In June 2024, I got to go to the Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, Massachusetts, which is organized by the band Wilco. I performed some of my new songs, and I got to interview Jeff Tweedy, the lead singer of Wilco, on stage as part of the festival. Jeff, in addition to being in Wilco and the band Tweedy, and putting out his solo albums, has also written three books. And this conversation was focused on his second book, which is called How to Write One Song. And even though it's called How to Write One Song, I think it actually contains a lot of insight about creativity in general, and life in general. I've recommended it to friends of mine who aren't songwriters. And, as you'll hear, the conversation gets pretty personal for me, because I got so much out of the book personally. It helped me with some of the blocks that I'd been facing in my own songwriting, at a pretty profound level. And when I was listening back to this recording, I'd kind of forgotten about how much I put out there in front of Jeff and the thousands of people who were there watching. But I'm glad the conversation was recorded, partly just so I could revisit it, but also so that I could share it here on Song Exploder. I hope you'll enjoy it, too.You can buy How to Write One Song by Jeff Tweedy here (via Bookshop.org) or here (via Amazon) or on Wilco's website. You can listen to the Wilco episode of Song Exploder here. I also interviewed Jeff along with his son Spencer, who is also his bandmate in Tweedy, about their relationship and musical partnership, for an episode of my podcast Partners. You can listen to that here. Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.For more, visit songexploder.net/jeff-tweedy.

John Hodgman is a writer, actor, and comedian who has forged what seems to be - or at least we hope is - a comfortable niche in the entertainment world. He is the host of the Judge John Hodgman podcast on the Maximum Fun network, the co-creator with David Rees of the animated series, DICKTOWN on FX/Hulu, and the author of the books: “The Areas of my Expertise,” “More Information than you Require,” “That is All”, “Vacationland,” and “Medallion Status.”For every Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA since the second Wilco curated wonder-weekend in 2011, Hodgman has curated the comedy portion of the festival and he joins us with a preview.
Harpist and singer-songwriter Mikaela Davis is playing two shows in our region this week - the first on Thursday, June 27 at The Colony in Woodstock, New York with Nashville based band Rich Ruth opening and the second on Saturday, June 29 as part of Wilco's Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.
Near the start of his recently released book World Within a Song, Jeff Tweedy admits there's probably some parallel timeline where this one is his first, not third, book. It is, after all, dedicated to a subject he's “thought about the most by far: other people's songs.” Through a series of comical stories and humble reflections, the Wilco leader puts together a playlist with the book. It's a wide ranging one at that, covering the spectral, alt-country slow-core combo Souled American to gospel purity of The Staples Singers to the abrasive rapture of Suicide. Songs, Tweedy insists, teach us how to be human, how, to quote Tweedy ”universally vast the experience of listening to almost anything with intent and openness can be. And most importantly, how songs absorb and enhance our own experiences and store our memories.” Tweedy has penned plenty of songs that fit that bill for me personally, and that's why I'm so glad to welcome him to this week's installment of Transmissions. This year, Wilco celebrated a milestone: 20 years of the band's current lineup: founding members Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, keyboard player Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. They aren't commemorating with a rest. They're staging another installment of their Solid Sound Festival, June 28-30th at MASS MoCA In North Adams, MA. And they've got a new EP on the way too, Hot Sun Cool Shroud, out June 28 via their dBpm label, which they'll debut at the festival. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a lively conversation between some people whose relationship got off to kind of a rocky start, but who've since become friends: Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and all three members of Mountain Man: Amelia Meath, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Molly Sarle. Now the occasion for this conversation is the recent reissue of the first Mountain Man record, 2010's Made the Harbor, which features new liner notes written by Tweedy. This gorgeous, strange record was made back when these three women were just getting to know each other as college students in Vermont. Somehow, as if by magic—you'll hear about that in this chat—their voices perfectly intertwined, and some of the very first songs that any of them wrote ended up becoming these timeless little gems. And then they went their separate ways for quite a long time: Meath ended up as half of Sylvan Esso, most notably. They've since regrouped for shows and more excellent music, most recently a live album called Look at Me, Don't Look at Me. The members of Mountain Man first met Jeff Tweedy when they played Wilco's Solid Sound Festival—and apparently snubbed Tweedy when he introduced himself. No offense was taken and a friendship was eventually formed, though as you'll hear, Tweedy still finds himself a little intimidated in their presence. Tweedy's latest entry in an incredibly prolific career is a deluxe edition of Love is the King, the album he recorded and released during the first part of the pandemic. It's now getting a bonus disc called Live is the King, which as you may have guessed, features live renditions of these excellent songs. Tweedy and Mountain Man will meet again in person in January during Wilco's Sky Blue Sky festival in Mexico. Presumably they will recognize him this time. In this funny, winding conversation, they begin by talking about seasonal depression, pivot quickly to a discussion of candy, and then move on to the serious business of creating music—and what that means to them. So we've got everything from Mountain Man's magical discovery of their own voices—like a unicorn in the woods—to Jeff's story about the time he thought he could lose weight by eating only Snickers. One minute, Amelia Meath is talking about sexy lumberjacks on TikTok, the next Jeff Tweedy is pining for an honorary Bachelor's Degree. Won't somebody give him one? We're looking at you, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jeff Tweedy and Mountain Man for chatting. The podcast is 21 episodes old, but there's a case of arrested development as all of Mike and Megan's technology has failed forcing them to record with limited resources. After recapping what was a wonderful vacation spent together at Wilco's Solid Sound Festival, a round of F, Marry, Kill and another stellar installment of Megan's Journal Kernels, the jar gives a crappy joke. Mike suffers a mini panic attack, but Megan calms things down as the conversation goes into weightier topics like trying new things, dreamers dreaming and how much time they have to become as famous as Megan Mullally and Vinny Pastore.
