Competitive Pioneer made its return to Paper Magic in the USA at the Star City Games Open and 5k and The First Pioneers wanted to have a good look at all the decks that were being played at the event. While it was part of a team event, Pioneer fans should still get a lot of great data and information about the format from the results. We also took a look at the 5K event the following day as well. Aside from the results, last weekend we also got a chance to see what the format was like without its good friend Lurrus. How did those decks that had Lurrus previously change their style, their gameplay, and their sideboard? We took a look at some of the newest post Lurrus decklists as well as described how the metagame has changed without it. If your Lurrus deck took a hit, be sure to check out how to go about fixing it! Our Discord: https://discord.gg/SBRF8DH Our Twitter: https://twitter.com/MtgPioneer
Grab your pickaxes and shovels and join Dana and Franky as they put standard out to pasture and venture forth into the uncharted territories of Pioneer. On this episode they briefly discuss the state of standard and its effect on magic as a whole before setting off on the trail and diving into Pioneer for the first time. Magic also changes the way you think as far as values and risk. Biggest Mistake Players Make Caring so much that it pains you to lose. Young players tend to lose sight of the big picture and get torn up when they lose. To overcome this, your mindset / approach to Magic needs to evolve to where you enjoy the game and understand that it is a game and how lucky you are to fuel your competitive drive through a complex hobby. “When I get a challenge, I really just want to be the best at what I do.” Michael Bonde is a fixture in the Danish Magic scene, and one of the game’s most outgoing personalities. He created Magic history by becoming the first European player to win a Star City Games Open. He has also enjoyed two Top 4 finishes in Grand Prix events, along with a 17th place finish at Pro Tour Madrid. Through skillful play and collaboration with the game’s top talent, Michael has become a powerful force to be reckoned with. In this no-holds-barred conversation, I speak to Michael about his lifelong passions for learning, teaching, and competition. He shares his earliest childhood memories, and explains how joining the military contributed to his personal and Magic development. Michael also talks openly about staying true to his goals, and the dedicated life of the grind. The overarching theme is that of self-improvement — Michael is constantly looking to raise the bar, both for himself and others. Tune in for an inside look at one of the game’s fiercest competitors. Ross Merriam is a writer for Starcitygames.com and is a Silver Level Pro with 2 Grand Prix Top 8s, 2 Star City Games Invitational Top 8s and 3 Star City Games Open Wins. Ross lives in Connecticut. Click to Tweet: I got a ton of value from Ross Merriam when he shared his story on MTG Pro Tutor today! Click here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep36 First Set Odessey Favorite Set Time Spiral Favorite Card Vendilion Clique What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? The competitive scene and the people. Being a rather competitive person Ross enjoys the challenge of tournaments and consistently placing in big events. He also appreciates that he's met so many cool people through Magic: The Gathering. Early Challenge Not understanding what cards were good in a competitive setting versus when playing with your friends at home was tough for Ross at first. People at his local game store took him under their wing and taught him the ropes. Level Up Moment The growth and changes he experienced at college greatly contributed to Ross' Magic abilities. Specifically he developed his analytical skills, communication skills and humility. Proudest Magic Moment Going 13-2 with an Elves deck at a Legacy Grand Prix in New Jersey. He navigated a field of decks that should have beaten Elves and got back on the Pro Tour. Favorite Format Pauper Cube How to Choose a Sideboard How your opponent plays is one of the least relevant factors when determining how to sideboard. Ross considers the match up and what their list looks like. Ross has an idea of 2-3 cards he will side board against each match up. Biggest Mistake Players Make Holding lands as a bluff. If you're holding a card in your hand for several turns your opponent will know it's nothing special. Balance the bluff with the benefit of having the card on the field. Card Evaluation Tips For a fall set that initiates a rotation, keep in mind the powerful shells from the previous format and rebuild your understanding from scratch. When evaluating a set that come out in the middle of a format, look for cards that push existing archetypes. Sealed & Draft Tips Sealed: Do cards have more tactical or strategic synergy? Look for cards that lead to an overall goal.Avoid even numbers in your mana base because it causes the most variance in your draws. Tournament Preparation Have friends with similar goals. If your friends want to get cards signed their focus is vastly different than if they want to make a run for day two of the GP. How to Effectively Play Test Always take time to decompress and talk about your play session at the end of the day. Dan Jordan has 3 Pro Tour top 16s, 4 Grand Prix top 8s, and 4 Star City Games Open wins under his belt. He has also top 75'd another Pro Tour and has cashed in numerous other Grand Prix. Evaluation Tips Dan admits to being a terrible card evaluator but still thinks about cards as they are released and their possible impact on Standard. Limited Tips Sealed: Identify a deck plan and build around that. Draft: Be very mindful of your mana curve. Team Building Find A team. Ideally you'll want a team with Pro players but if you can't find one then just get on A team that play tests regularly. Play Testing Take good notes and don't waste play testing time.
