Prepare the Way Be An Original Luke 1:13-17, Matthew 3:1-6     When you think about John the Baptist, what comes to mind?  “PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD! PREPARE THE WAY!”   Who was John the Baptist? (Luke 1:13-17) 1)   There was great joy and gladness at his birth. (vs 14) a.    God takes joy in you as His unique creation. 2)   He was great in the eyes of the Lord. (vs. 15a) a.    You have great Kingdom purpose.  3)   He was filled with the Holy Spirit. (vs. 15b) a.    You are “packed to the gills” with spiritual gifts. 4)   He turned the hearts of the people. (vs. 17) a.    You are empowered to be a heart-turner.   You can prepare the way for others to know the Lord by being an original: (Matthew 3:1-6) 1)   Discover your purpose as defined by God. -      “Repent of your sins.” (vs. 2a) This is not a popular message:  There's pushback on repentance. 2)   Step into your gifts. -      “…turn to God…” (vs. 2b)  3)   Lead others to Christ. -      “…for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”  (vs. 2c)

Mark 1:1-2 Prepare the Way of the Lord. John the Baptist prepared the way for the King, but have you prepared your heart for the King? As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.” “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’

Today, on this 1st Sunday of Advent Year C, we are commanded by Jesus our brother, to "Watch yourselves... stay awake, praying at all times to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the son of man".Advent presents us with an opportunity prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. A time when we are called upon to be vigilant and anticipate the Lords coming joy in our hearts.The first week of Advent also offers the focus of the Second Coming of Christ.  Jesus will return again, in all splendor and glory, to judge the living and the dead.  We profess that fact every Sunday in our Creed. So, even though Advent is a time for the preparation of the celebration of the first coming of Jesus in the flesh, it is also a time to acknowledge that His first coming is ultimately fulfilled in His final glorious coming.We pray for the grace to get our hearts ready, to open ourselves to his glorious presence. May we be attentive in every way that God choses to come to us.

John asks what gives us joy as we approach Christmas, and then uses the readings from Isaiah and John to explore what gives God joy.

Using Isaiah and Mark John suggests that God did come and is coming ready or not. So what does that mean for us preparing and waiting through this time of Advent? What does that mean for us as people about to celebrate 200 years since Gospel and Anglicanism came to this land?

John was heralding the coming of God almighty, the maker of heaven and earth. John was not making God's presence happen, John was making God's presence known. John was giving us those of us willing to listen fair warning that world as we knew it was about to change, would never, never be the same. John was instructing us to get ready for the change, but in no way did John make us think that God would wait for our preparations.
