Today's guest is a 2022 Inductee into Interior Design Hall Of Fame, and he approaches design with 5 key elements; sustainability, technology, the client, timelessness and innovation. He pushes beyond the familiar to create buildings and interiors that are distinctive, imaginative and site specific. Please welcome to the show, Gray Davis! Gray is the Co-Owner & Co-Founder of Meyer Davis, Designer. Gray joins the host Dan Ryan to share his inspirations from the hospitality world and how he journeyed his way through this beautiful industry.Takeaways:  Hospitality is all about the experiences for the guest. It allows the owner or operator of the hotel to be a storyteller and provide the guest with a unique experience that they won't be able to receive elsewhere. When you are designing a hotel, you want to make sure that it is a welcoming environment to the guest, and the best way to do this is by being a good listener. Think about the goals the brand or the client wants to achieve and use it as a guide.  Typically, design firms are focused on one area but you can learn from every project you work on. This prevents people from being pigeonholed and allows a designer to see all the perspectives on different projects.  If Gray could go back and see his younger self, the biggest piece of advice he would offer is to follow your passion. Through all the struggles that he faced, he wouldn't change anything for the outcome he got. At the end of the day, the design for a hotel should be something that puts a smile on someone's face  or shines a light on something that they never knew or thought before.  A great idea can come from anywhere and anyone on the team. It doesn't matter what role they play, whoever has the best idea is the one that you should run with. Quote of the Show:3:24 “There's nothing more rewarding than completing a project, a hotel or resort, somewhere and then seeing how people experience it and react to it.”Links: Website: https://www.meyerdavis.com/ Hoist fixtures: https://rbw.com/collections/hoist Shout Outs:1:21 Will Meyer1:26 Cindy Allen1:27 Interior Design Magazine7:41 Dream Hotel in Nashville9:34 W Hotels10:25 Marriott15:18 Randy Gerber 15:20 Cindy Crawford21:11 Rich, Brilliant and Willing28:53 Stacy Shoemaker28:59 Nick Jones29:01 SoHo House33:56 David Brawley34:40 John Saladino35:03 Four Seasons35:43 Guacame Siegel35:50 Aero35:50 Bill Sofield35:51 Thomas O'Brien36:34 Raul's in SoHo41:53 Red Sea Development CompanyWays to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 YouTube : https://youtu.be/0XKTOcJCBfc

We've been starting this year with optimism. My guest in my last episode was Randy Gerber from Gerber Clarity and we discussed first-generation wealth and wealth transfer. In this episode, I speak with Cliff Bishop of Brady Ware Capital. Cliff is a good friend and colleague of mine. We talk about how he and Brady Ware Capital help business owners and entrepreneurs understand, increase, and unlock the value of their businesses. Cliff talks about how we can help you buy a business, sell a business, raise capital, understand the value of your business, and more. Is this a good time to sell your business? 2021 was an exceptional year. We see all the fundamentals being really strong for 2022. There's just a lot of capital in the market looking for good companies. So the answer is yes! What are the most important factors that drive the valuation of a business? There are a lot of things that are going to drive the ultimate valuation, but a couple of things jump out. One is growth, and the second thing, no matter what the industry, is predictability and recurring or consistent revenue. What is the toughest part of the selling process that you've experienced with business owners? I think without a doubt, it's the due diligence process. Just because it's a very good time to be selling right now and there's a lot of money out there, it's not easy money. What options does an owner have when they're considering the sale and transaction of their business? I think most business owners, there are a lot of business owners that envision that when they sell the business, they're going to call her biggest competitor and they're going to take over. And that the owner is going to clear out their desk and ride into the sunset. And that rarely happens. Cliff goes on to talk about what a business owner is not supposed to do when selling their business. They make mistakes. What are those things that they fall into that can be avoided? And finally, what does a business owner need to do to prepare? And what's the timeline? This is THE podcast that advances women toward economic, social, and political achievement. This episode is going to be about a topic that I love. The importance of the marketplace in our country and small businesses. Small business is so important. It's so important to our economy that it needs to work and work well. Owning and running a successful small business is knowing what you do, finding your purpose, living out your "why." I can't think of a better person to talk to than Randy Gerber, and his company, Gerber Clarity, catch his optimism about the marketplace and what he sees about this coming year. Randy and his team work primarily with first-generation entrepreneurs. Part of the reason why is first-generation entrepreneurs are optimistic, cup half full, people to begin with. They help them understand how to grow their business with purpose. We talk a bit about his book, The Integrated Entrepreneur: Achieving Happiness in Relationships, Business & Life. The book came about from his realization of how difficult it is to be "the new guy" in any given market. He recognized that if he was going to really work with these first-generation entrepreneurs, he had to help them with things other than traditional financial planning because they have unique needs and unique perspectives. This realization and experience helped him write the book. I ask Randy what's the biggest misconception that business owners have about growing their business? In my experience, it's they think they need to grow too quickly, and particularly if the question is rephrased, is what are the biggest misconceptions for small businesses or emerging businesses? I am just convinced that businesses grow too quickly. How should business owners grow with purpose? If you could sit down and really understand how you want to live your life. What do you want to do? How do you want to do it? What do you want to do? Who do you want to do it with? Want-based questions versus need-based questions. That will give you a clear map. What are the top three things that women should be considering or putting in place with their business today? Realignment (not resignation), double-down, and become outcome-oriented. Randy talks about what he has learned about being a leader during times of uncertainty with his business, and what he wants business leaders to know? I think that you really have to be super as a leader, be super cognizant of your culture during times of duress. And one of the things that I've preached to our clients all the time, whether you are male, female, doesn't matter, if you're a first generation entrepreneur, you're a unique breed, to begin with. You're willing to accept variability risk volatility. Entrepreneurs' Organization is the world's only peer-to-peer network exclusively for entrepreneurs. EO helps transform the lives of those who transform the world. Randy talks about his work and time with EO. This is THE podcast that advances women toward economic, social, and political achievement. This week Randy Gerber shares how entrepreneurs and leaders can help their team focus on metrics beyond profit and loss in order to increase performance and overall organizational success. Listen in as Deborah and Randy discuss how purpose plays into goals, what to do when you're not seeing results, and how passion increases growth. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Randy knew he was called to do something different. He moved away from his family and the wings at Barbell Bill Tavern (his favorite food to this day), to attend The Ohio State University where he graduated from the Fisher College of Business. Bypassing the "safety" of a corporate career, he founded his own business in 1991. Gerber, LLC is a professional services business focused solely on improving the business and overall happiness of first-generation entrepreneurs. His holistic approach integrates his clients' personal ideas and aspirations with their business, life and financial goals. His business has 16 employees and has served over 200 clients. Randy is publishing his first book, "The Integrated Entrepreneur: Achieving Happiness in Relationships, Business & Life" a decade-long project his friends teased would never get done. But it will be worth the wait. It describes how first-generation entrepreneurs can integrate work demands with the many personal relationships in life throughout the five stages of success and two stages of temporary failure. Citing personal experience and real-world examples, Randy's book is a must-read for any entrepreneur seeking the clarity and direction to be a success in both business and life. Randy Gerber is an original EO member of the Columbus chapter. On today’s episode, he shares his story of breaking off the traditional path and discovering what he really wanted to do. He talks about starting Gerber LLC, and some of the challenges and triumphs they faced as they rebranded to support first-generation entrepreneurs with financial planning.   Key Takeaways: [:35] Randy grew up in sort of a “traditional” background, thinking he would get an engineering degree and then get a job in the work force, because that is what he was already surrounded by. He went to Ohio State for engineering, and joined a fraternity and learned two things: 1. Many of his friends’ parents owned businesses and 2. He had some natural raw leadership skills. [4:42] During his sophomore year, he realized that he didn’t want to be an engineer. He got a job as an intern at a financial planning company, and decided that was the path he was going to pursue. [6:50] He started his business in late 1990, and watching the stock market of the late ’90s into 2000, he was able to notice who he wanted to work for — business owners. First generation entrepreneurs have an innovative, optimistic outlook on things, and by 2010 their book of business was nearly all first-generation entrepreneurs. [9:35] Throughout this time Randy also got married and started his family. In addition to the changes in his business and his family, Gerber got sued in 2006. The timing was pretty unfortunate, but they were able to settle the lawsuit for significantly less than they were sued. The positive by-product that came out of the whole ordeal was that it caused Randy to reevaluate all their business processes to make sure they were doing everything the right way. [13:53] Randy was already a part of EO during this time (joined in 1999), and his forum was a terrific support system for him through the lawsuit. [15:08] Randy talks about some of the other highs and lows of the companies. In 2010 they officially decided to rebrand for first generation entrepreneurs, which was one of the biggest highs. [16:45] Looking forward, Randy and his wife are going to be in a movie coming out next year. They have also launched an emerging entrepreneur product (for $300k - $1 million in sales), which is designed to help that entrepreneur make the right decision at the right time. It is a year-long program with nine sessions. Hopefully this piece can be scaled to other entrepreneurial marketplaces. [22:30] For the Columbus chapter of EO, the accelerator program is the next big thing — hopefully in the next three years. This would be a great way to feed the energy in Columbus!   Mentioned in This Episode: Columbus Chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization Gerber LLC Gerber Emerging
