In June 2024, I got to go to the Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, Massachusetts, which is organized by the band Wilco. I performed some of my new songs, and I got to interview Jeff Tweedy, the lead singer of Wilco, on stage as part of the festival. Jeff, in addition to being in Wilco and the band Tweedy, and putting out his solo albums, has also written three books. And this conversation was focused on his second book, which is called How to Write One Song. And even though it's called How to Write One Song, I think it actually contains a lot of insight about creativity in general, and life in general. I've recommended it to friends of mine who aren't songwriters. And, as you'll hear, the conversation gets pretty personal for me, because I got so much out of the book personally. It helped me with some of the blocks that I'd been facing in my own songwriting, at a pretty profound level. And when I was listening back to this recording, I'd kind of forgotten about how much I put out there in front of Jeff and the thousands of people who were there watching. But I'm glad the conversation was recorded, partly just so I could revisit it, but also so that I could share it here on Song Exploder. I hope you'll enjoy it, too.You can buy How to Write One Song by Jeff Tweedy here (via Bookshop.org) or here (via Amazon) or on Wilco's website. You can listen to the Wilco episode of Song Exploder here. I also interviewed Jeff along with his son Spencer, who is also his bandmate in Tweedy, about their relationship and musical partnership, for an episode of my podcast Partners. You can listen to that here. Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.For more, visit songexploder.net/jeff-tweedy.

In this episode of Shoving Wilco, host Todd Rossnagel sits down with fellow Wilco devotee and music industry veteran Chris Campbell, whose YouTube channel is a treasure trove of insight on vinyl, alt-country, and, of course, Wilco.Todd and Chris dive deep into how Wilco arrived in their lives at the perfect time, with Chris tracing his journey from Uncle Tupelo to Being There, Summerteeth, and beyond. They swap personal connections to songs like “How to Fight Loneliness,” reflect on Jeff Tweedy's lyrical honesty, and explore what Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sounded like in a post-9/11 New York City—where Chris was front row at the band's legendary shows. This one's for the vinyl nerds, the alt-country lifers, and anyone who has ever felt like Tweedy wrote a song just for them.
On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Adam's next pick, Wilco's "A.M." Released in 1995, it was their debut album. The band was formed following a series of disputes between Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar of Uncle Tupelo, with Tweedy going on to form Wilco and Farrar going on to form Son Volt. Both "A.M." and Son Volt's album "Trace" were highly anticipated because of the turmoil in Uncle Tupelo. Ultimately, "Trace" became the more critically respected album, and Wilco eventually moved on from the alt-country/country-rock sound of this album, producing two extremely well received albums in the 2000s, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" in 2001 and "A Ghost is Born" in 2004, which won two Grammy Awards. But is this album a relic of an acrimonius split in a well respected group? Will the boys think "I Must be High?" Come along and find out!

Medicine is often framed as a meritocracy, where intelligence, hard work, and dedication dictate success. Yet, institutions of medicine are shaped by histories of exclusion, bias, and systemic inequities. And for clinicians coming from marginalized backgrounds, the journey is not just about learning the science. It's also about learning an entirely different set of rules — rules that are unspoken and unwritten, but deeply felt. For Damon Tweedy, MD, this struggle was deeply personal. Raised in a working class, all-black neighborhood, medicine once felt worlds away. Earning a spot at Duke Medical School was a milestone, but it came with new challenges. The paradox of being both visible and invisible; of constantly proving — sometimes subtly, sometimes forcefully — that he belonged. Dr. Tweedy talks about the paradox of striving to be “twice as good,” while still being mistaken for the janitor, turning down an invitation to play golf with faculty because he simply did not know the game, and realizing that for some of his classmates, medicine was not a leap into the unknown, but simply an inheritance. Beyond race, this episode is also about identity, resilience, and what happens when personal history collides with professional expectation. It's about how trust in medicine is built or broken not just for doctors, but for patients. Dr. Tweedy shares how his own experiences have shaped the way he interacts with patients, why he approaches conversations with more humility, and why sometimes the most important thing a doctor can do is simply acknowledge the weight that a patient carries into the exam room. Ultimately, this episode is about the search for authenticity in a system that often demands conformity. In this episode, you'll hear about: 3:24 - Dr. Tweedy's path to medicine and his experience as a black first-generation college student 14:08 - How Dr. Tweedy navigates experiences of being discriminated against as a black physician24:58 - Dr. Tweedy's approach to navigating discriminatory experiences between patients and trainees 29:56 - Dr. Tweedy's path to becoming a public voice regarding race and medicine 32:07 - The current approach to teaching race and medicine in medical school, and Dr. Tweedy's thoughts on how it can be improved. 43:42 - Effectively serving patients of different racial backgrounds without falling into profiling or prejudice 48:49 - Dr. Tweedy's advice for new medical students Dr. Damon Tweedy is the author of Black Man in a White Coat (2016) and Facing the Unseen (2024).Dr. Tweedy can be found on Twitter/X at @damontweedymd.Visit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. When we wrote our book, ADHD Is Awesome, one of the areas we wanted to cover more was the under-diagnosis of ADHD amongst minority populations. White children get diagnosed with ADHD at a rate of 11.5% while Black children get diagnosed at a rate of 8.9%. Additionally, studies have shown that Black children with symptoms of ADHD are treated more negatively by teachers and other adults. This week, we talk to Dr. Damon Tweedy, a professor of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine (and our friend) to learn more.Dr. Tweedy is the author of two books, Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine and Facing the Unseen: The Struggle to Center Mental Health in Medicine. His first book made the New York Times bestseller list and was selected by TIME Magazine as a top non-fiction book that year. Dr. Tweedy has been featured in publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Discover Magazine. We discuss Dr. Tweedy's personal stories about probably having ADHD himself along with the complicated issue of what it means to be Black and have ADHD. Immediately after Uncle Tupelo co-leaders Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy parted ways 30 years ago, bassist John Stirratt and his fellow bandmates followed Tweedy into a new band, Wilco. Now Stirratt and Tweedy are the only members left from that original lineup, and Stirratt reflects on Wilco's exciting, turbulent early years as well as the more stable past two decades with the same lineup. Then there's Stirratt's other band, the Autumn Defense, which he and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone (who joined Wilco later) formed to highlight their melodic songwriting and sweet lead vocals. Ten years have passed since the last Autumn Defense album, but a new one is coming. From playing with the unpredictable Alex Chilton while a young man in the South (and singing his songs later) to entering the hospitality industry from his current home in Maine and being on call for Wilco, the ever-gracious Stirratt has many adventures to share.
Dr. Tweedy is in charge of the dance at his school. Sugar Kane of The Gum Drops is the bandleader but there are some complications in store.

Ottawa's Tooth & Nail is both one of Ontario's most heralded and more underrated breweries at the same time. They've made our Top 10 Breweries in Ontario list every year due to their incredibly well-crafted beers, and it's a crime that we waited three years to catch up with Matty. Cee and Nate chatted with Matt about how they got their initial traction via Vim & Vigor, why he doesn't dry hop Pilsners, why foam is essential in beer, when beer stopped being a hobby, how they came up with their Extra Pale Ale, Matt's desert island beers, his love for Belgian beers and his collab project with Bim of Godspeed, why Centennial might be the GOAT of hops, and the importance of educating the consumer. They got into Grace & Gratitude Whole Cone Saaz Hop Lager, Vim & Vigor Pilsner, Exile Extra Pale Ale, Valor Classic Saison, Rabble Rouser India Pale Ale, and Fortitude Stout. Near the start of his recently released book World Within a Song, Jeff Tweedy admits there's probably some parallel timeline where this one is his first, not third, book. It is, after all, dedicated to a subject he's “thought about the most by far: other people's songs.” Through a series of comical stories and humble reflections, the Wilco leader puts together a playlist with the book. It's a wide ranging one at that, covering the spectral, alt-country slow-core combo Souled American to gospel purity of The Staples Singers to the abrasive rapture of Suicide. Songs, Tweedy insists, teach us how to be human, how, to quote Tweedy ”universally vast the experience of listening to almost anything with intent and openness can be. And most importantly, how songs absorb and enhance our own experiences and store our memories.” Tweedy has penned plenty of songs that fit that bill for me personally, and that's why I'm so glad to welcome him to this week's installment of Transmissions. This year, Wilco celebrated a milestone: 20 years of the band's current lineup: founding members Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, keyboard player Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. They aren't commemorating with a rest. They're staging another installment of their Solid Sound Festival, June 28-30th at MASS MoCA In North Adams, MA. And they've got a new EP on the way too, Hot Sun Cool Shroud, out June 28 via their dBpm label, which they'll debut at the festival. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Domenic Sciortino is a creative powerhouse. By day, he's a barber. Much of the rest of the time, he's an artist, musician, and now, a talent buyer for a local entertainment venue in Pennsylvania. Dom was one of my first guests on the podcast, and I'm thrilled to have him back to talk about the intersection of art and commerce, with stops at creative courage (specifically, the courage to fail in and with a crowd), why you should always aim to please yourself first with your creative work (even if you want to sell it), the effects of ignoring our creative call, and just what happens behind the scenes of the performing arts—especially on the money side. In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia and special guest Arun Mehta from The Arun Mehta Show discuss about the 2023 stop motion animated film Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to the 2000 stop motion animated film Chicken Run animated by Aardman Animation. Taking place after Chicken Run, the chickens from Tweedy's farm have settled in a bird sanctuary. Ginger and Rocky have gotten married and had a daughter named Molly, who is just as rambunctious and adventurous as her father and wanting to know what's outside the sanctuary for freedom as her mother. However, due to their upbringing, they overprotect her. Molly runs away from the sanctuary and is captured by a farm that is happy, fun, and friendly, but has a dark secret. It's up to Ginger, Rocky, Bunty, Babs, Mac, Nick, and Fetcher to rescue Molly from the farm by breaking into it. When the film premiered on Netflix, it had gotten positive reviews from critics and viewers calling it a good successor to the first film with its animation, characters, and story, but not without bringing up the controversy behind replacing Julia Sawalha as Ginger because of ageism. Was it worth the 23 year long wait? What did Arun and Patricia think of it? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support
