Edition No245 | 10-09-2025 - Poland has triggered NATO Article 4, in what is being interpreted by informed commentators as a significant sub-threshold escalation by Russia's, and explicit threat Europe and the NATO alliance, as well as marking the war's widening arc. Poland says a mass of Russian “drone-type objects” broke into its airspace as Moscow hammered Ukraine. Polish and allied jets — including Dutch F-35s — scrambled and shot several down. Warsaw shut airports, ordered people indoors, and did something only anticipated in the gravest moments: invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. “Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote. (Associated Press via NPR/OPB, Sept. 10, 2025)The EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas called it “the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began,” adding that “indications suggest it was intentional, not accidental.” (Reuters, Sept. 10, 2025; ABC News, Sept. 10, 2025) This is no isolated scare. It fits a pattern: missiles and drones “straying” into NATO skies, GPS jamming from Kaliningrad, and the return of Zapad, Russia's most confrontational military drills with Belarus. Tonight, we map the pattern, the risks, and what comes next. Why are U.S. high school seniors performing worse in core subjects than they have in decades? A new national report shows reading scores are at their lowest since 1992, math has fallen to 2005 levels, and nearly half of seniors now score below basic in math. The study also reveals widening achievement gaps, with struggling students and girls in STEM falling further behind (AP News).

The Long Island Serial Killings, also known as the Gilgo Beach Murders or the Craigslist Ripper case, is an unsolved serial murder investigation centered around the discovery of numerous human remains on Long Island, New York. The case has been ongoing since 2010 and remains unsolved as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.The initial discovery took place on December 11, 2010, when police were searching for a missing woman named Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker who had gone to meet a client in Oak Beach, Suffolk County. During the search, police found the remains of four women in the vicinity of Gilgo Beach. These victims were later identified as Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Lynn Costello, all of whom were also involved in sex work.As the investigation progressed, additional remains were discovered in the same area. In March and April 2011, six more sets of remains were found, along with the remains of an unidentified toddler, who came to be known as "Baby Doe" or "Jane Doe #6." The additional victims were identified as Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Jane Doe #6 (the toddler), and an Asian male dressed in women's clothing. The police discovered that many of the victims had connections to the sex trade and had advertised their services on websites like Craigslist. This led investigators to suspect that a serial killer, dubbed the "Long Island Serial Killer" or "Craigslist Ripper," was specifically targeting sex workers in the area. The case gained significant media attention and sparked a large-scale investigation involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The search for additional evidence continued over the years, including the use of cadaver dogs, aerial searches, and the excavation of specific areas.Despite these efforts, no further bodies were found. The investigation faced various challenges and controversies. Shannan Gilbert's disappearance and death were initially treated as unrelated to the serial killings. However, her death was later attributed to accidental drowning. The mishandling of the case and the delayed response to her initial 911 call raised questions about the police's handling of the investigation. Then on July 13th, 2023 an arrest in the case was finally made. The man arrested? Rex Heuermann. In this episode, we hear from Dave Schaller, the man who gave the police the tip about who Heuermann was over a decade ago and even gave them a description of the vehicle the alleged serial killer was driving.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:He came face to face with an alleged serial killer. 12 years later, his tip helped crack the case | AP News
Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana in 2005 and is still the costliest disaster in U.S. history. New Orleans, a city resting below sea level, is uniquely dependent on engineering for its safety. On August 29th, nearly every defense seemed to fail, allowing storm surge to flood 80% of the city. As terrible as the storm itself, arguably, were the human failures that contributed to what happened to New Orleans during and after Katrina—flaws in planning, infrastructure, governance, and social equity. Yet change is possible. And in the intervening years, New Orleans has become known globally as a leader in preparedness, adaptation and recovery knowledge. New Orleanians are weary of being praised for their resilience. In the past five years alone, the metro area has faced 17 federally declared national disasters—four times the national average. And the challenge of long-term adaptation can be especially overwhelming, especially at a time when consensus seems nearly impossible. But there is no substitute for New Orleans. Its people, environment, culture, and history add up to an inimitable home worth sustaining. In this episode, longtime friend of Ten Across Jeff Hébert joins us to talk about the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—the recovery process and the lessons in it that continue to resonate for the future of all our communities. Today, Jeff is chief executive officer for HR&A Advisors. In the years after Katrina, as a New Orleans native and urban planner, he served as a director with the Louisiana Recovery Authority and as a senior official in Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration. He was also among the first chief resilience officers appointed under The Rockefeller Foundation's 100 Resilient Cities program. Ten Across founder Duke Reiter talks with Jeff about how his experiences with the long game of adaptation and recovery in New Orleans and beyond have shaped his perspective and his work. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the new animated film on Netflix that has everyone talking. It's called “KPop Demon Hunters,” and was an instant success when it was released back in June. It's gained so much momentum that it was shown in a limited release on the big screen - just for two days and in only 1,700 theaters - in a sing-along format. Despite that limited release, it still won the entire box office for the weekend, giving Netflix its first number one box office title in its 18-year history. Several songs from its soundtrack are simultaneously in the Billboard Top 10. So… what in the world is “KPop Demon Hunters” about, and is this something our kids should be watching? The answers might surprise you. Episode Links Given that the movie has the word “demon” in the title, it's not surprising that today's conversation raised issues regarding the paranormal world. Dr. White gave a series at Mecklenburg Community Church (Meck) called “Paranormal” that you may be interested in checking out - particularly the installment that maps out the spiritual world. You can find that series on Church & Culture HERE. Dr. White mentioned that when it comes to what you allow your kids to watch, including this movie, what's most important is to seize the opportunity to have really good spiritual conversations with your kids. He referenced a recent blog written by our MecKidz team - the children's program at Meck. The blog is titled “‘KPop Demon Hunters': How to Engage Movies and TV with your Kids,” and can be found HERE. Edition No228 | 20-08-2025 - So many of Putin's publicly faithful minions are dropping like flies. Businessmen, oligarchs, apparatchiks, minigarchs and occasionally intelligence personnel. This compels us to ask the question, is everything ok Vova? Are you worried about something? Are people plotting behind your back? Are they whispering about you? Or does Putin need to push some people out of the way (permanently) to make way for more fervent or more brutal loyalists? We record this episode as another oligarch has just joined the great Kobzon concert (концерт Кобзона) in the sky, in what seems to be somewhat mysterious circumstances, yet again. In August 2025, Mikhail Kenin, co‑founder and largest shareholder of Samolet Group (29% holding) — Russia's largest housing developer—died suddenly, aged 57. The company eulogized him: “Mikhail Borisovich was one of those people who leave their mark on the earth… endowed with natural talents… an excellent organiser…” (fakti.bg). But in Putin's dictatorship, you should not believe in coincidences. Russia's “vertical of power” operates without rule of law, without an impartial judiciary, without an independent legislature. This breeds a system steeped in theft, violence, and fear — eerily reminiscent of the lawless 1990s, but then the state was weak. Now we have lawlessness of the 90s combined with an overweening, powerful and paranoid state apparatus reminiscent of the 1930s. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: “Chekism” and KGB/FSB control over leadership (Wilson Center, Le Monde.fr, The New Yorker)Favarel‑Garrigues on anti‑corruption as elite discipline (Sciences Po)CSIS “Repression Trap” analysis of violence escalationWikipedia on ‘krysha', crime in 1990s Russia Medvedev's *A War Made in Russia*, mafia honor code ("ponyatiya") (Le Monde.fr)New Yorker on Kremlin-linked oligarchs and feudal orderMikhail Kenin: Fakti.bg, bne IntelliNews, AIMGROUP, UAWireAndrey Badalov: The Moscow Times, Echo, Global News, OilPriceRavil Maganov: Reuters, The Guardian, PoliticoMikhail Rogachev: Newsweek, The Times, RedditSergei Protosenya: RFERL, Business Insider, The Barents Observer, Economic TimesAvayev and Tyulyakov: Wikipedia, Reuters, Novaya Gazeta, MeduzaShulman, Melnikov, Watford: TheWeek, RFE, MeduzaAlexei Navalny: TIME, The Guardian, AP News, WSJSkripal: Wikipedia (Wikipedia)----------DESCRIPTION:The Brutal Reality of Russia's Power Structure: Oligarchs Falling Like FliesIn this gripping episode of Silicon Bites, we delve into the increasingly precarious position of Russia's elite under Putin's regime. Many student loan borrowers are falling behind again, and the impact is more than financial.A recent change in federal law has reshaped student loan repayment, and as collections ramp back up, millions are seeing their credit scores drop. If you're feeling the weight of repayment, you're not alone. Neile Simon joins us today with practical steps to help you regain control.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance.Major Changes in Federal Student Loan RepaymentIn early July, sweeping legislation restructured federal student loan repayment options. Borrowers now face only two choices:Standard Repayment Plan: Lasting 10 to 25 yearsRepayment Assistance Plan (RAP): A 30-year plan with payments based on 1% to 10% of the borrower's income, with a minimum of $10 per monthWhile RAP may seem like a helpful tool, the new law eliminated borrower-friendly plans such as the SAVE plan and many income-driven repayment options. For borrowers who are unemployed or experiencing hardship, this is a significant loss. The end of pandemic-era protections, including deferments, has left many unprepared and falling behind.Adding to the challenge, federal collections resumed on May 5, signaling a firm end to COVID-19 relief. The result? A wave of financial instability. The Credit Score CrisisThe fallout from these changes has been swift and painful. According to AP News, in the first quarter of this year alone:Over 2.2 million borrowers experienced a credit score drop of more than 100 points.Over 1 million borrowers experienced a decrease of more than 150 points. This sharp decline has made it difficult for individuals to secure new credit. Car loans, mortgages, and even rental approvals are now being denied. With limited disposable income, many are forced to choose between paying rent, student loans, or credit cards.More people are relying on credit cards just to cover essentials like groceries and gas. It's a cycle that only deepens their debt and financial stress. How Credit Counseling Can HelpWhile Christian Credit Counselors doesn't directly manage student loans, they play a vital role for those overwhelmed by mounting credit card balances. Edition No213 | 03-08-2025 - Russia's new missile, Oreshnik—the "hazelnut" makes a comeback. Why now, and should we take these threats seriously? Putin has announced “mass production” of the missile complex, teased deployment in Belarus, and claimed it can “dual” U.S. defenses. But how real is it? What threat does Europe face? And how much is psychological propaganda and bluff? On August 1, 2025, President Putin announced alongside Belarus's Lukashenko that “Preparatory work is ongoing, and most likely we will be done with it before the year's end”, saying the first Oreshniki and their systems have entered service. That same day regime supporting outlets reported “serial production of the latest Oreshnik medium‑range missile system is under way,” with range up to 3,425 miles (5,500 km), able to strike Europe and parts of the US. (New York Post)Analysts remain skeptical. Oreshnik appears based on the RS‑26 Rubezh—functionally repackaged, not radically new. As one expert put it, it was "a series of old technologies ... put together in a new way"—perhaps only 10 % of which was new. (Wikipedia) U.S. officials emphasize it's still experimental, and Russia likely only has a limited number of them. So, while mass‑production is claimed, in truth it may mean only a small initial batch—and more psychological signalling than industrial capacity. Of course, the choice of warhead is just as important, in terms of what impact the munition can have. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: * Euronews (Aug 1, 2025, deployment announcement)* AP News (deployment in Belarus)* Business Insider (mass-production claims & analysis)* Wikipedia (Oreshnik detailed history & capabilities)* RUSI and RIAC commentary (technical & strategic analysis)* Foreign Policy on submunition threat* Le Monde on Dnipro deployment* Kyiv Independent / Zelensky parts warning* The Guardian on missile escalation context* The Sunday Times via Times (UK vulnerability gap)----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. After the devastating floods in central Texas, Erin and Alyssa reflect on the tragic loss of life, what went wrong, and what it means to “politicize a tragedy.” Then, journalist T.J. President Trump abruptly cut off a reporter during a Cabinet meeting when asked about a new Justice Department and FBI memo on Epstein, calling questions about "this creep" a "desecration" of the ongoing Texas flood response. His dismissive tone—“Are people still talking about this guy?”—and his characterization of Epstein-related attention as a waste of time drew widespread criticism, with many viewing it as inappropriate and insensitive, particularly in light of serious child‑sex trafficking allegationThe backlash was immediate and widespread, cutting across political lines. Influencers, commentators, and longtime supporters alike criticized the President's tone, accusing him of minimizing a subject that demands accountability, not dismissal. Many saw his reaction as a disturbing attempt to shut down public inquiry into Epstein's enablers and associates. The timing of his comment—coming amid renewed scrutiny from the DOJ memo and public demands for transparency—only fueled the outrage. What was intended as a brush-off quickly turned into a flashpoint, reigniting questions about who is still being protected and why the Epstein story refuses to die.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Trump defends Bondi in face of growing criticism over Jeffrey Epstein files | AP News

Today's Headlines: A man threw Molotov cocktails at a Jewish community group in Boulder, Colorado, injuring six elderly people in what the FBI and DOJ are investigating as a targeted terror attack. In international news, Ukraine launched a major drone strike deep inside Russia without U.S. approval, just before announcing new ceasefire talks. Meanwhile, ceasefire efforts in Gaza stalled as Hamas rejected a U.S.-backed proposal, and over 30 people were killed at an aid site in Rafah. Tensions with China continue to rise, with Trump accusing them of violating tariff agreements, and responding to reports that China is restricting rare-earth exports. Trump also doubled tariffs on steel, days after approving a foreign acquisition of U.S. Steel. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused China of preparing for war over Taiwan, prompting international pushback. Meanwhile, Trump reportedly gets so few intelligence briefings that Tulsi Gabbard is considering turning them into Fox News-style video packages to hold his attention.
