Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:9-11 Clearly the central focus of the entire Bible is Jesus Christ. He is foreseen in the books of the Old Testament, often in shrouded language whose glory is revealed when Christ appears in human form. The mountain peaks of revelation are found in the New Testament, where the mystery and majesty of Christ stand out in unmistakable and unforgettable splendor. Philippians 2:5-11 is one of the most magnificent passages in the New Testament in terms of the exalting of the supremacy of Jesus over all things. There is a certain symmetry to the description of Christ here. The glory of His divinity in eternity past is declared in Philippians 2:6, which speaks of Christ being "in the form of God" because of His "equality with God." Then in verse 7 we have the humiliating incarnation of Christ "taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men." Then in verses 9-11 we have the restoration of Christ's heavenly glory as God the Father exalts His Son to the highest degree imaginable. "God highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name" (Phil 2:9). Some say that the name given to Christ is Jesus, which is mentioned in verse 10. It is better to conclude that the name given to Christ is 'Lord', mentioned in verse 11. This is a statement of the divinity and supreme glory of Christ. (1) In the Old Testament God's 'name' represents His essence and His glory. "I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other" (Isa 42:8). (2) In Philippians 2:10,11 Paul is borrowing the wording from Isaiah 45:23, which refers to God. (3) The Greek word for 'lord' here (kurios) is the word used to translate the Hebrew word YHWH in the Greek translation of the Old Testament. That our Savior is supreme, in every way, should fill us with humility and joy and hope and strength. Let us ever praise and adore Him on bended knee.
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 This passage is the most theological section of Philippians and one of the most majestic passages in the Bible. At the same time these verses speak of the glorious divinity of Christ and the inestimable humiliation involved in the humanity of Christ. Philippians 2:6 is built on the eternal existence of God the Son before His incarnation. When the verse says, "he was in the form of God," the meaning is that Christ possessed the very essence of God prior to His being born as a human being. This is the divinity of Christ. Philippians 2:7 describes the humiliation of Christ after "taking on the form of a servant." To become a man and to die as a man was an indescribable and infinite veiling of divine dignity. The uniting of divinity and humanity in one person is inscrutable enough, but the death of God the Son in human form is mystery upon mystery. "'Tis mystery all! Th' Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design?" Gloriously, the Christmas story gives way to the Easter story … incarnation … crucifixion … resurrection! We must not forget the context of this marvelous description of the work and exaltation of Christ. The humility of Christ is presented here to be an encouragement to us to humble ourselves before one another. We cannot consider the willingness of God the Son to humble Himself, even to death, for our salvation and then remain proud when we interact with each other. This passage is a clear call for church harmony, with Jesus as the supreme example of humility.

Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:10-13 I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12 As I drove up to the assisted living facility, my friend was ready and waiting. It was Tuesday, our breakfast day. With some effort he pulled his aged legs into the car, placed the cane between us, and let me fasten his seat belt. Then, buckled in, he sighed quietly, “Nothing gets easier.” My quiet, unassuming friend remembered other days—back when he was a strong, vibrant young man. At our breakfasts we could sometimes coax stories out of him about being a pilot in World War II. Or he might share with us some memories he enjoyed from decades of playing golf. He had lived a healthy, active, productive life. But now his legs and the body that had served him well for nearly a century had become unsteady and unreliable. Simple tasks had become challenging. The sigh that came was understandable: “Nothing gets easier.” His gentle sigh wasn't a protest; it wasn't a grumbling complaint. My friend was simply stating a fact. What countless generations have experienced was now his lot; he accepted it—with grace and gentleness and a trusting contentment. My friend had learned what the apostle Paul learned—to be content in every situation. Nothing gets easier. But by an interesting twist of God's grace, we can grow spiritual fruit: patience, kindness, gentleness, contentment. Lord, grant us contentment as we live out our lives. Thank you. Amen.
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:1-11 Every tongue [shall] acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:11 Our pastor talked about feeling the weight of ministering in our time. Political issues, social unrest, justice concerns, COVID-19, congregational needs—all these and more had become heavy to the point of being overwhelming. She spoke as a pastor, but it isn't only pastors and church leaders who know the struggle with matters that are too big for us, is it? In a sermon, she told us about the powerful impact of a three-word sentence that a church leader used at the end of his emails. Before he “signed” his name, he would write, “Jesus is Lord!” Our pastor experienced power and encouragement from this simple little sentence. Why? Because Jesus the Lord is the one who loves us—so much that he willingly became a servant, surrendering the glory of equality with God. And more—“he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross” for our sake! And even more—Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to rule in heaven. He is the risen, exalted, reigning Christ—the Lord to whom all authority and power in heaven and on earth have been given. He is our risen, living, ascended, reigning Lord. And “if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Thank you, Jesus, for being the Savior and Lord we need—powerful and strong, gentle and loving. Amen.
