This is the farewell message from The Rev Anders Edstrom to Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Berkley, MI. SCRIPTURE READING: Philippians 1:3-11 Thanksgiving and prayer 3 I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers. 4 I'm thankful for all of you every time I pray, and it's always a prayer full of joy. 5 I'm glad because of the way you have been my partners in the ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now. 6 I'm sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. 7 I have good reason to think this way about all of you because I keep you in my heart. You are all my partners in God's grace, both during my time in prison and in the defense and support of the gospel. 8 God is my witness that I feel affection for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. 9 This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. 10 I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. 11 I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God.

This is the Fourth Sunday of Lent, as we continue the Sermon Series titled “Letters from CELL 92, Lent with Bonhoeffer” from Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Berkley, MI. SCRIPTURE READING: Philippians 2:1-11 Imitate Christ 2 Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort in love, any sharing in the Spirit, any sympathy, 2 complete my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, being united, and agreeing with each other. 3 Don't do anything for selfish purposes, but with humility think of others as better than yourselves. 4 Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others. 5 Adopt the attitude that was in Christ Jesus: 6 Though he was in the form of God, he did not consider being equal with God something to exploit. 7 But he emptied himself by taking the form of a slave and by becoming like human beings. When he found himself in the form of a human, 8he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God highly honored him and gave him a name above all names, 10so that at the name of Jesus everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth might bow 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:9-11 Clearly the central focus of the entire Bible is Jesus Christ. He is foreseen in the books of the Old Testament, often in shrouded language whose glory is revealed when Christ appears in human form. The mountain peaks of revelation are found in the New Testament, where the mystery and majesty of Christ stand out in unmistakable and unforgettable splendor. Philippians 2:5-11 is one of the most magnificent passages in the New Testament in terms of the exalting of the supremacy of Jesus over all things. There is a certain symmetry to the description of Christ here. The glory of His divinity in eternity past is declared in Philippians 2:6, which speaks of Christ being "in the form of God" because of His "equality with God." Then in verse 7 we have the humiliating incarnation of Christ "taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men." Then in verses 9-11 we have the restoration of Christ's heavenly glory as God the Father exalts His Son to the highest degree imaginable. "God highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name" (Phil 2:9). Some say that the name given to Christ is Jesus, which is mentioned in verse 10. It is better to conclude that the name given to Christ is 'Lord', mentioned in verse 11. This is a statement of the divinity and supreme glory of Christ. (1) In the Old Testament God's 'name' represents His essence and His glory. "I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other" (Isa 42:8). (2) In Philippians 2:10,11 Paul is borrowing the wording from Isaiah 45:23, which refers to God. (3) The Greek word for 'lord' here (kurios) is the word used to translate the Hebrew word YHWH in the Greek translation of the Old Testament. That our Savior is supreme, in every way, should fill us with humility and joy and hope and strength. Let us ever praise and adore Him on bended knee.
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 This passage is the most theological section of Philippians and one of the most majestic passages in the Bible. At the same time these verses speak of the glorious divinity of Christ and the inestimable humiliation involved in the humanity of Christ. Philippians 2:6 is built on the eternal existence of God the Son before His incarnation. When the verse says, "he was in the form of God," the meaning is that Christ possessed the very essence of God prior to His being born as a human being. This is the divinity of Christ. Philippians 2:7 describes the humiliation of Christ after "taking on the form of a servant." To become a man and to die as a man was an indescribable and infinite veiling of divine dignity. The uniting of divinity and humanity in one person is inscrutable enough, but the death of God the Son in human form is mystery upon mystery. "'Tis mystery all! Th' Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design?" Gloriously, the Christmas story gives way to the Easter story … incarnation … crucifixion … resurrection! We must not forget the context of this marvelous description of the work and exaltation of Christ. The humility of Christ is presented here to be an encouragement to us to humble ourselves before one another. We cannot consider the willingness of God the Son to humble Himself, even to death, for our salvation and then remain proud when we interact with each other. This passage is a clear call for church harmony, with Jesus as the supreme example of humility.

Welcome to the power of prayer podcast. I am your host, Sherrie T., and this is the best day of your life because God is in control. Our affirmation is we are excited, blessed, grateful, and, most of all, we are Believers 4 Life. We hope these moments of prayer and bible reading will empower you to have faith in God's word. Believe in John 3:16 and be transformed by the Holy Spirit. Inspire you to pray for your family, friends, and community. Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:1-11 Reflection: Paul says the best way to get over the "it's all about me" mindset is to become second put others before yourself. Paul lays out the blueprint and instructs us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus; Love what Jesus loved, hate what He hated. Jesus is the supreme example of humility and unselfishness; therefore, you and I should strive to imitate Jesus by our actions. Paul brings this home by understanding the relationship between the Father and the son.
