I have recorded multiple episodes on the topic of "Sharpening The Blade." Sharpening the blade is a term used by chefs, lumberjacks and hockey players that means, take the time to sharpen your blade and you will save time and effort while you cut, chop or skate. I sharpen my mental blade multiple times a year. Short trips, hikes, weekends with no cell service and anything else that removes me from the grid would qualify as a STB! This last STB was one for the ages. I trained for it, planned for it and executed it to the highest level. It involved an entire month of travel, new experiences, killer waves, massive wipeouts, sun, fun and romance. (Ahhh ha honey! That's right baby) You don't need to do what I did to get similar results. You just need to have an intention and create an environment that is conducive to that intention. You have Bali in your heart. You have Thailand in your loins. You just need to dig deeper to find it. (That didn't sound right!) Enjoy this episode. I enjoyed recording it for you. When was the last time you practiced the basics? I'm talking about drawing cubes, playing scales, writing clean sentences—the broccoli of creativity. Not glamorous, not sexy, but absolutely essential. The truth is, fundamentals aren't just for beginners. They're for everyone. Athletes run drills. Musicians practice scales. Even chefs revisit chopping onions. Why? Because mastery is maintenance.Skipping fundamentals is like skipping the gym—you'll eventually regret it. And the best part? The stronger your basics, the freer your creativity becomes. Fundamentals are the foundation that lets you build castles, break rules, and push limits without everything collapsing. So this week's Monday Motivation is all about revisiting your fundamentals. Pick one area of your craft, go back to basics, and practice. Not because you're bad, but because you're sharpening your edge.

For the deductionist, curiosity isn't just a nice trait, it's the engine of learning, the driver of observation, and the spark of critical thinking. Without it, conversations stay shallow, patterns go unnoticed, and our ability to reason is dulled. Research (Kross et al., 2013) shows that modern conversations often leave us less satisfied, less heard, and less engaged. The antidote? Curiosity. As Leslie (2014) argues, curiosity is one of the most underrated tools for deeper understanding. When applied through a deductionist lens, curiosity turns everyday exchanges into opportunities to gather data, test assumptions, and refine your thinking. In this episode of The Deductionist Podcast, we'll explore: How curiosity fuels sharper observation and better questions. Why curiosity is essential to learning and behavioural intelligence. How to move beyond small talk and into meaningful deduction. The role of curiosity in critical thinking and avoiding cognitive bias.

Eradicating Dysfunction and Raising StandardsIt's so important to recognize and eliminate dysfunction from both our personal lives and business. We often end up tolerating ongoing issues because they feel familiar or we think we're too busy to deal with them. The key is to consciously pause and address these pain points instead of just powering through them.2. Sharpening the Axe Before Taking ActionThis draws on Abraham Lincoln's famous "sharpen the axe" quote, which beautifully illustrates how valuable preparation and organization can be before jumping into tasks. When we invest time upfront to tackle dysfunction or get organized, it makes everything that follows so much smoother and more efficient.3. Focusing on Your Own Pain Points FirstHere's a refreshing perspective: instead of constantly worrying about your audience's pain points (which is typical business advice), try making a list of your own personal challenges and work on solving those first. When you share solutions to problems you've actually faced, it creates genuine connections and naturally grows your business.4. Avoiding Codependency and Maintaining Healthy BoundariesMany of us, especially women, have a habit of focusing on everyone else's problems as a way to avoid our own. It's worth watching out for high-functioning codependency and remembering that we should only take responsibility for problems that are truly ours to solve. This kind of self-awareness leads to real empowerment and healthier relationships.
