“When you go into a Hostage Rescue you have to see it as if you are protecting or trying to save your own child, your own mother, your own brother.  If you can't put yourself in a situation to see it that way you can't do that job.  And that's the way Miami Dade SWAT SRT, that is what our perspective was.  The Job that we do is real, and you are going to have to perform.  You are going to be put in situations where you have to respond at the highest level, and if you fall short someone loses their life.  When you see the reality of life and death, and you are responsible for that, it puts a different level in you.  You have a mindset that you cannot fail, there is no failure in this, if you fail you die, your teammates die, and more importantly the person you are trying to save dies.” – Dexter FletcherMy guest this episode is Dexter Fletcher, who served for 35 years in the Miami Dade Police Department, and 30 of those years on S.W.A.T.  as part of their Special Response Team.  He is a multi-discipline martial arts master with a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Nisie Goju Ruyu Karate & Ju Jitsu and a 5th Dan Black Belt in Nagasudo Ju Jitsu and Combative Arts.  Mr. Fletcher specializes in training Police, SWAT, and Military Units Nationally and Internationally.  He has first-hand experiences protecting Presidents, Popes, and Dignitaries.  His highly decorated career has involved everything from frequent hostage rescue situations, to hunting fugitives, to protecting civilians from the monsters in this world.  This episode is all about the makings of a Guardian and what it takes to function at the highest levels in the most extreme and stressful environments.  My key takeaway is that Form must Follow Function.  In life and death situations when you are responsible for yourself, your teammates, and those you are protecting your training must prepare you to perform with zero room for failure.  Hero's like Dexter Fletcher are a very rare and humble bread, they are guardians who put the preservation of others over their own self-preservation.  I consider Dexter Fletcher to be a Modern-Day Samurai, who lives by a strict code of conduct driven by a definiteness of purpose and a selflessness dedicated to service and the preservation of life.    We can learn so much from being in the mere presence of such individuals, who truly walk the walk, I am humbled and honored to spend time with this remarkable man.  Tune in for a life changing episode.

I didn't appreciate, at that time, as a kid what I really had in front of me as a mentor, as a guy… Once the season is over, it's over, but Martial Arts, it's for life… Sensei Jerry Figgiani - Episode 748 Sensei Jerry Figgiani, 8th Dan Black Belt, is the President and Founder of Shorin Ryu Karate-Do International and the owner of East Coast Black Belt Academy, Budokan Dojo. He comes from a strong lineage of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu practitioners who have followed in the footsteps of Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine. Starting his training in 1977, he has been teaching martial arts since 1988. Through his extensive background and experience, he has developed a unique way of bringing the philosophy of martial arts to everyday life activities. Because he has the ability to reach students of all ages and skill levels and help them understand karate's movements, mechanics, and applications his seminars are universal to any karate system. As such, he has been invited to teach all over the world and was one of the first western instructors to have the honor of teaching at the Okinawa Karate Kaikan, the official government-supported center for learning the essence of traditional karate. A published author as well as the subject of many magazines, newspapers, and media articles, Sensei Figgiani is a featured column writer for the premiere martial arts magazine, Masters, and has published books on martial practice and philosophy as well as interviews with some of today's greatest martial artists and karate pioneers. Building on his distinctive ability to help his students reach and exceed their expectations, in 2010 Sensei Figgiani developed the Mental Martial Arts Program. Promoted predominantly in the K-12 school classrooms, the series of lessons is designed to create a more peaceful school and community environment, instill a sense of confidence and self-respect in the students and even more importantly, help each individual learn the value and benefit of respecting others. Possessing a 3rd-degree black belt in Judo and membership in the Kodokan, the headquarters of Judo training located in Tokyo, Japan, Sensei Figgiani is able to integrate the principles and foundations of both karate and judo into a well-rounded and total martial education for his students. In this way, the student gets a complete understanding of the mechanics of self-defense enabling them to be more confident and secure as they go through their daily life. In 2003, Sensei Figgiani created a program with the support of the Police Athletic League that would improve academic achievement through the study of martial arts. Known as the R.E.A.C.H. Program, the acronym stands for Respect Education and Always Climb Higher. The program guides kids having social and academic difficulties towards success through the practice of traditional martial arts skills. This curriculum instantly became so popular that in 2004 the Longwood School District Board of Education recognized Sensei for the immediate impact his methods had on the lives of the student participants. Later, in 2012, Sensei was presented with the National Police Athletic League Mentoring Service Award for the dramatic influence his program has made on the lives of so many students. The R.E.A.C.H. program continues to this day and has expanded to numerous school districts sharing its positive impact on students throughout Long Island. Sensei Figgiani believes that a major component of learning martial arts is being able to integrate the lessons taught in the school with the activities that take place in daily life. Making positive choices in difficult situations, learning about situational awareness and stranger danger, adopting strategies for safety when it comes to bullying, and being able to manage and overcome peer pressure are just some of the values taught to his students. This mind, body and spirit philosophy creates a safe and unique learning environment for each and every student. Recognizing this success, in 2018 Jerry Figgiani Sensei was invited to be the Keynote Speaker at Brookhaven Town Hall addressing the issues of making positive life choices and student anti-bullying strategies. In 2019, he was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the practice of martial arts. In this episode, Sensei Figgiano shares his journey to the martial arts. Listen to learn more!

I'm a sophomore at the University of Hawaii attending normal classes by day and the American College of Sports Medicine certification classes by night. In one of the night classes, I meet this guy named Dave. He tells me he owns a dojo in town and invites me to try a workout. I explain that hey, I'm a Softball Pitcher and have been since I was a little girl. I have no interest in those Martial Arts. Plus, I've earned a full-ride scholarship based on my softball prowess, so softball's my thing. Yet, every time I see him, Dave keeps inviting me and continues to insist I take a class at his dojo. He's relentless. Week after week, month after month - the invites turn to challenges and the challenges turn to dares. One night I have had enough and I make him a deal: I will take his class just once. In return, he will not bug me about it ever again. I took his class in 1991 and Martial Arts has been a mainstay in my life ever since. 30 years later, I am returning the favor and I've invited… er… challenged/dared Dave Wheaton, now aka the Grandmaster, to come on the Storytelling School Podcast, and here he is!  In our episode, we explore storytelling through the perspective of teaching and training.  He and I talk about best practices for approaching your chosen profession, developing storytelling skills even when it doesn't come naturally, and life lessons you can learn from Martial Arts. Plus we look at humor in stories and how important stories are to our legacy. What you will learn in this episode: Why it's essential to study the greats in your field How to gain mastery at whatever you do How martial arts apply to life and storytelling Who is Dave? Dave Wheaton is an instructor, mentor, coach, and Martial Arts Grandmaster who's taught and trained thousands of students nationwide for over 50 years. His credentials include a 9th Dan Black Belt in Hapkido, an 8th Dan in Taekwondo, and a Golden Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Karate Union Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Dave is the founder and president of Hapkido International. He developed a self-defense system based on Hapkido that combines several Martial Arts techniques with an emphasis on flowing seamlessly between movements. With it, the student can respond intuitively with the necessary amount of force, regardless of size or age. Now, Grandmaster Dave teaches private hapkido and kickboxing lessons both in person and via Zoom for students all over the world. His other interests include garage winemaking, Paleo cooking, and serving as an FAA Certified Gold Seal Flight instructor. This has been my favorite podcast I've recorded so far, hence the long run time so bear with it because it keeps getting better over time. I'll do my best to organize this description in the order in which it comes up during the conversation.  First we talk about Michael's Art, his contribution to a Jack the Ripper book, meditation, ghosts and spirits, his favorite YouTube Guru, the heart's neural network, sense memory, and his first mushroom trip. Then he tells us the story of his severe car accident, his road to recovery and how martial arts and meditation saved him from his injuries. He finishes it off by talking about his trip to the DMT realm and his theories on levels of consciousness in our universe.   Useful Links: Michael's Insta The Pyramid Piece Sherlock Holmes Autumn of Terror By Randy Williams SadhGuru Hacking the Flow Cycle The Power of the Heart: Heartmath As a Man Thinketh By James Allen Qigong Frank Santiago III 8th Dan Black Belt and CRCA Wing Chun Zen12 Baduanjin Qigong Yijin Jing DMT: The Spirit Molecule Dragon Ball Fighterz GTek Email me at thecosmicperspectivepod@gmail.com Linktree: https://linktr.ee/thecosmicperspectivepod My Podcast: Apple Podcast https://apple.co/2otAn0F Google Play http://bit.ly/CosmicPerspectivePodGooglePlay Spotify: http://bit.ly/Thecosmicperspectivepodspotify Stitcher: http://bit.ly/thecosmicperspectivepodstitcher My Website: http://www.kevinsuniverse.com KDTV Links: IG: http://bit.ly/KDTVIG FB: http://bit.ly/KDTVFB94 YT: http://bit.ly/KDTVYT Twitch: http://bit.ly/KDTVTwitch My Insta: http://bit.ly/cosmickevinsta My Facebook: http://bit.ly/cosmickevfb My Twitter: http://bit.ly/cosmickevtwitter The Cosmic Perspective Pod Social Media: Insta: http://bit.ly/thecosmicperspectivepodinsta Facebook: http://bit.ly/Thecosmicperspectivepodfb Twitter: http://bit.ly/thecosmicperpsectivepodtwitter
