has found a way to foster his love of hiking and hikers by raising money for those suffering from mental health issues. When he discovered the various trails of America he took on the Florida Trail, completing the whole thing other than 20 miles south of Miami. As he says, he spent WAAAY too much time slogging through water. Eventually discovering that he could live happier but financially poorer, Tom founded Hike For Mental Health to assist funding for mental health scientists. You can follow Tom's work (and fun) at http://hikeformentalhealth.org/ as well as on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/iHIKE/. Once the interview was over, Tom and I chatted about how I could get involved in his charity so, at his suggestion, I'll be doing Maryland For Mental Health when I do the AT next year. I hope that some of you come and join me to help raise funds for this critical charity. We introduced a new segment to the show this week, following my visit to the Outdoor Retailer's Summer Market in Denver Colorado. I spoke with our main sponsor, Vince Robichaud of Trailtopia and I urge you, as always, to head over to Trailtopia's site, at https://www.trailtopia.com/ to see their wide range of great tasting food. I also visited with Adyn Soju as she pleasantly explained in detail the intricacies of The Tinkle Belle to this rather uptight Brit. You can find out more about this essential female hiking accessory by visiting the excellent website, https://thetinklebelle.com/. While you're there, check out the awesome video they've put together. Last, though certainly not least, I met the impressive Erica Rosen of Biolite, who told me about the Biolite Camp Stove 2, a new cooking stove that will enable you to put together a small campfire AND charge your phone. She also showed me their impressive solar panels. Once we'd finished the interview she shared the generous mission of Biolite so I switched on the recorder again. You can find the stove at their website, https://www.bioliteenergy.com. There is another great little video on the site, so be sure to check it out.

Morgan Brown currently lives in a vintage VW van, and she has a lot to say about death, dying, and loss. At the age of 22, her mom was killed in a car accident, and since then she’s been looking for ways to give people permission to share their hard stories. Because everyone has them. And because they matter. These stories matter so much that Morgan carries a collapsible phone booth atop her van, the centerpiece for a project she started aptly titled “Conversations I Wish I Had”, driving it to communities looking to share stories of loss to demonstrate the innate need we all have to tell our hard stories, be it to another face or a phone receiver. Laura met with Morgan in Santa Cruz, California to hear her perspective, experience the phone booth firsthand, and join a Conversations I Wish I Had pop-up event to see what others do when given the opportunity to share their tough stories with someone who wants to listen. Learn more about Morgan’s travels through her Instagram and her website, Death Dialogue -> Curious about Morgan’s traveling phone booth? From Glastonbury to The End Of The Road, Summer festivals continue to colonise the countryside. But how do people pull together such enormous events year after year? In our 2017 Summer Festivals Special, Olly meets Pete Lawrence, co-founder of The Big Chill, which went from being a low-key ‘festival in a club’ for 150 people in Islington to an massive outdoor happening, taking over huge venues across Britain, with acts including Lily Allen, The Proclaimers, Basement Jaxx, and Leonard Cohen. How do you choose the perfect location for your booming event? How can you maintain counter-culture ethics whilst wooing corporate sponsors? And how can you keep the Police on-side when so many attendees are doing drugs? Pete - now founder of campfireconvention.uk - reveals all... Meanwhile, in this week’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart - fresh from sitting near Kate Adie at a train station - previews the Summer festivals you’ve never heard of, but should get tickets for NOW. In his top three are G!, in the Faroe Islands; the Archstoyanie Land Art Festival, 200 km southwest of Moscow; and, closer to home, the Brainchild festival, a ‘DIY and volunteer-led festival’ in East Sussex. Also, he explains why every festivalgoer needs a BioLite camping stove and Minipresso portable espresso machine, and receives an exciting invitation to Camp Bestival as part of his quest to become a true trends insider. Elsewhere, Alix Fox brings news of sex festival Swingfields in this week’s Foxhole, and has a surprising suggested use for Original Source Mint and Tea Tree shower gel. She also tackles another prickly listener question - this week, how to speed up ejaculation when trying to conceive a child within your partner’s most fertile window of conception. The Foxhole is sponsored by the sex legends who created mycondom.com. They stock all you need for festive fumble in a tent - or just a bonk in bed at home whilst watching the Glasto coverage on telly. Remember to use our discount code ‘FOXHOLE’ to receive a bewildering 15% off. If you have a question of sex for a future edition, do get in touch via the Feedback form on our website, MODERNMANN.CO.UK. That’s also where to head to buy us a beer, subscribe to the podcast or send us an idea for the show. Finally, our song of the week is by brand new outfit Videocean. They sent us their debut track, ‘Fruitless Fever’, and we loved it. It’s out now on uber-cool underground imprint Bon Nudity.See You Next Tuesday! Presenter: Olly Mann. Wilderness camping offers a wonderful reprieve from our tech-filled lives. Computer screens and connected commutes give way to mountain-peak sunrises and hikes to secluded lakes. The distance from the rat race is rejuvenating. Then night comes, and technology creeps back in. Propane-powered lanterns barely shed enough light for you to see what you're eating for dinner, so you pull out your phone to waste its battery making sure you don't trip over something.
BioLite is an interesting company. Their signature product is a camp stove that burns wood and uses some of the heat to charge a battery, which can, in turn, charge small electronic devices. It's great for camping. But it's also great for people who don't have easy access to electricity or clean-burning fires (which turns out to be a lot of people). On today's show, CEO Jonathan Cedar explains how his company went from simply trying to improve combustion to having offices in India and Africa. Special musical thanks this episode to Jahzzar for "Fire Ahead."
