Dan Paterson, founder of Questioning Christianity, shares tonight's message, "Has Science Debunked Christianity?" At the end of the day, what is the Good News? What has been happening over the last few years with Christianity? Should we be afraid of science? What gaps have science filled? Can science deepen faith? What does Creation speak of? Truth invites questioning, ask Jesus. This week's passages: Ps 19: 1, Rom 1: 20, Gen 1: 1Date: 12.01.2025Please send prayer requests to prayer@bridgeman.org.au or on our website: www.bridgeman.org.au/prayer/To contact Bridgeman Baptist Community Church please email hello@bridgeman.org.auIf you would like to give at Bridgeman Baptist Community Church please go to www.bridgeman.org.au/giving/Please view our Sermon List if you would like to order from our back catalogue, please email bridgemedia@bridgeman.org.au
Is it acceptable to question God or Christianity if you call yourself a Christian? Does doubt mean you're not truly a Christian? Should faith be so unwavering that questioning is off-limits? Stories that shock us. Laws that unsettle us. Behavior that baffles us. Richard Dawkins once referred to the God of the Old Testament as “arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction.” Is Dawkins' right in his verdict? And if not, how can we read the Old Testament in a way that helps us to make sense not only of the more troubling texts, but of the charatcer of God? Christianity claims to be the only true way to God. Isn't that prideful to say? In this week's message, Nate Miller addresses the accusations against Christianity's claim of being the only true faith. As Christians, we believe the Bible in which Jesus Himself claims “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me” in John 14:6. Many believe that all roads of faith lead to the same higher deity. But this cannot be true! Truth is not subjective. Truth is truth. When looking at the most popular world religions, they are not congruent. They all believe different things about who Jesus was and what His life accomplished. As Christians, we know that Jesus was not just a good teacher, guru, or prophet. He is the Son of God who lived a perfect life, died a death that we deserved and was raised to life, conquering death and sin forever. Our hope is in Jesus and through Him is truly the only way to know God.John 14:6You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. In a cultural moment that encourages sexual freedom, many would say that Christianity's view of sexuality is oppressive. Should sex really be limited to within the confines of a marriage between a husband and a wife? This week, Brian Barr continued in our Questioning Christianity series looking at the Biblical view of sexuality. The Bible is not anti-sex, but when it's used outside of God's design, it brings harm and lasting consequences. Our culture promotes casual hook-ups, pornography, and cohabitation, but there are massive problems with this sexual ethic that leads to selfishness and using others for one's own satisfaction. As followers of Jesus, we are called to lay our own lives down for others and to live for their benefit. This can only be done when we submit ourselves whole heartedly to God and surrender to living our lives according to His ways - even in our sexuality.1 Corinthians 6:19-20You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. Aren't Christianity and Science incompatible? Chris Nagel continued in our Questioning Christianity series this week looking at the question, “Hasn't science disproved Christianity?” Cultural thought is that when you come to Christianity, you have to deny much of modern scientific discovery and leave your brain at the door. But the opposite is true! Christianity and science are complementary! Christianity actually gives a rational basis for science to be possible. God has made Himself known to us through the things He has made. Many allow willful blindness to prevent them from knowing God through scientific discoveries, but God is calling people to open their eyes to see the glory of God and to transfer allegiance from man's truth to God's truth.Romans 1:18-23 You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. What is the source of our suffering? And if God is in control, why doesn't He use his power to end suffering? This week, Jeremy Little continued our series Questioning Christianity looking at how a loving God can allow suffering. The very fact that we are outraged at suffering actually points us to the existence of a God who is the standard of morality and the standard of how things “ought to be”. The Bible teaches us that God is not aloof from our suffering, but has written himself into human history as Jesus Christ who suffered on our behalf. Though we experience suffering because our world is broken by sin, in Jesus our suffering finds a home - a Savior who empathizes with us and who has authority to ultimately deliver us. Like Jesus, we can support others who suffer by empathizing with their pain and also pointing them to the goodness of God who will one day end suffering for His people forever. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10; Isaiah 53:3; Romans 8:18You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. Isn't Christianity a dying religion? Does Christianity really benefit the world? In this week's message, Brian Barr continued our series, Questioning Christianity, by presenting a big picture of global Christianity today. While many claim that the Christian faith is dying, the research disagrees. Jesus told his followers that His global movement would start small, but would continue to spread to the ends of the world, and that is exactly what has happened! Christianity is the largest global religion, and it is the most multi-ethnic, multicultural, diverse movement in all of history. Although the media portrays Christians as being largely hypocritical, stats show that Christians far outpace their non-religious peers in generosity, volunteering, adopting, acts of kindness, and much more. Statistical data alone doesn't prove Christianity to be true, but it shows there is something about Jesus that is different from what the world offers. He really transforms lives. He really is the hope of humanity. He and His movement cannot be easily dismissed as irrelevant.Matthew 13:31-33You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. This week, we kicked off our new sermon series Questioning Christianity. We are living today in a Post-Christian culture where many people are leaving and deconstructing their faith. During the next several weeks, we will evaluate the claims against Christianity and give persuasive reasons for why we believe what we believe and why it's the best hope for the world! In today's message, Chris Nagel evaluates the reliability of the Bible. As followers of Jesus, we treasure Scripture as God's word, preserved throughout centuries, written to us that we might know and believe in Jesus Christ. That through Him, we would find salvation from our sins and a relationship with God the Father. But how can we be sure that what is included in the Bible was what was originally written? How can we be confident that the Bible is an accurate account and not just a legend? Acts 2:42-47
What happens when we die? Where do we go? How does our story end? And what difference should that make for how we live our lives here and now?
The experience of pain and suffering is universal. And one of the most basic, human questions is, "Why?" We have an innate desire to make sense of – to find purpose in – our suffering. We don't want pain to be pointless. This is why we respond the ways we do, especially trying to find (or assign) reasons to our suffering. Most importantly, what are the timeless, biblical resources we have when life hurts to help us discover God's meaning behind it?
Everyone intuitively knows that certain actions are good and other actions are evil, regardless of how anyone feels about it. In other words, morality is not subjective and personal, but objective and universal. There is an absolute standard outside ourselves to which we are all held. This standard is an overflow or reflection of God's character and it's found in the Word of God. This is a standard we obey by trusting God's heart and knowing he intends only good.
What is the purpose of human life? We often default to acting like the goal is little more than happiness and health. Or trying to be a good person, whatever that means. Naturalistic evolution says there isn't a reason or purpose for our lives since we are here by chance. The Bible says we were created to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. It is in savoring God – and being satisfied in him – that we find our purpose.
The human body is made up of numerous complex systems, but are we more than mere machines? And homo sapiens may share 99% of our DNA with chimpanzees, but are we more than mere animals? The Bible asserts that our fundamental nature is this, that we were made in the image of God. Our identity is not what others say of us – or even what we say of ourselves. We are who God says we are in Christ! And our lives have intrinsic worth because we reflect God, we are loved by God, and we are made to live with God forever.
There are countless myths, theories, and beliefs about the origin of the universe and, specifically, of human life. We either came from something personal (God or gods) or impersonal (a process like evolution). We are either the result of time + chance or we are the deliberate creation of a purposeful God. How we answer this foundational question, “Where did I come from?” is vitally important, because it impacts our view of identity, purpose, morality, and more.
For Christians and non-believers alike, there are questions about Christianity that can be difficult to get past. Often leading to roadblocks in the faith causing many to either stop engaging or stop growing altogether.
