That's a big transition, and some people don't handle it very well — they really kind of fall apart.” “Success is living out the life that you have been handed. Your identity was predestined in some ways … but when I see someone living out their calling in life, regardless of how wealthy they are, that's what success is.” “To be successful at anything, you have to live consistently and with repetition to do whatever it is that you want to do well.” “I can't control an outcome. I'm not that powerful, I'm not that good. But I can always put myself in the position to succeed.” BOOKS MENTIONED: 48 Days to the Work You Love: Preparing for the New Normal by Dan Miller (https://a.co/d/34MIxq6) The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness by Jeff Olson, John David Mann (https://a.co/d/27XN0BW) ASSESSMENT TOOL: Jordan Peterson Big 5 Personality Test USEFUL RESOURCES: https://www.garychupik.com/ https://www.elitemindsetnation.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-chupik-22aba6161/ https://www.instagram.com/elitemindset/ https://www.facebook.com/gary.chupik https://x.com/chupik_gary CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen X - https://x.com/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/
Podcast Notes Episode 478 Brushstrokes & Breakthroughs with Mark Ross Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC Guest: Mark Ross Date: August 14th, 2025 In this episode, Brian Miller talks with Mark Ross — a coach, artist, and founder of Next Thing Group — about the parallels between painting and coaching, the value of curiosity, and the journey of navigating career transitions. Mark shares how art serves as a creative escape and a process of discovery, while coaching provides a similar space for exploration and growth. He recounts how burnout in his former career led him to seek coaching, eventually becoming a coach himself, and emphasizes the power of intentional relationships and openness to new opportunities. Key Highlights: Mark's art process mirrors coaching — both involve starting without knowing the exact outcome and staying curious throughout. Painting serves as a form of mental reset, drawing Mark into a world of focus, experimentation, and discovery. Mark's transition into coaching began during a period of burnout, sparked by guidance from influential mentors like Dan Miller. The International Coaching Federation's (ICF) competencies gave Mark a clear framework to assess and grow his coaching skills. Relationships and intentional conversations have been the driving force behind Mark's personal and professional growth. Takeaways: Creativity and coaching both thrive in environments of openness, exploration, and adaptability. Burnout can serve as a catalyst for reinvention when paired with intentional action and mentorship. Structured professional standards, like those from ICF, can provide valuable benchmarks for skill development. Building genuine relationships through curiosity-driven conversations can open unexpected doors and opportunities. Have an idea or tip? Send us a text! The intersection of copyright law and artificial intelligence represents one of the most challenging legal frontiers of our digital era. In this thought-provoking conversation, Dr. C. Daniel Miller (The Copyright Detective) unpacks the complex world of intellectual property rights when machines can generate content indistinguishable from human creation. From his unique background spanning higher education, NASA projects, and over a decade in copyright clearance, Dr. Miller offers a balanced perspective on AI as both an innovative tool and a potential legal minefield. He explains that while copyright fundamentally exists to encourage creativity by granting creators exclusive rights, AI systems have disrupted this framework by training on millions of works without permission or compensation.Perhaps most surprising is the current legal status of AI-generated content: images created solely through prompts remain uncopyrightable according to the US Copyright Office. Neither the user nor the AI can claim ownership, effectively placing such creations in the public domain. Meanwhile, major lawsuits loom large over the industry, with Disney and Universal Studios taking on Midjourney for creating near-perfect replicas of iconic characters, and potential damages in other cases potentially reaching billions. For creators concerned about protecting their work, Dr. Miller emphasizes the critical importance of copyright registration within 90 days of publication. Without registration, creators cannot sue for infringement and lose access to statutory damages that make legal action financially viable. He also warns about "AI hallucinations," noting studies showing up to 79% of content from newer AI platforms may contain factual errors, reinforcing his mantra: "Don't trust and always verify."Whether you're a photographer concerned MediaclipMediaclip strives to continuously enhance the user experience while dramatically increasing revenue.Independent Photo ImagersIPI is a member + trade association and a cooperative buying group in the photo + print industry.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREEVisual 1stVisual 1st is the premier global conference focused on the photo and video ecosystem. In the first ever live-audience recording of a SWAJ episode, Brad Onishi and and Dan Miller discuss the unholy alliance between the White House and PragerU to generate AI slop that rewrites the words of Founding Fathers to fit ultra-conservative narratives. They highlight the deeper implications of this partnership, including the potential impact on education, the distortion of historical truth, and the broader socio-political atmosphere. The episode also touches on questions from the audience related to Christian nationalism, Reconstructionism, and current political controversies. This is not about working at your passions, or as my Dad, Dan Miller was famous for, finding the work you love. This is more about the tasks and activities you are engaging with in whatever work you are doing. Think about it like a football team. They are all playing football but they aren't all playing the same position. So in the daily work you do, what position most excites you? What role are you most suited to fulfill? You could be working in a field that is a perfect fit for you, but you are in a role that is not. Conversely you could be working in a field you care nothing for, but in a role that is perfect for you. I'm bringing back a conversation I had with Jonathan Fields, host of the incredibly popular podcast, the Good Life Project. I've had Jonathan on my podcast multiple times and I just so appreciate his spirit and energy. He developed a test of sorts that will help you know what work role fits you best. Where you will be most inspired, or as he calls it, what sparks you? It's free as well. Go to sparketype.com. As an example, my primary sparketype is Maker. I like to…make things. Build things. And while I build some physical things, most of my spark is in relation to building ideas. My second sparketype is Scientist, which is coming up with ways to make the idea happen. It then showcases what is not, my sparketype. This is not an excuse of what to do and what not to do, but to show you where you are best suited. For me, I continually strive to remain in the roles where I'm sparked, and delegate the other areas of my work to people who are sparked in them, and do a far greater and more efficient job. Again, you can take the test for free at sparketype.com and connect with Jonathan Fields at his podcast, the Good Life Project. You can be further ahead, but you only have to be one step ahead.” “You can't be a disciple maker if you're not a disciple first.” “You can't take people higher up in the mountain than you've been.” “Great leaders come in with nothing to hide, nothing to prove, nothing to lose.” “You only need to be one step ahead of the person you're coaching.” “Sometimes all it takes is a small shift in perspective to open up a whole new world.” “Athletes have coaches, but everyone else is just told to figure it out.” “We're all a puzzle piece in this giant puzzle … When we discover our identity and we're living in our purpose, then we are linking arms, yoked with the other pieces around us.” “If we want to go fast, we've got to go together.” “You think about something you buy and you're really excited about, and it almost immediately loses value. The longer you have it, the more it degrades. Soon it's just junk, and you throw it away. Experiences are like wine — they get sweeter.” “We prioritize meetings with people we don't know or don't even like, but we leave it up to chance to hang out with the people that matter to us most. Send us a text(REPRISE) Ken welcomes professor, fellow podcaster, and author Dr. Brad Onishi back to the podcast to talk about his new book - Preparing for War - The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next (release date: January 3, 2023). A long-time friend of the podcast, Brad has been busy after a major event in Denver focussed on Christian Nationalism last month with a large audience both live and virtual. It featured major influencers and thinkers including Robert P. Jones, Sam Perry, Katherine Steward, Larycia Hawkins, and his podcast partner, Dan Miller. In addition to his regular podcast, Straight White American Jesus,. Brad is releasing a series on The New Apostolic Reformation with Professor Matthew Taylor, Ph.D. It's an expose on a growing movement advancing an extreme dominion version of Christianity. Brad introduces his book which traces what we now know as Christian Trumpism from the 1960s to the present in the context of his own personal journey - beginning with his conversion in high school in Orange County (CA); the great mid-west and Southern migration to California, the John Birch Society, The Crystal Cathedral and Robert Schuller, his own Friends Church (predominantly white) and Friendship Baptist Church (predominantly black), to Dr. James Dobson and his secular eugenicist mentor, Dr. Paul Pompenoe. Onishi fills in the background on two Jericho Marches, featuring Eric Metaxas, Michael Flynn and Alex Jones, which were a prelude to the January 6 Insurrection. Finally, the two discuss the ways in which American Evangelicalism finds its roots in The Lost Case Narrative of the South. What began as a discussion on whether our work must really be so important ultimately came to our need to know ourselves and what really fulfills us individually. And while yes, having meaningful work is profound to the joy of our lives, it's also not meant to be the end all to our purpose and calling, but a tool. For this conversation I brought on Dan Miller, celebrated career leader and author of the classic tome on work, 48 Days To The Work & Life You Love. And also, my father. He passed away suddenly in January of 2024 and his work continues to inspire so many lives. We had a conversation at a high, and deep level, regarding how we all perceive the value and importance of our work. I wanted to speak specifically to those who may be feeling stress and anxiety about finding the ultimate work opportunity. The “holy grail” and culmination of their life's purpose and calling. That can be so daunting and in this episode I feel we did justice in taking some of the pressure off the work and putting the impetus on us having a bigger view of our overall life focus. I grew up with parents who had me reading Dale Carnegie's book, How To Win Friends & Influence People, when other kids were reading comic books. They modeled being respectful to all people, especially those in the least positions of power. I actually found them to be far more intolerant of those in power. Four years ago I sat down with my Dad, Dan Miller, famous for his career book which has become a classic, 48 Days To The Work & Life Love, to talk about it. At the time my parents were living in a gated community in Florida where they often frequented the neighborhood club for meals. As soon as they pulled up in the parking lot, you'd think they were royalty in how the staff treated them. Literally. It was almost embarrassing. But it wasn't because my parents were well known. It wasn't because they tipped well. It's because they cared. They knew what was going on in the lives of the valets, the hostesses, the servers, the manager of the place. They did it because it's what they believed was right and best. But from the care they received, people could get the idea they lived a charmed life. But what I witnessed was that they planted the seeds…for a charmed life. So here is a discussion I had with my now deceased Dad, in his previous office, about the reasons and benefits behind treating all people with respect. We all think we know what self-talk is. But I think we miss the gravity of it. I'm reminded of the joke where one fish asks another fish "how's the water?" The other fish replies, "what the heck is water?" We were never introduced to our own self-talk, it was there since the day we were conceived to varying degrees. We are not necessarily conscious of it. In this episode we expand on self-talk to help you conceptualize how it is your very perception of life. My guest is Marianne Renner. I've gotten to know Marianne well over the last year and she has a real story of not only changing her self-talk, but transforming herself in a way that she can't really even recognize the person she used to be. She lost her mom at an early age and was left with a broken hearted father. She fell into addiction. She considered ending her life. Even tried. And then had one of those divine moments of clarity. To me it is akin to the fish all of the sudden realizing it was in water. Marianne has not just changed her life, she has changed the very essence of the person she is, and she's thriving. She has a new book coming out, Self-Talk: 10 Stories You Tell Yourself That Hold You Back…And How to Overcome Them. On a personal side, one of Marianne's mentors in her journey to remake herself and her life, was my father. Dan Miller. He encouraged her to write a book. She did, completing it right around the time my Dad died. She had him in mind to write the forward to her book. But in his absence, she asked me to carry on the legacy. I am incredibly honored to have written a heartfelt forward for Marianne's book. I'm honored for multiple reasons, the top one being, I feel this is a message we all desperately need. If you'll go to mariannerenner.com/selftalk, you can get the first three chapters of her book absolutely free.
