How Fungi is Enhancing Soil Carbon Sequestration Underground, with Tegan Nock

ClimateBreak

How Climate Change Puts the Agriculture Industry at RiskSince the Industrial Revolution, our soils have lost between twenty and sixty percent of their carbon levels as a result of agricultural practice exacerbated by more common and more extreme droughts and floods resulting from climate change. Farmers have witnessed their crops endure mass devastation as a result of these unprecedented environmental disasters. Hence, the loss of carbon in soil threatens the stability of both the agriculture industry and global food security. Why Does Soil Need Carbon?Stable carbon storage in soil is crucial for healthy soil and supports resistance to climate vulnerability. But how? A 1% increase of carbon in soil equates to a two percent increase in its water-holding capacity, in turn creating more drought-resistant soil that can better weather extreme climate variability. By enhancing its water-holding capacity, as well as nutrient retention rates, stable carbon contributes to both the structure and function of soil. Consequently, soil health and productivity are contingent on soil's carbon content. By recognizing that stable carbon storage within their soil can lead to more nutrient-dense crops and bigger yields, farmers have a clear economic incentive to seek agricultural solutions that can reduce the current rate of carbon loss their crops are experiencing. The Future of Fungi: Building Resilient Soil EcosystemsBased in Orange, New South Wales, Australian biotech start-up Loam Bio has developed a new way to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it underground. The solution, a microbial fungi-based seed treatment, is far less complex than one might initially think, simply requiring farmers to sprinkle the ground-up dust of fungal spores onto seeds actively used in their planting systems. As crops grow from those seeds, the fungal spores attach themselves to the roots. The tendrils of the fungus then extract the carbon that has been absorbed by the crop it latched onto.Plants, on their own, sequester carbon from the atmosphere—a process crucial to mitigating fossil fuel emissions. The microbial fungal treatment leverages that sequestration by reducing the plants' natural emissions of carbon. This particular type of microbial fungi, therefore, provides a level of protection against standard plant respiration, thereby reducing the amount of carbon returned to the atmosphere and instead storing it in soil for a longer period than the natural carbon cycle. Loam Bio relies on a cross-disciplinary team ranging from geneticists to mycologists to plant physiologists to carbon methodology experts. For example, the fungi and other organisms involved in the treatment are pre-screened through a genetic selection process that evaluates whether they are safe to introduce to the agricultural landscape and can effectively interact with the herbicides and fertilizers that may be used in crop production. The success of the fungi, however, is ultimately dependent on the soil type and the climatic environment of the respective farm to which it is being applied via seed treatment. Soil Expert SkepticismWhile there is hope within the science community for the potential of the uptake of carbon in soil as a climate solution, some experts remain skeptical of whether the use of microbial fungi in field tests will translate to a meaningful impact on the carbon release of crops on operational farms.  Further testing and monitoring will be required for a full evaluation of the benefits and impacts.  The agriculture industry relies on intensive farming practices that are increasingly worsening soil erosion and overall decreasing the quality of farming soil, including depleting the soil's carbon content. Loam's Bio initiative provides one possible pathway to try and reverse this consequence of industrial farming. So far, Loam Bio has had some encouraging results, achieving soil carbon content levels of 6%—far surpassing the US average of 1-4%. This revolutionary treatment has the potential to transform soil into an invaluable carbon sink, even more than it is now.Who Is Our Guest?Tegan Nock is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Loam Bio. A sixth-generation farmer from central west New South Wales, Australia,  Nock combines her agricultural roots with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Agriculture Operations, and Related Sciences from Charles Stuart University. In addition to her work at Loam Bio, Nock produced Grassroots: A Film About a Fungus, showcasing her passion for soil health and climate resilience. Featured in Netflix's Down to Earth with Zac Efron (Season 2, Episode 8: Eco-Innovators), Tegan shared insights on the seed treatment and the power of fungi to bolster stable carbon content in soil. Further Reading:Loam Bio: Carbon and Soil Health - Loam USSuccessful Farming: Loam Bio brings new carbon opportunities to the U.S.The New York Times: Can Dirt Clean the Climate?Interago: Why biostimulant seed treatments are better for regenerative farming » Interagro (UK) LtdCivil Eats: Fungi Are Helping Farmers Unlock the Secrets of Soil Carbon | Civil Eats For a transcript, please visit https://climatebreak.org/how-fungi-is-enhancing-soil-carbon-sequestration-underground-with-tegan-nock/

Pinot Noir Purchase Targhee: I've been spinning the giant (2.2 pound) ball of Targhee roving I bought from an attendee at last fall's Fort Worden Knitting Retreat. Last episode I talked about how the fiber made me sneeze. I removed the outer layer of roving and started spinning again with no sneezing. Kelly suggested I dye some of the roving so I've dyed 4 oz each burgundy and green. The roving is very thin and delicate. I wound the roving on the knitty noddy and tied it in six places. I tied the roving more tightly than I would for yarn, but I wanted to be sure the weight of the water didn't felt or pull the roving apart. I plan to dye more colors.   Kelly's Projects Finished: 13.8 ounces of Jazzman (CVM x Merino x Columbia) 3-py.  Use all the Spinning Tools Challenge: Wyatt Norwegian wheel is now spinning a Greenwood Fiber BFL braid. Picked up in the NoCKRs 2024 destash room. Cast on and worked on this almost exclusively on my Alaska trip. I have completed the yoke and about 5” of the body. Pinot Noir Purchase Targhee: Started spinning the giant (2.2 pound) ball of Targhee roving I bought from an attendee at last fall's Fort Worden Knitting Retreat. You know I cannot resist those large balls! The woman I bought it from said she got it from a weaver's estate. It seems pretty dusty and I was sneezing like crazy last night. I'll have to wear a mask while spinning. Kelly's Projects Finished: Pride dish towels in German Birdseye weave structure. I used three variegated skeins of fluffy cotton singles plied with a thin thread of something else (polyester or nylon?). For the stripes around these three I used cotton or cottolin yarn in red, orange, green, and blue. I used all those solids as warp and also used a royal blue cotton, a brick red cottolin and some bobbin leftovers from the last project.  I ended up with 5 dishtowels and a square. I love these towels and can't wait to do another stash busting warp like this.  Two skeins of Jazzman (CVM x Merino x Columbia) are finished. I'm in the process of topping off the bobbins before doing more plying. It's turned out to be a lighter yarn than I expected–fingering weight. It didn't plump up as much as I thought it would after washing.  Use all the Spinning Tools Challenge: I've finished and wound off a second ball of the green singles from the tahkli. I've been taking it with me in the car and to dog class where we have a break between classes.  I also spun up small samples (about 6-8 grams) on the other two spindles.  Still to go: Charkha, Salish Spinner, Great Wheel, and Norwegian Found buttons for Marsha's baby sweater. Welcome to Episode 1024 Steve Raye interviews Wolfgang Klotz of Cantina Tramin in this installment of Get US Market Ready With Italian Wine People on the Italian Wine Podcast. About today's winery: In a time without prospects for many South Tyrolean winegrowers, Christian Schrott, pastor of Tramin and later member of parliament in Vienna, founded their cooperative in 1898 to secure the future of many small local winegrowers. Thanks to the strength of this connection, the Tramin winery has developed over time into one of the most established cooperatives in the region and a model recognized worldwide. Today they are 160 winegrowing families and work a total of around 270 hectares. Every single bottle stands for their life's work philosophy: a sense of duty, commitment, confidence and creativity. In 1971, the Tramin winery merged with the Neumarkt cooperative, founded in 1893. This connection brings together in a single cooperative a rich heritage of traditions and vineyards, including the prestigious Pinot Noir vineyards of Mazzon and Glen. Under the leadership of our new cellar master, Willi Stürz, the trend towards rigorous quality thinking is completed in the 90s: the selection line (consisting today of Nussbaumer, Terminum, Unterebner, Stoan, Freisinger, Maglen, Urban and Loam) sees the light of day . These wines are the result of a selection from our best vineyards and symbolize what we do to the highest degree. In 2010 the conversion of the winery was completed. The sculptural building, a project by the South Tyrolean architect Werner Tscholl, will become Tramin's landmark.   We've got Sarah of Lily and Loam with us today to talk about what you can do with your beautiful bouquets once your wedding is over. Lily and Loam offers flower preservation so you can keep your flowers as a tangible reminder of your big day. Sarah specializes in functional, wearable, and decorative art, creating pieces that fit perfectly into your life. This includes framed pieces, resin pieces, and even jewelry. She started this business in 2017 working part-time, primarily on her friends' bouquets. Then, she quickly realized just how much she could do with resin. In 2021, the boss at her full-time job gave her an ultimatum to come in during lockdown or be let go. In hindsight, this was a blessing because it provided an opportunity to follow her passion. Sarah was doing homeschool by day and creating keepsakes at night. For her, it's been so worth it for the connections she's made and the ability to create pieces she loves. The service Sarah offers is one so many newlyweds wish they would have known about in hindsight. Sarah If you're not close enough to drop the flowers off, you can ship them right over. From there, it takes about 6-8 weeks to finish the process, and then she sends them back for her customers to enjoy. Prices start at $300, but they may be higher depending on what the couple is looking for. Resin is amazing at preserving, so if you want to maintain the colors of your flowers, choose a resin product over a frame. Your photos are no longer the only thing that could last past your wedding day—with Lily and Loam, you can now enjoy your flowers for years to come too.

As we explore (and expand) our understanding of matriarchy at Loam this year, this conversation with activist, healer, and creator extraordinaire Twiggy Pucci Garçon offers insight into how the Ballroom community redefines and reimagines nurturing relationship through creating unique spaces of care, support, and expression. From reflecting on queerness to excavating the link between spirituality and self, Loam Listen host Amirio Freeman and Twiggy dive deep in this world-building conversation. GUEST: Raised in a southern, religious, Black community, Twiggy is a proud non-binary member of the LGBTQ+ community. As an activist, producer, healer and creator, Twiggy attributes the balance of struggle and strength they witnessed and experienced, early in life, to their ability to maneuver through spaces of power and represent for people without. Praising literary greats like James Baldwin to the women in their family, Twiggy is quick to credit their ancestral warriors and pathmakers for the elevation of their own voice in a way that ultimately leads to progress. Since finding support in the Ballroom community at a very crucial moment in their life, Twiggy leverages every opportunity to generate conversations around equity for LGBTQ+ young people and create quality spaces for them to be centered in making decisions and solutions around the issue of homelessness. With over 15 years of experience, both personally and professionally, Twiggy has collaborated with artists, filmmakers, academics and policymakers to increase visibility of both creative and sociopolitical agendas.
