It is among a new generation of African cultural institutions – including the Bet Bi museum in Senegal, by Mariam Kamara, and the Museum of West African Art in Benin City by Adjaye Associates – which in different ways attempts to reimagine both the form and format of the contemporary museum from an African perspective. This week we speak with Seun Oduwole, who lead the design of the John Randle Centre. Oduwole is a Nigerian architect and the Principal Architect at SI.SA, a Lagos-based firm he founded in 2015. He earned his architecture degree from the University of Nottingham and gained experience at Hopkins & Partners, Benoy, and Sheppard Robson. Upon returning to Nigeria, he worked at Shelter Design Partnership and later became a partner at Brown inQ before establishing SI.SA. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The ongoing Nigerian gang wars are a violent manifestation of socio-economic challenges, territorial disputes, and political manipulation that have escalated across various regions in Nigeria. These conflicts often involve rival gangs fighting for control over lucrative illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, and oil theft, particularly in urban areas like Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Benin City. The clashes are driven by a combination of factors, including unemployment, poverty, and the proliferation of small arms, which have made it easier for gangs to acquire weapons and recruit members. Ethnic tensions and historical grievances also play a role, as gangs often form along ethnic lines, leading to more targeted and brutal violence.Political corruption and the use of gangs as tools of intimidation during elections have further complicated the situation. Politicians in Nigeria are often accused of arming and funding gangs to disrupt the political process or secure votes, creating a cycle of violence that extends beyond the electoral period. The Nigerian government and law enforcement agencies face significant challenges in curbing these conflicts due to a lack of resources, corruption within the police force, and the gangs' deep-rooted connections to local communities. The album emerges as a poignant declaration, especially in light of Rema's experiences with misinterpretations of his stage aesthetics—such as Gothic visuals at a London concert—which some mistakenly viewed as dark or sinister. He clarified that these elements actually celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Benin City, his hometown in Nigeria, emphasizing a long-standing personal connection to these symbols.*HEIS* was a surprise release but displays meticulous craftsmanship, starting with the edgy electronic sounds and dynamic beats of "March Am." Rema's vocal style continues to captivate, blending smoothness with intensity across songs that weave together multiple languages including Pidgin, Bini, Yoruba, and English. This album also integrates a diverse mix of musical influences, incorporating genres like trap, house, and pop, alongside West African roots music, melodies reminiscent of West Asian tunes, and cinematic scores. This eclectic fusion underscores Rema's role in illustrating the vast scope of Afrobeat music and the ongoing expansion of Western audiences' appreciation for pan-African talent.

“West African culture is starting to become the future” says Phillip Ihenacho, the director of the newly established Museum of West African Art. What if you built a new museum in West Africa, where a glorious ancient history contrasts with a brutal colonial one? What if we really considered the full meaning of restitution and repair? Can a cultural organisation build a stable financial future by becoming its own landlord? Phillip and his team are building not just a new museum — but an entire neighbourhood set within the ancient walls of Benin City in Edo. Phillip talks to us about how talent and creativity are thriving in West Africa, where 70% of the population is under 30 and he talks frankly about the challenges of developing opportunities and infrastructure. This is an “incredibly important moment”, Phillip says. “We need to try and grab it with both hands, and take full advantage of it.”

On this episode of the Hot Spot series, Gabriel Ornelas sits down with Chef Tolu Eros. Chef Eros is a storyteller, entertainer and African ambassador on a mission to share and explore the wonders of West African food; a food and culture full of life and flavor, just like Eros. Chef's formative years were spent between Benin City and Lagos, Nigeria, where he learned from his mother, “if food does not have love, you might as well not cook it at all!" It is that love for food and for building community that brought Eros to Los Angeles in 2021. The many years he spent in Nigeria honing his ability to entertain and educate through food brought him to the entertainment capital of the world. But not to open a restaurant right away, he started with a series of intimate, well thought out dinners at his personal home, in Hollywood. Eros quickly received critical acclaim from numerous publications and from industry icons like Wolfgang Puck, expressing their excitement and passion for the food and overall experience. His private dinner series is called Ilé, which in the Yoruba language means home, which Eros gives you listeners a look into this memorable experience. His food has and always will be about bringing people together, in a way that is elevated, yet fun, fresh and worth talking about. He also recently opened up Ilé Bistro, in Culver City, which highlights some of his classic favorites, but in a fast casual setting. I encourage you all to head to the show notes while listening to this episode to check out Chef Eros on instagram and his concepts. There is so much more to say, but I'd rather you hear from Chef himself. Listen as we explore his mind and creativity, his vision for continuing build community through West African food culture and what we can expect next from him. A compilation of this week's Witness History episodes. Gerald Clarke, the author of Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, speaks to Max Pearson about the legacy of the stage and screen actress who died in 1969. We also look at how a chance encounter led to the return of two of the looted Benin Bronzes, ancient artworks which were among thousands stolen from Benin City by the British Army in 1897. And we head back to 2008, when a nine-year-old boy tripped over a fossil that would lead to one of the most important discoveries in the history of human evolution. In 2004, a chance encounter in Nigeria led to the return of two of the country's ancient artworks, the looted Benin Bronzes. The treasures were among thousands stolen from Benin City by the British Army in 1897, and acquired by museums around the world. More than a century later, Tim Awoyemi and Steve Dunstone were on a charity trip when they were approached by campaigners demanding the bronzes return. The two men vowed to help, but it took them 10 years before they were able to fulfil that promise, as Tim Awoyemi tells Jane Wilkinson. (Photo: Benin Bronzes, Nigeria, 2014. The British raid of 1897 on Benin City in the Southern Nigerian State of Edo, saw thousands of looted items end up in galleries and Museums across the UK. One recipient was the Horniman Museum and Gardens in South-East London. Only this week, they returned six out of seventy-two items, to Nigeria's National Commission for Museums and Monuments. The remainder will remain on loan for now. Among those items returned are two Benin Bronze Plaques from the Royal Palace of Benin. The BBC's Peter Macjob tells William Crawley about the spiritual significance of these Plaques for the community of Benin. This week's Census results drew out some surprising revelations including a ten-fold rise in those identifying themselves as Shaman. But one particular statistic which grabbed a lot of media attention was that for the first time, fewer than half of people in England and Wales described themselves as Christian. William asks what determines whether Britain is or is not a Christian country with guests Dr Scot Peterson, Lecturer in Politics at the University of Oxford, and Rt Revd Dr. Helen-Ann Hartly, Bishop of Ripon. All through Advent we are teaming up with BBC Radio 3 Saturday Breakfast to bring you some of the nation's favourite Christmas Carol's. This week Presenter Elizabeth Alker meets with one of the original members of The Temptations, Otis Williams, to discuss ‘Silent Night'. And we want to hear from you, what's your favourite Carol and why is it so important to you. We're off! Our interviewee for this first episode of the Design Emergency podcast is the Ghanaian-British architect, David Adjaye. As well as designing some of the most compelling buildings of recent years, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., David is at the forefront of the development of Africa's dynamic architecture scene. In this interview with Design Emergency's co-founder, Alice Rawsthorn, he discusses the challenges and opportunities of designing responsibly in the vast, complex, and intensely eclectic African continent. David – Sir David, as he is now – was born in Tanzania to Ghanian parents. The family lived in several countries during his childhood as his father was a diplomat, eventually settling in London where David studied architecture and founded his practice. Beginning by designing friends' houses, he moved on to cultural spaces including the NMAAHC and the soon to be completed Studio Museum in Harlem. Since 2000, he has conducted a personal research project into Africa's rich, but often ignored architectural heritage. David and his family are now based in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where he leads a studio of over a hundred, mostly young, West African architects working on landmark commissions including the National Cathedral of Ghana and the Edo Museum of West African Art in Benin City. Tune in to hear him discussing those projects, and architecture's role in forging positive change in Africa. You'll find images of the projects David describes in this interview on our Instagram @design.emergency. You can also follow his research into African architecture on his Instagram @adjaye_visual_sketchbook, and find out more about his work at Adjaye Associates on its Instagram @adjayeassociates and its website www.adjaye.com. In 1897 Queen Victoria marked her diamond jubilee and Britain was in a celebratory mood. The British Empire had never been stronger. Few could imagine that this world-spanning empire might very well be peaking. But in 1897 Britain was in no mood for painful self-reflection. Instead Britons were gaily celebrating the what they perceived to be the "triumphs" of empire. Earlier that year a British punitive expedition sacked the West- African city of Benin. The victorious Brits carried off thousands of priceless cultural treasures, many of which were then displayed as trophies of war and instructive curios at the British Museum. The British press had painted Benin City as a hopelessly "savage" place, but these artworks instead reflected a society of great sophistication and artistic skill. Perhaps Britain had been wrong about Benin. How did a British expeditionary force end up at the gates of Benin City in the first place? Tune-in and find out how miscommunications, shady treaties, and pageants with machine guns all play a role in the story.
