How to run your Cabinet: Lessons for Starmer

With tensions simmering in Keir Starmer's top team over Labour's approach to the economy, this week host Patrick Baker looks at what the PM might be able to learn about managing your ministers from past Cabinets and examines Starmer's own leadership style. David Owen, former foreign secretary under Jim Callaghan, recounts the IMF crisis in 1976 as an example of Cabinet government at its most effective. Michael Cockerell, the legendary political documentary-maker, describes how Margaret Thatcher and John Major approached their Cabinets and how, despite their contrasting styles, both were undone by their Cabinet ministers in the end. Clare Short, who resigned as Tony Blair's international development secretary over the war in Iraq, argues Blair sidelined the Cabinet as a decision-making body from the beginning of his premiership, preferring instead to rely on a small coterie of advisers or what became known as ‘sofa government'. Cleo Watson, Boris Johnson's former deputy chief of staff, takes us through the Cabinet dynamics of the Johnson era and how Chief Adviser Dominic Cummings saw Cabinet as a rubber-stamping exercise, rather than where the real decisions of government would be taken. Sonia Khan, former adviser to ex-Chancellor Sajid Javid, says ministers often had to linger by the toilet or attend social gatherings to have any chance of influencing Boris Johnson. Luke Sullivan, Keir Starmer's political director while in opposition, says the prime minister likes to let his cabinet ministers get on with their jobs and to solve problems before they reach his desk. And Patrick Maguire, political columnist at The Times and author of ‘Get In: The Inside Story of Labour Under Starmer' delves into the curious dynamics of this current Labour Cabinet and explains how Keir Starmer's leadership style might create a vacuum for others to fill. David Owen has spent the last 60 years at the heart of British politics. After becoming a Labour MP in 1966 and serving as foreign secretary under Jim Callaghan from 1977-1979, he became disillusioned with the direction of the increasingly Left-wing Labour Party. Owen co-founded the Social Democratic Party and went on to lead it twice. In the 1990s, he was an EU peace negotiator in the former Yugoslavia and co-authored the consequential Vance-Owen Peace Plan. He joined UnHerd's Freddie Sayers live at the UnHerd Club, to talk about his life in politics, the ideological shifts of the recent decades and the future of the British Left. Hosted on Acast. In the mid-1990s, Augusta National approached author David Owen about a book project to preserve the legacy of its founder Clifford Roberts. Owen agreed, under one condition: During his reporting he could play the course as much as he liked. The club allowed it, and Owen's book, The Making of the Masters, has since become one of the definitive histories of the tournament. It chronicles the beginnings, inner-workings and evolutions of Augusta National and The Masters, bringing to light a number of previously unreported facts and stories. In this new five-part TGJ Podcast series, Owen shares several chapters from his seminal book along with stories of his time on the course, painting a rich portrait of the tournament that changed golf forever. Another bombshell in the courtroom today as Judge Clifton Newman ruled that testimony regarding Alex Murdaugh's alleged roadside shooting. September 2021,  Murdaugh claimed he asked another man to shoot him so his surviving son could obtain millions in life insurance.  Judge Newman ruled that the roadside shooting would be a “bridge too far” and “does not meet the logical relevancy test.”  In testimony today, the jury in Alex Murdaugh's double murder trial saw more footage of Alex Murdaugh's interviews with state investigators. SLED agent Lt. David Owen testified about his question in of Murdaugh. Owen said at the time Murdaugh was  “the only known suspect” in the case. The footage shows Murdaugh being confronted with inconsistencies in his statements: specifically that Murdaugh claimed he ate dinner with his family, took a nap, and then drove to his mother's. He said he discovered the bodies when he returned.  Regarding the video taken by his son, Murdaugh denies that it is his voice in the video.  Murdaugh tells Owens that at 9 p.m. he was not at the kennels. The fact that Murdaugh had changed clothes was also brought up.   Maggie Murdaugh's sister testified that Alex never seems scared while everyone else was. She also testified that her sister thought Murdaugh had an affair 15 years ago.  Joining Nancy Grace today:  Mark Tate - Trial Attorney- The Tate Law Group Dr. Angela Arnold -Psychiatrist and Expert in the Treatment of Pregnant/Postpartum Women; Former Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology: Emory University   Chris McDonough - Director At the Cold Case Foundation, Former Homicide Detective and Host of YouTube channel- ‘The Interview Room' Dr. Michelle DuPre - Former Forensic Pathologist, Medical Examiner and Detective: Lexington County Sheriff's Department; Author: "Homicide Investigation Field Guide" & "Investigating Child Abuse Field Guide;" Forensic Consultant Anne Emerson - Senior Investigative Reporter, WCIV ABC News 4 (Charleston, SC), Host of Award-Winning DAILY Podcast: "Unsolved South Carolina: The Murdaugh Murders, Money and Mystery;” Twitter: @AnneTEmerson   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
