Where does your school stand in terms of designing, implementing and measuring the effectiveness of its whole-school wellness program? Several of our thought-leader guests have told us that wellness is at the top of the to do list for many international schools. Along with Wellness, another recurring topic in our episodes is change management, especially around the development of new programs. We hear stories about initiative fatigue and the dropping of programs when their champions leave the school. With so much talk around wellness and change management we decided to invite Alison Leathwood on the show to share an overview of how to design and implement a schoolwide wellness program that is sustainable. Alison is an international school physical education teacher who is passionate about wellness. She is dedicated to equipping students with the tools they need for both physical and emotional wellbeing. She extends this passion beyond the classroom, having served in various leadership roles including HS Advisory Curriculum Coordinator, EC-12 Personal Development Coordinator, Wellness Committee Chair and currently serving as the Head of Department for PE. Through these leadership roles, Alison strives to create a lasting positive impact on the social-emotional well-being of the entire school community. Our guiding question for this show was, “How might international school leaders approach the development of a school- and community-wide wellness program based on Positive Psychology?”Alison offered such a detailed framework along with so many practical strategies that it is futile to try and summarize them here. So I will share just a handful of the topics to whet your appetite for designing an effective wellness program at your school! Here they are:Using a Positive Psychology approach to wellnessLeveraging Character Strengths and the PERMAH pillarsThe who, what, when, where, why and how of implementing a wellness programOther factors that will affect the success of your wellness programResources mentioned in the episode:Alison's Resource folderDavid's Wellness@ES site for integrating Pos Psych into the elementary schoolAlison's Contact Information: LinkedInX: @peleathwood This episode was recorded on February 24, 2025.Categories: Wellness | Leadership | Change Remember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information or to subscribe to our newsletter!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube. This week we are dealing with a classic “My FBI partner's being impersonated by a shapeshifting alien with ill intent” situation while we discuss “Without”! We're talking how everyone in this episode had a wicked case of heatstroke, how much Kersh loves to enunciate, our new favorite character Agent Walkie Talkie, how Skinner has earned the right to do the flashlight X, and how heartwarming it is that Scully and Skinner get to point their guns and scream at each other again. #CoupleGoals. We laugh at Doggett sneaking a Get Well Soon card to Scully in the weirdest way possible, wonder for the 700th time where Gibson's parents are, Scully having the endurance to jog after a kid on a bike for an entire hour, and one more SCULLAY for the road. Sad face. Half the episode is spent trying to squeeze in a “this Dog(gett) won't hunt” joke, but that's pretty much par for the course.Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

SHOW NOTES: On this show…our goal is to dig deep and find the resilience within as we aim to navigate healing with a positive mindset. It is a fact of neurology that the brain cannot be in a state of appreciation and a state of fear at the same time. The two states may alternate but are mutually exclusive. But how can you find gratitude and positivity when facing the fear of the unknown? Whether you've been delivered an unwelcomed diagnosis, struggling to transition to a healthier lifestyle, or facing the inevitable aging process, research suggests that a positive mindset can have tangible effects on physical health and healing. But breaking down is hard and upsetting and why common sentiments for Get Well Soon cards include patience, looking at the brighter side, and a speedy recovery. With any process though, there are always ups and downs and an ample supply of setbacks which can certainly test your resolve. So hang in there! Our goal is to connect some of these thoughts to let you know, you aren't alone and to give you some strategies that might illuminate the dark spots and give you motivation to move forward when you feel stuck. I wanted to cover this topic as I continue to dig deep to fuel my own resilience. Before I share my own struggles, let me put things into perspective, I am beyond blessed. Besides three surgeries to bring my wonderful children into the world and one surgery to end that era, I have been extremely healthy my whole life. Besides two vitamin gummies a day, I'm fortunate not to be in need of any medication. I rarely get sick and am almost always in a good mood. Very blessed. For 15 years though, I have dealt with back and neck issues. Now, I wish I had an incredible story to go along with these injuries like fighting crime and saving the world but I don't. I have sat myself to death. Once a dancer, outside sales rep, and even a personal trainer, since 2002 I've sat at a desk doing software sales, marketing, and management. Technology is so convenient, bringing the word to you, where you sit but no one really thought of the damage it could do to your body by not forcing you to go out and get it. A complete breakdown in your foundational structure, your spine. Humans are built to stand upright. Your heart and cardiovascular system work more effectively that way. Around 82% of all workers spend the majority of their working day seated. For the average desk worker, this is often 9 hours or more. 65% of these people develop musculoskeletal (MSK) issues like back pain. And I'm not sure how related your vertebrae are, I mean they sit so close together, and for some, bone on bone. But I'm sure they talk because when one has a problem, it doesn't take long before others are catching on. Let's start unpacking these ideas starting with the elephant in the room, Planning for positivity: Finding the bright side when you're dealing with a chronic condition found at optum.com Elizabeth Perry shares more info on Hardship and the mind-body connection: the effects of low resilience found at betterup.com At the National Institute of Health I found Positive Emotions and Your Health - Developing a Brighter Outlook By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you can navigate the healing process with a positive mindset, empowering yourself to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side. Acceptance: Acknowledge your current situation and accept it without judgment. Recognize that healing is a process and setbacks are normal Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Celebrate small victories and progress, no matter how incremental. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding during the healing process. Be gentle with yourself and avoid self-criticism. Optimistic Outlook: Cultivate a hopeful and optimistic attitude. Believe in your ability to heal and overcome challenges. Mindfulness and Presence: Practice mindfulness to stay present in the moment and avoid dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Surround Yourself with Support: Seek out a supportive network of friends, family, or professionals who can provide encouragement and assistance when needed. Healthy Habits: Take care of your physical and mental well-being by maintaining healthy habits such as exercise, nutritious eating, and adequate sleep. Gratitude: Focus on the things you are grateful for, even during difficult times. Gratitude can help shift your perspective and promote a positive mindset. Visualization and Affirmations: Use visualization techniques and positive affirmations to envision your healing journey and reinforce your belief in a positive outcome. Seek Professional Help: Don't hesitate to seek professional support if needed, whether it's therapy, counseling, or medical treatment. A trained CHALLENGE: Finding resilience and staying positive during the healing process is essential for promoting overall well-being, facilitating physical and emotional recovery, and empowering you to overcome adversity and thrive in the face of challenges. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Currently, 17 US states have reported a mysterious respiratory illness in dogs. As hype escalates on social media, fueled by TikTok and TMZ, how should veterinary professionals educate their pet parents and keep their pet patients safe during this holiday season? Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, MPA, RVT, tackle the tough topic of how to address an unknown newsworthy canine respiratory illness and practicality and medically. Our hosts also have advice for “veterinary influencers” seeking to capitalize on the issue and steps more reasonable veterinary medical professionals can take to combat excessive sensationalization (and potentially capitalization) on a serious pet health issue. IYKYK Viewfinders, this is a serious topic that needs more tempered and measured responses from the veterinary medical community. How are you dealing with your clients' questions, and what safeguards are you enacting this holiday season to keep your pet patients safe during the holidays? Share your advice on our Facebook and Instagram pages, @VeterinaryViewfinder, or drop us a line (and Beckie a “Get Well Soon” note) at VeterinaryViewfinder@gmail.com.
It's Thanksgiving in the United States this week, and that means the holiday season has begun. Besides family, food, and fun, the holidays can also bring stress, anxiety, and dread. This week, we're joined by Liz Hughston, MEd, RVT, LVT, CVT, VTS (SAIM, ECC) to discuss tips and tactics to help you survive the holidays with a smile. Host Dr. Ernie Ward is missing co-host Beckie Mossor, MPA, RVT, as she is recovering from an accident. Beckie is doing well, and we'll share the full story soon. Meanwhile, drop her a “Get Well Soon” message on our socials or email at veterinaryviewfinder@gmail.com. Liz and Ernie begin by tackling the problematic origins of Thanksgiving in the United States and offer how they're reconciling the holiday with history. The pair then discuss their different gratitude practices and why gratitude is good for your mental well-being. Liz shares how some veterinary practices incorporate gratitude into their daily huddles. Dr. Ward explains why he believes we must be more openly positive in our business and personal lives. Both reveal how they deal with criticism over being too optimistic (or pushing for change) and why everyone needs to, in Dr. Ward's words, “start each day tilted toward optimism.” Viewfinders, this podcast has loads of practical tips and real-life stories. We recommend you listen to it before your Thanksgiving visits or immediately afterward to decompress. Regardless of when you listen, we hope you'll find something to make your holidays a little brighter! Beckie, get well soon! We miss you!

LIBRA, IT'S YOUR TIME TO SHINE! And Susan Miller is here to tell you how to do that. However, this month she delivers the news in an abbreviated form due to the most Susan reason ever. She is suffering from an eye infection that has left her unable to see and therefore unable to deliver the lengthy and whimsical horoscopes to which we've become accustomed. But what is lost this month in fanciful language is made up for in insight into Susan's process. The gals start this episode with an explanation of why the horoscopes were posted early. Early! During the previous month! Laura and Alex are fairly certain that in the long history of Astrology Zone that this has never happened. The gals discuss the pros and cons (mostly pros tbh!) of these shorter forecasts and wonder if Susan should consider some changes to her writing process overall. Laura and Alex then tell Libra what October will bring them and the answer is money! Although oddly Libras may still feel the need to hit up their parents for some extra cash.
