We're often bombarded with messages equating success with rapid achievement and instant gratification. Today we are diving into "slow hope," a sustainable form of hope that doesn't rush outcomes but allows time for healing and growth. Unlike traditional hope tied to quick results, slow hope builds resilience over time. Many feel hopeless amid life's challenges or cling desperately to change. Slow hope shifts this perspective by embracing patience and gradual progress. It encourages us not only to focus on end goals but also appreciate the journey itself. Slow hope isn't about instant fixes; it's about steady optimism through small steps toward big goals without burnout or frustration from unmet expectations. Embracing slow hope transforms how we handle uncertainty—building inner strength against setbacks—and fosters long-term personal growth free from constant stressors demanding quick solutions at every turn in our fast-paced world today! Let's break it down… Key Points: Understanding Slow Hope Unlike traditional hope that is tied to specific outcomes or quick resolutions—a mindset that can lead to burnout when things don't go as planned—slow hope is about fostering resilience through patience and trust in life's process. It encourages individuals not just to focus on immediate results but also on gradual progress over time. The Problem with Rapid Progress Our society's obsession with speed can create unrealistic expectations leading many people into cycles of stress or feeling inadequate when they don't achieve their goals quickly enough. By embracing slow hope instead: You release yourself from unnecessary pressures. You open up space for genuine healing. You cultivate an enduring sense of optimism even amidst uncertainty. The Concept of Hope Common perceptions of hope in moments of uncertainty Distinction between traditional hope and slow hope The introduction of 'slow hope'—a sustainable form of optimism Understanding Slow Hope Definition and characteristics of slow hope How slow hope differs from traditional hope Importance and benefits of slow hope in personal growth The Role of Slow Hope in Modern Life Challenges in modern life related to instant gratification and quick fixes The pressure of achieving rapid outcomes How slow hope provides a counterbalance to the fast-paced lifestyle Cultivating Slow Hope Step-by-step guide on how to develop a mindset of slow hope Techniques such as self-reflection, patience cultivation, and mindful progression Importance of breaking down big goals into smaller, manageable steps Embracing Uncertainty and Building Resilience Learning to embrace life's uncertainties through slow hope Building resilience by accepting life's ups and downs How a long-term perspective fosters growth and patience Changing Your Mindset with Slow Hope Shifting focus from immediate outcomes to the process of growth The impact of slow hope on reducing anxiety and stress Enhancing self-esteem and cultivating gratitude for small wins To practice slow hope: 1. Acknowledge where you are. 2. Release pressure for immediate results. 3. Break large goals into manageable steps. 4. Cultivate patience through reflection. 5. Celebrate small wins along the way. This approach reduces anxiety by focusing less on perfectionism or rapid achievements while fostering gratitude for everyday victories. The Power of Patience and Gratitude The crucial role of patience in slow hope Celebrating small victories and maintaining motivation over time Transforming daily life through the practice of gratitude The Quiet Strength of Slow Hope The quiet, persistent nature of slow hope as a force for change Understanding transformation as a journey, not a race Encouragement to embrace slow hope for personal empowerment Conclusion: By incorporating these strategies into everyday life practices consistently overtime will inevitably result increased levels satisfaction derived purely living authentically aligned values held dear personally speaking too importantly so much else besides merely achieving tangible milestones alone… Have you checked out the GYLTG Empowerment Hub on Apple? Hopelessness is more than just a fleeting emotion; it's an overwhelming state that engulfs individuals in feelings of sadness, isolation, and despair. One voice that is often overlooked or not even considered in deliberations about ending homelessness in America is that of people who are experiencing homelessness themselves. That paradigm is being upended by the National Coalition for the Homeless, which organizes, trains and engages people with lived experience as partners at policymaking tables. Their first-hand knowledge of housing and homelessness systems makes them invaluable advisers to US HUD and the CDC and led to the development of tools for getting people out of unsheltered homelessness and to safety during COVID. Their participation in policymaking is supported by the Coalition's Lived Experience Training Academy, a singular resource for effective policy advocacy. As Donald Whitehead, executive director of the Coalition explains on this episode of Power Station, when people do not see themselves in policy making, they feel disengaged. That understanding is what sustains him in the Coalition's current campaign, registering people to vote in shelters across the country, which moves them towards hopefulness, agency and power. Donald Whitehead brings his own lived experience to the daunting but realizable goal of ending homelessness. He is an indispensable leader and an inspiration to me.

With Mesa Farms opening to its first residents this month, it's a good time to re-post our interview with Dan Parziale from 2022. --- Dan Parziale and co-founder Kyle Thompson came together early in the pandemic around the idea that young adults aging out of the foster care system are basically thrown out on their own with few resources or information. No wonder so many end up homeless, perpetuating the cycles of poverty and trauma. Dan, a veteran nonprofit leader, and Kyle, a veteran entrepreneur (co-founder Topa Topa Brewing Co.) bring their special skills and talents to this transitional housing enterprise. They purchased a 10-acre regenerative farm on the East End, brought in tiny homes, and are ready for their first clients. The idea is to take a holistic approach to the differing needs of each of the youth they host, help them build strong relationships with each and within the community, and to use the hard work of regenerative farming as therapy, binding them closer with nature and teaching them useful life skills. The youth come from referrals from social service agencies around Ventura County, and is open to those in need between the ages of 18 and 24. Each client will have their own room, and an individualized plan that includes work training, wellness, therapy and education. The needs are stark. Between 2020 and 2022 homelessness in Ventura County rose more than 25 percent, many of those kids from the foster care system who are ill prepared for the outside world. We also talked about social service agencies, Dan's experiences growing up in Ojai, his education and raising his own children. We did not talk about the pitchers using spitballs, lost technologies in shipbuilding or the Real Housewives of Atlanta. For more information check out www.mesafarm.org

The perfect way to start off our episodes for the month of December is by taking in a musical. Your Halo Halo Podcast co-hosts Jezzie and Sigi had the pleasure of watching Prison Dancer: The Musical--now playing through December 2 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The musical, created by Romeo Candido and Carmen Leilani De Jesus and directed by Nina Lee Aquino is inspired by a 2007 viral You Tube video where 1500 inmates from a prison in Cebu danced to Thriller. Blown away by the music and lyrics by Romeo Candido, Jezzie found underlying messages in the spectacle including, “Dancing gives life”; “Taking responsibility for your life”; and “Asking for what you need.” Dynamic performances from the cast including the “love teams” : Lola (Julio Fuentes) and Shakespeare (Dominique Brillantes); and Christian (Daren Dyhengco) and Cherish (Diana Del Rosario) has the co-hosts floored and clamouring for more. Later, Jezzie outlines the message, “Hope can exist anywhere,” ties into this week's culture capital topic and that hope is “recognizing that there are many ways to accomplish one's goals and not giving up as a result.” If you are in Ottawa, go and see Prison Dancer: The Musical. From the music, dancing, tales of love, hope and having no “regerts”—get your tickets before it is too late!

How would you define the American Dream? For some, it means hard work pays off, and for others, it represents a period of time in their lives. Some believe that time has come to a close. What makes different groups perceive things differently? To find out how culture impacts people's perception of success and what hope has to do with it, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with Leo Pasvolsky Senior Fellow at Brookings, College Park Professor at the University of Maryland, and a Gallup Senior Scientist, Carol Graham. Carol shares the research that supports her book The Power of Hope: How the Science of Well-Being Can Save Us From Despair. Her findings encompass the hopefulness of minority groups, how the political polarization in the US has led to increased despair, and why money doesn't increase happiness or hopefulness.

Today we welcome Dan Tomasulo who is a counseling psychologist, professor, and the Academic Director at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI), Teachers College, Columbia University. He holds a Ph.D. in psychology, an MFA in writing, and a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Dan is also the author of several books, including American Snake Pit and Confessions of a Former Child: A Therapist's Memoir. His latest book is called Learned Hopefulness. In this episode, I talk to Dan Tomasulo about psychodrama and learned hopefulness. Interventions have always focused on helping people recover from trauma but Dan believes we can do more than that through psychodrama. When we re-enact difficult experiences, we can process and integrate trauma in a way that facilitates growth. It also teaches us to perceive obstacles differently, which is integral to learning hopefulness.
