A Very Opinionated Look At URGH! A MUSIC WAR--CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: An interview with Lesley Woods of Au PairsHello everyone! This week, I'm releasing this extra-special episode from the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon for everyone to hear! It's an incredible conversation with a complete legend—Lesley Woods of Au Pairs, who has also been an immigration lawyer in the UK for over thirty years.  Anyone who has been listening to the URGH! A MUSIC WAR PODCAST knows that Lesley's performance blew open my and Chaki's head with her slashing music and sexual politics lyrics…something that was new and necessary for young kids witnessing this film. So getting to talk to Lesley was an honor. We talk about the origin of Au Pairs at a bus stop, Lesley's political awakening in college, being banned by the BBC, how the podcast helped Lesley watch the film for the first time, the ever-present blood on her guitar, the band's first 7” Kerb Crawler, the way the band moved around on stage, what the band wanted to do differently on their 2nd LP, why the band gravitated towards music to dance to that was still protest music, the difference for Lesley writing music then and now, the incredible Urgh lineup they played with Gang of Four, Mekons & Steel Pulse, the trouble with music journalism and its attitudes towards women in the industry, how Lesley turned her back on music for a spell, why she turned to immigration and refugee law in the UK, freedom of expression and the right to hold your opinion, Thatcher's Section 28 law banning queer literature and references in schools, Gavin Friday of The Virgin Prunes, how Lesley found her way back to music and performing with members of Thurston Moore's band & Big Joanie, plus Lesley Woods explains why it really was an actual MUSIC WAR!!!If you enjoy the show, please consider joining at patreon.com/revolutionspermovie to support this completely independent endeavor (plus get access to over 170 episodes of Revolutions Per Movie, a 7" flexidisc with Ann Magnuson, Vanessa Briscoe Hay & Peter Buck, stickers, and more). Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Transmissions and we're going to start this week's show with a reading from Jennifer Kelly's review of the new Mekons album, Horror.  “Things are very bad, but then again, they always have been. That's Horror's argument in a nutshell, the 26th album from the legendary Mekons, a Leeds-born gaggle of instigators of punk rock anarchists that has been doing business for half a century now. It's a bracing thesis, enough to make you pull the covers off your head and stop moaning for a minute, because however insane and stupid and evil life becomes, it's oddly comforting to think that it's been this way for centuries...Though exacting and sometimes specific, [Horror] runs absolutely free of footnotes. Instead, its tales of ambition, colonialism, murder and pillage come wrapped in a bumptious swagger of rock ‘n roll noise—dipping into dub, country, punk, new wave and desolate torch singing to make its point." This week on the show, Jon Langford and Sally Timms of Mekons. They join us for one of the most directly political talks we've taped here for this show, as well as how current events shaped Horror, the gee-whiz space race imagination of America in the mid century, Judge Dredd, and much more. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. In my most recent Kreative Kontrol newsletter, I mentioned that I'd done a long-form interview with Will Oldham about his 2019 album, I Made a Place, but it was only used for a print piece, not for this podcast because, at the time, he was feeling ambivalent about being on pods. Sometime in the last couple of years, I asked Will if I could share this phoner, and he said yes, so here it is finally, virtually unedited. The conversation lasted about an hour and took place on Monday, September 29, 2019 at 11:00 AM ET, and you'll hear us discussing topics like, me attempting to call him using the telephone app on my MacBook, as I often did at the time, but for some reason my computer perplexingly launched a program I'd never used before called Zoom, the return of Bonnie “Prince” Billy music after a long absence, the albums of songs he made written by the likes of the Everly Brothers, Merle Haggard, Susanna, and Mekons, wariness about oversaturated streaming culture, recording a Ramones song with David Berman (who'd died on August 7, just weeks before this conversation) and thoughts on DCB, Will's love of Jake Xerxes Fussell, the Oldham family's lengthy history with and a then-recent pilgrimage to Hawaii, and much more. The wonderful new Bonnie “Prince” Billy album, The Purple Bird, is out now!To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/kreative-kontrol. Mark Wilson & Pete Barker in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWEISh0MznA Anarchic rockabilly beloved by the late John Peel. "If Elvis had been a Marx Brother, he would have invented Pink Peg Slax" (James Brown, NME) With a name derived from an obscure Eddie Cochran rocker, Pink Peg Slax promise rockabilly revivalism, but these veterans of the Leeds 80s music scene deliver musical subversion. Borne out of punk, the Slax line-up were original members of the Mekons, the Sisters of Mercy and The Gang of Four. Celebrated by John Peel and Andy Kershaw (4 Radio 1 sessions), the NME (3 singles and 2 albums gained 5-star reviews) and TV chef Keith Floyd (who wrote sleeve notes) Pink Peg Slax knocked out 100% original tunes with a deft rockabilly-cajun approach. Pink Peg Slax provided the necessary knowing wink to counter the gothic scowl on the face of indie music in the mid-80s. The Smiths released Meat Is Murder; the Slax released Eat More Meat. The only band ever to offer James Cagney impressions as serious musical output on night-time Radio One, Pink Peg Slax busked their way onto C4's The Tube, annoyed legions of Goths by supporting The Mission on tour and wrote songs about drunken pigs, deaf railwaymen, murderous Frenchmen and Holsten Pils. Frontman Vince Berkeley, often at odds with the world and the time of day, once thanked an audience of fairground workers for not being "gippos", told an indifferent audience in Dusseldorf to "go away and make some chemicals" and regularly spat on, kicked or threatened audience members he felt were disrespecting the band. And yet the band's Roman Catholicism led to album reviews in The Universe, the premier UK religious weekly. After a break of 20 years to raise families and conquer the world of work, Pink Peg Slax return with their original line-up and most of their hair intact..

It’s crazy to think that the postmodern, post-punk, post-human collective known as The Mekons are celebrating roughly 50 years together. These rebellious souls are still doing their thing, challenging and entertaining us at the same time. “You’re Not Singing Anymore” will find you ruminating on their acidic wit and most likely singing along to the chorus.

PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement.  While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave.  Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK.  Business was good, and it grew.  A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known.  The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era.  After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen.  It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers.  Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer.  Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded.  And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal.  Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album:     PULSARS's Info Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter:  https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

Jeff Jacquin & Joey Cevetello in conversation with David Eastaugh https://greyfactor.bandcamp.com/album/grey-factor-1979-1980-a-d-complete-studio-recordings Pioneers of the Los Angeles underground art damage electronic music scene, Grey Factor have been more myth than legend for over 40 years. The band recorded two experimental synth/post-punk EPs and gigged sparingly before disbanding. None of their recordings have been officially released in physical format until now. 1979-1980 A.D. - Complete Studio Recordings includes Grey Factor's two studio EPs remastered from the original analogue tapes and pressed on limited edition vinyl with a 16-page color booklet including archival photos, documents and flyers chronicling the band's brief existence. It marks the launch of Damaged Disco, the new label founded by producer and musician Dave Trumfio (Pulsars, The Mekons). In 1978 Jeff Jacquin, Joey Cevetello, Jon Pospisil, and Paul Fontana formulated the blueprint for their minimalist synth-based sound. Using what would today be considered a goldmine of vintage electronic equipment, they recorded The Perils of Popularity EP at Eldorado Recording Studios with a young engineer named Dave Jerden (prior to his work with The Talking Heads and Byrne/Eno). The EP was dubbed onto cassettes and distributed at one of the 20-odd gigs Grey Factor played at legendary L.A. punk venues like Madame Wong's, The Hong Kong Café, and The Masque. Word spread quickly, and the “too cool to care” underground crowd were soon cramming their way in to view this new phenomenon. In 1980, Paul Fontana left the band and was replaced by Anne Burns and Joey's brother, John Cevetello, to create The Feel of Passion EP. The synthesizer and drum machine setup of the first EP was expanded to include guitar and bass, female vocals and saxophone. After a confrontational performance on the groundbreaking, influential and first-of-its-kind cable TV show New Wave Theater, Grey Factor called it quits, the members deciding that there was just nothing else left to do.

I interviewed Andrew Butler from Hercules and Love Affair last year and he made a really great point about how the most exciting music is produced when one “scene” starts to fade but the next “big thing” hasn't yet arrived – l think of it like when a new star is being born from all this gas and dust coming together -  before the “rules” of that genre are established (cos that's what happens, right?) so it's much more volatile, experimental and liberated. So, just delving into the past a little bit….in the late 70's, it was time for a change…bands like Bush Tetras, The Pop Group, The Raincoats, Gang of Four, Pigbag, The Mekons and the band that Lesley fronted for a brief but hugely influential time were creating a fork in the road. The Au Pairs took their music in a direction that was as exciting as it was inventive, through a mighty rhythm section that made your hips shake (well, they made mine rattle even then) and the taut, jagged guitar and Lesley's distinctive vocals and lyrics. They looked great, they sounded great, they were singing about stuff that mattered - misogyny, racism, conformism, relationships - and were, to my mind at least, leaders in creating a wave of bands whose impact is being felt more than ever. Pioneers isn't too strong a word in my opinion.Anyway, after the Au Pairs disbanded, Lesley went on a long hiatus doing something completely different - she became an immigration lawyer, but she has picked up her guitar again and there is a lot of stuff going on which I think is hugely exciting.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. In 1985 The Mekons released their 4th studio album. Robert Christgau: "Just when I never wanted to hear a roots-rock record again, along come these British anarchists with a sort of concept album sort of about life during wartime. The Americans are clearing a sector down south, but that doesn't stop the good guys from playing their anarchic country-rock and doing their anarchic Morris stomp and fucking up their anarchic love lives and drinking to keep from shitting their pants and rolling down a highway that may finally be lost for real. Yes, amateurism is still a sentimental fallacy, and if you want to know why it's such a powerful one, listen up." Lets talk The Mekons, Fear and Whiskey!

Today's guest is punk rock pioneer, Jon Langford, a founding member of The Mekons, who were considered one the first wave punk bands from Britain.  We learn about Jon's melding folk and country music with punk music in The Mekons and several other side projects including The Waco Brothers, which he founded in Chicago after moving to the city in 1992.  We learn of how his music career was a surprise detour that materialized after The Mekons turned some record label heads while Jon and his at-school mates were simply having a blast thrashing about in the 1970's punk scene.  Between record labels and touring with The Mekons, Jon dusted off his paint brushes and found that he was able to make a bit of a splash as a visual artist.  Jon continues to perform and record music sporadically with The Mekons and he plays solo acoustic shows, while continuing to paint, with works in several high profile galleries. Steve and Catherine have a great conversation with Jon and we learn a great deal about his creative process, both as a musician and as a visual artist. Drummer Steve Goulding has brought his crisp, distinct style to more great songs than you may realize. As a member of Graham Parker and the Rumour, he played on Howlin' Wind through the classic Squeezing Out Sparks. He demonstrated his reggae chops on Elvis Costello's “Watching the Detectives” and powered Nick Lowe's Jesus of Cool/Pure Pop for Now People while earning a songwriting credit on “I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass.” He had one high-profile performance with David Bowie, and since the mid-‘80s, with a break and a Poi Dog Pondering stint thrown in there, he has been driving the many beats of the Mekons. Goulding takes us through the up and downs, breakups and reunions, colorful personalities and overbearing producers, with great humor, candor and, of course, a steady hand.

Zig At The Gig interview with Brad Elvis & Chloe F. Orwell of The Handcuffs   Led by drummer Brad Elvis (Screams, The Elvis Brothers, Big Hello, The Romantics) and vocalist/guitarist/saxophonist Chloe F. Orwell (Big Hello), Chicago's The Handcuffs will be releasing their fourth studio album Burn The Rails. The 13-song album was tracked at Kingsize Sound Labs, Chicago with producer/engineer Mike Hagler (Wilco, Neko Case, Billy Bragg, Mavis Staples, My Morning Jacket, The Mekons). Burn The Rails is being released by Pravda Records in June on CD, download and via streaming platforms and later on 12″ vinyl. For the the new album, The Handcuffs found inspiration from the heady, analog days of early 1970s rock & roll, weaving together elements of glam, indie, garage, art and blues rock. Inhabiting some of the same musical turf as T-Rex, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music, The Raconteurs, P.J. Harvey, Led Zeppelin, and Patti Smith – all filtered through a modern lens – they deliver bold, sexy songs with memorable melodies and unexpected twists. Guest keyboardist Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople) demonstrates his synthesizer and piano prowess on a couple of tracks on the new LP. The relationship with Fisher, a musical hero of the band, began after singer Orwell's rave review of Mott The Hoople's 2018 reunion tour went viral on social media, attracting the attention of Fisher, who got in contact. From there a creative collaboration was sparked, in-spite of an ocean separating the now real-life friends. Finishing the record during the peak of the pandemic and lockdown, gave several of the songs an inadvertent anthem-for-the-times feel – with themes of love and loss, heartache and hope, and even the great ideological divide that was as omnipresent as the virus. Elvis and Orwell formed The Handcuffs from the ashes of Big Hello, their first band together, which released three indie label records and toured from coast to coast. Elvis' career also includes a few major label go-arounds, arena tours, and a backstory that will be documented in a new autobiography in the near future. The duo's eagerness to explore new sonic territory and evolve into an entity that aligned more with their ever-expanding influences and broad range of musical tastes prompted a change. The Handcuffs began as primarily a studio project, in which Elvis and Orwell wrote and recorded an abundance of material. During the process, they realized they missed the live band experience, so The Handcuffs as recording artists and a dynamic live band was born. Completing the line-up are bassist Emily Togni, lead guitarist Jeffrey Kmieciak, and keyboardist Alison Hinderliter, all of whom originate from different parts of the country, but have made Chicago their home.
