Day 22- Keeping It Simple (transcript) Read the Word: Romans 7:15-20    Read today’s scriptures and take note of anything that catches your heart. What do you observe that God might want you to single out and pray about? Write down your observations. I used to think New Year’s resolutions were a good idea. I mean, they are the perfect motivator for a person like me who likes goals and charts. For years I spent the last two weeks of every year pouring over the year before and prayerfully considering where I needed to be focusing my energies in the coming year in my career. One year I even spent $300 on a course that was designed to help me do this more efficiently. But two years later I had some major life challenges and I realized that this system didn’t allow for interruptions or detours. There was no wiggle room in my big plan to success. I sort of lost my motivation the following December to tackle the whole process again.  Then I read a book by Robert D. Smith called 20,000 Days And Counting, and I realized that the most important thing to master in life was today. In that short, power-packed book I learned more about following God than any Bible study I had read up to that point.  I learned that I could not plot out the perfect Christian life (surprise-surprise) and no amount of goal setting or spread-sheeting was going to get me there. It was about lifestyle priorities and living each day with those in mind.  And thanks to Robert D. Smith, I can tell your exactly how many days old I am—I put it in my journal every day.   Paul had a zest for living for today that was unparalleled in the Bible. On any given day he didn’t know if he was going to be thrown in jail, stoned, or called before the highest authority in the land to preach the gospel. And he didn’t care. He just took what came and did what he was called to do with every ounce of energy he had. And Paul wasn’t perfect…and he knew it.  “ I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.  And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.  For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. ” (Romans 7:15-20)  Paul understood the pull sin has on us after we are saved. We never get rid of that sinful nature. It is with us fighting every step of the way until we die. We are human. In this passage he is telling us that we have to recognize that—that sin’s pull still lives in us. We don’t want to follow its desire, but sometimes we do. And that is not failure because God knows we can’t be perfect. That’s why Jesus died for us. He didn’t die to give us sinless perfection, just a way back when we need forgiveness.   Friend, if you are a Christ follower, if you’ve trusted Jesus to be your Savior from sin and desire to live a life fully dedicated to following where he leads, then you’re good. Just keep on keeping on. Life has disruptions. We screw up. People we love leave or disappoint us. We can’t make heaven on earth, but we can set our hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God…and He is smiling down on us. You don’t need to be perfect. God just wants your heart. Keep it real simple.  Wait in prayer:  Today, write out a prayer thanking God for sending Jesus so you don’t have to be perfect. Ask God to help you not get discouraged when you don’t do the good thing you want to do. Ask Him to help you embrace your everyday ordinary life one day at a time.  Worship: Love God, Love People performed by Danny Gokey  Links (click 'em, they're live) Link to lyric video Love God, Love People by Danny Gokey Link to the book 20,000 Days And Counting by Robert D Smith Link to get your free advance copy of The Mary Answer and join our launch team.

If you're not moving forward, you're moving backward. Change is inevitable. Are you allowing the change to take its own course or are you creating the change you want? This fact is true in every facet of our lives. In sales, business, health, financial or personal relationships, there is no such thing as the status quo. Ignoring them will not make them improve. Last week I had coffee with a coaching client who is thirty years old, single, in great health and seems to have everything “under control”. However, he is discontent and stuck but so warm and happy that he is scared to take step of faith to move out of the rut he is in. He is in comfortable misery. Unless he decides to step out on faith and do something new, he will have the same conversation with someone else when he is forty. If you are in business or you are in sales, introduce yourself to a new set of customers or some that you have not done business with in a while. Introduce a new product or service to these prospects and set some new goals in this area to grow your sales. You must keep your sales funnel full. In order to do this, you must plans months in advance. That makes it impossible to celebrate that big sale for too long. You must move forward breaking new ground. Are you like the gentleman I mentioned earlier who needs a new challenge in his career and personal life? Create a plan of action and make it happen. If you need help in this area, visit 48Days.com for the volumes of resources my friend Dan Miller provides. I know you get tired and you should make rest and renewal a part of your life. Just refuse to stay there too long. There is no such thing as maintenance. Robert D. Smith, author of 20,000 Days and Counting, told me that the reason Andy Andrews career has sustained and grown over the last thirty plus years is because they never stop asking themselves, “what's next?” Have a great week! I vividly recall ringing the doorbell and hearing a voice call out, “Pierce, is that you!” It was fall of 2011 and the first time I met Robert D. Smith. I was immediately swept away by his enthusiasm and knew he was one of a kind. He is known as “The Robert D.” and has spent the last thirty plus years managing the career of best selling author Andy Andrews. People that know him have been clamoring for him to write a book for many years and it has finally arrived. 20,000 Days and Counting: The Crash Course for Mastering Your Life Right Now is a compilation of everything he lives and teaches. After using an age calculator, he learned that he was approaching day twenty thousand. He celebrated this milestone by planning his next twenty thousand days. Frankly, I cannot think of a better way to start 2013. In about a hundred pages that you could read in an hour, Robert shares how you can make today and every day count. Most people count their life in years. He believes you should make today count. Live like it is your last. His message is contagious and impactful. You will learn why you can never be too generous, why he eats dessert first and how you can wake up every day grateful and full of anticipation. Thank you Robert D. for this gift. I plan to read it every month of 2013. Click here to sign up for his blog and hear more from Robert D. and get a free copy of his e-book Battle Tested Branding. If you are reading this, the world has not ended…yet. Ebenezer Scrooge and George Bailey faced pivotal moments in their lives during Christmas. Scrooge, a miserable self-absorbed man with all of the wealth he could accumulate. George, a miserable man who gave all he had for the people of a small town. Two men with different perspectives. Both miserable. I came to this conclusion while watching Jim Carey's version of The Christmas Carol when Scrooge asked his nephew Fred, “How can you be so happy when you have so little?” Fred responds, “How can you be so miserable when you have so much?” Both of these men were confronted with their pasts, though quite different, and gained a new perspective about what is truly important. In both cases, it was people that mattered. It's all about perspective. If the world does not end today, it will be like every other day. I will be expectant and thankful and moving forward with life. If the world ends, then I welcome it knowing that I have told and showed those who are dear to me how much I love and care for them. I am at peace with God and understand His Grace and love for me. It has been an amazing year at our house. My son Nick has built a successful Personal Training Company and got married. We are so blessed to have Darci as part of our family. My son Nathan graduated college and is now on a two-year adventure in Asia. This was a dream of his and it will be our first Christmas in twenty-three years without him. Lesa and I celebrated twenty-eight years together and have never been happier. In the next few days I will be reviewing an amazing book by Robert D. Smith entitled 20,000 Days and Counting. He believes that we should not count our time on earth in years, but days. We should make every day count! Today I have been alive 18,064 days and it is truly a Wonderful Life. Merry Christmas from my family to yours. Pierce

I Eat No's For Breakfast

I do not know anyone who enjoys rejection. It probably started when we were curious toddlers getting our hand slapped and being told no over and over. However, it is helpful to understand that a no can mean many things. The worst case scenario is that you are one step closer to a yes! Recently, I had the pleasure of having breakfast with David Loy, COO of Andy Andrew'sorganization and we were discussing perseverance. He mentioned that Andy's business manager Robert D. Smith claims, “I eat no's for breakfast.” Robert understands this philosophy considering that Andy Andrew's bestselling book “The Traveler's Gift” was rejected by fifty-one publishers before going on to sell millions of copies. Unless you boast a closing percentage of one hundred percent then you will feel the sting of rejection. For example, if you have a closing percentage of sixty percent then four out of ten people are choosing to not do business with you. There are numerous reasons why a prospect will say no to your offering. Here a few things to remember in the process. Don't take it personally. You will win some and lose some. You may or may not be to blame for the decision of your prospect, however, spending too much time in mourning over a lost sale will cause you to lose momentum when you should be looking at ways to improve and move on to the next prospect. Don't close the door. Be gracious and thank them for their time. Make sure you leave the door open for future opportunities. They may have a good reason for not buying and if you approach them with the correct attitude, they will be more likely to explain why you lost the deal and give you hints on how you can work with them on a future project. What did you learn? If you did not learn something from the experience, you are missing a valuable opportunity to improve. If the no was your fault, you should want to know why. It is possible that you did not listen intently to their needs or you did not spend enough time building trust and rapport. You must also consider that your proposal was rejected due to price or a relationship with a competitor, but it could be that the project was abandoned due to funding. Consider this the next time you are rejected. Beethoven was told he was hopeless and would never compose. Elvis was told to go back and drive a truck. Walt Disney was fired and told he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. Edison was told he was too stupid to learn anything. I will save Abraham Lincoln for another blog. Have a great week! Pierce
