Ruth Lue-Quee is joined for a final episode in this series by Professor David Daley, to discuss reinforcing positive behaviour in Early Years Settings. David talks about the importance of labelled praise and letting the child know exactly what they have done well, so this reenforces their behaviours in the future. Ruth and David discuss “earshotting” - giving more praise to a child by communicating good behaviours to peers and other educators in front of the child. Reward charts and how best to implement them are discussed, as well as the evolution of this tool into everyday adult life. Practitioners will learn that reinforcement techniques and rewards shouldn't be feared, and how neuroscience has shown that young people can become self-motivated to do more by themselves with the support of praise and reward.
In this episode, host Ruth Lue-Quee is joined by Professor David Daley to discuss supporting a child's behaviour before escalation arises, and investing time to put processes in place that will support self-regulation. The discussion can help practitioners understand how to best calm down a child whose behaviour may be escalating, and David emphasises the importance of being prepared and acting quickly. Calm down spots, designated calming kit trays and communication methods are mentioned as options to help support behaviour.

Ruth Lue-Quee is joined again by Professor David Daley, to discuss proactive behaviour strategies in Early Years Settings. David talks about the importance of creating predictable environments for learning and shares tips for how to help SEN children be comfortable with timings and their environment. In 1971, Lewis Powell, a tobacco industry lawyer and future Supreme Court justice, penned a memo calling on conservatives and business interests to make the nation's legal system far more friendly to corporate power. A few years later, a lawyer named Michael Horowitz penned a follow-up memo calling for conservatives to indoctrinate generations of lawyers as the right's foot soldiers on the ground. Today on Lever Time, senior podcast producer Arjun Singh talks to David Sirota and Jared Jacang Maher about their deep-dive investigation into this 50-year plan in the hit new Lever podcast Master Plan. Then, he sits down with journalist David Daley to discuss his latest book, Antidemocratic: Inside the Far Right's 50-Year Plot to Control American Elections. Daley's book centers around Chief Justice John Roberts, whose ascent to the high court — and the conservative rulings he's handed down — was the culmination of decades of work that began with Powell and Horowitz's memos.
My guest on this week's WhoWhatWhy podcast, David Daley, argues that the six weeks following Election Day 2024 could be more consequential than the entire campaign season. At a rally in Pennsylvania recently, Donald Trump said, “You know, they do polls on this stuff, and I'm at like 93 percent. So why are we having an election? They didn't have an election. Why are we having an election?'” It's a scary question when we consider that the next president of the United States might very well be decided by an unelected conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court. Daley, author of the new book Antidemocratic: Inside the Far Right's 50-Year Plot to Control American Elections, foresees a looming crisis that could dwarf the chaos of the 2000 election.

David Daley's new book “Antidemocratic: Inside the Far Right's 50-Year Plot to Control American Elections” is a deep dive into what Daley calls the “50-year republican plot to highjack voting rights in America." David Daley regularly discusses democracy and voting rights on CNN, NPR, MSNBC, and other outlets.
How democratic is American “democracy”. Dramatically less so that it was. That's at least the rather worrying conclusion of David Daley, the author of ANTIDEMOCRATIC, a new book which exposes what he says is “the far right's 50-year plot to control American elections”. This half century plot was successfully realized in 2013, Daley told me, with the Supreme Court's gutting of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now, he argues, individual states have the right to tamper with their electoral laws and hijack voting rights in America for their own political ends. It's not quite a return to Jim Crow, Daley says, but it does reveal the worryingly antidemocratic foundations of the American political system. David Daley is the author of the national best-seller "Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count" (Norton/Liveright) and one of the nation's leading experts on partisan gerrymandering. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by the Daley Family. Marketa and David Daley have been avid backpackers for many years, and have not let the addition of their three kids Sequoia (age 6), Joshua (age 4), and Standa (age 3) slow them down in the slightest. Their recent treks include thru-hikes of the Tahoe Rim Trail, 1,300 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, and 250 miles of the Appalachian Trail this year. Although we've interviewed thru-hiking families in the past, we cover some new ground here, including managing breastfeeding while backpacking, an honest portrayal of the challenges that come along with backpacking with three young kids and how that gets more challenging as the family grows, the events that are most likely to trigger meltdowns, dealing with critiques from the online community, and why they still wouldn't have it any other way. This is an insightful chat for anyone who's curious what it's like to backpack with multiple youngsters. We wrap the show with a story of a woman who was bitten by a black bear on the Appalachian Trail, the triple crown of backpacking-specific compliments, and an impromptu interview with a Patreon Chuck Norris Award Winner about backpacking on the Centennial Trail.
