November 1, 1974. North Adams, Massachusetts. After leaving a dance at a local lodge, 18-year old Kim Benoit goes missing. Two weeks later, Kim's body is discovered at the bottom of an embankment in a remote area twelve miles away and it is determined that she was the victim of strangulation. In October 1976, 17-year old Cynthia “Rocky” Krizack goes missing after leaving her home in the nearby town of Williamstown and her body is also eventually found at the bottom of a remote embankment. Since Rocky has been strangled to death and there are similarities between the two cases, investigators look into the possibility that she was killed by the same person who murdered Kim, but both crimes remain unsolved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a pair of cold cases from the Berkshires. September 12, 1983. Wyoming, Ohio. 59-year old Dorothea Irwin is found stabbed to death inside her residence. Since she was in the midst of selling the house and said she was meeting an interested buyer, it is theorized that this person murdered her as part of an elaborate set-up. Suspicion turns towards Dorothea's son, John “Jay” Irwin, who had previously spent time in prison for fraud and encouraged his mother to put her home up for sale. Jay eventually commits some additional fraud schemes and becomes a wanted fugitive until he is captured in 1991, but no conclusive evidence links him or anyone else to Dorothea's murder. Who was responsible for killing Dorothea Irwin and what could their motive have been? We shall attempt to answer that question on this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical, and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week New York and Frieze Week LA. The 12th Edition of SPRING/BREAK Art Show New York City will be held from September 6th - 11th, 2023, with details on their 5th LA Exhibition to come. Founded by Andrew Gori and Ambre Kelly in 2009, The They Co. creative supergroup has organized, curated, facilitated and produced events with the New Museum, Brooklyn College, Art Hamptons, Flux Factory, Collective Show, Nuit Blanche New York, Silvershed, The Metric System, The Underground Library, Gowanus Studio Space, and numerous other community-based arts organizations. Reno, Nevada. 25-year old Star Palumbo is found wandering around through a restricted area at Reno-Tahoe International Airport and tells security that she is looking for her sister, even though she does not have one. An officer drives Star to the nearby Hilton Hotel and Casino and drops her off, but she soon vanishes without trace and her abandoned car is discovered at the airport one day later. Since Star had been displaying erratic and paranoid behaviour prior to her disappearance, investigators explore the possibility that she was on drugs or suffered some sort of mental breakdown, but even though there are a number of unconfirmed rumours about what might have happened to Star, no trace of her is ever found.  October 28, 1991. San Francisco, California. After last being seen at a hospital, 29-year old Selena Edon inexplicably disappears and breaks off all contact with her loved ones. Two years earlier, Selena had suffered a serious brain injury in a motorcycle accident which caused memory issues and made it difficult for her to take care of herself. Two days earlier, a phone call between Amanda and Lee had abruptly cut off and since her broken cell phone is found on the floor, police initially believe that Amanda was attacked and her death was a homicide. However, after failing to turn up any strong suspects or forensic evidence pointing towards an outside party, investigators start to consider the possibility that Amanda actually suffered an accidental fatal fall down the stairs. July 14, 1994. Rochester, Pennsylvania. After leaving her home, 14-year old Sarah Boehm goes missing and a cryptic letter is soon found inside her bedroom. Even though Sarah supposedly wrote about being in a relationship with an abusive man and expressed a desire to run away, the authorities question the legitimacy of the letter and wonder if it may have been intended to mislead the investigation. Over three months later, a murdered Jane Doe is found 50 miles away in the Berlin Lake Wildlife Area in Ohio and in 2003, the victim is positively identified as Sarah. It turns out that the body of another murdered girl, 17-year old Kathryn Menendez, was found in the same wildlife area one month after Sarah originally went missing. Even though Kathryn lived only a few miles away and there is no apparent connection between the two victims, investigators explore the possibility that they were both killed by the same perpetrator. This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers the murders of two teenage girls which have gone unsolved for 30 years and we will also briefly discuss the murder of 16-year old Anna Marie Callahan, which took place in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania in October 1995. June 16, 1991. Denver, Colorado. An armed gunman commits a robbery from the underground vault at the United Bank Tower on Father's Day and makes off with $197,000 in cash. While the six employees from the vault are allowed to live, the assailant fatally shoots four guards: 41-year old Phillip Mankoff, 21-year old Todd Wilson, 33-year old William McCullom Jr. and 21-year old Scott McCarthy. Two-and-a-half weeks later, a 54-year old retired police officer named James King, who once worked as a guard at United Bank, is arrested and charged with the robbery and the murders. However, since the stolen money is never recovered and no physical evidence links King to the crime, the case against him is very circumstantial and King is acquitted of all charges at trial. Was James King actually responsible for this crime or did law enforcement allow the real perpetrator to get away with it? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial unsolved bank robbery/quadruple homicide which has become known as “The Father's Day Bank Massacre”. Episode No. 655 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast is a holiday clips episode featuring artist Teresita Fernández. Fernández is included in "Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s-today" at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. It is the first major group exhibition in the United States to envision a new approach to contemporary art in the Caribbean diaspora, foregrounding forms that reveal new modes of thinking about identity and place. Over 20 artists are featured in this exhibition, many of whom live in the Caribbean or are of Caribbean heritage. "Forecast Form originated at the MCA Chicago. It was curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates, with Iris Colburn, Isabel Casso and Nolan Jimbo. This segment with Fernández was recorded in 2014 when Fernández  created a major new series of installations for MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass. Titled “As Above So Below.” That show included three large-scale installations that are informed by Fernández's interest in landscape, art about landscape, and our perception of landscape, including Black Sun, Sfumato (Epic) and Lunar (Theatre).  In 2005 Fernández received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” fellowship. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MOCA North Miami, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Artpace, the ICA Philadelphia, Castello di Rivoli outside Turin, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and more.

In this episode, we share the audio from a breakout session at STS Massachusetts in 2023. In the busiest moments of His ministry and when Jesus felt weakest, He often withdrew; retreated. Pastors in small places of small churches know how busy ministry can be and how few resources are available (time, funds, pulpit coverage, etc) So, how can one consider the idea of a retreat when the demands are so much and resources so precious? This interactive breakout will highlight the importance of retreats but focus on providing practical tools on how to retreat so busy small town pastors can find distance from everyday life, pursue presence with God and His Word, so they return to ministry with enduring purpose. Paul Gordon has been in pastoral ministry since 2010 and since 2015 has been working to see a church planted in North Adams, MA. Paul juggles being a church planter, an Executive Pastor for the family of Terra Nova Churches, the director of the Village Green Collective along with being a husband to Nicole and father to Margot & Elgin. Despite the busyness you will often catch Paul retreating - especially in November when retreats are spent in his deer stands. Episode No. 647 is a holiday weekend clips episode featuring artist Kahlil Robert Irving. The Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in Saint Louis is presenting "Kahlil Robert Irving: Archaeology of the Present" through July 29. "Archaeology of the Present" is a presentation of new Irving sculptures, video, and found objects. Irving has situated his sculptures and other items within a large plywood platform, resembling a stage. Viewers can move onto the structure to encounter both artworks and manufactured objects alike. The episode was taped in 2023 when Irving was included in “I'll Be Your Mirror: Art and the Digital Screen” at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The exhibition was an examination of the screen's vast impact on art from 1969 to the present. It was curated by Alison Hearst. Concurrently, the exhibition now at the Kemper had just opened at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. It was curated by William Hernández Luege. At the Kemper, the show was curated by Meredith Malone. Irving's assemblages of images and replicas of every day objects challenge constructions of Western identity and culture. His ceramic sculptures incorporate neglected objects that represent a historical moment, as do his room-sized, image-driven installations. Irving has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis; he's been featured in group exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass., the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and more.

Bestie Lizzie No has just released their career-defining new record Halfsies and we are 100% here for it on our 250th episode!! lizzie, who co-hosts Basic Folk, put her entire being, identity and creativity into this project. There's a lot going on with their main character, the avatar Miss Freedomland, and we're getting to the bottom of it in our conversation. Our hero's journey begins even before the main character is born. Her inception grew out of disdain for childhood beauty pageants, which lizzie's mother actually won back in the early 60's at a now defunct amusement park called Freedomland. And there are photos of Little Catherine Quinlan with a look of disgust on her five year old face. lizzie grew up with this story and as she got older, she began to think hard about societal expectations and the stock put into women and children's emotional expression through their faces. Lizzie also grew up hearing and saying the word "No," hence the stage name.Enter Miss Freedomland (also the name of lizzie's new record label)! She has been tasked with a journey to become free, which will require inner healing, exploration of self-identity and giving up performance of gender that just feels wrong. The album starts with our main character trying to level up (because, yes, this is a video game) with her own self-expression, revisiting past traumas and shedding the baggage and the hot garbage that got her trapped in the first place. In our conversation, we go track by track through this showstopper of a record and even get some solo live performances. I hope you enjoy exploring lizzie's world as much as I did. These songs are brilliant and the concept executed remarkably. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep. 168 features Chase Hall's (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota). His paintings and sculptures respond to generational celebrations and traumas encoded throughout American history. Responding to a variety of social and visual systems, each of which intersects with complex trajectories of race, hybridity, economics, and personal agency, Hall generates images whose materiality is as crucial to their compositional makeup as their indelible approach to representation. A central body of paintings, made with drip-brew techniques derived from coffee beans and acrylic pigments on cotton supports, is notable for both its conceptual scope and its intimacy. The use of brewed coffee carries powerful symbolic weight since it evokes centuries-old geopolitical systems associated with the commodification of a plant native to Africa, but in Hall's hands, it also becomes a means of achieving subtle visual textures, a range of brown skin tones, and a mark-making vocabulary precipitated on the closeness of touch. Above all, however, it is his improvisational willingness to immerse himself in the indefinable personal hieroglyphics of each picture that gives his work its resonance and impact. Chase Hall was the subject of a solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia in 2023. In 2022, Hall was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to produce a large-scale artwork, the monumental diptych Medea Act I & II, for its opera house in New York, on view through June 2023. Hall has been included in group exhibitions including Together in Time: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection, Hammer Museum (2023), Los Angeles; Black American Portraits, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2021); Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art, University of Illinois Chicago (2021); and This Is America | Art USA Today, Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Hall has been an artist-in-residence at The Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), North Adams, Massachusetts; and Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, Maine. Hall's work is in the permanent collections of institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Art; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Baltimore Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
