Destination D23 took place at Walt Disney World September 8-10, 2023. At the event, we learned more information about what Disney fans can expect from the Disney Parks (announcements and updates were shared for Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, Shanghai Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Disney Cruise Line), Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel, Star Wars, and beyond. We also learned about upcoming D23 events, including updates to the D23 Expo, which will be called D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024. Destination D23 2023 offered so many incredible surprises for Disney fans in attendance and at home.   In this episode, I'm joined by Serena from Living By Disney to recap what we learned and what we're most looking forward to from this year's event announcements and Disney news. Welcome Foolish Mortals! The Haunted Mansion is one of the most beloved attractions ever created for a Disney theme park. It has entertained millions since its original opening in 1969 at Disneyland and has been in one form or another in Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. What makes this attraction work is the creative compromise that Disney Imagineers sought to put into it over the years. We talk about that compromise rare among artists--and how one has to jump "off the page" if you are really going to create an experience as timeless as this one. Because it is beloved, a new Haunted Mansion film came into the theaters. This has not been the blockbuster the Studio hoped it would be. We'll spend a little bit of time conjecturing why this might be. Let's look at the Haunted Mansion and how Creative Compromise is not really, that scary. We believe that you'll find takeaways for you and your organization as far. ____________________________________________________________ More Disney Insights can be found below! Theme parks bounced back in 2022 from pandemic lows with revenue, if not attendance

Last year marked a return to normal for the theme park industry around the world with operators reporting revenues, and in some cases attendance, at par or above pre-pandemic levels, according to a new report. Globally, the theme park industry hit a peak in 2019, the year before the spread of the COVID-19 virus forced many parks and attractions to shut down temporarily and then reopen with restrictions on attendance. Many operators focused on improving visitor experiences through adapting app-based technologies and that paid off with revenues in 2022 that surpassed 2019 levels, even if attendance had not bounced back in the same way, according to the report by the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM, the design and engineering firm. “The pandemic revealed a sophisticated consumer base that is willing to pay more for out-of-home entertainment and experiences. However, consumers also demand more in terms of comfort, ease, quality, and satisfaction,” the report said. “Overall tolerance for big crowds and long waits seems to have gone down.” The theme parks also found ways to add days for lucrative special events that attracted local visitors such as Halloween celebrations at Universal, Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks. In Orlando, Florida, the theme park capital of the U.S., attendance was driven by domestic visitors rather than international travelers, a segment that was hurt by travel restrictions during the height of the pandemic response. The new Super Nintendo World buoyed attendance for Universal Studios Japan, the report said. Some of the most attended theme parks were: Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had 16.8 million visitors, almost double the attendance in 2021 but still below the 18.6 million visitors in 2019; Tokyo Disneyland with 12 million visitors, close to double the numbers from the previous year but still only about two-thirds of 2019's attendance; Tokyo DisneySea with 10.1 million visitors, a three-quarters jump from 2021 but still down two-thirds from 2019; and Universal Studios Japan with 12.3 million visitors, which was more than doubled the attendance from 2021 but still lagging the 14.5 million visitors in 2019. In show business, a gypsy is a term of endearment and respect. A gypsy is a member of the chorus…the ensemble…the singers and dancers who travel from show to show and Bill Disbennett was a true gypsy. Bill has danced all around the world, starting at Six Flags St. Louis and then Opryland USA for 3 years. From there, he danced for Disney in a travel trade show to promote Disney's MGM Studios, performing in 30 cities to get the word out to travel agents about the new theme park. Bill was then hired as a Kid of the Kingdom, where he danced in all of the Castle shows in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World for 5 years. From there, he moved half-way around the world and danced at Tokyo Disneyland for 4 years before coming back to the US to dance in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular in New York City. He then moved from land to sea, where he danced for Disney Cruise Line aboard both the Disney Magic and Wonder and then went back to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. When Bill retired from performing, he went to Meredith Manor International Equestrian Center, taught there for a year, and moved back to Orlando where he had an equestrian business for 13 years. He's now working his dream job at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch where he manages the operation of 40 Ranch Hands and over 100 equines. Enjoy Part 1 of Scott's conversation with the amazing Bill Disbennett! ABOUT JOE LANZISERO: Joe's Profile: linkedin.com/in/joelanziseroEmail: jlmonkeyfez@gmail.comTwitter: joe_lanzisero Website: lanziserocreative.comInstagram: @joelanziseroBIO:JOE LANZISERO Former Creative Executive, Senior Vice President, Hong Kong Disneyland & Disney Cruise Line Portfolios Walt Disney Imagineering, Current Creative and UX Consultant, and Executive Vice President & Creative Director Zeitgeist Design and Production Joe Lanzisero served as the senior creative executive in charge of projects for Walt Disney Imagineering across multiple platforms in the company's cruise, theme park, hotel & resort, restaurant and retail business lines. With more than three decades of Disney experience, Joe worked with teams of artists, writers, architects and engineers, he serves as the eyes and artistic conscience of a project from conception through completion. Joe was responsible for the creative development of the two newest ships for the Disney Cruise Line, and oversaw the teams that designed these new state-of-the-art ships (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy) which launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Many features such as the innovative dinner show “Animation Magic” and the inclusion of an onboard water coaster (the AquaDuck) are cruise industry firsts. At Hong Kong Disneyland, Joe oversaw the expansion of the park by more than 20 percent over a three-year period. The additions of three new lands – Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and most recently, Mystic Point, adds more excitement and fun for guests of all ages. Lanzisero began his Disney career in 1979 in Feature Animation (now Walt Disney Animation Studios), working on the animation, special effects, storyboarding and story development of numerous features, shorts and special project. He came to Imagineering in 1987 as a concept designer and was on the design teams for Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park at Walt Disney World, Critter Country at Disneyland, and Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris. In 1991, Lanzisero was promoted to senior concept designer and immediately plunged into the development of Mickey's Toontown, the wacky cartoon “community” that opened at Disneyland Park in 1993. He also developed the concept for Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, a wild and funny dark ride that opened in Mickey's Toontown the following year. Lanzisero also supervised the concept design for the Tokyo Disneyland version of Toontown that opened in 1996. Before joining the Tokyo Disneyland project team in 1999, he developed the concept for Fantasia Gardens and Winter Summerland, a pair of unique miniature golf courses at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Another new venture, Disney Cruise Line, benefited from his work on children's spaces and activities. And he was behind the 12/10/2013 conceptual design and development of DisneyFest, a unique Disney entertainment venue that traveled throughout the Far East and South America. In 2001 Joe was promoted to creative vice president for Tokyo Disney Resort, charged with overseeing all design in Tokyo. For Tokyo Disney Resort, he worked on such attractions as Pooh's Hunny Hunt, Toontown, Critter Country and Splash Mountain. He did the concept development for Mermaid Lagoon and Arabian Coast in Tokyo DisneySea as well as many other projects. He directed the creative development of Tower of Terror attraction and Monsters, Inc. Ride and Go Seek.In March 2007, Joe was promoted to creative senior vice president with the added responsibilities of overseeing all design for Hong Kong Disneyland, including leading the design of a major three-land expansion of the park. A member of the first graduating class of the Walt Disney Character Animation program at California Institute of the Arts in 1979, Lanzisero developed his artistic talents with old-time Disney professionals. He applied his education as a teacher at the Otis Art Institute and in the animation industry before joining The Walt Disney Company. Currently Joe is a consultant to the Themed Entertainment, Cruise, Museum and Hospitality industries with a portfolio of ongoing international and domestic projects in various stages of design and production. Joe is also actively involved in the UX world and is a sought after speaker in this sector. He has been the Keynote Speaker at the World Usability Congress in Graz Austria and has spoken and consulted on UX to major companies like Macys and Silicon Valley startups. He is also currently Executive Vice President and Creative Director for Zeitgeist Design and Production. Zeitgeist currently has a roster of international and domestic projects. Domestically they are working on high profile museum projects. Internationally they are the creative development team exclusive to Chimelong Resorts in Guangzhou China. Joe is full-time consultant working for visionary clients all over the world. He welcomes the chance to learn more about your big idea and explore ways he might serve you.  SHOW INTRO:Welcome to the NXTLVL Experience Design podcast. Over our 4 seasons we have focused on “Dialogues on DATA: Design Architecture, Technology and the Arts”. NXTLVL features provocateurs for whom disruption and transformation are a way of engaging in work and play every day.Theyinclude thought leaders who are driven by curiosity, a passion to create the ‘New Possible' and a mindset of promoting new paradigms of experiences.  They include leading scientists, artists, musicians, architects, entertainers and story tellers whose research, exploration and built work brings new understanding of the impact and relevance of place-making to the world. On the show, we focus on what's now and what's next.*          *          *          *          *          *          *In this episode we talk about storytelling with a master, Joe Lanzisero former SVP at Walt Disney Imagineering. We'll get to our conversation in a minute but first a few thoughts on why I love this topic:*          *          *          *          *          *          *Stories are powerful. They are among the engines of culture and we have relied on sharing them for millennia as part of our human socio-cultural and spiritual development. We stamped out narratives around tribal fires, shared them on trade routes and built public squares combining commerce and culture through the need to share life experiences with storytelling.Stories are also crucial to our empathic development, as well as providing context to our lives. And stories can also act as path to follow for designers that provides a reference point for design decisions guiding massing or volumes, layouts, use of materials, geometries and other aesthetic choices. Story can be used as a tool to determine the sequence of a brand's signature moments and experiences along a customer journey. The best stories are easy to remember because they paint pictures in our minds that tap into our deep feelings. Because they often create emotional responses and evoke strong visualizations, they play into our long history of communicating through pictures. In many ways, stories are the framework by which we remember things. While the core components of good storytelling may be the same as they have been for years. In fact Joseph Campbell asserted in his book “A hero With A Thousand Faces,” that there was really only one story, a structure that was reinterpreted across time and cultures. The super interesting feature of our brains and stories is that while reading, listening to or watching stories unfold on screen, we develop elaborate mental representations of the situations described in the text, lyrics or scenes. Researchers have gathered evidence through fMRI scans of individuals reading narratives that “the neural responses to particular types of changes in the stories occurred in the vicinity of regions that increase in activity when viewing similar changes, or when carrying out similar activities in the real world.” (see: Reading Stories Activates Neural Representations of Visual and Motor Experiences, Nicole K. Speer, Jeremy R. Reynolds, Khena M. Swallow and M. Zacks, Psychological Science, Volume 20 – No.8, 2009). In other words, as subjects read about characters in a story, their brains react in a manner that is similar to them personally experiencing those characters' situations. Studies by Brian Pulvermüller (see: Pulvermüller F. Brain Mechanisms Linking Language and Action. Nature Reviews Neuroscience. 2005;6:576–582) have demonstrated that brain regions involved in reading action words (verbs) are some of the same regions involved in performing analogous actions in the real world. So, if you read the word “throw” or “catch”, brain regions light up in fMRI scans that are activated when moving one's arm or hands. When engaging with story, our brains react to words as if we're experiencing the story in the real world. Cognitive scientist Roger C. Schank explains that - “Humans are not ideally set up to understand logic; they're ideally set up to understand stories.” I've been fascinated with story for years. Stories were a crucial part of bedtime rituals with my sons when they were young. We were deeply connected to the value of story and their ability to communicate ideas, morals and values. When my older son was very young, he loved stories and asked my wife to read two stories at the same time so that he could introduce the characters from one narrative to those in another book. “no mommy,” he explained “turn dis book towards de other so the characters can see each other too…”So this is where my guest comes into the narrative…JOE LANZISERO is the Former Creative Executive, Senior Vice President, Hong Kong Disneyland & Disney Cruise Line Portfolios Walt Disney Imagineering. He is currently the Creative and UX Consultant, and Executive Vice President & Creative Director Zeitgeist Design and Production.Joe Lanzisero served as the senior creative executive in charge of projects for Walt Disney Imagineering across multiple platforms in the company's cruise, theme park, hotel & resort, restaurant and retail business lines. With more than three decades of Disney experience, Joe worked with teams of artists, writers, architects and engineers, he serves as the eyes and artistic conscience of a project from conception through completion.     Lanzisero began his Disney career in 1979 in Feature Animation (now Walt Disney Animation Studios), working on the animation, special effects, storyboarding and story development of numerous features, shorts and special project. After a number of years and promotions with in the Walt Disney organization Joe was promoted to creative vice president for Tokyo Disney Resort, charged with overseeing all design in Tokyo in 2001 and then again in March 2007 to creative senior vice president with the added responsibilities of overseeing all design for Hong Kong Disneyland, including leading the design of a major three-land expansion of the park. Joe is currently Executive Vice President and Creative Director for Zeitgeist Design and Production and a consultant to the Themed Entertainment, Cruise, Museum and Hospitality industries with a portfolio of ongoing international and domestic projects in various stages of design and production. As a note to the listener, I caught up with Joe Lanzisero, at the SHOP Marketplace event in Austin Texas. The Japanese assignment continues with a mission report from the world's busiest train station. Antony and David relate their remaining Tokyo adventures, including cherry blossom viewings and visiting a location from The Wolverine (2013).  Their next report comes from aboard a ‘Romance Express' (like the one referred to by Tanaka in the novel of You Only Live Twice) travelling from Kyoto to Osaka. Before getting there, they share what it was like to stay in a traditional Japanese inn (as Ian Fleming did when researching Thrilling Cities). They also talk about how they found Kyoto, including its gorgeous temples and gardens (not of the poisonous variety) and ‘all the shrines in the world'. After all of these spiritual experiences, they head for the extreme contrast: Universal Studios in Osaka. While queuing to buy lunch in Super Nintendo World, they talk about different fandoms and speculate about what a 007 theme park might be like. Finally, they discuss public bathing Japanese-style (as in, completely naked), the Japanese musical of Casino Royale, a visit to Himeji Castle (the ninja training school from You Only Live Twice), taking the fastest bullet train back to Tokyo, finding the best Martinis in Tokyo Disneyland and how they managed to have a Bondian adventure on a reasonable budget.

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast! Have you listened to us before? If so, then welcome back! We're clocking in at #349 this week and the duties of finding soundcast clips falls on me. Did you happen to hear last week's episode titled "A Spring Bouquet of Clips" ? It was Epi348 and it featured a trio of clips from the soundcasts FOGO, Tell Me About It, and The Best Show. In addition, that episode featured another drop-in from comedian Dan St. Paul with a selection from his "Slices" blog, and that one was called “The Thai That Unbinds”. It was a fun episode, and I invite you to check it out at your earliest convenience. (I almost forgot to mention that episode was hosted by Marc Hershon, who is the show creator, and executive producer. We've been sharing hosting hosting duties on a more-or-less every-other-weekly basis since episode #201 from May 5th, 2020. That episode was the first episode of the Succotash Shut-In" period of this soundcast, AND the first episode back from our first hiatus, which lasted all of about 2 weeks. I bring up the hiatus in case you hadn't heard episode #348 yet, because it was, in fact, announced at the end of that episode, that Succotash is going on another hiatus soon. There's still a few episodes left until that happens tho, and this is one of them. Then, after we hit our anniversary in April of this year, which is 2023 for those living in the future beyond 2023, assuming the future IS a thing when you are listening…) But importantly, this week, I've got clips for you from the soundcasts Wow in the World, TDR Now Travel Podcast, and Story Pirates.  Two of those soundcasts, specifically Wow in the World" and Story Pirates" were suggested by a list I found in a Good Housekeeping article from March 25th of 2020 titled "21 Entertaining Podcasts for Kids of All Ages". Meanwhile, TDR Now Travel is a family-friendly soundcast that I found thru being a frequent viewer of the YouTube channel "TDR Explorer"… which is also pretty family friendly… but more on that later. So, basically, that's why this episode is entitled "One for the Kids". CLIPS Wow in the World The #1 podcast for kids and their grown-ups. Hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz share stories about the latest news in science, technology, and innovation. Stories that give kids hope, agency and make us all say "WOW"! Detective Mindy and Junior Detective Dennis are determined to find out! Join Mindy, Guy Raz, and the Wow Crew in the mystery of why prehistoric swimming reptile bones were found in the desert. It's the who, what, when, where, how and WOW of ichthyosaurs! TDR Now Travel Podcast A podcast for theme park fans who love to travel! They're the longest-running show dedicated to informing listeners about theme parks in Asia including Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan. Come and travel along with them. I discovered this podcast thru their YouTube videos on "Super Nintendo World" which both my son and I enjoy. This clip is from March 14th, 2023, and is called "Super Nintendo World Differences Japan vs. USA - Episode 278". The hosts, Chris and Patricia, discuss the differences between Super Nintendo World in Japan and the US! From the layout of the land to food to merchandise. They talk about it all! Story PiratesThe award-winning Story Pirates soundcast takes stories written by kids and turns them into sketch comedy and songs. Made up of talented comedians, songwriters, and frequent celebrity guests, the Story Pirates inspire kids to create, bringing laughter to kids and grownups of all ages with hilarious sketches, catchy original songs from all genres, and interviews with the creative geniuses behind the stories… kids! Our clip is from just last week  - March 23rd, 2023 - called "Oh Rats!" And today's new story, hosted by Lee Overtree and Benjamin Salka and dreamed up by a 7-year-old from New Jersey named Alexandra, explores the never-ending real estate struggles between mice and humans. So there you go, kids… or people who have them who also listen to podcasts… or at least WERE/ARE listening to THIS one… This is the end portion of the episode, where we make our goodbyes and I go off to record the vocal performance you are hearing now, after which I will edit everything that you have heard so far together… and that pretty much sums up the process of what came together as the episode you are nearly done with. For the adults in the room, there is a whole archive of episodes over at www.succotashshow.com, as well as on pretty much all the listening platforms that you can, could, or perhaps are, listening on. That particular archive, which is ours, goes back almost 12 years now. It's a pretty nifty thing, and - as far as I can tell - a fairly rare thing in this medium known as the podcast, which we here at Succotash have been calling "soundcasts" for pretty much the entire run. It's been fun. See you in 2 weeks with something… probably less family friendly … so pretty much a normal episode. Thank you for listening. Go to www.tysonsaner.com to find my links to all the stuff I'm doing including original music, gaming videos, and my Redbubble store. Tune in next week for episode #350, I'm sure it will be a good one! Be decent to each other, and if someone should randomly, or perhaps deliberately ask you if you have heard anything good or interesting lately, and that make you think of us…please, pass the Succotash. — Tyson Saner

"I pledge to be a role model and inspire others to always think beyond their limits to achieve things they never dreamed were possible." -Lisa Weightman, Associate Partner at IBM Australia, Olympian, and High-Performance Coach Meet Lisa Weightman, business leader, badass mom, 4X Olympian, and one of the fastest, most inspiring humans I've been blessed to meet. Lisa has overcome a lot to reach the fastest, best version of herself. She is quick to credit those in her inner circle for the key roles they play: her husband Lach for always keeping things light and providing much-needed massage services, coach Dick Telford, and son Pete—who we all know is secretly calling all the shots. Lisa put together a near-perfect training block and then proceeded to pull off one of the most amazing marathon doubles in history—scorching a 2:23 4th place Osaka Marathon (just 10 seconds from 2nd place) followed by a 2:31 13th place finish at Tokyo just 7 days later! Her secret to recovery? A family visit to Tokyo Disneyland between races, where she likely put in more steps than at either marathon... It was so FUN to catch up with Lisa on her PB breakthrough and what goals she is chasing next—running in her 5th Olympics, 10K & half-mile PB attempts, finishing off her Six-Star in Boston next year. For more on Lisa's inspiring journey, check out episode 97 and give her a follow! This weekend Splash Mountain ended at Walt Disney World after more than 30 years of operation. Soon Disneyland, which built the first Splash Mountain, will close as well. While there may be controversy of its replacement, there is no question, this attraction was a brilliant Imagineering masterpiece. Led by designers like Tony Baxter and Bruce Gordon, this attraction did what no other ride or attraction could do--especially for Disneyland and later for Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland. We not only explore the brilliance of this attraction, but celebrate it for what it accomplished. While there is much good regarding the advent of Tiana's Bayou Adventure, there will never be anything like the innovation that is Disney's Splash Mountain. This podcast is dedicated to celebrating this Imagineering masterpiece.

Pirates of the Caribbean is considered to be the last attraction that Walt Disney personally oversaw from beginning to end. This Disneyland classic opened in March of 1967, just a few months of Walt's passing, and has been an integral part of the park for over 55 years. Located in New Orleans Square, this iconic ride has inspired a blockbuster movie series and four additional Pirates of the Caribbean attractions around the world (Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland). It's also my personal favorite attraction at Disneyland Park. In this podcast episode, we discuss the history of Pirates of the Caribbean (the original Disneyland version), including its design, story, music, and Imagineering, along with some fun facts, details, and an audio recording of the attraction (recorded in 2022).
