On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon dive into the LDS Gospel Library to take a look at church history stories especially for kids. The stories are faith promoting in what they do share but it's what they don't talk about that is the most revealing. We also cover the new introduction to The Book of Mormon, another example of leaving the rest of the story out. In addition to touching on a recent Christmas devotional address by Dallin Oaks as an example of the same technique. Thanks to our good friend, Ron Yorgason (Master Peace) for making us all aware of these stories.***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here:DONATE THROUGH DONORBOXhttps://donorbox.org/mormonish-podcastMormonish Podcast is a 501(c) (3) https://donorbox.org/mormonish-podcast ****WE HAVE MERCH! **** If you'd like to purchase Mormonish Merch, you can visit our Merch store here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/mormonishmerch We appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! Eric Kapitulik, founder and CEO of the Program Leadership, highlights the dual roles of being an effective team member and leader across various teams. Stressing the importance of excelling in both, he notes that while organizational values differ, establishing clear values is crucial. He points out that effective communication and developing a culture of accountability are key to success. Eric emphasizes that maintaining long-term success, regardless of external factors, requires a steadfast commitment to promoting a culture of accountability individually and within teams. As the conclusion of the podcast, Eric relays a moving and powerful story from his experience as a young leader. Key Takeaways: [03:13] Eric reflects on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and shares the varying levels of resilience observed in people and organizations. He acknowledges the importance of teaching resilience, but emphasizes the deficiency in its practical development. Eric stresses the need for intentional stress inoculation, pushing oneself beyond the comfort zone, both physically and mentally. [5:51] He shares his own distinction between labeling experiences as "challenging" instead of using the word "hard." Eric also shares that the only truly "hard" experience in his life is someone's death, but with other challenges, viewing them as opportunities for growth and improvement rather than genuine hardship. He acknowledges the universal nature of facing challenges and highlights the importance of embracing them as chances to grow and get better. [8:10] Eric mentions that, while he is the program's founder, he attributes its success to the collaborative efforts of the team. He recognizes that with effective communication and leadership skills, the program evolved and now collaborates with 160 athletic teams annually. [12:14] He acknowledges the challenges of creating stable plans, as circumstances tend to change every six months, in discussing long-term planning. Despite having financial goals for the program, he emphasizes the importance of standards over goals. While goals focus on performance, standards revolve around behavior. The uniqueness of the program lies in the need to embody their advice authentically. Rather than solely concentrating on goals, he explains the significance of daily behavior in achieving success; when standards are consistently upheld, desired outcomes naturally follow. [14:48] Eric explains the systemic nature of goal-setting within organizations, driven by the benefits of achievement and consequences of failure. Leaders are encouraged to identify and communicate their organizational values, which become the foundation of the company's culture. Daily standards, aligned with these values, are considered crucial for reinforcing the desired culture. He then highlights the challenge of claiming a culture, such as discipline, without consistent daily adherence to established standards. Eric gives focus on the significance of organizations being true to their stated values, implementing standards that support them, and fostering a culture of accountability for sustained success. [17:44] He mentions the importance of reinforcing positive behavior in addition to holding individuals accountable for not meeting standards. Eric advocates for fostering courage in everyday situations, such as addressing bullying or having children take responsibility for their actions. He also shares the need for consistent debriefs within organizations to assess what's going well, what needs improvement, and promote a continuous improvement mindset. [24:30] Eric emphasizes the importance of both individual and team roles in achieving success. He explains the dual responsibilities of being a great teammate and leader on various teams, and there is a need to excel in both roles. However, he acknowledges that values may differ across organizations but also stresses the importance of having clear values. He shares the key factors for success, which are effective communication and fostering a culture of accountability. Long-term success, regardless of external factors, requires a non-negotiable commitment to a culture of accountability at both the personal and team levels. [27:44] As he reflects on his past mistakes, Eric acknowledges the profound impact of a specific realization—being the man one would want their daughter to marry. This shift in perspective becomes a pivotal point for Eric, and addresses the need to overcome the impulse to prove oneself right, and there must be value of open discussions and being receptive to improvement. Although the journey towards improvement must be embraced, he still encourages a mindset of continuous growth and learning. [35:21] Eric reflects on one of his experiences in his military days, he reinforces the importance of demonstrating courage in the face of fear. Eric urges leaders to embrace moments that make them nervous, emphasizing the value of making choices aligned with one's principles to avoid living with regret. He draws parallels to personal growth and change, and the transformative power of courage in leadership. [37:18] Closing Quote: Remember, no person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave. - Calvin Coolidge Quotable Quotes: "We need to be deliberate about stress inoculation, both as individuals and as a team.” “We must expose ourselves to uncomfortable situations, holistically, to expand our comfort zones and enhance our resilience.” "Everything we do on a day-to-day basis is challenging." "The only hard thing for us is death, but the rest are challenges." "If you can't effectively communicate, you can't lead.” "Standards are behavior-based; goals are performance-based." "Goals reinforce what we want to achieve, while standards reinforce how we are expected to behave while achieving them." "There are benefits for achieving goals, and there's systemically consequences if we don't." "As leaders, find out your value system as an organization." "Things always change, so you need to look at everything to make the best decision." "The keys to success include figuring out values, establishing standards that reinforce those values, and fostering a culture of accountability around them." SEASON 2 EPISODE 147: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Those were Trump's marbles he just lost. At 2:49 PM, Eastern Dementia Time: “I'm not running to terminate the ACA, as crooked Joe BUDEN… DIS-INFORMATES and MIS-INFORMATES all the time, I'm running to CLOSE THE BORDER..." There is no such word as “Disinformate.” There is also no such word as “MIS-informate.” Also, unless I've been getting it wrong since 1973, "BUDEN" is not how the president spells his name. Trump's cheese has slid off his cracker. It is impossible to say that he cannot possibly last like this, what with the forces of aphasia and dementia and narcissism and head injury and whatever else there is, pulling him apart… but of course he's lasted in approximately this same space for months now – and in spaces not really that much BETTER than this one for years and decades and if the early anecdotes are correct, a lifetime. Still: inventing your own words, is a sign of a dozen different PHYSICAL problems, to say nothing of psychological ones like bipolarity and environmental ones like huffing D-Con Roach Room Fogger. HELP ME RONNA, HELP HELP ME RONNA: And now she belongs to the ages. Five days, one show. Not the shortest tenure in television history nor the fastest-cancelled program (still held by an ABC comedy show from 1969, cancelled just before the first commercial). But NBC's decision to ax Ronna McDaniel - no matter how tortured, self-serving, and late the protests from its stars might have been, does offer some small hope. The point of all this – and perhaps the value of this internal rebellion – is that perhaps the somnambulant American political media, especially the American TELEVISION political media – has awakened from its naïve stupor. I have been saying here for eighteen months that EVERY news organization in this country has had the same meeting: what do we do if Trump regains power. Not “what do we do journalistically” but what do we do to protect our profits – and what do we do so when Trump starts jailing reporters and TV executives, he'll leave us alone. Or, more realistically, he'll let us become one of his propaganda channels. Remember, in the minds of its executives, television news isn't a kind of NEWS, it's a kind of TELEVISION. It is designed to fill the places between the commercials. If it serves some kind of public purpose, hey, great, as long as that doesn't mean we have to go TOO many hours cancelling all those advertisements just because some POPE died or something. Putting Trump on and taking Mehdi Hasan off and hiring Ronna McDaniel was INOCULATION, nothing more, nothing less. It was proving to Trump and the MAGAs that while no, we aren't shuttering MSNBC and we're not in favor of this whole “end the peaceful transfer of power” and “fascism is the new democracy” stuff – hey, go on… we're listening. American TV news isn't going to save us from creeping fascism. But maybe – MAYBE – the scattered, largely selfish, righteous-ehhh-kinda righteous indignation at NBC means American TV news will stop HELPING fascism creep faster. Guard rail? No. Scattering spike strips across democracy's highways? Uhh, ok, maybe we'll stop. Also, I sing. I mean: "Help Me Ronna"? I was supposed to RESTRAIN myself from THAT? B-Block (30:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Congressman Tim Burchett sued by the Kansas City man he claimed was a) a Super Bowl parade shooter and b) an "illegal alien." He was neither. Ari Fleischer actually slams Biden for supporting George W. Bush's war in Iraq that Ari helped sell to a gullible America. And Maria Bartiromo, Nancy Mace, David Sabatini, Matt Schlapp, Glenn Thrush and a random named Rose Graham share the honors for spreading conspiracy theories about the Baltimore bridge accident. C-Block (42:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I mentioned those tortured anti-Ronna comments from MSNBC. Lawrence O'Donnell was astonishingly wrong in his recap of how TV news in the old days didn't reward, say, Nixon's Watergate conspirators with gigs (other than Pat Buchanan, John Ehrlichmann, Robert Bork, Gordon Liddy, plus Ollie North from Iran-Contra and a series of ice cream commercials for Ehrlichmann). Since I've brought him up, I might as well tell you what a schmuck he is, Like when he guest hosted Countdown and while I was out a few weeks, he tried to get me fired so he could take over the show and when that didn't work he just stole a couple of the producers and got his own show. Oh, by the way, I WAS away for a couple weeks because my Dad was dying.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Broadly speaking her research focuses on how groups act as sources of influence on our judgments and beliefs: including how intergroup biases impact our ability to assess the veracity of information, and how social cues and interactions with other people affect individual-level cognition. In this episode, we talk about misinformation. We start by discussing what misinformation is. We talk about perceived source similarity and perceived source credibility. We discuss if liberals and conservatives are equally susceptible to misinformation. We talk about motivated cognition. We discuss inattention accounts of the sharing of fake news. We get into interventions to reduce susceptibility to fake news, and discuss how they are measured; debunking and prebunking approaches; inoculation theory; fact-based and technique-based approaches; and how effective inoculation against misinformation is. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
In this episode of The Brainy Business podcast, social psychologist and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab, Sander van der Linden, joins host Melina Palmer to discuss the role of critical thinking and emotions in resisting misinformation. Sander's extensive research on the influence of repetition and the illusory truth effect make him a trusted authority on the subject. The conversation serves as a valuable resource for critical thinkers concerned about misinformation in today's digital landscape. Van der Linden explains how repetition can lead people to question their own knowledge and accept false information as true, highlighting the illusory truth effect. He also discusses the conjunction fallacy and the self-sealing belief system of conspiracy theorists. The episode delves into the concept of inoculation as a strategy to combat misinformation, providing insights on how to build cognitive antibodies to resist manipulation. Overall, the conversation offers practical tips and insights for improving critical thinking skills and navigating the complex world of misinformation. In this episode: Gain a deeper understanding of the pervasive impact of misinformation in today's society. Discover how the illusory truth effect influences belief formation and the way we perceive information. Explore the complexity of conspiracy theories and the conjunction fallacy, and how they can contribute to the spread of misinformation. Learn about the powerful strategy of inoculation as a means to combat misinformation and manipulation. Understand the crucial role that critical thinking and emotions play in resisting misinformation and making informed decisions. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Sander is a professor of Social Psychology at the University of Cambridge. He studies how people process misinformation and how to combat its spread. He shares his expertise with governments, public health authorities, and social media companies. 00:04:41 - The challenges of researching historical accounts Sander discusses the difficulties of researching historical accounts for his book. He had to navigate competing historical viewpoints and verify the accuracy of information. He shares the example of a disputed document regarding Mark Antony's will as an example of the challenges faced in historical research. 00:09:01 - Writing process and structure of the book Sander talks about his writing process and the structure of the book. He waited until he had enough data and case studies before starting. Once he had the general structure and outline, he began filling in the individual chapters. Sander emphasizes the importance of having a clear direction before starting to write. 00:12:40 - The impact of misinformation on decision-making Sander explains how misinformation can influence decision-making. He discusses the cognitive biases that help our minds accept false information. 00:15:47 - Illusory Truth Effect and Repetition, Repetition of false information can lead people to believe it, even if they have prior knowledge that contradicts it. This is known as the illusory truth effect. Examples include misattributing the ark to Moses instead of Noah, and the power of the "big lie" technique used by Hitler. 00:18:10 - Continued Influence of Misinformation, Misinformation can persist and strengthen over time, making it difficult to correct. The continued influence of misinformation is similar to how memories are connected in a social network. Once a false belief is established, it can be challenging to change it, as seen with the autism vaccination link myth. 00:19:49 - Conjunction Fallacy and Conspiracy Theories, The conjunction fallacy refers to the tendency to believe that multiple conspiracy theories are more likely to be true than a single one. People often endorse multiple conspiracy theories simultaneously, even if they are mutually exclusive. This is due to a self-sealing belief system where one theory serves as evidence for another. 00:25:46 - Visual Misinformation and Manipulated Images, Visual misinformation is prevalent and often underestimated. Manipulated images enhance fluency and make information seem more true. Examples include fake images of dolphins in the canals of Venice during the pandemic. It is challenging to correct false beliefs once they have been visualized. 00:31:28 - Introduction to Inoculation, Inoculation is about exposing people to a weakened dose of misinformation and refuting it in advance. It builds cognitive antibodies to help resist manipulation. The mind can be vaccinated against manipulation just as the body can be vaccinated against viruses. 00:32:22 - Building Resistance in the Brain, The brain needs exposure to deception and manipulation to understand their tactics and become resistant. Micro doses of misinformation help the brain develop cognitive antibodies. This research has been conducted for over a decade. 00:34:27 - Examples of Inoculation Techniques, Inoculation can be done on a single myth basis or by targeting specific tactics used in manipulation. For example, a weakened dose could be created by debunking a petition with false signatures. Inoculation helps protect people against misinformation and strengthens their perception of the scientific consensus. 00:37:48 - Scaling Inoculation, Inoculation can be scaled by targeting underlying tactics that are frequently used in a given domain or topic. Techniques like casting doubt on scientific consensus or using fear mongering can be weakened and exposed to help people resist manipulation. Short videos on platforms like YouTube can be used to reach a larger audience. 00:39:57 - Using Pop Culture as Weakened Doses, Popular culture references like Star Wars or South Park can be used as weakened doses to help people spot manipulation techniques. By using non-political examples, it becomes easier to get bipartisan agreement and educate people on logical fallacies. 00:47:31 - Tips for Spotting Misinformation, Sander recommends questioning what we see, not blindly sharing information, and not being fooled by pictures or social proof. His book, Foolproof, provides more tips and insights for spotting fake news. By applying the strategies and techniques outlined in the book, readers can become less vulnerable to misinformation. 00:48:48 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. Guests: Dr. Limin Kung, University of Delaware, and guest Bonni Kowalke, Stem Ag ConsultingOur Real Science Exchange pubcast always has leading scientists and industry professionals discussing the latest ideas and trends, and tonight, we have two distinguished guests. Dr. Limin Kung and Bonni Kowalke join us to discuss wild yeasts in silage.Dr. Kung begins by giving an overview of the impacts of wild yeast on silage, where they're either going to anaerobically ferment sugars to ethanol or aerobically; these wild yeasts can lead to spoiled silages and spoiled TMR. (8:32)Bonni and Limin then go on to detail management strategies and practices for reducing the impacts of wild yeast on silage and TMR, including harvest speed, silage moisture content, pack density, feed-out rate, and additives. (10:59)Bonni gives her perspective as a consultant about how she works with clients ahead of silage harvest to be able to prevent wild yeast infestation or any other problems. Most of her notes come right after harvest is finished with a list of things the farm wants to do differently next time, which she likens to a game plan for a team sport. (18:09)Dr. Kung describes how to determine if you have an issue with wild yeast in silage. Primarily, one would see aerobic instability via heating and perhaps molding. There will be a distinct telltale odor as well. Unfortunately, there is no on-farm test; samples must be sent to the lab for analysis. (23:10)Limin and Bonni give their top issues in regard to silage quality that they see in the field, along with ways to help producers get the very best quality silage off their fields each year. (26:40)This takes a turn into a discussion about how drone technology could be used in the future for perfecting silage moisture content predictions in the field before chopping. (32:02)Scott asks Bonni and Limin about the addition of NPN (such as urea or anhydrous ammonia) or sugar sources (such as molasses) to silage and what kind of impact that might have on silage quality. (37:24)Bonni gives an overview of silage inoculants and additives. (47:13)Limin and Bonni conclude by comparing the stability of legume silages and corn silages, an overview of inoculation best practices, and their take-home messages to ensure high-quality silage. (51:28)As mentioned in the show, Bonni Kowalke's contact information at Stem Ag Consulting is bonni@stemagconsulting.com.Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to bring more people to join us around the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table. Lastly, we'll venture into the synergy of meditation with supplements, smart drugs, nootropics, and adaptogens—exploring the exciting possibilities of enhancing mental performance. Muse is a "brain-sensing" headband that uses real-time biofeedback to help you refocus during the day and recover overnight. It doesn't merely soothe with nature sounds; it redefines mindfulness by responding to changes in your brain and body activity in real-time. At the heart of this revolutionary device is an app that provides in-depth insights into your progress, offering tangible evidence of your journey toward mental mastery. So how does Muse work? Here's the basic rundown: Muse connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth. Once connected, you simply start up the Muse Meditation app, put on your headphones, and close your eyes. If you have teenagers like I do, or have kids that will become teenagers, or are considering having kids that will become teenagers, or even know anyone with a teenager… …you've probably thought about kids and substance abuse. Of course, all parents want to give their kids the best possible resources and support to prevent problems with drugs and alcohol. But what does that look like? Is it teaching moderation or prohibiting substances before the legal age? How much does genetics play into it? Those are big, important questions, considering that according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, teen drug addiction is the nation's largest preventable and costly health problem. And nine out of 10 adults with substance use disorder report they began drinking and taking drugs before age 18. My guest on this podcast, Jessica Lahey, was born into a family with a long history of alcoholism and drug abuse. Despite her efforts to avoid that path, Jessica struggled with alcoholism herself until 2013, when she got sober in her early 40s. Her latest book, The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence, is a comprehensive resource that parents and educators can use to help prevent substance abuse in children. A parent herself, Jessica has also learned firsthand how to navigate this highly sensitive and important topic. Jessica is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed. For more than twenty years, Jessica has taught every grade from sixth to twelfth in both public and private schools, spent five years teaching in a drug and alcohol rehab for adolescents in Vermont, and serves as a prevention and recovery coach at Sana at Stowe, a medical detox and recovery center in Stowe, Vermont. Jessica writes about education, parenting, and child welfare for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, is a book critic for Air Mail, and her biweekly column “The Parent Teacher Conference” for three years at the New York Times. Jessica designed and wrote the educational curriculum for Amazon Kids' award-winning animated series The Stinky and Dirty Show, and was a 2019 Pushcart Prize nominee for her Creative Nonfiction magazine essay, “I've Taught Monsters.” The co-host of the #AmWriting podcast, with bestselling authors KJ Dell'Antonia and Sarina Bowen, Jessica also holds the dubious honor of having written an article that was later adapted as a writing prompt for the 2018 SAT. Jessica will be soon featured in a special chapter of my Boundless Parenting book, for which this podcast interview is part of a series leading up to the official book launch in late 2022. She lives in Vermont with her husband, two sons, and many dogs.
