Big Smoke Music Weekly goes out with a bang! As Luke heads for the sights and sounds of Melbourne Town, he brings a host of top tier interviews to bring a close to 5 years and 5 seasons of BSMW. The feature interview for this curtain-closer is with the genius that is DMAs guitarist Johnny Took. He sits down with Luke, looking ahead to the band's forthcoming album, How Many Dreams. Johnny opens up on the band exploring new sounds, filling arenas in the UK and growing together as a band. Johnny tells all about how the new album needed to be something that "didn't stink of covid" as they look to maximise a newfound positivity and defiance within their tracks. He also serves up some tips on how to survive the flight to Oz and which snacks Luke should be stuffing his face with. Another Australian outfit with a big future - DICE - drop by for a chat about how their brand of surfer-rock has triggered their meteoric rise down under and what they can achieve moving forward...all whilst squeezing everything they can out of the process. Our last CloseUp 60 Seconds interview is with the brilliant London group, Pynch. And...the circle is complete as we catch up with a guest from Season 1, Charlie Vaughan. Charlie is on hand to chat about how things with his old band, Weird Milk, came to an end and how he came to step out from behind the drumkit! 5 seasons, over 60 artists interviewed, over 60 episodes, countless gigs and festivals and many happy memories made. Tasia and Corinne hit the ground running with one of their most anticipated books of the year: MISTER IMPOSSIBLE by Maggie Stiefvater - book two in the Dreamer Trilogy, after CALL DOWN THE HAWK! We are at our happiest when talking all things Raven Cycle, even if this book gave us all the middle book angst we could ever hope(?) for. We talk dreams, dreamers, industrial espionage, boat dates, lesbian polycules, and so much more! Stick around til the end where we announce what we're covering next - and check out our instagram to get a look at our schedule through July. Pynch (@pynchband) are a London based band made up of four incredibly talented musicians. They recently put out their singles 'Somebody Else' and 'The World's Gone Crazy (For Love)' on vinyl, which can be found on their Bandcamp. It was a great time speaking with them about their experiences so far: playing with the Libertines, touring stories, working with producer extraordinaire Dan Carey, and what's to come in 2021! If you like what you hear do go give them a listen on Spotify, Bandcamp, or wherever you get your tunes. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/londonmusicreview/support
We are joined by friend of the pod Joy to discuss chapters 1-38 of CALL DOWN THE HAWK - the first book in Maggie Stiefvater's DREAMER trilogy. We talk dreamers, dream creatures, dream consequences, Lynch brothers, and, of course, speculate wildly about the upcoming sequel: MISTER IMPOSSIBLE. Spoiler alert: once again, we want to remind you that we WILL be referencing events throughout the entire RAVEN CYCLE universe, up to and including all RAVEN CYCLE books, ancillary materials, and all of CALL DOWN THE HAWK. If you have not yet read these books and don't wish to be spoiled, please save this episode for when you're finished! We are joined by friend of the pod and returning guest Martha to discuss the ancillary material of THE RAVEN CYCLE: the three Christmas short stories and the OPAL novella, all by Maggie Stiefvater. We talk holiday traditions, childhood trauma, dream science, and so much more - including tons of speculation about the DREAMER trilogy. SPOILER ALERT: once again, we want to remind you that we WILL be referencing events throughout the entire series, up to and including book one of the DREAMER trilogy: CALL DOWN THE HAWK. We conclude our deep dive into Maggie Stiefvater's THE RAVEN CYCLE with chapters 33-the end of THE RAVEN KING! We talk possession, grief, closure, and, of course, continue our Pynch meltdown. We also get into our favorite series arcs and characters, and take a look at how they've all grown and evolved since the beginning of the series. THANK YOU SO MUCH for joining us on this journey - we're not done with this universe yet, but this phase of the story has been wrapped up, and we have loved every second of our time talking about it here. SPOILER ALERT: once again, we want to remind you that we WILL be referencing events throughout the entire series, up to and including the OPAL novella, all ancillary stories, and book one of the DREAMER trilogy: CALL DOWN THE HAWK. We are joined by returning guest, friend of the pod Melissa, to discuss chapters 1-32 of Maggie Stiefvater's epic conclusion to THE RAVEN CYCLE: THE RAVEN KING! We talk character growth, cinematic horror, impending doom, and have a collective meltdown over the ship that is Pynch. Oh, and Tasia has another meltdown over Declan Lynch, but what else is new. You know what? This is undeniably our most unhinged episode yet, which is pretty alarming. Enjoy! SPOILER ALERT: once again, we want to remind you that we WILL be referencing events throughout the entire series, up to and including the OPAL novella, all ancillary stories, and book one of the DREAMER trilogy: CALL DOWN THE HAWK. Some new sounds and some all new to you sounds all let's do it papa
Ten episodes ago, the lads recorded one of the more contentious episodes of the season.. debating which decade was better for indie music - 90s or 00s. Joe took the win by convincing Ell that 90s was the better decade for indie music. However, the debate returns, this time as they pit the 70s against the 80s and spend an hour deciding which decade was the superior era for indie. With both having some unbelievable acts to compare, it gets heated rather quickly, especially over whether David Bowie had his prime in the 70s or 80s. Although both decades are evenly matched, Elliott manages to pull out the stops with The Smiths and Stone Roses, as well as examples of how the 80s led to more variety, experimentation and growth of the indie scene. Listen to to see what the final conclusion is, and whether or not there will be a return for battle of the decades!! As always, the lads give a shout out to an up and coming band, this week's being FULLER and PYNCH. Check em both out. We've entered the last week to buy a TSRP t-shirt, before your chance has been lost forever!! Check em out on the socials (@theSRpodcast), and take your chance to buy one if you fancy. This is launching on YouTube at the same time as the podcast, so get over there, subscribe, like and get involved in the comments by letting us know what you think about this weeks debate, 70s or 80s?? Until next week, peace.
