Why did Rolly Crump add a Gypsy Camp to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?In this episode of Distory, we continue motoring through track A of Walt Disney World's extinct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction. As we crash through the kitchen window, we head out into the woods to explore some Rolly Crump posters foreshadowing the camp around the corner. After Kirk does some palm reading and tells Kate's fortune, we do a deep dive into Romani culture and history in order to understand what this unique scene is all about, and why Rolly Crump chose to put it in this attraction. Kirk gets excited about some wagons, Kate teaches us about what instruments should (and should not) be in this scene, and we find a few familiar characters before coming to a screeching halt just before we slam into a sideways caravan door into next scene. Note: We know that “Gypsy” is a derogatory term for the Romani people, but it is historically accurate to this scene as that is how it is described on the 1971 blueprints and layout. So, for the sake of historical accuracy, we do use this terminology in this episode. Join us LIVE on YouTube every Thursday at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

Did Disney World's Mr. Toad steal design elements from another popular Disney attraction? On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we head back to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom to motor our way through Track A of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. But we don't get very far on this madcap adventure, since there are so many details to see in Toad's abode. We start by exploring some of the 3D sculptures and the meaning behind the portraiture in the grand hall before crashing our way into the trophy room. As we wind our way around this unique scene, we find some petticoat duelists, a prop unique to Rolly Crump, and a few animals we've seen before. We wind down this episode in the kitchen, discussing the deeper meaning of the staging of the room and learning a little bit about animation history inspired by a tipsy maid before we screech to a halt and save more of Track A for next week. Mr. Toad moved to Florida for the opening of Walt Disney World... but he was never meant to be there. In this episode of Distory, we hop on over to the Magic Kingdom and explore the history behind why Mr. Toad became part of (yet another) Fantasyland. Along the way, we discuss Rolly Crump (the lead Imagineer of this version) and hear his take on the design of the Magic Kingdom and life in general so that we can more fully understand his work within this iconic attraction. After a thorough look around the exterior and queue, including comparing it to the Disneyland versions both past and present, we find some long-lost WED documents, analyze some changing motorcar designs, and debate the design choices of the character flats on either side of the two tracks.  We finally come to a screeching halt just before entering Toad Hall to allow plenty of time in future episodes to dig into every detail we can find that made this classic ride so delightfully weird and wonderful.Join us LIVE on YouTube every Thursday at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

Perhaps the most iconic ride of all time, "it's a small world" opened at the 1964-1965 World's Fair in New York at the UNICEF pavilion sponsored by Pepsi-Cola and was later moved to Disneyland, opening there in May 1966. Imagineers Mary Blair, Rolly Crump, Blaine Gibson, Marc Davis, Alice Davis, Harriet Burns and Claude Coats worked closely alongside Walt Disney to bring this attraction to life, and the Sherman Brothers (Richard and Robert Sherman) wrote its iconic theme song. With so much incredible history and a compelling message, this attraction is one of the best known in the world, and the song, written as a prayer for peace, is one of the most played songs of all time.   In this podcast episode, we dive into the rich history of "it's a small world" and share some fun facts you might not have known about this attraction. Why was Body Wars so nauseating? And what was Disney's Self-Care Carousel? In this episode of Distory, we live our best life revisiting Epcot's extinct attraction called Body Wars which once resided in the Wonders of Life pavilion. We dig deep into the 1978 roller coaster concepts by Rolly Crump before shrinking ourselves down to explore the inner workings of Epcot's first-ever thrill ride. After some discussion of some classic 80s movies, we find ourselves wondering about the (somewhat) abandoned pavilion, and Kirk gives the world's best impression of the (also extinct) Universe of Energy, just for fun. This week Nick and Rob take a venture into the Twilight Zone where they come up with reasons to not travel to Disney World. While it may seem sacrilegious to some, there are valid reasons why some people might not want to visit the most magical place on earth. Join us as we delve into the following reasons and then some: Crowds: Disney World is notorious for its massive crowds, especially during peak season. For some, the thought of waiting in line for hours on end is simply not worth it. Cost: Disney World can be an expensive destination, from the price of park tickets to lodging and meals. For those on a tight budget, the cost may be prohibitive. Weather: Central Florida is known for its hot and humid climate, which can be uncomfortable for some visitors. Additionally, the area is prone to thunderstorms, which can disrupt park activities. Theme parks may not be everyone's cup of tea: Some people simply don't enjoy theme parks or rides, which make up a large part of the Disney World experience. Better alternatives: For some travelers, there may be other destinations or experiences that they find more appealing. Whether it's a beach vacation, a cultural tour, or a national park adventure, there are countless options out there. Join us as we explore each of these reasons in more detail and discuss why they might be valid concerns for some visitors. And who knows? You might even learn something new that will help you make a more informed decision about whether or not to visit Disney World. In the top of the show, Rob also pays tribute to one of his favorite imagineers and amimators, Rolly Crump. Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. With Tron opening April 4th and running soft openings now, the new Tron merch is out, and it looks pretty awesome! Also, this week Disney announced a bunch of new character-based interactions coming this year. Moana will be on the Floatillas in Animal Kingdom starting April 22. Mirabel will debut in the fall at Fairytail Garden in the Magic Kingdom. And Figment will appear at Imagination Pavillion later this year! Legacy? What is a legacy? With the passing of famous Imagineer and Disney Legend, Rolly Crump, this past week, we wanted to zoom in on the man and really talk about his life and what he's left behind. It takes a special person to recognize their strengths, elevate others, and think outside the box, and that's exactly the type of person Rolly Crump was. From all accounts, he helped others actualize their potential, was revered by Walt, and he is responsible for some of the most iconic designs in Disneyland and Disney World. Crump worked on It's a Small World, The Enchanted Tiki Room, and Haunted Mansion along with countless other projects both in the Disney Parks and beyond. It was a pleasure to learn about the life and contributions of this amazing man, and we think you're going to enjoy it, too! As always, thank you so much for listening! Have a magical week! Welcome to another episode of the RetroWDW Podcast. We have quite a few things in the works, but we felt it was best to put those aside and focus on a Disney Legend who recently passed, Rolly Crump. If you remember back to 2019, the crew from The Lake Buena Vista Historical Society made the journey to California to meet with Rolly. What was initially planned as a quick Q&A, turned into a multi-hour interview with a film crew to properly document this influential imagineer. For this episode, we are using the audio from our YouTube Live event where we honored and discussed Rolly. Throughout this episode, you will hear from our usual team but also special guests Ryan Ritchey, Jeff Heimbuch, and Michael Crawford. Each guest on this episode has a unique connection and perspective with Rolly, which leads to an amazing bunch of stories and memories. Rolly was one of a kind and the main idea that came out of this was his amazing personality and warmth toward fans of his work. We will never forget Rolly and we hope with this episode, you will get a taste of just how amazing a person he was.

This time, it talks about that one time all the countries in the world converged on Flushing Meadows in Queens, and Walt Disney, Pepsi-Cola, the "No Wire Hangers" lady, a team of exhausted overworked Imagineers and of course the songwriters of "Pineapple Princess" all combined efforts to show those countries of the world, "here's what we think you'd look like if you were all adorable doll-children stuck singing the most insufferably insipid melody ever devised until the end of time." Our main topic this month is all about Wonders of Life. With this being Part I, we are just going to scratch the surface about all this pavilion and attraction had to offer. This pavilion is actually still around, the golden dome that is next to Mission: Space, Guardians of the Galaxy, and it also served as a festival center from time to time over the years. How is leading us here in our journey through Wonder of Life, starting us off in 1976. How actually reads to us some of the original sponsorship concepts presented for the EPCOT Project, which are quite fascinating. Rolly Crump was named the show lead on this project and along with Dr. Lewis, following the mindset “If it's a ton of fun, and an ounce of information, we've reached the teachable moment”. The group settled on the eight health habits, which seem to have been lost to history. How gives us his best estimate based on what he found in his research. Using these habits, attractions and shows were developed. As How goes through the early concept pieces for Wonders of Life, we connect the various concepts to the actual attractions that came about. Ideas never really went away and some actually made it to the final show as the years went by. The Tooth Follies is a comical idea that didn't seem to make the final cut, but what a name and also imagine sitting inside the actual mouth. We also discuss the early versions of Body Wars and how they were developed. How gives us so much good info as we can easily compare the development of all these attractions to what really came to be. Part II and probably Part III will be covering all of the attractions you know and love, so please remember to subscribe and get ready for these upcoming episodes.
